Parasyte: The Grey
Tumblr media
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2024
Parasyte: The Grey (2024, South Korea)
Director: Yeon Sang Ho
Writers: Yeon Sang Ho & Ryu Yong Jae (based on the manga by Hitoshi Iwaaki)
Mini-review:
I enjoyed this way more than I expected. I was a pretty big fan of the anime that aired a decade ago, so I was worried about this adaptation. But that wasn't necessary: instead of making a simple live-action remake, they tried to approach the story from a different point of view, making sure it could coexist in the original manga's universe (as shown by the very last scene). That being said, this one doesn't delve too much into its themes, opting instead to focus on the horror and action elements. And damn, it does deliver. The action scenes make great use of the parasytes' "tentacles", and they're shot with some stunning camerawork. Yeon Sang Ho's directing fires on all cylinders, more than making up for the pretty mediocre CGI. It also helps that the cast does fantastic job. So yeah, Parasyte: The Grey might not be as deep as it could, but if you're in the mood for a thrilling horror-action spectacle, then you should give it a try.

Focus
In the vast expanse of space, where stars twinkled like distant diamonds and galaxies danced in a cosmic ballet, two souls found themselves intertwined in a tale of destiny and sacrifice. Yeon Soo, a brilliant scientist with a mind as sharp as a laser beam, and Ki Peum, a daring explorer with nerves of steel, were brought together by the whims of fate.
Yeon Soo had always been fascinated by the mysteries of the universe. From a young age, she had gazed up at the night sky with wonder in her eyes, dreaming of unraveling its secrets. Her intellect was unmatched, her curiosity insatiable. It was no surprise when she was chosen to lead an expedition to explore the farthest reaches of known space.
Ki Peum was a seasoned pilot who had braved countless dangers in his quest for adventure. His rugged exterior hid a heart that beat for discovery and excitement. When he met Yeon Soo, their connection was instant - like two stars colliding in a burst of light.
As they embarked on their journey into the unknown, they faced challenges that tested their courage and resolve. They encountered alien civilizations that defied imagination, planets teeming with life forms beyond comprehension, and phenomena that defied all laws of physics.
But amidst the wonders of the cosmos, there lurked darkness as well. A malevolent force sought to destroy everything they held dear, threatening not just their mission but the very fabric of reality itself. As they raced against time to save not only themselves but all sentient beings in existence, Yeon Soo and Ki Peum discovered depths within themselves they never knew existed.
Their bond grew stronger with each trial they faced together - love blossoming amidst chaos and uncertainty. And when the final showdown came, it was not just their skills or technology that saved them but the power of their connection - forged through hardship and shared purpose.
In the end, as they looked out at the infinite expanse before them - galaxies swirling like whirlpools in an ocean of stars - Yeon Soo and Ki Peum knew that no matter what challenges lay ahead, as long as they stood together nothing could ever truly defeat them.
And so they sailed on into eternity's embrace - two souls united in purpose and love against all odds in this boundless universe we call home.

Robotics, Existentialism and Jung_E. So What's The Glitch?
Now playing on #Netflix is a South Korean film about a warrior who could pave way for the #future, but what else can she gain or lose? We offer a #moviereview and added thoughts in what this movie needs to get a part two. #analysis #sciencefiction
Available on Netflix In the future, the planet Earth is no longer habitable, and humanity’s life in orbital colonies has become harder. A civil war broke out after some of them formed their own government. In the conflict Jung_yi (Kim Hyun-joo) the soldier, not Jung_E the android, become a legend. The movie explores a bit of her life and sadly, she’s no Joan of Arc. I would have appreciated that…

Alchemy of Souls (Seasons 1 & 2)
Year : 2022 | Country : KR | Nb of episodes: 30
My rate: 9/10
Synopsis :
Set in a fictional country called Daeho that does not exist in history or on maps, it is about the love and growth of young mages as they overcome their twisted fates due to a forbidden magic spell known as the "alchemy of souls", which allows souls to switch bodies.
It follows the story of an elite assassin named Naksu, whose soul is accidentally trapped inside the weak body of Mu Deok—Jang Uk's servant from a powerful and noble mage family in the country. The young master of the Jang Family, Jang Uk, holds a dark secret about his scandalous birth. He wants the formidable assassin to help change his destiny.
Main cast :
Lee Jae Wook as Jang Uk
Jung So Min as Mu Deok
Hwang Min Hyun as Seo Yul
Shin Sung Ho as Go Won
Yoo Joon Sang as Park Jin
Oh Na Ra as Kim Do Ju
Arin as Jin Cho Yeon
Yoo In Soo as Park Dang Gu
Go Youn Jung as Naksu/Cho Yeong/ Jin Bu Yeon
My thoughts on this drama :
I hadn't loved a Korean drama so much in ages. Wow! Everything is so so good in this one. The casting is amazing, for both seasons. Although I understand their choice to switch actresses for the main lead in season two, it still felt a bit jarring at first.
The story is fantastic, and the actors all aced their roles. The season two felt like the opposite to season one (Alchemy of Souls: Light and Shadow is the subtitle of the season/part 2). It was sometimes a bit hard to follow, but the story is amazing and very satisfying.
A Favorite ?

Rating: R
Tumblr media
One of the most original time-travel thrillers since 12 Monkeys. A brilliant subversion of the Time Paradox trope, with enough plot twists to keep you entertained until well after the movie is finished. Predestination is an amazing movie with great performances from Ethan Hawke and Sarah Snook. It’s a movie that will feel like Inception, when it comes to messing with your mind and barely anyone has heard of it. It is highly underrated and unknown, sadly.
4. Train to Busan (2016)

A zombie virus breaks out and catches up with a father as he is taking his daughter from Seoul to Busan, South Korea’s second-largest city. Watch them trying to survive to reach their destination, a purported safe zone.
The acting is spot-on; the set pieces are particularly well choreographed. You’ll care about the characters. You’ll feel for the father as he struggles to keep his humanity in the bleakest of scenarios.
It’s a refreshingly thrilling disaster movie, a perfect specimen of the genre.
3. Serenity (2005)

Serenity is a futuristic sci-fi film that serves as a feature-length continuation of the story-line from the TV program Firefly (2002–2003). The story revolves around the captain (Nathan Fillion) and crew of the titular space vessel that operate as space outlaws, running cargo and smuggling missions throughout the galaxy. They take on a mysterious young psychic girl and her brother, the girl carrying secrets detrimental to the intergalactic government, and soon find themselves being hunted by a nefarious assassin (Chiwetel Ejiofor). The first feature-length film from Joss Whedon (The Avengers), Serenity is a lively and enjoyable adventure, replete with large-scale action sequences, strong characterizations and just the right touch of wry humor. An enjoyable viewing experience that stands alone without demanding that you have familiarity with the original program beforehand.
2. Sorry to Bother You (2018)
Genre: Comedy, Fantasy, Science Fiction
Actor: Armie Hammer, Danny Glover, David Cross, Ed Moy, Forest Whitaker, James D. Weston II, Jermaine Fowler, John Ozuna, Kate Berlant, Lakeith Stanfield, Lily James, Marcella Bragio, Michael X. Sommers, Molly Brady, Omari Hardwick, Patton Oswalt, Robert Longstreet, Rosario Dawson, Steven Yeun, Teresa Navarro, Terry Crews, Tessa Thompson, Tom Woodruff Jr., Tony Toste, W. Kamau Bell
Director: Boots Riley
Tumblr media
In the year of the Netflix TV Show Maniac, another absurdist title stole critics’ hearts. Sorry to Bother You is a movie set in an alternate reality, where capitalism and greed are accentuated. Lakeith Stanfield (Atlanta) is a guy called Cassius who struggles to pay his bills. However, when at a tele-marketing job an old-timer tells him to use a “white voice”, he starts moving up the ranks of his bizarre society. A really smart movie that will be mostly enjoyed by those who watch it for its entertaining value, and not so much for its commentary. It is like a Black Mirror episode stretched into a movie.
1. Ex Machina (2015)
Genre: Drama, Science Fiction
Actor: Alex Garland, Alicia Vikander, Chelsea Li, Claire Selby, Corey Johnson, Domhnall Gleeson, Elina Alminas, Gana Bayarsaikhan, Oscar Isaac, Sonoya Mizuno, Symara A. Templeman, Symara Templeman, Tiffany Pisani
Director: Alex Garland
Rating: R

Ex Machina is the directorial debut of Alex Garland, the writer of 28 Days Later (and 28 Weeks Later). It tells the story of Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson from About Time), an IT developer who is invited by a billionaire CEO to participate in a groundbreaking experiment — administering a Turing test to a humanoid robot called Ava (Alicia Vikander). Meeting the robot with feelings of superiority at first, questions of trust and ethics soon collide with the protagonist’s personal views. While this dazzling film does not rely on them, the visual effects and the overall look-feel of Ex Machina are absolutely stunning and were rightly picked for an Academy Award. They make Ex Machina feel just as casually futuristic as the equally stylish Her and, like Joaquin Phoenix, Gleeson aka Caleb must confront the feelings he develops towards a machine, despite his full awareness that ‘she’ is just that. This is possibly as close to Kubrick as anyone got in the 21st century. Ex Machina is clever, thrilling, and packed with engaging ideas.

Opinion
This is a very good series, I binge watched it in a few days. I loved the queen! How strong, resourceful, and independent she was. I loved all the characters, especially the queen and prince Seongnam. I also loved how the king was very supportive of her. The series had a lot of different topics, from motherhood to sexuality. It's a drama series. There are no gore or sex scenes. I recommend this series to anyone who likes history dramas.

Unlock My Boss episodes 1&2 ✔️
I just finished watching the first two episodes of “Unlock My Boss”. I really like the plot and I want to see where it goes, but it’s still all a bit alien to me. The editing stile, a 4th wall break, the Truman show reference… It was all a bit odd to me. Not things you see in kdrama often. Then again, times are changing and content is evolving. It’s interesting enough to keep me intrigued.
As for the plot, this is where you can consider the spoilers begin. ↓
So Park In Sung is a young man who has already completed his mandatory military serving and college. Due to his background however, he’s had to give up on his dream to become an actor and instead does odd jobs to make ends meet while he’s trying to get a stable job at a company. One thing leads to another and In Sung ends up finding a smartphone that belongs to the CEO and founder of Silver Lining, Kim Sun Joo. The very company he got rejected by. To his surprise, the CEO is actually trapped inside the phone after he was involved in a mysterious car accident and needs In Sung’s help to solve the mystery.
So Silver Lining is an IT company and two of the main things it develops are an AI called Baro (think of it as a fictional Siri or Alexa) and a VR that lets you experience real things. Now if we put the VR on the side, there’s a scene where In Sung finds out that the company was working on a better version of Baro, but it was still just beta. The CEO himself (Sun Joo) was a test subject for that AI. He says that it’s meant to be able to study its individual owners deeply to be able to assist them better in their daily lives. What I think might’ve happened after the accident is that now somehow the AI thinks it’s the CEO. But I’m not sure. That’s just a possible outcome I thought of, because of that conversation they had. Why else would they tell us that the CEO himself was a test subject for this AI?
There is also a clear love interest in this drama that I think will be taking some focus, because it’s going to be a big part of In Sung’s life as a CEO. He risked a second strike just to not have her fired. Again, I’m not big into the romance so I don’t think I’ll be commenting much on that. Also, I’m still not really sure how I feel about Seo Eun Soo playing the role of Jung Se Yeon. I’m not sure if she suits the role. It feels a little awkward when I watch her. I know that there was a comment that she’s “more AI-like than an AI” in the very beginning. If that’s the show’s true intent for her character than I don’t think I’m going to like that particular character much. However, she will make good ally for In Sung and Sun Joo.
Speaking of, I like the little bromance baiting they’re doing. I always fall for that though so I never take it into consideration when rating a drama (for myself). I know it’s a trap, but it’s a trap I see from miles away and still walk into. So I can’t really blame the drama for it.
Last but not least, it’s obvious the butler had a big part in whatever happened to Sun Joo, but I don’t think the nanny is all that innocent either. Considering that my theory about the Sun Joo in the phone being the beta AI that thinks it’s Sun Joo is right, then where is the real Sun Joo or his body? I don’t think the person who contacted In Sung in the preview is the actual Sun Joo, but again, considering that theory might be correct then the real Sun Joo would have to appear eventually. And that is why I think the scene with the nanny, where she asks if the butler has been able to contact Sun Joo, is actually bait. Because if she was also involved, then it makes sense why she’d ask that, because now neither knows what happened to Sun Joo (because his body is missing). Although, that could be true even if it is the actual Sun Joo in the phone, because he’d still be missing…. But what happened to his body….. I don’t know.
These are all still very early theories, we’re only two episodes in. I can see myself finishing this drama. The plot is interesting, I’m interested in In Sung’s fate and how meeting In Sung changes Soo Jun. These are my top interests.
Okay, that’s it for now!

Jung_E
Tumblr media
Movies watched in 2023
Jung_E (2023, South Korea)
Director & Writer: Yeon Sang Ho
Mini-review:
Yeon Sang Ho is a hit-or-miss director for me and, unfortunately, Jung_E is more miss than hit. The actions scenes are solid and the movie does have some interesting ideas about AIs and consumerism, but it never really has time to explore them properly. The CGI isn't horrible, but it's not like it's spectacular either, and the acting is honestly very uneven. To sum up, this movie is rather underwhelming, but it's not very long and it might be useful if you're bored and have nothing else to watch.

what KB character would you most want to meet in real life and what KB character's fictional universe do you want to meet him in?
In real real life - Han Joon hwi. He’s like the best friend and classmate you can have. You can’t go wrong with that guy 😀 Added advantage if I’m Kang Sol A ❤️
Second choice - Lee Gook-soo, because, who doesn’t want a guardian angel?
In the fictional universe, Lee Rang, though I’d of course want to be on his side. Added advantage if I’m Yeo-hee. I get to be kissed by him 🥰😍 I’ll give the man a big huge bear hug and tell him, I’m not Yeon. I won’t abandon you ❤️❤️
