My new little used Olympus OM-D EM5Miii

came yesterday, to use with the used 12-45mm

zoom I got earlier last week for landscapes and

close in macro. So I have replaced a $1900

camera, the Sony RX10iv with its 24-600mm

zoom that I used for years, with two cameras

and two zooms, counting the OM-1 and

the 100-400mm zoom I got last May,

costing not quite twice as much and weighing

considerably over twice as much. ???

I am not sure how this is progress…but I am

determined to make it work. Yes, I can get

much closer at both ends. Both the 12-45

and the 100-400mm zooms focus to .5x

(1x with the digital tel-extender), and 800mm

it turns out, brings birds and wildlife significantly

closer and fills the frame better than 600mm

did…and again, with the 2x digital tel-extender

I can get some reasonable frame fills at

considerably further away. This is good

and I am enjoying both ends. Dragonflies

in particular with the 100-400…they were

never very satisfying with the Sony…and

flowers, moss, and mushrooms with the

12-45. Both bodies have focus stacking

for macros where the whole subject is in

focus at the same time. This is good.

And I have not really even begun to explore

the landscape possibilities…or people.

And it still all fits in a single backpack

which I can and do carry everywhere,

and my Cotton Carrier makes the bigger

zoom and body manageable in the field

for a whole day…so I am not struggling

with the extra weight and bulk, at least

not yet…no far trips planned until December,

so the jury is still out on that. And the

image quality is certainly, if only slightly,

better, especially in low light, so I have

that to look forward to in the tropics.

Progress? More the fun of learning a whole

new system. And really, what am I progressing

for or to? It is not like I did not have fun

with the Sony, for many years, and I certainly

plan to have fun with the OM Systems gear.
