trivia

born in abbotsford, canada before moving to the united kingdom in 2003

ended up moving to harrow where she would later attend whitmore secondary school and subsequently meet dev after sharing over half of their schedule

grew to be close friends to the point of accompanying him when mama patel dragged him to audition for skins in 2006.

originally had no plans of auditioning for this raunchy tv show until asked by the casting director if she was interested. marisa and dev were later welcomed into the cast as a set pair whose characters were written specifically for them as well as largely based on their real personalities and lives.

has since expanded her influence in films both at home in the west and overseas in south korea

in hindsight ; it probably wasn't planned. however, sookhee didn't like to think much about it. she could remember the way her heart was beating so hard in her chest, fearing it would somehow rupture through her ribcage.

seoul had been divided, and while sookhee had always hoped to become one of those women who would stroll down the street and enter the shiny new shops, little did she know that she would be bound to stay in the shadows. money wasn't prevalent in her family, and, she was used to seeing cloaked figures roaming around at night, up-to-no-goods trying to make a living off of anything – so, she didn't think much of it when she sat down at a small table at the local restaurant with a stranger, the heavy smoke of cheap cigarettes hanging in the air.

sooner than later, promises of youth, more time and riches were filling her ears and it wouldn't take much – only a few more days, and the cloaked person had led her down a dark alleyway and sookhee went willingly; after all, her family and her could use the money, any money. and it dawned on her too late, when the full figure of her sire was revealed; a horrible creature, something she had never seen before, a woman with a body so disfigured, barely resembling anything human. all of it, hidden away.

and so was she, forced to be hidden away by her appearance, her own curse– because of greed, empty promises and hope for a better future, just to be chained down by a fate even worse. sookhee disappeared from her life, her fate unknown by those who were close to her.

"hell, i hate it here.", sookhee cursed under her breath, every night hating from anew. the basement she lived in, worked out of, she knew it reeked – and she just hated it. sliding on her black leather gloves, she tried to hide as much of her scarred skin as possible, never revealing too much of it. she couldn't deny it, she admired the flawless skin of others; vampires and humans, and often found herself staring. she pulled on her prosthetic leg – the lower part of left leg had left her long ago, leaving her with just her thigh. her new leg - as she liked to called it - was made from hard plastic, and while it did its job, she didn't consider herself a fast being by any means.

"this forsaken place.", there was something, like it forced her, a compulsion, an odd one; she kept her place clean. sewer rats this, horrors that, sookhee just wanted to keep this quirk for herself. modern times had helped with assimilation – such like technology that would help her talk to others without having to deal with... her face. usually, it was covered by a mask, hiding away the deep scars that decorated the areas around her mouth and neck – leaving her eyes, which could be thankfully considered as normal. all the riches, fame and fortune that she had hoped for many years ago, and she was still stuck in a damp basement, hiding away her features from others – for now.

I love that Sookhee is such a powerful character. She’s allowed to use her anger AND love to save the woman she loves. And they run away together with the help of her family of thieves. Sookhee is a thief and a criminal but that MATTERS in a good way. Her anger is supporting her love and defense of Hideko. She doesn’t hold her tongue when it matters. She saves Hideko’s life. She’s so amazing we need to talk about Nam Sookhee more.

Let me tell you, if you want some complicated fucking female friendships (slash borderline more if you squint), these two, from Elena Ferrante’s Neapolitan quartet, are Good Shit. Two girls growing up in a whirlwind of poverty, misogyny, unequal educational opportunities, and crime in Naples, from the 1950s to the present day: the ways in which society fucks them over, they fuck themselves over, they fuck each other over (intentionally and unintentionally), they scheme to make their positions better, they love each other, and they hate each other are breath-taking, and the world they inhabit is insanely rich and atmospheric and wonderful. Probably the best books I read this year.

Tenacious, hopeful, loving, gritty at times, competent as hell, a leader amongst all men and women. A Mother Character™️ who’s allowed to be a lot more, and 10/10 would bang, to boot.

Elise Wassermann

Competent, bad at reading and interacting with most people but good-hearted and in search of justice nonetheless, awkward and endearing without being made overly precious or having her competencies and intelligence downplayed.

Siobhan Sadler

Competent, another Mother Character™️ allowed to be more, scary at times and loving, violent and scheme-y at times, can be amoral, but gorgeously so.
