ok so i finished my little stylized designs for crime and punishment characters!
top: raskolnikov, sonya, svidrigailov, porfiry, luzhin.
bottom: dunya, razumikhin, lizaveta, alyona, marmeladov, katerina.
i had a lot of fun with little design details, like katerina having a widow’s peak, or making the buttons on dunya’s dress match raskolnikov’s coat.

i feel the need to add to the sonya propergander. because she is falling behind. this should not be happening.
like ok yeah dunya is composed. dunya makes sacrifices. dunya has a gun.
but so much of sonya’s entire heart and soul runs through the narrative’s veins. she has unspoken depths that she reveals through her devotion to god and her family and her father and raskolnikov, but these depths are not simple and pure. she has as fraught a relationship with god as she does with her family, but she loves them even more for this. she feels an unwavering obligation to the work of compassion and this scares her as much as it leaves her in awe of her own capability for forgiveness. she doubts the validity, the usefulness of her suffering. she feels the immense power of the small moments of love that lie all around in this story of grime and pain and finality. she is not a virginal paragon, she is not a self-flagellating hedonist, she is not a legal or moral or social genius, she is not a perfect victim. she is enough.
Dunya propergander: pls pls pls pls
Sonya propergander: Main girl. Love her, so nice & sweet & very nicesies

On a mission gone wrong, John Constantine and Zatanna Zatara end up stranded in 400s Siberia. Luckily, they teleport out. Unluckily, they forget to close the portal behind them.
Fast-forward to the 1800s, and Raskolnikov is released from prison, married to Sonya and expecting their first child when he touches a ancient portal... and falls into Gotham City as of fifteen years ago. He wakes up having swapped identities with Jack Napier, but that's only the beginning.
Will Raskolnikov triumph over his murderous tendencies? Or will the Joker rise again?

this is such cool analysis. i think i'll always associate the book more with summer, because i feel like that contrast is a lot of what gives the book its character, but i can totally see why someone would label it as a winter book. this definitely extends to a lot of other themes of contrast in the book, especially with light. where the world is perpetually bright, but raskolnikov's mind, and by extension his room, is dark and murky. another reason why i really love sonya's candle motif--her gentle introduction of light and faith into his life is not harsh and all-consuming, like the heat of summer and the midnight sun, but yielding and enduring, like warmth in the cold of winter. she herself is suffering through an internal winter of sorts.
still summer vibes for me though. maybe it's because i tend to get more heavily depressed in the summer, idk lol.
Crime & Punishment is winter, Brothers Karamazov is autumn, The Idiot is spring, argue with the wall

Hello friends and enemies. Ok so what I’m saying is that y’all are wild for shipping Raskolnikov and Razumikhin. Don’t get me wrong I freaking love their relationship but I just don’t think it should be romantic. I feel that they’re just too different. While there is something to be said for “opposites attract,” I think there needs to be something in common.
And do I ship Rodya and Sonya? Yes. Are they also opposites? Not exactly. That part when Sonya leaves Rodya’s room and is all worried about him coming to see her and is walking without paying attention to her surroundings...big Rask energy (but actually I love that part because it feels like Dostoevsky was deliberately drawing the parallel between the two of them). I feel that Rodya and Sonya complement each other.
This is also why Dunya and Raz work together: both are incredibly selfless but while Raz is explosive and spontaneous in everything he does, Dunya is analytical and takes time to think things through.
I think that the relationship between Raz and Rask is a perfect example of male friendship that can be loving and close without being romantic.

mini-essay on mary magdalene in crime and punishment haha
Tumblr media
painting: "the penitent magdalene" by onorio marinari
i'm not sure if this was intentional, but in crime and punishment, dostoevsky seems to subvert the whorification of mary magdalene.
think about it--the first time we meet sonya, it seems obvious that she will be a mary magdalene figure, since she's a prostitute. we assume she will, like the common narrative we are told about mary, exhibit faithfulness to raskolnikov and bear witness to his resurrection. to a certain extent this holds true. but sonya does so much more than bear witness to a self-induced resurrection of raskolnikov.
in a way, this allegorical vision of sonya as mary magdalene and raskolnikov as jesus christ simply plays into raskolnikov's pre-existing delusions of grandeur. as a matter of fact, it is sonya's compassion and unwavering ability to see the good in raskolnikov that brings about his resurrection. she is not mary--she is the christ figure, and raskolnikov is lazarus. (side note: mary is often portrayed wearing scarlet, while sonya's iconic shawl is the opposite color, green.)
despite the fact that we see sonya as a version of mary magdalene, she is not the one who needs to repent. raskolnikov needs to repent. in fact, this idea of mary magdalene as a whore and repentant sinner comes almost wholly from a speech by pope gregory I circa 591 AD, in which he conflates mary magdalene with an unnamed "sinful woman" who anointed jesus' feet (and, interestingly, with mary of bethany, lazarus' sister). this obsession with female impurity and repentance is indicative of larger sexist trends in the christian church, and i think it's quite impactful that sonya is allowed to be a christ figure, and that raskolnikov's crimes of violence are portrayed as a more severe blight on his soul.
sonya reads raskolnikov the story of lazarus the first time he visits her apartment, and it is an intimate scene exploding with anxiety and pain and compassion. she is the one to save him, not through strength, nor even through purity, but simply through love.
tl;dr sonya semyonovna fucking rocks.
p.s. sorry if the lack of capitalization makes this kind of hard to read, i started with this gimmick and i've got to stick to it.

Tumblr media
orange aesthetic for sonya of crime and punishment, based around the painting "magdalene with the smoking flame" by georges de la tour which i recently discovered.
i wanted to make this mainly using personal associations i have with sonya. she's one of my favorite characters in all of fiction, so i will probably be making more aesthetics for her (and other characters!) in different colors.
