Two of Cups + The Star
your romance is a wish granted. finally, finally, they're here. finally, it's here! the time where you don't have to feel lonely anymore - you'll never feel that way ever again. laughter, joy, sweetness, kisses - be at ease. all of these are things you have found someone to share with. your love is a dreamy fantasy of love and devotion and miracles. at first, your chest gets too tight when they're around - until they become as natural as the air in your lungs. deck: ethereal visions tarot.
Sonya & Jennifer
The Lovers + The Tower
meeting this person shook your whole world. crumbling down is everything you thought you knew about life and love. their warmth, their generosity, their naivete, their knowing…! you don't know how anything made sense before them. all you know is that nothing will make sense afterwards. deck: the tarot of the divine by yoshi yoshitani.

Disaster ship - "Femme Fatale and the Apex" (Jennifer x Sonya "Sonnie")
TW: Sexual references, enslavement and swearing.
Here's some disaster queers! [Also note that I did not get any faceclaims not draw at least a face for Sonya so I went for Jennifer's canon appearance and the closest thing I could find that would work as a reference to Sonya's appearance... which is the Kraang Leader's exosuit from the Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie] Anyway on with the show:
[summary explanation of choices above]
This Disaster Ship is called "Femme Fatale and the Apex", between Dicko's personal assassin/trophy blonde Jennifer (no last name) and god-complexed angry beastie lesbian Sonya who came from the question "what would have happened if Sonnie had been taken by an inter-dimensional insane scientific creature called Malvolio after the traumatic incident that destroyed her original body but left her mind alive and was enslaved to do 17 death battles for combat data?"
These two are in a tense situationship, both are women (though Sonya doesn't mind being called "it" and has fully embraced what was meant to be a dehumanizing statement), Jennifer is 25 while Sonya is 30, Jennifer is bisexual while Sonya is a lesbian. Why are these two are so problematic? Well Jennifer is a remorseless killer who has murdered plenty of people under Dicko's command, while Sonya went on a murder spree as soon as she was released from Malvolio's programming. Also she developed a god-complex during her confinement under Malvolio (a worship/praise kink as well).
How compatible are they truly? 53%. They are both horrible and kinky enough that they're perfect for each other but so horrible that they are awful for one another so its a 50/50 chance besides the fact that the only people they can stand is each other. How compatible do they personally think they are? Well Jennifer believes she really isn't that compatible with Sonya, considering the human/beastie has a very high opinion of herself and looks down on everyone but she's also a slick looking beastie with an almost monster-god like appearance and that awakens something in Jennifer that she thought she grew out of. Sonya on the other hand is just delusional and thinks their perfect for each other except for the fact Jennifer makes her take baths and doesn't get bloody enough. And when Jennifer has to keep appearances up where its like she's the boss, she doesn't miss an opportunity to boss around Sonya which both gets her off and annoys her.
The biggest complaints they have with each other? Jennifer's top two is that Sonya calls her weak (and not in a kinky way nor the degrading kink she wants) and the fact that Sonya is an absolute bitch to clean blood off because the stains just stick to the metal, so she has to spend Dicko's savings to deep clean the beastie. Sonya's complaints about Jennifer lay on two issues; she worked with a pimp (who she didn't even kill and take power from) and Jennifer spends more time looking pretty than she does getting bloody.
Both are extremely jealous of one another (for varying reasons) and get jealous when they pay more attention to someone else more than they do the other. Both are very manipulative and pull out anything they can use to keep the other. Both are extremely dangerous, though Sonya more due to the advantage of being a beastie. Though Jennifer is more prone to wandering eyes (from Sonya's perspective, Jennifer is looking for other options, but in actuality, Jennifer is just contrasting everyone from Sonya, like "tch, they don't compare to the elegance of Sonya") and is also a criminal to boot. There's also the fact that Jennifer can be rather oblivious (as in clueless about the dangers of the criminal underworld would do after finding out a woman was in power of a powerful operation like Dicko's). Sonya can be pretty absent, and is very self-absorbed.
Jennifer hasn't had any experience with love so she's quite confused when her feelings grow beyond the sexual fantasies she achieved to make reality and she's absolutely seething about it. Sonya is a mixed bag, on one hand she knows that she's in a unhealthy sense of love and thrilled about it (delusional). Sonya's reasonable side is also seething about it too, due to it being Jennifer, and she's absolutely confused on that. Jennifer ups her seductive charm to keep Sonya wrapped around her finger, though can be irritating at the wrong times, while Sonya is a mix of stoic, sappy and charming at the same time. Jennifer and Sonya cannot stop thinking about one another the moment they "met" through Malvolio. The difference is the fact Sonya hogs Jennifer's attention at any given moment while Jennifer would rather try to ignore the love epiphany. Jennifer is like a revolving door; on good days, she sees Sonya as an ally and would never think to hurt her (not just because of the disadvantage it gives her) but there are days where Jennifer is so pissed off at Sonya that she'd definitely try and intentionally sabotage their efforts out of spite and sell Sonya if she could. Sonya on the other hand, despite what she may say, is too obsessed with the fact Jennifer doesn't mind her new appearance and rather finds it attractive to the point of sleeping with her to even think of hurting Jennifer.
What was their first meeting like? Ugly. Very ugly. Not only was Sonya under voiceless enslavement with Malvolio using her to perform in the beastie death matches (with the possibility of dying) and Jennifer was the trophy girl of the pimp hosting the arena who she tried to signal for help but kept getting ignored. By the time she was released, the programming that kept her under Malvolio's control also restricted her ability to feel pain so... Sonya was not in a happy mood, and pretty much slaughtered everyone except Jennifer, Wes and Ivrina (Malvolio and Denise managed to escape through his secret tunnel/portal). Jennifer acts indifferent but she's as obsessed with Sonya as Sonya is with her. It's all about the power they hold which attracts them. They know they're relationship is more situational than well-thought out, but Sonya probably thinks their already married by the fact she's "claimed" Jennifer through bites and marks. Sonya can't really communicate a lot, but Jennifer doesn't generally overshare more than she just shares more than Sonya does. Both would hide a body with one another; hell, Jennifer hid a slaughterfest for Sonya. They're both in it to make the other worse and get more power.
Why are they together despite it all? Both are in it for common interest revenge against Malvolio, Denise and the wealthy men who look down on them. Plus Jennifer is an apologetic monsterfucker and Sonya thinks Jennifer's hot. Redeeming qualities both appreciate about one another? Jennifer appreciates Sonya's cleverness and intelligence, especially when helping her navigate being a king (or rather, queen) pin. She also admires Sonya's noble revenge against Malvolio, intending to prevent him from ruining anyone else's life permanently, which Jennifer can't help but be shocked by the fact Sonya would want to do it for those reasons. Sonya on other hand appreciates the fact Jennifer has some moral lines despite being a otherwise remorseless killer, and also that despite being vain at times, Jennifer is not lazy.
Do they get along? Sonya thinks they do, Jennifer still has problems with Sonya though. Do they have fun? Oh hell yeah they do. Do they like each other? Despite the problems and unhealthiness of their relationship, they do like each other for the person hidden underneath all the resentment and immoral attitudes they present.
Here's the template for anyone looking to release their own disaster ships.

Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms picks up shortly after the explosive finale of Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge, the 2020 blockbuster hit that initiated these animated films – which are based on one of the most popular videogame franchises in history. In Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms, our team of heroes are besieged by the enemy forces of Shao Kahn – forcing Raiden and his group of warriors into a deal to compete in a final Mortal Kombat that will determine the fate of the realms. Now our heroes must travel to Outworld in order to defend Earthrealm and, simultaneously, Scorpion must find the ancient Kamidogu before it's used to resurrect the One Being – which would mean certain destruction of all things in the universe. Time is short and the stakes are high in this action-packed continuation of the Mortal Kombat journey.
Joel McHale (Community, Stargirl) and Jennifer Carpenter (Dexter, Batman: Gotham by Gaslight) return to their lead roles as Hollywood star-turned-fighter Johnny Cage and all-business warrior Sonya Blade, respectively. Also returning for the sequel are Jordan Rodrigues (Lady Bird, The Fosters) as Liu Kang; Patrick Seitz (Mortal Kombat X, Aggretsuko, Naruto: Shippuden) as Scorpion & Hanzo Hasashi; Artt Butler (Her, Star Wars: The Clone Wars) as Shang Tsung & Cyrax; Robin Atkin Downes (The Strain, Batman: The Killing Joke) as Shinnok & Reiko; Dave B. Mitchell (Mortal Kombat 11, Call of Duty franchise) as Raiden, Kintaro & Sektor; Ikè Amadi (Mass Effect 3, Mortal Kombat 11) as Jax Briggs & One Being; Grey Griffin (The Loud House, Young Justice, Scooby-Doo franchise) as Kitana, Satoshi Hasashi & Mileena; and Fred Tatasciore (Robot Chicken, Family Guy) as Shao Kahn.
New to the Mortal Kombat Legends voice cast are Matthew Mercer (Critical Role, Justice Society: World War II) as Stryker & Smoke; Bayardo De Murguia (Tiny Pretty Things) as Sub-Zero/Kuai Liang; Matt Yang King (Mortal Kombat 11 video game, Justice League vs. The Fatal Five) as Kung Lao; Paul Nakauchi (Carmen Sandiego, Overwatch) as Lin Kuei Grandmaster; Emily O’Brien (Days of Our Lives, Constantine: City of Demons) as Jade; Debra Wilson (World of Warcraft: Shadowlands, MADtv) as D’Vorah.
Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms is directed by Ethan Spaulding (Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge, Batman: Assault on Arkham) from a script by Jeremy Adams (Supernatural, Justice Society: World War II) and based on the videogame created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. Rick Morales (Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders, Batman vs. Two-Face) is Producer. Jim Krieg (Batman: Gotham by Gaslight) is Producer. Executive Producer is Sam Register. Ed Boon (NetherRealm Studios) is Creative Consultant.

Kip&Co with Bábbarra Women’s Centre, Kip&Co x Bábbarra
Kip&Co and the Bábbarra Women’s Centre joined forces to create this spectacular range of textiles and homewares, developed over two years. The collection features eight unique artworks from seven Bábbarra Women’s Centre artists – Deborah Wurrkidj, Elizabeth Wullunmingu, Helen Lanyinwanga (deceased), Janet Marawarr, Jennifer Wurrkidj, Margot Gurawiliwili, and Raylene Bonson. Every element, from the artwork selection, to product range, colours and labels, has been led by the women at Bábbarra.
Profits from sales of the collection will be divided equally between Bábbarra and Kip&Co, and copyright specialists the Copyright Agency were engaged from the very beginning of the project to ensure best practice for licensing and ethical processes were upheld throughout its execution.
The Bábbarra Women’s Centre is one of the most important community spaces in Maningrida, a remote Aboriginal community in Arnhem Land at the tip of the Northern Territory.

Gorman and Mangkaja Arts Resource Agency, Mangkaja x Gorman
Iconic fashion label Gorman worked with Mangkaja Arts Resource Agency in Fitzroy Crossing to produce a collaboration with five senior Aboriginal artists: Ngarralja Tommy May, Sonya Kurarra, Daisy Japulija, Nada Rawlins and Lisa Uhl. The collection was photographed in Fitzroy Crossing, and the collection was modelled by local women.
The two-year development process around this 25-piece collection was supported by the Copyright Agency as a national benchmark in fashion licensing rights, making the adaptation of the Mangkaja artists’ works on Gorman silhouettes a landmark achievement. Funds from the sale of the collection were donated to Mangkaja Arts Resource Agency to support youth programs within the art centre.

Annie Cooper, Annie Coop Textiles
Australian textile studio Annie Coop is owned and operated by designer Annie Cooper. The label’s fabric design, production, and manufacturing are entirely conducted in Melbourne, and sold in interior showrooms throughout Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the USA and UK.
Taking cues from her travels throughout Mexico and Spain, Annie has created an original aesthetic with an uncompromising approach to quality, craftsmanship and sustainability. Her made-to-order fabrics are printed on ethically sourced linen, recycled polyesters, and cotton wallpaper using large format digital textile printers.

Ellen McKenna, From Art to Fashion
The debut large-scale, solo exhibition of artist Ellen McKenna showcases the complex process of developing a garment of clothing through art. Titled ‘From Art to Fashion’, the exhibition takes the form of a step-by-step visual journey, beginning with painted canvas artworks, then patterned fabric displays, and sewn garments. The show’s objective is to highlight clothing garments as items of worth – an alternative to the seasonal turn-arounds of the disposable fashion model.

Magpie Goose, Magpie Goose x Ikuntji Artists
Magpie Goose is a platform for Aboriginal artists to share stories and generate income through the creation of wearable art. The objective of the Ikuntji Artists collaboration (a member-based, not for profit, Aboriginal art centre led by a board of seven local Indigenous directors) in particular was to showcase the stories of female artists from the Western Desert.
This capsule clothing collection features eight unique designs originally created by five senior female artists from the Ikuntji (Haasts Bluff) community, located 230 kilometres west of Alice Springs. These artworks designs were then set up for screen printing by Magpie Goose, and eventually crafted into clothing.
As a non-Aboriginal owned business, Magpie Goose fosters the celebration of Aboriginal culture, people and stories through the medium of fashion, and helps to create meaningful opportunities for financial gain for their First Nations collaborators.
Castle, Little Garden Bedlinen
The Little Garden range combines hand painted aspects of Castle’s art practice with the commercial production of bedlinen. The collection began as a small painted artwork of a garden, created on paper using pencil, crayon, oils, gouache, acrylic, texta and pastel. Ordinarily this artwork would be reduced down to seven or eight colours before being printed onto products, but for the first time in Castle’s history, this design was digitally printed to capture every single colour and brushstroke of the original artwork. The Little Garden range includes quilt covers, sheets, pillowcases, and a bedspread.

Baina, Collection .01. Photo – Greta van der Star. Pampa, To-yik-ca. Photo – Victoria Aguirre.
Baina, Collection .01
Melbourne-based label Baina was founded by Anna Fahey and Bailey Meredith. Drawing on their experience in the fashion industry, the pair set out to create considered, organic cotton bath towels that would complement and elevate the commonly neutral bathroom.
Baina’s inaugural range is a seven-piece collection designed to work in any combination, allowing customers to mix and match colours and prints. Products are made from 100 per cent organic cotton and produced in Portugal by a Global Organic Textile Standard certified mill.
Revisit our feature on Baina’s debut collection here.
Pampa, To-yik-ca
The To-yik-ca rug collection is a collaboration between Byron Based homewares label Pampa and the Wichí (Indigenous) peoples of Argentina. This collaboration saw Wichí and Andes weavers engaged to create textiles, which were adapted by Pampa to a large format for the weaving of the rugs.
Designs in the To-yik-ca (meaning ‘loom’ in the local dialect of the Wichí people) collection are representative of the traditional lands of the Wichí people. The end result is a beautiful collection of rugs that balance the contemporary with the traditional. Rugs in this collection feature bold geometric shapes inspired by nature, woven in sheep’s wool, and dyed in Pampa’s signature earthy and pastel tones.

North, Tiwi Strong Women’s Collection
The Tiwi Strong Women’s Collection is the latest fashion collection from not-for-profit organisation North, in collaboration with the Jilamara Arts and Crafts Association.
In this collection, artists of Pirlangimpi and Milikapiti and Waurrumiyanga were invited to share their culture through hand screen printed fashion. Each of the designs was handmade in the community, printed in a workshop with artist Timothy Growcott, then hand-sewn in Melbourne.
North exists as a vessel to celebrate, support and broaden the exposure of textile design by Indigenous artists from remote community art centres. They are a non-Aboriginal owned business, governed by Indigenous and non-Indigenous board members.
Revisit our feature on this collection here.
Gemma Threadgate, Threadgate
If names are anything to go by, Gemma Threadgate chose the right creative pursuit! The Sydney-based textile designer produces small-scale collections for her eponymous label from start to finish, which means designing, hand-printing, cutting and sewing the clothing and homewares with the help of one other maker.
Inspired by Ted Spagna’s 1975 book, Sleep, which explores the intimate narratives of human sleep behaviour through time-lapse photography, Gemma linked the universal act of sleep with the repetitive motions of screen printing.
Threadgate’s subsequent six-piece Sleep collection comprises a newly designed trouser, shirt, dress hat, tote bag and cushion cover. The capsule is guided by slow fashion principles.
We’re proud to partner with heritage Australian brand Laminex to realise The Design Files + Laminex Awards program 2020. Laminex is Australia’s leading supplier of modern laminates, quality engineered stone, timber panelling and more. Find out more here.

Three results for OC archetypes, a listing of four of my fictional crushes (oh fuck-) and two worst ship charts ever. You can find the quiz here. You can find these and the template for the chart below.
Three results for Archetypes for OCs from The UnTitledverse, The Silver Chronicles and A Radioactive Calamity Of Love, Bombs & Gore.
ALFRED "JEFF" HOPPER (THE UNTITLEDVERSE)
I don't this is necessarily correct. Throughout the first two sagas (The Pefect Storm and The Omniscient Rule sagas), Jeff has been nothing more than a supporting and often times tertiary protagonist. Maybe not a main but definitely important. He has moments of selfishness, sure, but that's not often. The only really selfish "messed shit up for everyone" moment was when he took the opportunity to change course of events which worsened the space-time continuum while he had been helping the Time Guard chase after a time-travelling mass serial killer fugitive who had been making Time unstable in the first place, which wasn't even out of malicious intent, rather he just wanted his bestest friend back from non-existence, that being Lena Elliot. So yeah, he screwed up, but not to a villainous extent.
ALEXANDER KHAOS (THE SILVER CHRONICLES)
Oh god another villain result. Which... is more accurate for Alexander than it is for Jeff. He's more of an antagonist to Silva, that's for sure (being the right-hand man and Chosen Extraordinaire, which is basically Jacob's top elite Chosen, of Jacob Seed). He has unresolved trauma in regards to his time in Wellington Wells and has embraced his role in Hope County in Eden's Gate, though if a stronger or more ideological compatible person came around, he'd take his loyalists (which includes Hannah McCalkin) and leave Jacob behind.
ALPH DOLEN (A RADIOACTIVE CALAMITY OF LOVE, BOMBS & GORE)
Link to Minecraft Poem for anyone interested. Oh good, I worried it wasn't going to be different. And OH WOW! Alph got read to filth here. Kind of ironic that he craves love and wants to be surrounded by love but is the "Lone Wanderer". Doubly ironic when he's ghoulified... something that should be where he is rejected by everyone and everything, but ends up with more than he could ever ask for, especially with Ress and Amata... until Arcane Urias ruins everything, as he does.
Here's the list of my top four fictional crushes:
Maki Zen'in - Jujutsu Kaisen (Specifically post-Shibuya Arc)

(I want to be lifted up and carried bridal-style in her arms)
2. Soundwave - Transformers Prime (when I was young and both completely blind without glasses I didn't know I required and literacy blind to whatever I was watching, I thought this Soundwave (the only one I had been introduced to at the time) was female... he's still pretty aesthetically pleasing though, cool AF, and a caring parent to Laserbeak so...)

3. Faith Seed - Far Cry 5 (daydreaming-about-frollicking-in-green-flower-fields-and-living-in-cozy-cottages lesbians UNITE!)

(however fair warning she might get you high enough to talk to God and try to convince you to join her older adoptive brother's cult)
4. GLaDOS - Portal

(...her soothing condescending voice that belittles and tries to get you killed and her smooth + robust curves in her awesome design enchant me...)
Honourable Mention goes to (look'em up):
5. Sea Empress - Subnautica
Two of the worst ship charts for The Silver Chronicles and Life, Despair & Monsters.

Translation for the unreadable:
What draws them together? Initially the mystery surrounding each other as no one except a very specific few know much about their former lives, and their opposing factions forces them to interact a lot, and thanks to the Bliss, that's what they mostly end up doing. Plus they mostly fit each others preferences.
What stands in the way? They are at war in two opposing factions, one that wants to kill/detain (Resistance) and the other that will kill but will try to indoctrinate Silva (Eden's Gate). Opposing morality, beliefs and trust issues also get in the way.
What are their good traits? Silva and Faith find companionship with another due to their similar past/current circumstances, and Silva's compassion and unexpected kindness is bizarre and appealing to Faith, as her cunning and passions are appealing to Silva. Both are willing to sabotage their own factions to keep the other around a bit longer, plus their determination to find a peaceful resolution.
What makes them hopeless at romance? Trust, or lack there of. Silva is weary that Faith will report anything she says to Joseph to better get her into Eden's Gate, while Faith is weary that Silva is trying to get close to manipulate her into coming out into the open to better take her down. Both are correct in the beginning but later down the line it gets muddied. Silva also refuses to speak of her past (understandable) except for the vaguest of truths while Faith doesn't fully open herself up in fear of being scorned. Not to mention it's been a long while since Silva had been in a romantic relationship and Faith is very inexperienced.
Describe them with one trope: Toxic Toxic "I can fix her" & "I can make her worse/better" Enemies-To-Lovers Yuri.

Translation for the unreadable (Also note that when Jennifer is talking about her partner, it's mostly complaining about Sonya, and Sonya's image is more a reference to what I closely envision her as):
What draws them together? They both fail to kill each other and have a bone to pick with both Dicko and Sir Enigma Malvolio and they're also considered "non-human" now.
What stands in their way? Sonya is unstable to the point she's agitated enough to kill others on instinct which Jennifer is trying to control much to Sonya's distaste. There's also the fact Sonya is like a 12-foot something mecha-beastie which she doesn't think Jennifer finds attractive. Jennifer is in denial of her feelings and believes if she loses control of Sonya then it will be right back to square-one like it was with Dicko or she'd die, either one.
What are their good traits? They both have a common interest revenge against Dicko (successful) and Malvolio (work-in-progress), and Sonya acts as Jennifer's trump card and intimidation factor in their illegal business. Both also have an appreciation for their brutal honesty and openness with one another and relatability (with Jennifer as a synthetic human and Sonya's brain transferred to a mecha-beastie). They have no problems committing murder together.
What makes them hopeless at romance? Jennifer is used to being treated as an object of lust and since her freedom from Dicko and take over of his business has pushed to be in control of everything (including Sonya) and is trying to ensure she doesn't lose that control and denying all romantic/sexual feelings, while Sonya is a victim of Malvolio and his treatment of her has left a lot of psychological scars where she dehumanizes herself and does everything in her power to prove it correct too.
Describe them with one trope: Toxic "I can make you so-so-so worse baby" bloody murder Yuri situationship/partnership on a mission of revenge with a pinch of monsterfucking and goes from "I want to kill you" to "I'd kill for you" pipeline.

Summary
Well in advance of next year’s live action silver screen reboot, the Mortal Kombat franchise finally makes its return to the realm of animation – and it’s about time. Though a fair amount of you may have some recollection of the Defenders of the Realm animated series, it’s the 1995 feature-length animated flick Mortal Kombat: The Journey Begins which springs to my mind whenever a discussion such as this comes up. It’s somehow fallen through the cracks of history, as it was never properly released on any format other than VHS. Well, it was included as bonus content for the first live action Mortal Kombat flick’s Blu-ray release, but that’s not quite the same.
This time, the same talented folks at WB Animation who bring us those DC direct-to-video movies we love so much have taken a stab at the beloved fighting game series. To be succinct, they’ve adapted the events of the initial tournament depicted in the original video game, only with a modern spin on it. But unlike The Journey Begins, it can’t be filed under “guilty pleasure.”
Positives
On the one hand, some viewers may come away with that “been there, done that” feeling. Believe me, I understand why, because the original Mortal Kombat has always served as the jumping off point for nearly every adaptation in other media, be it the motion pictures listed above, or the novelization penned by Jeff Rovin and released in 1995 (yeah, that was a big year for this brand).
But on the other hand, the filmmakers have implanted many surprises along the way. The narrative may hit most of the familiar beats as not to stray from hallowed canon, sure, but a fair amount of the focus is placed on fan favorite Scorpion, thereby allowing us to breathe some fresh air away from the usually exploited quartet of Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade and Raiden. The tournament’s actual conclusion itself is presented in a such a manner that I was able to accept it as both something already established and fresh; a fine balance is indeed achieved.
Something else I found myself quite pleased with was that of the wide array of characters included. Although the usual suspects are at the forefront, we’re treated to cameos from Kombatants spanning the entire series, including Motaro, Baraka and even Nitara. More than a few viewers may be surprised to see Quan Chi playing such a big role this early on.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Of course, you’re probably wondering where the violence level is at, and I promise that it’s off the charts. To be quite honest, this is probably the most violent animated movie I’ve ever seen; the blood spurts, amputations and X-ray bone fractures are presented in all of their gory glory, affirming this isn’t one for the kids.
When it comes to bonus content, four featurettes are available for consumption. While not entirely lengthy, they are decently informative, profiling the main characters and shedding light on how various aspects of the production came together, including character and setting designs, as well as sound.
Negatives
If anything put me off, it was that the voice acting can be a little too over the top at many points. While the visuals are somewhat inspired by anime, the delivery of dialogue is overdone more than I’d prefer. Very few of the characters were given the subtle treatment in the recording booth, and I’m sorry, but that can sometimes take me right out of the story.
You’ll probably find it odd that I’m going to mention the violence in both the positive and negative sections of this review. Despite not being squeamish myself, the cartoonish ultraviolence often became just that. I’m not sure how much time passes between people getting chopped like carrots, but it’s never too long. Furthermore, I’ve concluded that nobody in this universe depicted can even do something as simple as washing their hands without getting a compound fracture. Eli Roth will need several changes of clean pants if he’s ever to watch this.
Verdict
Let’s get one thing perfectly clear: although Scorpion’s Revenge isn’t a perfect movie, it’s probably the closest thing we’ve ever received to a perfect adaptation of Mortal Kombat outside of the video game medium. I, for one, hope this Legends series is granted more entries in the coming years, as I’m very anxious to see other tales get similar treatment. After all, this franchise has been around for 28 years, and that means there’s a generous amount of material to mine.

Across a Crowded Room: 2020 Videos
by Doug Reside, Curator, Billy Rose Theatre Division, New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center
January 15, 2021
Since 2013, more or less annually, the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts has invited new musical theatre writers, composers, and actors to Across A Crowded Room–a musical theatre incubator where strangers meet and write musicals together. There is perhaps nothing more clichéd at this point than to note how unusual the past 12 months have been, but early in the pandemic it became clear there was interest in continuing the series in 2020, even in a modified way. Last year seven groups created new 20 minute musicals with the feedback from experts in the industry. The teams presented their final work, not on the stage of the Bruno Walter Auditorium as is the recent custom, but via pre-recorded videos produced for a special Zoom event. Today, we present those eight performances for the world to see. It was a difficult year in many respects, but the quality of the work created this year is among the best I have seen in the seven years of the program. Enjoy the 2020 Across A Crowded Room Playlist!

Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge
youtube

A couple weeks ago, the DLC story expansion to the videogame, Mortal Kombat 11 was released and added an additional few hours of narrative that picks up on where the core MK11 plot left off. I finished that up a few days ago, and picked away playing with the new characters and doing online battles with a friend I occasionally duke it out with online. On top of that, several weeks ago Warner Bros. released a straight-to-video animated movie dubbed Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge (trailer). Animated features based on the MK license are nothing new; one is include as a bonus feature on the original live action BluRay I reviewed here a few years ago. That and the other ones released in the previous century varied greatly in quality, and a pivotal difference with Scorpion’s Revenge is that it features some of the brains behind the highly acclaimed DC animated films working on it. Assault of Arkham’s Ethan Spaulding is directing, while Teen Titans Go vs. Teen Titans penned the script. I ate up too many MK comics, movies and videogames over the years so I have an admittedly high familiarity with its canon. With a title like Scorpion’s Revenge I was initially led to believe this would be a side story focusing on Scorpion’s rivalry with Sub-Zero. It initially starts out that way with Scorpion’s origin story where he returns to his village to see his family and fellow villagers slaughtered by a clan headed up by Sub-Zero. Sub-Zero (Steve Blum) ultimately slays him as well, and in hell Scorpion (Patrick Seitz) makes a deal with one Quan Chi (Darin De Paul) to restore his essence to enact revenge while also entering the Mortal Kombat tournament. That opening scene is graphically intense for an animated feature, and Warner Bros. granted the animators a lot of leeway to maximize everything they could out of the R rating. If you have played the recent MK games and are familiar with their ‘X-Ray Attacks’ then a lot of the gore and violence in Scorpion’s Revenge will ring a bell.

After that initial intense setup for Scorpion and Sub-Zero, the rest of the film is essentially a remake of the original live action film, yet has some noticeable differences to switch things up. Liu Kang (Jordan Rodrigues), Johnny Cage (Joel McHale) and Sonya Blade (Jennifer Carpenter) return as the three core protagonists that meet up once again on a boat leading to mysterious location where the Mortal Kombat tournament is emanating from. Sinister sorcerer, Shang Tsung (Artt Butler) is behind the festivities on his own personal island of hell, and has all kinds of trickery to distract the heroes. While the general broadstrokes of the live action film and this animated feature hits similar beats, a lot of it is freshened up. Some of the key battles feature different matchups, and the characters from the second game have varying degrees of supporting roles, and I feel for poor Jax (Ike Amadi) because the filmmakers here found a new way to de-arm him, which is as excruciating as ever to relive again and again. I got into Scorpion’s Revenge style of mixing up the exposition this time around. Sonya Blade has an edge to her and has absolutely zero tolerance for Cage’s nonstop flirting with her. Having Scorpion constantly out for revenge on Sub-Zero in their rivalry is a better use of those two characters instead of as lowly goons for Shang Tsung like in the live action film. Raiden (Dave B. Mitchell) is back as the wise elder with an occasional pun that guides the heroes along their journey and sets them up for an awesome final stretch of battles against Quan Chi, Goro and Shang Tsung. I will re-emphasize the gruesomeness of the violence here as the artists hold nothing back and ensure it matches the pedigree established by the games. It all adds up for a gritting finale as the warriors lay waste to one another.
There is a decent amount of bonuses on the BluRay. Producer, Rick Morales and Writer, Jeremy Adams are on hand for the feature commentary track. They go out of their way numerous times to appreciate Warner Bros. for letting them go all out with the violence and offer up other random insight and production facts throughout. There are four mini-behind-the-scenes extras totaling just over 20 minutes breaking down the characters, lore, weaponry, animation and sound design of the film. All are quick watches with an interesting anecdote or two, but not worth going out of your way to see….except maybe the one on sound design where it was amusing to see how they showcased all the various foods squished for the blood splatters and bone crushing sound effects. Part of me wants to give Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge an easy recommendation because of their excellent use of the license and canon that any MK nut like myself will get a thrill out of, and it is a breezy 80 minute watch to boot. Watching its take on remixing the plot from the heralded live action film for a new generation was something special to immerse myself in to witness how it all unfolded. However, if you are not all that familiar with the near 30 years of MK lore a lot of the characters and general plot beats will either go right over your head or will likely incite many unintentional chuckles. Suffice it to say, only fans of the series should go out of their way to see Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge. Bonus update, upon doing research for this I discovered the long delayed live action reboot film wrapped production at the end of 2019 and is currently slated for a January 2021 theatrical release date. Here is hoping it will up to the legacy of the original as being one of the best live action videogame film adaptations.
