Sookie could see how easily he got startled by her bluntness, which has resulted on her very playful smile painting her lips. she did like his reaction . . . liked to provoke until she was sure his urge to have her was hardly managable to be hidden away. like she was sure that was happening right now. glancing up at Max, she released one small giggle realising how bad he did want her, she could say it by how his eyes hungrily watched her cleavage, just like she could read what was on his mind. because it was just the same that was going on hers anyway. she sat upright, bringing her drink to her lips before smiling up at him. "Tatics? I don't know what you mean by that," she shook her head, clearly just saying it to mess with him. she knew exactly what he meant anyway, given it was what she was doing right now. "Tell me, has it been working? Because, the way I see you're looking at me, I would say yes," she wanted him to want her. it wasn't secret that she was dying to have him as well.

i know you’ve talked about lorelai and emily from gg before, but what were your thoughts on lorelai and richard?

i mean obviously there’s more of a mother-daughter focus on the show since that’s what it revolves around, but it always did kinda bother me that richard was - in a way - the one to open up the “you got pregnant at 16 and chose to throw away the opportunities i gave you” discussion in s1 (i believe it was in the episode where rory meets her other grandparents). and then the show kinda never addressed it again in that specific way, even though i genuinely think expanding on that scene alone more would’ve made lorelai’s relationship with emily and richard more interesting than irritating. bc i get that they were controlling, but the idea that we never see them be disappointed beyond that, and that that hypothetical disappointment never seems like a contributing factor to lorelai leaving, always felt kinda unrealistic to me. like you meant to tell me you became a teen mom and your parents with incredibly high expectations weren’t let down in some way? they simply jumped to trying to marry you off and when that didn’t work they - quite literally - left you alone to live in their mansion???

I'm not sure what you mean by this? Are you talking about the flashback? Because they didn't leave her alone to live in the house

It's just that they were going out the night that Lorelai had left as if it were business as usual

and the thing about the flashbacks is that if Richard and Lorelai are having this conversation in the present

and we're meant to see all the reasons why Lorelai would've left at sixteen with no plan to then live in a shed at the back of a hotel then in the flashback episodes I'm going to need to see what Lorelai is talking about way more directly in scenes that matter.

With Emily, yes, she yells at Lorelai while she's in labour for leaving a note and I'm not saying Emily was right for that because the whole thing is that if she were supportive, instead of yelling at Lorelai for not telling her, she would've asked if she's OK, if she's in pain, if she needs anything, she would just be there for Lorelai, I get that. But I also can't help but wonder what would Emily's reaction be if Lorelai actually just told her. It's kind of like when Emily reacted to Lorelai's news about marrying Max exactly the way she thought she would and it's only because Lorelai didn't tell her that she was getting married and she had to find out from Sookie and the whole point is that there's so much shit between them that by Lorelai attempting to protect herself it causes more friction except the shit between them needs more fleshing out. So, I would've rather a scene in the flashback where Lorelai and Emily are in the middle of an argument about something to do with the baby and Lorelai doesn't take Emily's advice so she picks at Lorelai and gets really sarcastic and is like "Oh, what would I know about babies, I only raised a child -- at an appropriate age I might add -- I only have x amount of years of experience, but I suppose that doesn't matter in the face of my teenage daughter's say so etc. etc." and then Emily leaves while continuing to rant, Lorelai feels her contractions and she slips out of the house to go to the hospital while Emily is still ranting in the background and THEN we can get the scene with the yelling and the note.

Which then leads to Richard and this specific qualm he brought up. In the flashback episode, instead of the scene with the note starting with them arguing about his scarf, change it to something like they're going to a dinner with his firm and Emily doesn't want to go and the two of them bicker back and forth about saving face, about salvaging their reputation, there's a passive aggressive remarks about Lorelai being unwed, they have to stand tall no matter how they feel about Lorelai's shortcomings etc. so we can see what their priorities are and see how Lorelai would be made to feel in that house.

and then the show kinda never addressed it again in that specific way,

the show attempts to do address the issues in that conversation with a couple of story lines but they're mostly entwined with Rory so namely when Richard meets Dean

and when Richard and Lorelai have that out about Yale

it's supposed to be this undercurrent that permeates every conversation they have with each other but again the problem is that we don't see how Lorelai is a sore spot for Richard to talk about outside of his argument with Strobe.

But the main issue with Richard is meant to be this

(which is also supposed to be the issue with Emily)

and we're supposed to see that with the way he came up with the plan to have Lorelai and Christopher get married without asking either of them how they felt. Although in that scene what we see is Richard coming up with a plan and not asking anyone how they felt including Strobe, Francine and Emily.

Also, after he defends her from Strobe, when Lorelai says that she feels sorry for him, he's like well save your emotions and Lorelai's just like OK so we're just going to end our conversation here, nothing resolved? and Richard essentially says yes

but the issue here for me is that I don't really see Richard do this. Richard is just a person who is uncomfortable with emotions in general, when Lorelai graduates and he gives her some money as a present she says genuinely, "Thank you, Daddy" and you see him flustered and he just nods and leaves. We don't see how he responds or doesn't respond to Lorelai when she refuses to get married.

When they have their Yale blow up, she's the one who misses two dinners and doesn't return Emily's calls, when Rory reveals that she applied to Yale as well, Lorelai has a tantrum at the table in front of guests, and storms out, when he and Lorelai get into that argument after they spend the day together he's like, you've never invited me to your house, so really what I'm seeing is that when Emily and Richard do something she can't control, she's the one who freezes them out and it's supposed to be a defence mechanism and a way to cut off people who are toxic for you but the toxicity of Richard and Emily are things I needed to see in action more frequently and more directly for it all to make sense in more than just theory because even the episode he spends the day in Stars Hollow, was he annoying? Sure. But he was annoying in the way parents are when they still parent you as an adult so the whole thing seems really overblown to me.

Random thought: Gilmore Girls 💭

I’m at episode 5 season 1. So far, Rory is best girl and Lorelai is such a child. I don’t like the guy that calls best girl “Mary” too. Chicago guy is so yandere coded, I was kinda put off by it but now after the bus scene I kinda like him? Plus he is cute. Actually he creeps me out. He is kinda too pushy.( >~<)"

★ favorite color: teal? turquoise? i have impeccable color vision and a horrendous time naming them. basically that gorgeous blue-green color of the ocean in the caribbean. most of the accents in my apartment are teal, and one of my friends recently asked if i had painted my laptop, because there's plastic trim that's "my" color, nope. it came that way, cause i'm lucky like that

★ currently reading: will my cat eat my eyeballs (and other questions about dead bodies) by caitlin doughty. i've read this one before but i'm reading it again for a long distance book club with my best friends. it's a series of questions from children about death, and caitlin's (a california-based mortician, death positive activist, and youtuber) answers to them. it's compassionate and funny, and informative, and i can't recommend it (and all her books enough). also chasing aphrodite: the hunt for looted antiques at the world's richest museum by jason felch & ralph frammolino. it's a great read about the looted objects in the getty museum, the unethical practices that put them there, and the unethical actors who tried to keep them there. i love museums and as someone who wants to work in collections and on repatriation, this is practically required reading. the stepford wives by ira levin. i LOVE horror and this is an iconic piece, so i'm excited to read it for the first time. aaaaaand finally to be like geese, by writ_and_romance on ao3. i'm only on chapter 4, and i haven't read a long fic in ages, but i found it while i was cleaning tabs on my phone, and bee recommended it to me, so i felt like i had to jump in. okay that's like so many things what on earth.

★ last song: why do i by set it off. i found out about set it off from one of my very best friends from high school one of the last times i saw him when we were both home from college. they're loud, they're fun, he runs marathons to them, i like to hula hoop dance to them, and they always make me think of him.

★ last series: i recently restarted the sookie stackhouse series by charlaine harris, because i was watching an ask a mortician video (caitlin doughty is simply everywhere in my life) about the new england vampire panic where she mentioned true blood, and i don't have hbo max so i decided to read the books again, and man are those books WEIRD. i've read the first two and decided i needed to take a break cause just, way too much happens to sookie. i was definitely too young to be reading them when i did the first time in like, early high school (also unaware i was ace, and the sex in those books is so poorly written that it's easy to miss) and it's an experience to read them as an adult.

★ sweet, savory or spicy: savory for sure. i buy sweet things like candy and then they sit in my pantry for months on end and don't get eaten for some reason, but i can eat an entire bag of shrimp chips in one sitting.

★ currently working on: uh, fangfest! which is so fun, but i'm also in a total writing slump so it feels a bit like pulling teeth even though i LOVE the story and that just feels, bad. so i'm supplementing that with work on some other non-writing projects, some crocheting, some cross stitching, and a travel cup that says "i want to believe" for my undying love for the x files and more specifically fox mulder. there's other writing stuff in the pipeline too, but i'm purposely not letting myself think about that.

A/N: The entire idea for this came from @burnsoslow​ and her unBEARable series. RAMifications is the story of how Ella met the love of her life Prince (and then King) Liam of Cordonia.

“Well, well, well, look what we have here.”

“Hello, I’m Ella, and you are?”

“Je m'appelle Kiara,” the dark haired woman spoke in French. “C'est Olivia,” Kiara gestured to the red headed woman.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you both,” Ella said calmly, even though inside her stomach was in knots.

“Oui, it’s nice to … finally see you in person,” Kiara arched her brow and Ella could tell she was studying her.

“Cut the shit, Kiara!” Olivia snarled. “I wouldn’t say it’s a pleasure! How dare you come in the middle of the social season! Where’s the other American?”

“Lady Ella! We’re ready for you.” Bertrand called inside the ballroom.

“Excuse me, ladies,” Ella quickly turned from and hurried to take her place across from Ana. Bertrand went to close the ballroom doors since he could see the women peering inside out of curiosity.

“Alright, Lady Ella,” Ana began. “I have a video camera set up to film us. I also have a photographer here who will take photos of the interview as well as afterwards. I won’t be releasing anything without House Beaumont’s approval,” she looked up at Bertrand who just nodded. “Are you ready?”

Ella sucked in a breath and let it out slowly. “Yes.”

“Okay,” Ana looked to her cameraman and nodded.

“In 3, 2 … “ he pointed to Ana to indicate they were recording.

“Alright, Lady Ella of House Beaumont, thank you for this opportunity. The people of Cordonia are eager to hear more about you.”

“I’m happy to be here, Ana.”

“So firstly, tell us a little bit about you, where are you from in the States? What brought you here?”

“Well, I’m from Los Angeles, California. I originally came here for a nursing internship at the children’s hospital.”

“You actually worked at the hospital?”

Ella laughed. “Yes, I was in the emergency room, as an intern. We did not get paid for that. The program was for six weeks and I had already fallen in love with Cordonia and its people. After my internship I decided to stay permanently.”

Ana had a small smile on her face as she scribbled in her notes. “Wow. Okay, so you decided to stay, what happened after that?”

“Well, I found a job so that I could stay as a resident; I delivered flowers.”

“Ah, yes, I know the one. It’s the flower truck in the capital, right?”

Ella nodded. “Yes, that’s the one. They were extremely sweet and were lenient with my schedule since I was in school as well.”

“Oh! You’re still in school then?”

“I had to actually push back school until January after the social season, but yes I attend Cordonia University.”

“I see.” Ana scribbled some more words on her notepad and looked up smiling. “So, how did you end up meeting the prince?”

“Well, I was delivering flowers here at the palace and we ran into each other - literally.” Ella laughed at the memory.

“That’s like a real meet cute!” Ana exclaimed, her and Maxwell laughed. Bertrand arched his brow at Max and Ella and they both abruptly stopped laughing.

“He’s been extremely supportive throughout all of this, just like House Beaumont.” Ella gestured to Max and Bertrand next to her.

Ana nodded and wrote more in her notebook. “What is something you love about our charming Prince Liam? He is the people’s favorite royal.”

“I am not surprised at all by that, Ana,” Ella smiled. “He is ... the kindest person I have ever met. He would take the shirt off of his back to give to anyone if they needed it. His people are important to him as is his country and he wants to do right by them.”

“Well said, Lady Ella. I just have one last question, a question that all of Cordonia has been wanting to know.” She gave Ella a small smile. “The social season is, essentially, for Prince Liam to find a queen.” Ella nodded. “Why do you think you’ll be an appropriate choice? What makes you different from the other suitors that will make him choose you?”

Ella sucked in a breath and let it out slowly. She told King Constantine the exact reason why she was an appropriate choice. She just needed to say the same to Ana, just not as … angry. “I believe Prince Liam needs someone to rule by his side that understands the people. I am clearly not from Cordonia, or have any kind of noble blood in me, however, I have lived among the people. I’ve worked hard to put a roof over my head; I’ve had to manage finances and handle a budget. I know it’s not a secret here in Cordonia that the royal family must marry for a political alliance of some sort with other countries, but …” Ella hesitated for a moment to think about whether she should say what she truly thought. “I … truly care for the prince and I believe he deserves to have a queen as well as a wife. One that supports him as a man and a king.”

Bertrand beamed at Ella’s response; Maxwell grinned like a fool while he bounced in his seat. Ana had a wide smile on her face and nodded, impressed. She leaned back and gestured for her cameraman to stop recording. Ella, Maxwell and Bertrand posed for a few more photos until Ana signaled for the photographer to wrap it up.

“Well said, Lady Ella. It was an honor to meet you, thank you so much for your time.” Ana leaned forward to shake Ella’s hand.

“That was amazing, Ellaaaaa!” Maxwell lept from his chair and pulled Ella from her seat as she laughed loudly. He threw his arms around her and she almost fell backwards from the force.

“Thanks for being here with me, Max.” Ella murmured in his ear. They parted and smiled down at her.

“Lady Ella, that was a great! I’ll get everything written out and contact Duke Ramsford to approve it.”

Ella looked at Bertrand who cleared his throat before speaking. “Thank you, Ana, that would be wonderful.”

Ana had the crew pack up and Bertrand showed them out. Max and Ella decided to change and get ready for dinner. As soon as they exited the ballroom, they saw Liam and Constantine walking down the stairs. He caught her eye and quickly winked, flashing a small smile in her direction. Ella blushed and smiled back as she headed to her room.

After deciding to have a movie night instead of dinner in the stuffy dining room, Maxwell and Ella raided the kitchen and snuck back to her room with their spoils.

“I got the Doritos!” Max shoved a whole chip in his mouth enthusiastically.

“You and those chips,” Ella laughed. “What movie do you wanna watch?” She tossed some kettle corn into her mouth and washed it down with some Cordonian apple juice.

“You pick! Here.” He handed her the remote and Ella clicked through the selection on the smart tv and found one of her favorites.

“Ooh! A rom-com! How To Lose A Guy In Ten Days!”

Maxwell scrunched his nose up. “I haven’t seen that one. Why is she purposely trying to lose him? What kind of rom-com is that?”

Ella let out a loud laugh. “Just watch. You’ll love it.”

True to her word, he did love it. He loved it so much he now had a mini crush on Kate Hudson and vowed that they would watch every movie she starred in. Just as the night was winding down, Ella got an alert on her phone. Seeing who it was, she grinned.

Liam: Hey gorgeous.

Ella: Hey you! Thought you’d be busy tonight.

Liam: Just finished up some meetings with my father. Can I see you? I just wanted to come say goodnight.

Ella: If you have a moment. I’ll be in my room.

Liam: On my way

“What? Why are you so happy?”

“Liam is going to stop by.” She felt her neck start to get warm and her cheeks flush.

“Aww sookie sookie now!” Maxwell waggled his eyebrows and laughed. “Well, I think I’ll take all of my junk food and meander over to my room.” He stood to gather the chips, chocolate, juice and popcorn.

“Max! You don’t have to leave. He just wants to say goodnight.” She snatched the bag of kettle corn from him and started pour some in her mouth.

Maxwell snickered. “You and I both know … that’s not what’s gonna go down tonight.” He gave her the side eye and smirked at her facial expression.

She choked on some popcorn. “I don’t … what do you mean?” Ella stuttered.

Before Max could retort, there was a soft knock on the door.

“I wonder who that could be?” He gave her a knowing look as Ella just rolled her eyes. Maxwell flew over to open the door and there stood Liam with a smile on his face.

“Hello - oh! Hi Max.” Liam rubbed the back of his neck, his cheeks turned a slight pink as he sheepishly smiled at him.

“Liam! What. A. Surprise.” Maxwell tried to plaster on a shocked look on his face but instead, he gave his longtime friend a big grin. “I was just leaving. Byeeee Ellaaaaa!” He called over his shoulder as he bounced out of the room with all the snacks and pushed Liam inside.

i know this could be too similar to lemon-sookie, but i was thinking a lorelai x max + 1000 yellow daisies would be cool and spring-y! but also Lane + daisies sounds fitting to me and i would love to see a lane themed mb... so maybe only Lane + bouquets, is it too generic? however, just rambling things that i hope may prompt inspiration

They’ve begun travelling now. He likes to stay diplomatically relevant. Likes to be known to the kings and queens of lands beyond Ravka. Because the otkazat’sya Lantsov king is weak and stupid. She knows. She’s met him many times. And she met his father before him. She’s dined with their ambassadors and danced with their advisors (Shadow likes to show her off as his little relic. His little stolen child, kept as a pet the same way fairies of old would keep children from her world. It is also a very clear piece on the chess board. Look what I have. Look what she can do. Know your place).

“Lantsov is lucky anyone even continues to acknowledge him as king. If I were a queen, the only diplomat I would sit down with is you.” She’s known her Shadow a hundred years now. She cannot fathom why anyone still bows to the Lantsov king.

“Do I not treat you with all the adoration and reverence due a queen?” He asks in response, ignoring her statement for the moment. Though it strokes something warm and needy inside him to hear her say it.

They’re in Kerch. A disgustingly wealthy merchant’s villa is their home for the night. At his table they dined on sweet-buttered grouse and roasted kale and salted caramel cake.

The back of his ungloved finger traces her neck as she takes her jewelry off and lets her hair down. The touch flares her power with a shivering thrill of electricity. Unable to help herself, Jo flexes her abilities enough to let him know not to push her. The air in the room compresses for a moment until all sound is narrowed down, resting on the pin of a needle and ringing in his ears. Thirty seconds go by. Finally, she lets up and he has to grip the window sill as his lungs drag desperately for oxygen.

“What?” He half snarls, half chokes. Jo is shown more favor than anyone else at his court by far. He’s never lavished another with the same attention and devotion he pours over her. He’s never trusted anyone enough to allow them so close. But he’s careful to keep her loyalties where they belong. Uses her power to keep the other Grisha in check. To keep their eyes fixed with jealousy so they’ll never look upon her with love. So she has no other confessional but him. So she can never hold anything she knows to his throat. Even if she thought to overthrow him and seize power for herself, they would never follow her. They’d wear her bones first.

“You know what. Do not dare to play the victim with me.” They argue as if they’re married. And maybe in a way they are. Promises forever unbroken. Loyalty carried to the grave. Secrets pressed between them for centuries, that no one else could ever unfold.

Swallowing, he swipes away the blood dripping from his nose with the handkerchief in his pocket. Glances out the window, partly guilty and partly annoyed that the girl can even make him feel guilt.

“You know why I can’t let you stay.” They’ve been over this a hundred thousand times. He won’t have her for one lifetime when he needs her power for much longer than that. And perhaps, a part of him needs her to be hungry for him. To know she’s in Duluth salivating at the mouth to get back here. Perhaps he’s scared that if he gives her all she wants of him, of Ravka, she’ll have her fill and go back for good.

14. "I don’t have the words right now so here’s a kiss" -- Luke/Lorelai.

“Thanks for coming over,” Lorelai said as she escorted him out. “I’ll get Rory to help me understand my notes next week when I can’t read my handwriting.”

“Here’s an idea: type it up. Helps you remember, and takes care of the handwriting thing.”

“Good tip. Seriously, I really appreciate you talking me through everything, Luke.” She dropped down to sit on her porch, smiling over at him when he joined her.

“Anytime. It’s nice. Reminds me how far I’ve come since I started.”

“God, I can’t even imagine life without your diner. The town wouldn’t be right without it. And if Sookie and I can be half as successful running our inn, that’d be amazing.”

“You will.”

She shook her head. “New businesses are tough. It’s going to take a lot of luck, even with our obviously brilliant talent and hard work.”

“Nobody–and I mean nobody–is as persistent as you, Lorelai, when you put your mind to something. You’re going to make it happen. Believe me.”

“Thanks.” She leaned into his shoulder a little. “It’s so weird that summer’s almost over already.”

“Rory excited for school starting back up?”

“Oh, you know. She spent a week organizing her school supplies by color and anticipated level of use…and that was before our Harvard trip. She’s even worse now.”

Luke made a noise in agreement as they listened to the leaves overhead rustle. The air was starting to change, bringing the chilly autumn snap that New England offered along with colorful trees and small town festivals.

Lorelai broke the comfortable silence, her eyes trained on the carved archway he had helped her move a few days ago.

“I think you were right, about marriage.”

He followed her gaze across the yard to the chuppah and shifted uncomfortably. “I really wasn’t thinking, when I said that. I never thought you might hear it and…” Luke cleared his throat. “Well.”

“Hey, no, I didn’t mean your rant. I’m used to your rants. I like your rants.”

“Oh. Okay.”

“It was the other stuff, about only getting married once. I couldn’t stop thinking about it after we talked. That’s the only way to do it, right? Where there are no doubts. It’s what I want, to wait until I’m absolutely certain.”

He’d never intended to ask exactly why she and Max had called it off, though his policy of avoiding town gossip meant it still wasn’t clear to him. But refusing to stick his nose in on principle didn’t stop him from being curious.

Luckily for Luke, Lorelai rarely needed prompting to spill her secrets. Especially to him.

“It was me who ended it,” she confessed. “It just wasn’t…right. I wanted it to be, I wanted him to be the one, but he wasn’t.”

“You seemed happy.”

“I was! That’s the worst part, Luke. I was happy. I really liked Max. I know what you think of him, but he is a great guy. He was nothing but good to me. And I thought…well, when he proposed, after I got past the shock of it, I thought, there are worse things than marrying a great guy you like. I even convinced myself I loved him. I talked myself into it. Does that sound crazy?”

He considered it before replying. “No. No, it sounds like you.”

“Gee, thanks.”

“Didn’t mean it like that.” He turned toward her. “Lorelai, listen. You love everybody. You’re one of those people who genuinely likes the world, and can be really annoying about it.”

Luke smiled, to make sure she knew he was teasing. “I know, because I’m not like that. People bother me. But you want to love them–and you’re willing to take risks to be happy. Those are good things.”

She shook her head. “Tell that to the man I just left at the altar.”

“You didn’t leave him at the altar. You broke off an engagement. It happens.”

“If it happened to you, wouldn’t you be devastated? Max will never forgive me, and I can’t blame him. I can’t forgive me.”

“What else could you have done? I mean it, Lorelai–what was the better option? Marrying him when you didn’t love him, just to avoid hurting his feelings? He’ll be okay, eventually. And so will you.”

Luke put his arm around her. “You don’t have to settle. You deserve more than that.”

She hugged him from the side, burying her face in his shoulder.

“You deserve everything you want,” he promised her.

Luke didn’t realize that they were overly close on the step until Lorelai pulled back, when she was still watching him seriously from only a few inches away. Her eyes dipped down to his mouth and lingered there before she looked back up.

It was too soon, he told himself. It was all wrong.

He knew how to be her friend. He’d gotten really good at it, supporting and encouraging and maintaining the deliberate distance between their friendship and what he wanted beyond that. He was happy just being in her life.

So it was one thing to talk her through a breakup, or family drama, or work stress. He had the script for that, and could usually predict how it would be received because there had never been anyone he knew as well as he knew Lorelai Gilmore.

But in that charged moment, Luke didn’t have any words. To stop himself, or explain it…or turn it into something else.

Whenever they froze in the middle of their usual banter, whenever they almost crossed the line, Lorelai looked not only conflicted but a little bit scared. He had to admit now that there was some fear involved for him, too. He didn’t want to lose her. He’d always been afraid to risk it.

How many moments would there be? Luke wondered, with the chuppah mocking him in his peripheral vision. How many chances would he have before she really did find it, that mysterious thing she’d been looking for since he met her–with another man?

He would lose her then, in one way or another.

That was the surge of urgency and panic that pushed him past his usual hesitation.

Sure, it was a risk. But if there was any possibility that this was his moment, the one moment they were going to get, he had to take it. Surrounded by the quiet light of sunset, Luke turned toward her, and leaned in.

He gave her time to back away, but she didn’t. Lorelai watched him, eyes wide, until their lips met.

Her little sigh before they kissed was his new favorite sound.

The timing was terrible. They would hear all about it from Miss Patty, Taylor, even Sookie. None of that mattered right now.

Pulling away, Lorelai rested her forehead against his and took a breath. With all of his worries rushing back in, Luke braced for a gentle let down.

“Babette is probably pulling out her binoculars as we speak,” she whispered. “Unless you’re ready to be the stars of Kirk’s next photography exhibit using one of those paparazzi zoom lenses, we might want to take this inside.”

He should’ve known, Luke decided, kissing her again before standing up. Lorelai had a habit of doing the opposite of what any rational person would expect. It was the most reliable thing about her.

He finally found his voice again as she shut her front door. “You, uh…you want coffee?”

“Well, Luke, now that’s a truly silly question.”

But she understood what he wasn’t saying, what was harder for him to express. He didn’t use words like she did–one of a million ways that they were different.

Some things were better than words anyway, like the look he shot her on the way to her cupboard, the affectionate hint of a grin. Or how easily he moved around her kitchen, so at home in her company it was hard to remember there had been a time before they met.

Kissing Lorelai quickly became a new kind of language for Luke, one that went beyond what he did–and didn’t–say.

Their first kiss was the most important one, though, when he stopped trying to talk himself out of loving her and she stopped trying to use nervous words to hold him back. That was when they both realized that after years of conversation, they didn’t need words at all.
