re-reblogging bc I still have more to tell lol
Once again marvelling at the absolute infectious power of Sonic the Hedgehog, as a character and a series. So many of us got the bug from just... watching one playthrouh, seeing him in a crossover game, or parody and spoof dubbing. It doesn't matter.
Because once he gets you, he gets you. Here for life. A brain main stay. Commandeers your obsessive tendencies. Many such cases.

ive seen you post about doctor robotnik's ring racers occasionally on twitter and would like to hear your overall thoughts on the game
I'm enjoying it a lot! It plays well, has a ridiculous number of unlockable characters and tracks, and is generally just really polished. This would be impressive even for a paid indie kart racer that cost like $20-$30, but for a freeware fangame that's somehow built off of Doom? It's nuts. So much love and care went into this. I've been having a lot of fun playing through all the Grand Prix cups and clearing out the challenge board, which I've only completed 47% of it even with over 15 hours of playtime logged.
It's absolutely one of the most hardcore kart racers I've ever played, though, and that's gonna turn some people off. While playing solo even easy mode can be difficult, especially thanks to the rival system that gives one CPU buffs over the others. Anything below 150cc is a complete joke for me in Mario Kart, but even playing on the "normal" difficulty in Ring Racers (now renamed "intense" in the 2.2 patch) kicks my ass, and if you place poorly in a Grand Prix race it gives you a game over and makes you redo the race. I can't even imagine touching the higher difficulties at my current skill level.
This is compounded by how technical the game is and how many options are at your disposal. Spin dashing, tricks, fast drops, collecting and spending rings, an item roulette that can be manually stopped, a high risk high reward chargeable melee attack when you have negative rings, the ability to harass and be harassed by other racers while positioning yourself before the start of the race, gates that can only be passed through when you have a high level of boost, lots of items with different quirks that reward skilled play. And of course, perhaps most daunting of all to new players, there's the game's unique slope physics designed to mimic how they work in the 2D Sonic games, which will often require you to either spend rings for a small boost or stop and charge up a spin dash to get up a steep hill.
All of these add a lot of complexity to the game that can be pretty daunting early on, which is why it has an infamously long story-driven tutorial to introduce all of these mechanics. I'm not sure said tutorial actually does the best job introducing how those mechanics will actually be put to use in races, but I can't blame them for thinking the game needed it. (I do have to admit I am annoyed by the game's insistence upon framing everything via Sega Saturn inputs, though. I had to open the settings screen to figure out what buttons the tutorial actually wanted me to press.)
Some of these things have already been addressed in the first couple patches, of course. You can now exit the tutorial way earlier, some unlock requirements have been relaxed, there's an option to let the game automatically use your rings for you, easy mode has been made easier, a handful of problematic courses have been tweaked, etc. And I'm sure they'll continue to refine the game based on player feedback. But it's probably always going to be a fairly hardcore game. It's hard and has a high skill ceiling by design. Nintendo's never gonna make a super technical new Mario Kart for sickos - not on purpose, at least. They need it to be a pick-up-and-play party game that sells 70 million copies. But a freeware fangame not beholden to shareholders can experiment more and try to cater to that more hardcore crowd. Say what you will about Ring Racers, but it absolutely has a specific creative vision of its own beyond "Sonic Mario Kart," and I respect that even if the game sometimes frustrates me

After watching SAGE's 2024 trailer, you ever get the feeling that most people want to be making indie games instead of fan games nowadays,? Every year there's been less and less fan works there.
youtube
This is the first year I've really felt it in any meaningful way.
There have been attempts for more than a decade to rename SAGE to drop the "Sonic" part. I've always pushed back against that and at this point the branding is too strong to give up, I think. People know about and come to SAGE because the brand is strong. Renaming it would be a death sentence.
Taking off my business hat, it's a bummer to see fangames in the minority here. Everybody wants to hop on that indie game gravy train and chase the success of Pizza Tower (seriously, count how many Pizza Tower clones are in the trailer this year) or Freedom Planet or Spark the Electric Jester or whatever.
And it's easy to congratulate people for striking out on their own and making original games. I was one of the many voices urging Sabrina to divorce Freedom Planet from the Sonic franchise and make it into an original game she could sell. So she ran a crowdfunding campaign (multiple, actually), was successful, and now we have two Freedom Planet games. And that's great!
But... does that mean all fangames should go away forever?
The example I lean on the hardest is comic books.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A lot of the guys who created the biggest super heroes aren't around anymore. They gave up control long ago or are straight up dead now. These books are effectively officialized fanfiction now, as are the $300,000,000 movies based on them. An ever-increasing number of people writing, drawing and directing these characters today were not alive when they were originally created.
But people still keep writing Batman stories, officially or otherwise. Because there are some stories you can only tell with Batman. Now, you could break off and make your own character that's similar to Batman, build up this history for him, and then finally tell your original story with that character. And maybe that's satisfying, to have built something of your own like that.
But for one: that's a lot of work. Batman is interesting because he has decades (almost a century now) of history behind him to play off of and work with. There are people out there who will tell you to just start writing your dream story and forget about building up to it first, but that's more about motivation and confidence than the idea that stories don't need historical context.
And two: that's already been done.
Tumblr media
There's a good chance you know who Rob Liefeld is from his, uh, "distinctive" art style. He also created Deadpool, a katana-wielding mercenary assassin that dresses in red and black, whose real name is Wade Wilson. But before Deadpool, he created Deathstroke, a katana-wielding mercenary assassin that dresses in orange and black, whose real name is Slade Wilson.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here is a guy who has built a career on copying his own work (and the work of others) over and over and over again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Did it make Rob Liefeld rich and famous? Technically yes, but he kind of got rich because other people made better work using his characters, and he's famous for being kind of a hack.
So which is better?
Creative output you can do right here, right now, today, but is considered "fanfiction" or "fanart" or a "fangame", which may or may not lead to you being the person handling the official thing at some point down the road...
Or spending years of your life toiling to bring an original concept to life, and even if you struggle through all of the boredom and hardship of getting your original product out the door, it gets lost in the noise of now-million other creators trying to do the exact same thing. And then, at the end of your launch, after 2, 3, even 5 years of working and working and working, you've only made enough money to cover rent on your apartment for a month and a half.
Or, to put it another way:
Are you ditching fangame development because you have a legitimately great story you want to tell, or are you just doing it because you can't make money on a fangame?
Are you just creating another Bloodstrike?
As someone who has struggled to justify putting lots of hard work into a fangame myself, and have both made very popular fangames and some not-so-great original games, I don't know if I have a definitive answer for you. But I do wish there were more fangames at the fangaming event, and I will say, as always, if I could get paid a livable wage for making fangames, I would drop everything and do it in a heartbeat.

A short Journey Through My Art History
2025 Almost draws near... and its been almost 12 years since I started drawing so I thought might as well share my personal story as an artist, where I came from and how things changed.
---
Around the year 2012 my best friend in school looked over my random school doodles and said I had potential... she back then had a Deviantart account of herself... recommending me if I also want to join her, why not use the name of my first oc... and even if that isn't fully true cause I had an oc before Fumiko... Casey was an oc I wanted to get rid off so fast in favour of her... and so I started as a Tradtional artist that... well basically was at her start using how to Manga books and learning... I noticed Humans weren't really something I felt great with drawing but my Spagetti Anatomy...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sonic characters... and so the very first fandom I started in was with making Sonic ocs. Slowly my friend also helped me get Paint tool sai and my first drawing Tablet which I played around with... and slowly became happy that I was able to make commisions and get myself some good art of my ocs. I had a great friendgroup I spend time with Skyping and it was a fun time.
Tumblr media
However... eventually I noticed the usual meme of hating on Sonic kinda hitting myself... I had fun with my ocs but eventually some blogs adding them to the "bad sonic ocs" Category... kinda made me stop... looking back at them sure they were not the greatest but also only my start when I didn't know what OCs could be... and just my first attempts... Eventually I left the fandom just to get out of the Sonic zone and also get back to attempting to draw Humans again and see how it goes.
I did make much more fanart of games I loved too, testing my waters on what I could do and if I can give my favourite games and media some love.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And eventually I mostly went back to OC making over Fan ocs for the things I liked back then Like Pokemon, Kid icarus and many more.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But what really got me passionate and drawing a lot was eventually finding a small group who looked for people to Join a Nicoronpa Danganronpa fangame... and so I met the Nicoronpa group... a long lasting friendgroup that I worked on for a game with together.
youtube
It was a passion project I drew a lot for an especially the Birth of Carol being my main Sona... but eventually... things went busy... people started playing Multiplayer games and I stayed at my single players... my last bigger project was a Fire emblem Three houses House called the Green Fox... and then I seeked something bigger to do again... just to arrive at the Announcement of Octavinelle and Twisted wonderland coming in.
Tumblr media
The Birth of Monsville, Hourglass Station Academy and around 112 or so OCs that kept me going, friends I cherish, a place where we could go wild... even if it had its down side... people who said they could tell others what they are allowed to do, Drama, people who you think you are friends with but... then drop you... It wasn't always great in this fandom like it was in some others but.... it did keep me passionate... I felt happy to make more and more inspired ocs of Games I adored with all my heart...
However sadly recently I also notice I am losing passion for it... Hence my recent change.
Tumblr media
I went on the become multifandom and focus on the past... the times I made fancharacters to ship with Canon characters or other ocs for fun... the times I just enjoyed Yapping and Fleshing out characters...
I know thanks to work and my circumstances I am far from my old activity and the stuff I put out but... I still want to continue this journey... as a hobby artist who just does things for fun and wants to draw and write her Silly ships where she can... even if I lost and gained a lot... I sure hope that the future goes better... and things slowly calm down more.
Thank you for listening to my story.

Have some things to add here I think (on the official games side, idk anything about fangame stuff lol), Mania Plus and Unleashed are both excellent games but they're ones I personally would suggest waiting a bit on before playing. Unleashed because its pretty difficult and punishing compared to Generations, and Mania because its way way way more fun to play if you've played the original 90s Sonic games (otherwise called "Classic" Sonic). You can play all of these games in the Sonic Origins collection very easily!
Also, of course, the obligatory mention of how "Sonic Unleashed" is actually two different games made by two different teams - Xbox 360/PS3 is one game, Wii/PS2 is another. They have the same story and locations and so on, but the game design is completely different! Please play the Xbox 360/PS3 version when you get to it and just sort of think of the Wii/PS2 "supplemental".
how do i get into sonic? there's so much sonic media and i didn't watch/play any of it when i was a kid
I didn't either! Just find something that interests you and go for it, it has a little something for everyone. There's no need to consume anything specific or in any order; even if it's fan projects, I'm sure you can find something that interests you if you wanna get into it!

Do you have a sonic oc
I AM SO GLAD YOU ASKED!
I have about 4 (technically 5 but I disowned one) I don't have good drawings of two of them yet but here's the other two!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the left we have Comet! I've actually started drawing a whole comic based around his story, though I need to slightly rewrite it as well as actually finish it before I can fully redraw it. (lmk if that sounds cool and I might post it?)
And on the right, we have Lux the Lynx. Lux is my very first Sonic OC and I project onto him far too much ^_^
The other two are Echo the Pangolin who I plan to eventually make a fangame around, and Coco the Tiger who truly is the forgotten middle child of my OCs

Have you ever tried to make your own Sonic game? Would you? Any ideas??
I've never seriously tried to make a Sonic fangame, no. As a kid I was more drawn to the idea of making a Mega Man fangame, mainly due to the fact that I was already editing Mega Man sprites all the time and also because I loved the level editor in Powered Up. (I never put any real effort into making a Mega Man fangame either, though.)
The thought has definitely crossed my mind as an adult, although if I was to ever make a Sonic fangame it would probably be very different from the traditional Sonic gameplay. I'm not sure I could really wrap my brain around the twisty, interweaving paths of 2D Sonic level design, and also there are already plenty of fangames and indie spiritual successors that play like Genesis era Sonic out there.
Unsurprisingly, the two main ideas I have are both Archie-based. (For as big as the Sonic fangame community is, there really isn't much out there inspired by the Archie comics. Most of the fangames I've seen with the Freedom Fighters are based directly on SatAM. This seems like an obvious niche to fill.) The first and most obvious idea is to do a Metroidvania starring Bunnie, where she gets different upgrades for her robot parts along the way. The thought of doing something kinda like Battle Network with Sally and Nicole, with Sally exploring the physical world and Nicole exploring cyberspace, has also crossed my mind.
These would be fun things to work on, but I'm not sure how much effort I'd be able to put into them because, you know... I couldn't sell them. SLARPG's done well - better than I hoped, even - but from a financial standpoint I don't know if I could dedicate multiple years to a freeware fangame before moving on to my next commercial project, and from an energy standpoint I'm not sure I could juggle two games at once. But I've thought about the possibility of doing something very small as a fun experiment while I learn Godot. So who knows.

Trying to add more information to the Maria Robotnik's Fast Track AU.
The first post didn't really have much information regarding the AU, so hopefully this next post can add more too it. A little justified since I just made the AU pretty much.
This one will attempt to... well... add more information to it, mainly ideas for the paint schemes, tracks and a few other characters as well.
Paint scheme ideas.
I orginally said ideas for the cars, but I actually ment to say paint schemes, since the cars themselves are 90s NASCAR stock cars.
I also headcanon that they're specifically based on the CES prototype cars seen here:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yeah, they're pretty much the same as the cars from the regular arcade game, just with a more basic look and without the rear tires popped out.
Anyways, I don't need to explain Maria Robotnik's car, since I already mentioned that her car is literally the player's car in Daytona USA. Specifically the AT colors. You've all probably seen this car before, you know what it looks like.
Tumblr media
Now... onto the others...
Melody [LAST NAME SPOILER]: #13, Scorpio Plasma
The sponsor is a reference to the one seen on the normal level car from Daytona USA 2, while the number is a refrence to the Hornet's number in Daytona USA Deluxe/CCE.
Helen: #67, Chaos Cola
Frances: #68, Chaos Soda
Just felt like Chaos Cola and Soda should be sponsors really. Plus, Sonic X is mostly based on the Adventure-era games, so it'd fit.
Princess Elise: #06, Balance
This one I brefly mentioned in the last post, but the car is pretty much one big Daytona USA Deluxe/CCE reference, as the #99 Balance car is one of the cars that you can drive in the game. The number is a pretty obvious nod though.
Sara: #93, SEGA
This catgirl's sponsor is the company that made Sonic themselves! I know that Sara is a gamer in some of the OVA's scenes, so I thought her sponsoring a video game company would fit. The number meanwhile is a reference to Sonic CD's release date (1993). The Sonic OVA does have Metal Sonic in there, so it makes sense to me.
Hope Kintobor: #14, SOAP
Hope's number is ment to be a reversed version of Maria's number, and the sponsor is based on the SOAP Shoes ad seen in City Escape.
Molly: #58, Emerald Notwork
Sponsor is just another reference to an ad seen in City Escape.
Merlina: #00, Phantom Full Force
The sponsor is a reference the one seen on the hard level car from Daytona USA 2.
Sage: #51, Eggman Empire
The number is a nod to Roudy Burns' number in Days of Thunder, and I figured that Eggman would definelty sponsor his empire on the car, he is a narcissist afterall. And to fit with the retro vibe, the Eggman Empire logo could be the same on seen in Sonic 2 down below.
Tumblr media
Claris Sinclar: #16, Oriole
Helen Cartwright: #2, Max
Like Elise's car, these two cars are playable cars in Daytona USA Deluxe/CCE. Though, they actually have the proper numbers of course.
Hatsune Miku: #01, Greatsmirk Racing
I mentioned this one in the previous post, but for those unaware, the sponsor is a parody of Goodsmile Racing, something that Miku is commonly assosiated with. The number is a reference to to the number seen on Miku's shoulders.
Neptunia characters and paint scheme ideas (if they actually appear).
I'm still unsure if they will actually appear here, but Hyperdimension Neptunia was published by SEGA, so it's still a possibility. Regardless I'll tell you the ideas for their cars anyways.
Neptune: #91, Nep Bull Noire: #94: Lastation Racing Vert: #1, Leanbox Labs Blanc: #81, Amazoo Delivery Service (It's a FedEx-like company instead of an Amazon parody here) Uzume Tennouboshi: #7, Sleepcast Pillows Nepgear: #27, Gallop (Another car from Daytona USA Deluxe/CCE) Uni: #53, TSA Tools Rom and Ram: #3, Star BLUE and #4, Star RED
The Tracks.
The tracks are pretty straight forward, they're mostly existing tracks from Daytona USA and Virtua Racing. And while they don't really matter in this AU, I did mention before that this could work better as a fangame, so track list is as follows:
The tracks from Daytona USA and Daytona USA Deluxe. (Three Seven Speedway, Dinosaur Canyon, Seaside Sreet Galaxy, National Park Speedway, Desert City, and Silver Ocean Causeway)
The tracks from Virtua Racing. (Big Forest, Bay Bridge, and Arcropolis)
The Beginner Course from Daytona USA 2. (SEGA International Speedway)
Florida International Speedway (a parody of Daytona International Speedway)
Speedianapolis Motor Speedway (a parody of Indianapolis Motor Speedway)
Other Characters
Alright, time to introduce other miscellaneous characters.
The Mobians (Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Mighty, Ray, Shadow and Amy Rose), Madonna, and Dr. Eggman.
The crew from Sonic The Hedgehog of course, as well as a scrapped human character from the Tokyo Toy Show build. They all utilise their classic designs to fit with the overall 90s vibe the AU is going for.
Currently, Shadow is the only modern-era mobian included in this AU. He will have a custom "classic" design to fit with everyone else.
Sonic and his pals (and Shadow) usually hang out and have their own adventures outside the race track, but they also hang out near the garages and watch the cars zoom by. Sonic and Tails also often help out in the garage or within the popcorn booths as well. While Shadow goes to see Maria.
Amy Rose and Madonna work as race queens, they do race queen stuff, nuff said. (And yeah, the idea of Madonna being one of the racers is retconned now.)
Dr. Eggman isn't really an evil mad scientist here, he's more of a goofy nuisance who likes to cause trouble while still being a self-centered narcissist like in canon. To sum it up, he's JP Eggman with elements of Dick Dastardly if he were the owner of a race team instead of a driver.
Tom West and Mr. Virt McPolygon.
The race announcers who work for SEGA Sports Channel, you can probably guess what they do.
Tom West comes from Daytona USA 2 while Mr. Virt McPolygon comes from Virtua Racing.
And that's all there is to this semi-extended post about the AU. Now I'll admit, there still isn't much here, but then again, like I said in the previous post, there isn't really a "story" for the AU by any means.
Anyways, like always, you can ask me things about it, or do the designs for the race outfits and cars if your interested in doing that.

EVERY. SINGLE. MASS ATTACK. I MADE. FOR ARTFIGHT.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Videos:
Spiritrune - Anime Opening
Spiritrune - Weird Route
Yep. You counted those correctly: 30 images max in a tumblr post + 2 videos. 32 MASS ATTACKS on my FIRST YEAR.
This was genuinely a lot of fun and I hope I can do it again next year! ^^
I'll probably show off my individual attacks too for the hell of it. But for now... Every single mass attack is here.
And just for funsies... For all of these mass attacks combined, that makes 272 CHARACTERS drawn in total.
But in the context of EVERY ATTACK, we have 283 characters drawn in an entire month.
Well, not entirely entirely a month but for dates:
July 1: 3 July 4: 3 July 5: 1 July 6: 3 July 7: 4 July 8: 1 July 9: 1 July 11: 2 July 14: 2 July 16: 1 July 17: 6 July 18: 2 July 19: 3 July 20: 1 July 21: 4 July 22: 2 July 23: 1 July 29: 1 July 31: 1 Aug 2: 3
That's 20 days of art. Not an entire month.
TWENTY DAYS OF DRAWING.
And no, I'm not gonna re-tag everyone else in a post like this. I got an entire section in my tags with each piece of art individually tagged so you gotta find it there.
There's also multiple Fandom references besides the usual Sonic and MLP centric art along with the original characters, such as Undertale, Deltarune, Genshin Impact, and Dungeon Meshi (+ Bonus fangame deltatraveler and two deltarune meme entries).
So, uh... Yeah. Successful art fight this year?

IT IS SPOOKY MONTH!!! For the first day, have new Minnie reference sheets!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I didn't feel like making the images larger by explaining her lore, but for those who are new here: Minnie is my Needlemouse take. She was a meek woman when she was alive and was in a toxic friend group. At a party, one of her friends, Harper, accidentally shoots and kills her while he's drunk. The 3 "friends" decide to bury her body, tell no one anything, leave the country, and act like they never knew her. Minnie ended up haunting the Sonic fangame she worked on, taking the form of her hedgehog character. Over the years, she went insane due to loneliness and heartbreak and vowed to get revenge on her friends.

why did you start developing games?
I was a kid, I liked video games, and I wanted to make games with my Sonic fan character crossing over with all the other games I liked.
Then I discovered that fangames were a thing. I think in 2004-2005-ish, there was some Tiny Chao Garden fangame made in Game Maker 6 that had the "Made in Game Maker" banner when you launched the game.
Way later in 2010 or so I played Cave Story for the first time, and that was the game that taught me "ohh I can make my own characters with my own world with its own story" and I really wanted to recapture the magic I felt playing that. So that's how Kappa and most of my OCs came about.
