miyazaki does a similar thing. food always plays a significant role in more emotional scenes.

Now I'm gonna have to watch my way through all of his movies to notice this. Not a bad way to spend my Saturday, especially since I'm writing a semi-sad scene today.

He also has a habit of having plucky/curious/adventurous young girls as his protagonists, which always fascinated me. I actually brought this up at a lecture given by an expert on his work (who also got to meet with him) and I wish I could remember what he said Miyazaki's explanation for that was, because it was the kind of reasoning that just made me respect his work even more. /o\
