QUEENMAKER
Release Date: April 14, 2023 | Netflix
SYNOPSIS:
After a tragic accident, a powerful fixer uses her skills to transform a civil rights lawyer into the next mayor and take down her former employer.
REVIEW:
I don't mind politics, but they can be kind of exhausting if that's the vast majority of the show. Still, that can be outweighed by fantastic performances and interesting characters, so if the show does everything else right, I'll stomach the politics to see it shine. I'll need someone to cheer for though. If every character turns out to be morally gray, that might knock it down a few rungs for me. I can take that in a movie, but it's harder for me to sit through 12+ hours of story if I don't have anyone to cheer for.
The cast, albeit out of their normal comfort zone genre, might make this worth a watch.
CAST: Kim Hee-ae, Moon So-ri, Ryu Soo-young, Seo Yi-sook, Ok Ja-yeon, Yoon Ji-hye, Kim Sae-byuk, Lee Kyung-yung, Jin Kyung, Kim Tae-hun

Since Eunha and Kala wasn’t sure on what procedures to get pregnant. Dinner together was good and everyone had a good time. Kala... Park Family (Korean)
A Korean family without history, living peacefully in a small manor house in the city. The older father, is right with his family and not looking for problems. His children are more extravagant.
Ae-Cha Park, Ae-Sook Park Girl and Chung-Su Park. Fille Ae-Sook Park et Chung-Su Park.
Ae-Sook Park, Mother of three children, Ae-Cha, Mi-Cha and Yu-Soon. Married to Chung-Su.
Bo Yung Park, Father of Chung-Su. Père de Chung-Su.
Chung-Su Park. Husband of Ae-Sook, father of Ae-Cha, Mi-Cha and Yu-Soon. This is Bo Yung's son. Epoux de Ae-Sook, père de Ae- Cha, Mi-Cha et Yu-Soon. C’est le fils de Bo Yung.
Mi-Cha Park , Ae-Sook Park Girl and Chung-Su Park. Fille Ae-Sook Park et Chung-Su Park.
Yu-Soon Park , Son Ae-Sook Park and Chung-Su Park. Fils Ae-Sook Park et Chung-Su Park.
Ae-Cha Park
The beautiful Ae-Cha is a woman who loves fashion, clothes, shoes, shopping and live in freedom ... Well, almost ... Because her father watches over her and forbids her so much. She likes to show herself, to see her, her father is the exact opposite, she must be hiding and stay in the rank of the family! What will the neighbors say ???
Ae-Sook Park
Madame Ae-Sook is a woman with a difficult to steer, the more she was forced to do a few things and the more she does the opposite to contradict you !! She is unfaithful, she is free !! But the men of the house are not of this opinion. Her husband Chung-Su, is not firm enough in the eyes of her father Bo Yung. This woman brings shame on the family. She is independent, dresses as a single young woman and runs in the shops! To save her daughter Ae-Cha she often takes her with her, but it's just to provide an alibi for her husband. Ae-Sook is the queen of lies and questionable excuses. She wants to live her life as she sees fit, that's all! Who is running this house? Certainly not her husband Chung-Su! She is in cold with Bo Yung, it is a divine masquerade of facade. Because she knows that the old man is not what he claims.
Bo Yung Park
The grandfather of the children of the house, living peacefully. He often belittles his son because his wife does not respect him, and that's intolerable! He lives with many principles of old life and going beyond, but for him it is very important. He is secretly a member of the Oasis Springs Union, but Ae-Sook seems to know or guessed it. This plague is cunning, so he must be careful. Like a vampire, Ae-Sook uses all the money from Chung-Su. He teaches good manners to his little children with passion. All his life is just an appearance, and that's the only thing that matters to him, that's why Ae-Sook is not appreciated by him.
It is the turkey of the farce, losing face in front of his face, whenever he is present. He can not keep it in his place, as his father would like. He was reprimanded by his father, used by his children, and is moreover humiliated by his wife publicly. Chung-Su loses patience and does not know anymore or nods. He lacks character and firmness, he told himself ... He made many children to his wife to have a beautiful and big family, also hoping to lock her in the house so that she take care of them ... But this is not the case...

In 1955, Moon admitted he had falsified his age to dodge the draft. Who made his “Certificate of Innocence”?
It has no court symbol or address on it, which seems inappropriate for a document from the Seoul Superior Court. It states the date of sentencing was November 21, 1955. That does not match multiple newspaper reports from the time. The Dong-A Ilbo was just one of the respected papers that carried the story. They all state that Moon was sentenced on September 21, 1955.
On that day, Moon was indicted and began a two year jail sentence. Other church leaders were also indicted at the same time.
Dong-A Ilbo: “On September 20 ... Defendant Moon did admit that he had raised his age. ... Prosecutor Kang, in the bill of indictment, pointed out that defendant Moon “had raised his age to avoid the draft (military service)””
▲ ‘X’ indicates Moon standing before the judge, probably on the day he was indicted. (Full translation is below.)
How could Sun Myung Moon be innocent if he had admitted his guilt to prosecutor Kang Seo-yong, 姜瑞龍 ? If Moon was innocent, why was he indicted and locked up, as the papers of the time reported.
Oh Yeong-choon, 呉永春, (above) was one of the most important and loyal early disciples. She joined in Busan in early 1952. Her testimonies were published in English in February, March and May 2013 by the UC / FFWPU; she had written them in 1978 after moving to the US. In the early years Moon trusted her with important money matters. During the 1955 Ewha Woman’s University sex scandal she raised a lot of money and paid it to contacts in the police and judiciary to try to stop Moon being investigated or then arrested. According to her words, when finally she had paid enough, Moon was released—furtively, after dark, on October 4, 1955.
The certificate of “innocence”does not seem to have the name of any official. It does not list all the other charges brought against Moon in July 1955. He was “charged with the false imprisonment” for three days of a 22 year-old female university student “who he forced to adopt his new religion”.
The certificate does not look like the usual Korea official documents which famously have multiple stamps on them. The one stamp it does have is so degraded that it is conveniently illegible. The certificate was apparently created on July 1, 1974, shortly before Moon’s Madison Square Gardens speech. Perhaps Moon wanted to forestall negative newspaper reports in the US in the run up to his big public event. The certificate is the same one that Bo Hi Pak presented to Donald Fraser during that Congressional investigation. Pak insisted that Moon was innocent, but the historical record seems to prove otherwise.
How well do you know your Moon?
Dong-A Ilbo (East Asia Daily News) September 21, 1955
Yesterday the first trial was held in the ‘Unification Church incident’
On September 20, ‘Unification Church’ leader Moon Sun Myung (real name, Moon Yong Myung), aged 36, appeared for the first day of his trial in Seoul District Court No. 4. At the 10:30a.m. hearing the presiding judge was Yoon Hak-no ( 尹學老 ) and the prosecutor was Kang Seo-yong ( 姜瑞龍 ) who was handling the prosecution of Moon Sun Myung. [The afternoon hearing was at 2:30p.m.] On this day the court was jam-packed with many women who seemed to be ‘Unification Church’ believers.
Defendant Moon, who has been much talked about concerning multiple alleged adulteries, on the day only stood as a defendant for charges of Military Service Act violations. This is because there were no complaints from the alleged victims. Along with him, other defendants from the same church stood trial as well: Kim Won-pil (28, violated the Military Service Act, and had raised his age by six years), Eu Hyo-won (42, failed to report to military record), Eu Hyo-min (36, same charge as above), and Eu Hyo-yeong (35, same charge as above).
As soon as the court session began the prosecution read the list of indictments and then the investigation into the facts proceeded. Defendant Moon did admit that he had raised his age. The legal profession still had two arguments about whether raising one’s age, even when the person subject to the draft was over 32 or 33 years old, was a violation of the Military Service Act. Nevertheless, Prosecutor Kang, in the bill of indictment, pointed out that defendant Moon “had raised his age to avoid the draft (military service) in accordance with the Christian doctrine against injuring others or taking life”.
Dong-A Ilbo newspaper, September 22, 1955
Religious Leader Moon given two year sentence in the ‘Unification Church incident’ prosecution
Following earlier report: The first trial regarding the ‘Unification Church incident’ started on the 20th [September 1955]. After investigating the facts, prosecutor Kang Seo-yong ( 姜瑞龍 ), recommended the following terms for the defendants:
▲ Moon Sun Myung (religious leader) = Imprisonment for two years
▲ Eu Hyo-won = Imprisonment for two years
▲ Kim Won-pil, Eu Hyo-min, Eu Hyo-yeong = Each person imprisonment for one year and six months
Why was Eu Hyo-won released in the middle of the night?
Eu Hyo-won’s diary: “September 28, 1955. In the morning, the bamboo pen broke. Yoo Kyung-gyu came to visit us. He told us, “With Teacher you are all going to be released today.” But we were still in a very uncertain mood. In the evening, Kim Won-pil, looking out through his window cried out, “This evening?” “Yes,” I answered with a loud voice, but I wasn’t sure. Thirty minutes later, there was still no news, and we went to bed. After we fell asleep, we finally heard the rattling noise of a door being opened and somebody shouting, “380, come out with your belongings.”
Lee Chang-whan was helping us pack. I gave him underwear, shirts and socks. More than ten came out, but I couldn’t see Teacher. When I went to his room 29, he was already looking in my direction. I said, “Why only me?” Teacher said, “Go as quickly as possible; that’s the way it is.” But I couldn’t turn away. I shed tears. I wanted to go back in. When I came out of jail, I saw Soo-Yung. When Wol-Sun greeted me, Tong-Suk held my hands very tightly. We returned to the church by jeep. There were [Kang] Hyun-Sil, Chung-Sook, Ok-Bong, Hwang Un-Ja, Tong-Chol’s mother, Kim Young-Oon, Kwang Yul [Yoo Kwang-Yol] and Kim Bang-Ul.”
Choi Syn-deok 崔信德 (1921-2016) joined in 1954. Later she was Professor of Sociology at Ewha Womans University in Seoul. She wrote an article about the UC in Transactions of the Royal Asiatic Society, Korea Branch No. 43 (1967) The introduction stated: “She was once an active member of the Tong-il Church [ = Unification Church ] and was closely associated with Mun Son-myong.”
“KOREA’S TONG-IL MOVEMENT” “I present here a brief picture of the Tong-il Church from the sociological point of view. … Many reports have been made about these two religious bodies. [The other was Elder Park Tae-seon’s “Olive-Tree” Church.] There is, however, no one who really knows about their leaders, organizations, beliefs and practices. We have seen many families which have been destroyed, leaving unhappy husbands, sorrowful parents and miserable children because of these new religious movements. The purpose of this research is to help in the solution of these problems of disorganization of homes, and to make a scientific study about these groups, without emotional or biased opinions. … “Before Moon’s marriage [in 1960], believers, male as well as female, who longed to meet him and talk with him could easily arrange to be with him in the living room of a home attached to the church, staying until very late. They used to talk, sing and laugh without realizing how fast the night went, until after one or two o’clock in the morning. They called this their period of direct association with the master. Its purpose was to educate and train the believers, that is, to “restore” them.” … “In July, 1955, several senior members and four leaders as well as Mr. Moon were imprisoned under an accusation of injuring public morals. (This matter was reported in papers and journals.)”

A really beautiful extension beyond classic kintsugi practice in it’s breadth, and something about the repetition of so many pieces creates an interesting new narrative.

Avenger Social Club
Nama drama: Avenger Social Club (부암동 복수자들)
Cast: Lee Yo Woon, Ra Mi Ran, Myung Se Bin, Lee Jun Young
Rate Pribadi: 8/10
Kategori: Drama Komedi 12 Episode
So, Happy Watching!

common korean food that are vegan
all 떡 (korean mochi, pronounced thuk) are made with vegan ingredients.
make sure to eat it the day you bought it, or else store in fridge and microwave before consumption! the texture completely changes when stored in fridge, gets thick and rubbery, doesn’t stay sticky / stretchy.
my favorite 떡 are:
기정떡 pronounced ghee jung thuk
very unique because batter is fermented prior to steaming. spongey in texture, tastes like 막걸리 (korean rice wine, pronounced maak gull lee) usually topped with dried dates and black sesame seeds. the ones from my favorite shop have good alcohol fragrance. all the other shops i’ve tried don’t do it well and end up having little to no alcohol
photo credit 기정떡 is the only kind of 떡 that is shaped like a muffin
photo credit many places also sell it shaped like a typical 떡, rectangular.
쑥떡 pronounced sook thuk
mugwork rice cake. texture is not like 기증떡. 쑥떡 texture is like japanese mochi and has no bubbles or sponginess. should taste like mugwort but some shops do a shabby job and tastes plain. if done right, should taste herby! go for the deep dark green ones, more likely to have enough mugwort.
인절미 pronounced in jul mee (like injure me, not in jool mee)
covered in soybean powder. texture is like softer 쑥떡. if you microwave it too long it will “melt” then harden!
photo credit usually cut into cubes or rectangles, half the height of thumb
photo credit variant: this one is green from the mugwort. this would be called 쑥 인절미 (pronounced sook in jul mee)
시루떡 pronounced shi roo thuk
like 인절미 except covered in red bean. texture is like 쑥떡
photo credit variant: yellow/orange from pumpkin. this would be called 호박 시루떡 pronounced ho baak shi roo thuk
all the 떡 shops i’ve been to also sell 약과 and 약밥 which are also vegan.
약과 pronounced yaak gwa
fried cookie. texture is sticky. the 떡s i listed are savory but 약과 is sweet. they are usually sweetened with rice syrup. after i saw a shop sell 꿀약과 (꿀 means honey) i started asking other shops whether they use honey, they said no. honey is expensive in korea, affordable ones are runny which is unsuitable for 약과.
약밥 pronounced yaak baap
glutinous rice with rice syrup, sesame oil, dates, chestnuts, pine nuts. texture is like the rice from mango sticky rice. sweeter than 떡 but not as sweet as 약과.
i almost forgot to mention 찹쌀떡. this one’s funny because i’ve only seen it at convenience store and bakeries, never at a 떡 shop.
찹쌀떡 pronounced chaap saal thuk
mochi filled with red bean paste. dusted with glutinous rice flour which will get all over your clothes if you eat it while walking. all the ones i’ve had were too sweet except for the one at an’s bakery in songdo.
when i was in singapore, potato chips were always vegan. oreo was also vegan. that’s not the case in korea.
oreo sold in korea is usually manufactured by a korean company, and those oreos are not vegan. also, most potato chips made by korean companies are not vegan.
but the following potato chips are vegan! keep in mind these are not general items but specific products. other product with same name made by different company may not be vegan.
참기름 감자칩 pronounced chaam ghi reum gaam ja chip
potato chips dotted with seaweed bits and sesame oil. really yummy!! just slightly sweet, not enough to annoy me, but would prefer it to not be there!
무뚝뚝 감자칩 pronounced moo thook thook gaam ja chip
not paper thin, these have visible width. fun to eat! have a crunchy bite to them. seasoned and taste savory, have zero sweetness.
the following are more korean junk food that is vegan.
조청유과 pronounced jo chung yoo gwa
rice crackers sweetened with rice syrup. perfect ratio, just the right amount of sweetness!
땅콩강정 pronounced thaang kong ghaang jung
popped grains with powdered peanut and sugar! airy, crunchy, sweet, and nutty :D
the following are healthy snacks
감말랭이 pronounced ghaam maal leng E
persimmon cut and half dried. no added sugar!
고구마 말랭이 pronounce goguma maal leng E
cooked sweet potatoes cut and half dried! if done well should be moist and chewy. the No Brand 무농약 반건조 군고구마 (pictured below) is my favorite! cut into thick pieces, very very very moist <3 ah... they only sell this at emart, a popular korean retail.
these two 고구마 말랭이 products are the most common! even the smallest 711 will have them.
매일두유 pronounced meh ill doo you (like mail do you)
they are all soooo yummy omg... i use the 설탕 0% with coffee concentrate to make latte! the 식이섬유 tastes like cereals. its a good mix of savory and sweet. the chocolate one is VERY impressive!!! considering this is grocery product, omg. tastes like legit chocolate! the berry mix is reeeeally yummy too! i usually hate berry flavored things because they are way too sweet and fake, but this one is like legit berry and has just the RIGHT amount of sweetness!
from left to right: 설탕 0% (pronounced sul tang yung percent), 식이섬유 (pronounced sigi sum yoo), 초콜릿 (chocolate), 배리믹스 (berry mix)
keep in mind that not all soy milk in korea are vegan. i’ve seem some that contain milk.
the following are ready made products. keep in mind these are not general items but specific products. other product with same name made by different company may not be vegan.
삼립 팥호빵 pronounce saam lip paat ho bbang
steamed buns with red bean paste inside! these can be microwaved, but make sure to cover otherwise it will be super dry! cover well and microwave 30 sec and you’re good to go. this item is sold in most grocery stores, like emart, lottemart, etc. at room temperature
햇 pronounced het baan
instant rice! peel to dotted line and microwave 90sec. the two circular products in the picture is white rice, but in the shelf below is also brown rice, multigrain, black rice, etc... if you’re in korea and a shop sells packaged food, they definitely sell 햇반. sold at room temperature
this brand also produces several kinds of rice based microwavable meals, and one of them is vegan!
햇반 컵반 고추장 나물 비빔밥 pronounced het baan cup baan goh choo jaang nah mool bee beam bap
rice with spicy sauce, sesame oil, and real veggies! vegetables include 고사리 (pronounced go sah ree, it’s a type of fern), carrots, bean sprouts, mushrooms
not included in picture is the 햇반. the 햇반 sits on the edge of the bowl/cup, covering the vegetable packet, sauce packet, and spoon. all you need to do is microwave the 햇반 (open till dotted line, microwave 90sec) and then mix with the packet contents! really yummy :D sometimes i buy two, eat one with just the sauce packet, and save the veggie packet for later to double the veggies hehe
this item is sold in all grocery stores and convenience stores at room temperature.
photo credit bawn ah pee teit
CJ 밀당의 고수 김말이 pronounced CJ mill daang eu gosu gimal E
CONTAINS OYSTER SAUCE (im one of those vegans who are ok with eating oysters) glass noodles with veg, wrapped in seaweed, battered, and deep fried! found in the frozen food section in most grocery stores. instructions say to fry it in a pan.
in the frozen food section at a popular korean retail called emart. microwave for four minutes and you have a yummy fried rice with thistle! skip the sauce, it seriously ruins the already so flavorful and suuuuper yummy fried rice.
photo credit the final product looks exactly like the packaging picture! one package (left) has four servings (1 serving pictured on right)
4 min microwave fried rice (and skip the sauce) in the emart frozen section like the previous product, but has shiitake and different kind of leafy veggie! they’re both really yummy in their own way. im so impressed with these two! when in frozen state the rice grains are all separate from each other, it’s really easy to pour. and when its done in the microwave the rice stick to each other like fresh rice, and have just the right amount of oil! savory, hearty, flavorful, and not too heavy :D so sad this 표고 시래기 one only comes with 3 servings :(
피코크 생깻잎무침 pronounced peacock seng kyet nip moo chim
perilla kimchi!!!!! this is a pleasant surprise!!! all kimchi in korea have pickled shrimp but wow!!! this one doesnt?!??! perilla kimchi is really yummy! i am so gonna try this out!! like all peacock products, this is available at emart. it is sold in the refrigerated section.
cubed sweet potatoes deep friend and coated with rice syrup and almond slivers! 맛탕 in general should be vegan unless they are sweetened with honey, which is unusual and would be mentioned in the dish name. this item can be found in the frozen section of emart. all you need to do is either microwave 30 sec or let it defrost at room temperature for 20 mins.
피코크 계피호떡 pronounced peacock gye pee ho thuk
fried 떡 filled with cinnamon sugar! one box has four. most 호떡 (chewy 떡 pancake) contain egg. however, this product is not only vegan, but also assembled already! you can find it in the frozen section at emart. however, it is not pre-cooked. you have to cook it yourself with oil and frying pan.
be careful when you eat it, the inside is melted sugar and it is super super hot and runny! so careful not to burn yourself and careful not to get the syrup on the carpet / clothes / etc.
피코크 호떡 pronounced peacock ho thuk
like the previous item but without cinnamon, and has nuts!
피코크 팥호떡 pronounced peacock paat ho thuk
like the previous item but not runny, has red bean paste and sesame seeds inside!
beverages. wherever you go the following will always be vegan (unless it has honey, which is highly unlikely)
수정과 pronounced soo jung gwa
spicy and sweet cinnamon drink, topped with a few pine nuts and slices of dried date
식혜 pronounced sheek hye
sweet malt drink with soft papery rice grains
