Been thinking constantly about how Tikal would remind Sonic of all of the good, more positive aspects about water. Which is kind of a big deal, considering his great dislike of being submerged in it.

I personally think that since he can't run nearly as well in it, deep water makes Sonic feel trapped. Vulnerable, even. Then there's the whole drowning factor too, something that probably scares him more than any other life threatening event because of how possible it is for him as again, he can't just run / use his speed to his advantage.

One of Tikal's biggest associations is with water of course, half due to her friendship with Chaos and the other half because of how (I headc) she has always liked water in general. She's a proficient swimmer and enjoys lying in lakes or pools to just feel the water on her body. The only things water-related that I can see making her a bit nervous are intense thunderstorms because it began storming when Chaos took on its perfect state in the past (in the present too), but when it comes to being in bodies of water, she enjoys it.

Tikal is tranquil, refreshing, and quite pretty to Sonic. All of these traits can describe placid, sparkling waters at sunrise or sunset; sights he always loves witnessing, and can also describe a nice cold beverage that he chugs down after a vigorous day of running. There's also the detail how water is interwoven with life itself, and Tikal reminds him of that in a couple of ways. I think her presence relaxes him to the point that, on good days, he would even sit at the bank or dock of a body of water to dip his feet into, as he watches her swim about or float.

She's voiced her willingness to teach him how to swim, and he has declined, but told her that he might be open to it one day. He's stubborn and would rather not deal with deep water at all.
