Stephen Knope-Wyatt • The Finer Things • A Parks&Rec Story
Once, there were three triplets who lived in chaotic harmony. As the years passed and they grew older, life threw its challenges at them. They adapted the best they could, but time was an inevitable force which forced them along their own paths. Stephen failed to accept the change. To cope, he lashed out, broke bridges, and ran away.
He lived on his own for two years. He cultivated new relationships, new jobs, new homes — new adventures — as a way of escaping time, living fifty lives instead of the one he was given.
In two years time, what was supposed to be his escape from permanency had to go ahead and cement itself. Stephen wasn’t nearly as willing as his newfound friends to see this nothing of a life become all he had to show for himself. He was so unwilling that he took the only other option available to him: the thirty-three hour drive to Indiana.
Coming back to Pawnee was the hardest thing for him to do. He had a lot of explaining to do and nowhere near enough strength to handle the weight, so the entire drive back served as a canvas on which his anxieties danced. There was a large chance, he figured, that he’d just be turned away at his parents’ doorstep. He thought to himself, he could stay away forever; he would save himself a lot of pain that way. Yet, as Stephen drove across every state line, his heartbeat told him to keep going, because sometimes, the hardest way forward was the only way forward. Sometimes, the finer things in life didn’t come so easily.

A/A Drabble: News ~For Lunabelle
Leslie insisted on coming over early to help April get everything ready for Ian's birthday party. He was turning six, and six was a pretty big, important number to hear him tell it. April and Andy both wanted him to have a super special birthday, but that was pretty consistent with all their kids and all their birthdays.
"I swear," April gave a little self-amused laugh, "booking Johnny Karate was the hardest part about this whole party. His manager tried to tell me he has too many kids of his own to do kid's parties anymore." She rolled her eyes and flapped a dismissive hand. "Can you believe that? How rude."
Leslie gasped at the horror of it. "I hope you gave her hell."
"Well, he's making an appearance, so I think I made an impression." From somewhere upstairs, there was an ominous thud followed by several high pitched squealing giggles. Both April and Leslie started to get up, but before they could so much as head for the stairs, Andy hollered down that everything was fine.
"Do you want me to..." Ben asked, not quite finishing the question, but gesturing toward the stairs.
April shook her head. "Andy said it's fine, it's fine."
"Would Andy even know if it wasn't fine, though," Ben asked. He wasn't trying to be demeaning or belittling. But he had known Andy for twenty years. He knew Andy wasn't always the smartest, or the most aware. He'd always kind of thought Andy was one ant shy of a picnic. He was a great guy, sure. He cared and his concern was genuine. But he was a little bit dense. Or a lot dense, in Ben's opinion.
April cut her eyes at Ben. She liked him. She really did. He'd been an excellent boss when she'd worked for him. He'd been a decent roommate, before he and Leslie realised they belonged together. April would even go so far as to say she respected him, when she didn't respect much of anyone else. Hell, one of Ian's names was Benjamin, and she wouldn't have named her second son after him in any way if she didn't respect him.
She knew he meant well when he questioned Andy's judgment. "Well, Ben," she said with a serious tone. "Whenever things haven't been fine, except for that one time when he was the one who wasn't fine, Andy's been the one to take control. He's the one who keeps the kids calm and figures out who to call to come and watch them. If he says things are fine, I'm going to trust him."
"Oooh," Leslie looked at her husband with an impish grin. "She schooled you."
There was another thud, and the very obvious sound of small feet running down the hallway upstairs. Ben threw his arms up in a gesture of surrender. Leslie looked at April and snickered. Lumbering footsteps made their way down the steps, and Andy bounded into the family room. "They're having a dance party," he announced. "The triplets are the judges."
"I'm sure they love that," Ben said and it was entirely impossible to tell if he was being serious or sarcastic.
"Hey babe," April put her hands out to call Andy over to her. He practically bounced across the floor and as he approached, April stood up and Andy sat down in the chair where she had been and she plopped down in his lap. It was an easy, fluid motion, obviously something they did often. "I'm glad you're here. I think now's as good a time as any to tell them."
Twenty years later, and they still didn't feel right if they weren't touching each other in some way.
Leslie glanced at Ben, then at April and Andy. April and Andy had always been more physical than they were. Leslie thought it was kind of sweet, even now.
"What did you want to tell us?"
"Well," April grinned. Andy laced his fingers with hers. Her other hand twirled a loose curl at the back of his neck and his free hand rubbed circles along her back. "We're pregnant again."
"Again?" Ben repeated the word. "You two do know you don't have to single-handedly repopulate the world, don't you?"
Andy's hand moved to circle April's waist and he tucked his chin to her shoulder. "We're going to have a girl this time."
April gave him a hard look. "We're hoping for a girl this time."
"Just like the last four times?" Ben said. "Look, I'm happy for you guys, but..."
"But what, Ben? You didn't think we could handle one, but we have five happy, healthy, beautiful boys. They're well behaved, if a little hyper. Andy's the best dad, and we can't all have all the kids we want in one go. We're going to keep having babies until we have a little girl."
"Babe. Wow. We are?" Andy blinked.
April turned her head and kissed him, just a quick kiss on the cheek. Honestly, she wasn't sure why she said that. If this one turned out to be another boy...well, she'd just committed to trying again. As many times as she had to, until they got a little girl. And honestly, she didn't regret it. She set her gaze on Ben, though. She was used to him being the Debbie Downer of the group, if he wasn't talking about one of his nerd games or nerd shows, he was being negative about something. Well, April had enough of it. "It'd be nice if our best friends supported us instead of complaining about it."
"I wasn't -" Ben started, and threw his hands up again.
Leslie cut him off. "Yeah, you kind of were. But I think it's wonderful. I'm a little shocked, because you swore you were done after each of the last three. But I'm really happy for you and I hope you get your daughter this time."
"I didn't mean I'm not happy for you. I just think maybe you're over doing it. People don't have six and seven kids these days. Most couples don't even have three anymore."
"Don't think, Ben," April said to him. "Just sit there and look pretty. Even if you're not as pretty as Andy. That's okay. You're still kind of pretty"
Andy tilted his chin up and nipped her earlobe. "Mmmm. Babe. you're so sexy when you get all bitchy at Ben."
"Babe, stop. You're embarrassing me." Andy knew that absolutely was not true. April didn't get embarrassed. Especially not around Leslie and Ben. "And if you keep it up, we're going to have to go hide out in the coat closet or something."
"Okay. No." Ben shook his head. "That's just wrong."
"But you know we'll do it," April grinned at him. She could have been upset by the attitude he took when she shared her news. But she knew him well enough to know that what sounded like disappointment and disapproval was actually concern. Which on one hand was sweet. He'd always cared about April and Andy and what happened to them. That was why he and Leslie were on the short list to call when they needed something. She didn't take his attitude personally. She knew he meant well, and in his own way was tying to look out for them.
"Hey Ben. Remember that time when you lived with us at Burly's old house, and we had that Halloween party, and Andy kept you in a headlock until you broke his nose?" Sometimes when Ben tried to look out for them, he ended up causing more harm than good, even when he meant well.
"Yeah," Ben said, giving her a sideways look, wondering why she was bringing that up now. "That was like 20 years and ten kids ago."
"Yeah, but Andy wasn't mad at you for it. Because friends don't get upset with each other. I know you wouldn't make the choices we made, but this is our choice. It's our kid just like Jack and Ian and Lycan and Max and Arlo are our kids. They're good kids, Ben. And they're all going to be awesome big brothers."
"Awww, Babe. You're the best." Andy's hands moved to her waist and he shifted a little under her. He looked up at Leslie and Ben. "Isn't she the best?"
"Well, almost the best," Ben reached for Leslie's hand.

I wrote a little snow day triplet drabble for you all!
Also on ao3
~~
2015
“Do you think they like it?”
“I don’t know. Wesley looks pissed off.”
“Language, Benjamin!”
“What? He does!” Ben said, looking down at Wesley. Sure enough, the 14 month old did look incredibly pissed off in his snowsuit. Clearly, the white falling snow flakes didn’t capture his attention as much as his siblings.
It started snowing heavily last night, and Leslie was adamant that she took the triplets out for their first ever snow day. Last year they were born just before Christmas and were premature. Neither Ben or Leslie wanted to risk their newborns outside in the snow, and kept them inside instead.
But now, the triplets were kind of walking and babbling excitedly at the snow. So, Leslie bundled them up in their snowsuits and took them outside in their garden. Right now, Leslie held on to Sonia and Stephen, keeping them steady as they examined the snow, and Ben held Wesley, who was not interested in getting down any time soon.
Sonia reached out and put a glove covered hand into the snow. She grimaced, and looked back up at Leslie.
“Is it cold, Sunny?” Leslie said to her daughter. Sonia just whimpered in response, trying to clear the snow off her hand.
“Ok, maybe that’s enough snow for today,” Leslie said, noticing that Sonia was maybe two minutes away from a screaming fit. “We can go back inside and drink chocolate milk instead.”
“Sounds good to me,” Ben said.
They were about to turn back to go inside when Wesley started wailing and pointing back at the snow.
“Oh,” Ben said, trying to calm Wesley. “I was wrong, he did like it.”
“Wessy, it’s ok,” Leslie said, whilst trying to keep Sonia and Stephen from wandering off. “The snow isn’t going anywhere.”
That didn’t stop Wesley from crying. Ben looked back out at the weather and sighed.
“I can stay out with him for a little longer, he seems to be enjoying himself,” Ben said, pulling Wesley’s hat a little further down.
“Alright, I’ll get some coffee going for when you get back,” Leslie said, leaning in and kissing Ben quickly, so that he could get back outside and appease Wesley.
Sure enough, as soon as they stepped back outside, Wesley stopped crying, and fell silent as he looked at the snow.
“I know,” Ben said to his son. “This is my favourite time of year too.”

“He needs a nose,” Sonia said, staring at the snowman.
“That’s fine, we have carrots in the kitchen,” Leslie said, and she quickly hurried inside to grab the carrots. She came back with three in her hands and held them out.
“Which one do you think would make a good nose?” she asked the children. Each of them gathered around and thought.
“I like that one,” Wesley said, pointing at a slightly crooked carrot. “It looks like Daddy’s nose.”
Leslie stifled a giggle as the triplets agreed and picked the crooked carrot. Stephen took it and tried to put it on the snowman’s face.
“Mommy, I can’t reach,” Stephen mumbled.
Leslie dropped the other two carrots in the snow and picked Stephen up so he could put the carrot in place. Soon, the snowman was complete and the triplets were happy with their creation.
“What are you going to call him?” Leslie asked.
“Snowy!” Sonia blurted out, and Wesley and Stephen nodded along.
“Snowy sound great,” Leslie said.
She turned when she heard a noise behind her. Ben had just returned from work and was starting dinner, he waved at his family through the window and started rooting around the kitchen.
“I think this is probably the best snowman ever,” Leslie told the triplets, who all beamed with pride.
She knew that she’d have to hold them while they cried after the snowman melted, but right now, it was all worth it.
“Honey,” she heard Ben call from the kitchen. “Where’s the carrots for dinner?”
Leslie smirked a little, and kicked snow over the two carrots on the ground.
“I have no idea.”

“How many snowballs do we have?” Stephen asked.
Wesley quickly totalled up the piles. “We have fifteen.”
“Do you think that’s enough?”
“I don’t know,” Sonia jumped in. “But I don’t want to go back other there. He might see us.”
The boys both agreed. They were all safe behind the barrier they had made of snow covered lawn chairs.
Stephen peered behind the barrier. “I can’t see him. Has he given up?”
“Do you think? Have we won?” Wesley said excitedly.
“Guess again!” Ben’s voice cried out as he towered above his children, holding a snowball in his hands.
“Attack!” Sonia screamed, and each triplet grabbed a snowball and started pelting them at Ben.
Ben yelped and tried to cover his face as his children threw all of their snowballs at him.
“Alright! I give! I surrender!” Ben cried out as one snowball hit him on the jaw.
The triplets cheered at their victory, and Ben rubbed his face, immediately regretting taking the kids to a batting cage last week.
Wesley, especially, had a pretty good aim.

2029
“Sonia! Come here quick! It’s an emergency!”
Sonia opened the door to the backyard and folded her arms. “What kind of an emergency?”
Stephen looked desperately at her. “Come here, please, it’s urgent!”
“Oh really?” Sonia said, raising an eyebrow. “It’s urgent? Is the urgency Wesley hiding under that snow pile next to you?”
Stephen groaned, and the snow pile next to him moved, and Wesley sat up from it.
“How did you know?” Wesley asked, brushing snow off his face.
“I saw you two setting up earlier. Really guys, this is a terrible prank,” Sonia said.
“But it would have worked if you didn’t see us,” Stephen said. “And it would have been hilarious.”
Just then, Sonia heard footsteps in the kitchen. “Dad’s coming. Wesley, cover yourself back up!”
Wesley immediately lay back down in the snow, and Stephen rushed to cover him. A few moments later, Ben came up behind Sonia.
“The body in the snow trick again?” Ben asked her, and she nodded.
“Please just go and pretend to be scared,” Sonia pleaded her dad, and Ben laughed.
“I have a better idea, how about we go for hot chocolate instead?” Ben suggested, and Sonia nodded.
“Sure!”
“Dad! Come here, it’s an emergency!” Stephen yelled from the garden. “I’m stuck!”
“That’s ok, Stephen,” Ben called back. “It’s going to start raining soon, that snow will ease up before you know it.”
He closed the yard door, leaving Stephen and Wesley alone in the garden, pleading to be let back inside.

Parks and Rec The Next Generation and Why Each Characters Are Friends (Future Sonia edition)
As inspired by a chat with my tumblog wife @kickassleslie
Sonia and Oliver are best friends who bond over their mutual love of math and being total nerds. In more complicated ways that I think Parks and Rec doesn’t hold up anymore, they also love hunting with Ron Swanson. But in this perfect future they are just nature nerds together. Sonia does kiss Oliver after a mathlete competition because Sonia has a crush on Oliver and both have been told most of their lives by their moms that they would make a cute couple. They go on a few dates but it doesn’t work out because Oliver is gay and Sonia is only half gay. I used to be bi I can make that joke. They are each other’s soulmates and are together in the universe where the soulmates are with each other. There they have five kids, Oliver is a stay at home dad/successful children’s book writer (they are all books about math) and Sonia becomes a lawyer – judge – Supreme Court justice. In the Soap Opera universe they are also together but it’s dramatic because Sonia’s twins were actually fathered by her lover John, who was cheating on his boyfriend Stephen, and she was also cheating on John with his twin Dawn who wears an eyepatch and Westley is lost at sea OR WAS HE PUSHED
Sonia and Leslie Perkins Traeger who I decided everyone calls LC because I decided her middle name is Christine are not immediately besties unfortunately after the families all move back to Pawnee. That is because the finale decided to have that scene where Leslie and Ann think Oliver and Sonia are going to be a future couple instead of the much cuter scene where Sonia and LC are talking and their moms say future best friends!! Which is the finale’s only flaw. Plus initially Oliver and Sonia are in the same classes until LC skips a grade and Sonia thinks LC is kind of mean because she was kind of a bully to her brother Oliver as a child. It takes a few Galentines Days for LC and Sonia to finally become friends, especially after they join rival roller derby teams and are briefly enemies, Sonia as captain of the Eagleton Eagles and LC as captain of the Pawnee Bread Factory Fires. Sonia has a crush on LC but it’s not reciprocated because LC is tragically heterosexual except in the Unexpected Pairings universe which is something I decided is a universe where someone on AO3 put Stephen and Oliver (instead of my canon Oliver and Westley) together. In that universe LC is a dancer while her wife Sonia is a congresswoman, Senator and then President. In the soap opera universe they are back to being enemies and Sonia blames LC for Westley being lost at sea OR WAS HE PUSHED
Sonia and John are the biggest jocks of the Parks and Rec TNG world, they spend a lot of time briefly trying to defeat each other at various sports, much to the disinterest of their friends. Due to their competition they are both no longer allowed at the Pawnee bowling alley. They love animals even if John can’t understand why Sonia likes eating them. They are the couple I would ship in every universe: Sonia/Dawn, Samuel Knope Wyatt/John, Samuel/Dawn, even when in the universe where Sonia is technically married to Oliver and the Soap Opera universe where twins John and Dawn exist and Dawn has an eyepatch, and is actually the reason Westley is lost at sea OR WAS HE PUSHED there’s also a normal universe where twins John and Dawn exist but Sonia and just Dawn are the couple and the triplets are constantly asking them where’s the rest to the twins. In every Sonia/Dawn or John universe Sonia follows her mom’s path to governor/POTUS after being an 19 year old mayor while John/Dawn are basketball coaches except in the soap opera one where their job is wearing an eyepatch and being mysterious

do you have any ben/leslie headcanons! i love your posts abt them so much it's great to see someone get as emotional abt them as i am asjdkajhjd
i got this message and i was like "god, i dont really know if i have any headcanons" and then i opened my notes app and started typing and didn't stop for over an hour
i'm literally putting this under a break and organizing it into categories bc it's absurdly long
here it is
A COLLECTION OF BEN AND LESLIE HEADCANONS
PRE-RELATIONSHIP/S3
basically canon but leslie definitely had a crush on a young benji wyatt and followed the story religiously for the first couple months before she started college
ben is only slightly jealous leslie had ann go out with chris to try and get more money for the parks budget rather than leslie asking him out with the same goal. he knows it’s insane, unethical, and illogical but he’s still excited that he gets to spend the night with her on a date plus two other people even if it is to accuse her of bribery.
ann realizes early on that leslie was attracted to ben and teases her mercilessly about it. she thinks it’s absolutely hilarious that leslie wants to make out with "mean ben.” after april and andy’s wedding, she realizes it's more than just attraction and she lays off.
before ben can even think rationally about what he’s doing, he’s in line at bed, bath, and beyond with a crock pot in his arms, calling stephanie to ask her to send him their family’s chicken soup recipe
ann knew ben liked her from the beginning and was totally positive when she ran into him in the hospital asking for leslie’s room number while holding jj’s waffles and a tub of homemade soup.
ben realizes he’s falling in love with leslie when he is at city hall with her until 3am one night trying to budget for the amount of cotton candy machines she wants for the harvest festival. in his exhaustion, he naively believes her when she tells him she’ll go home in a bit so he leaves. he never gets a text from saying she made it home so he stops at jj’s the next morning and brings a takeout container of waffles and a coffee complete with an outlandish amount of whipped cream and sugar to the parks department. he finds her asleep in the conference room. he starts trying to convince sweetums to donate more cotton candy machines that afternoon.
chris had to have known ben liked leslie. he’s not an idiot. in the deleted scene from their wedding, they read out emails from their “tumultuous first week in pawnee” and chris writes to ben saying, “why are you so focused on leslie knope?” ben replies saying, “i’m not. whatever. shut up.” there’s no way chris is this oblivious. ben takes her out for a beer. ben pays out of pocket for a children’s performer to help her out. ben shows up on chris and ann’s date just because he thinks leslie might be there. chris can’t be this dumb. but when they take the city manager jobs in pawnee, he knows it can’t happen so he cuts ben off when he starts to ask about dating someone in city hall. he cracks down on the rule in front of leslie after the tom incident to hammer it in. he starts setting ben up on a bunch of dates to try and head it off. he sends them to indianapolis for the little league pitch because, realistically, he knows they’re the best bet for success but makes sure to interrupt their dinner and invites them to his apartment to continue to run interference the rest of the night. after their fights in 4.06-4.08, he hopes he won’t have to worry anymore. the next work day, they come into his office looking nervous and happy and he knows he’s about to lose the partner and best friend that’s been by his side for the past decade.
april and andy knew they were secretly dating. it went unspoken aside from a few implicit teasing remarks from april and a few suggestive attempted high fives from andy but leslie assured ben they wouldn’t tell anyone despite their ostensible behavior.
BREAK UP
ben had commissioned the li’l sebastian plush for leslie after he had died but the toy shop didn’t finish it until after they broke up. he felt bad not going to pick it up so he did despite not being able to give it to her. he kept it for all those months and sometimes thought about getting rid of it but could never bring himself to do it.
when leslie made personalized copies her books for her friends with individualized annotations and notes in the bylines, she had two copies for ben. there was one that she gave him during their breakup that was very simplified and watered down where the note basically just said “i’m really glad you decided to stay in pawnee.” then there was a second copy that she kept while they were split up that was totally covered in notes and random thoughts she couldn’t say during their time apart. she gives him that copy when they get back together and it may or may not be the best gift he’s ever received.
april was much less abrasive with them during the break up because she’s a sweetheart and wants her friends to be happy.
the first time leslie admitted she was in love with him was during a long night of drinking and crying at ann’s house
ben craved the taste of sugar during their breakup because he got used to tasting the sweetness when he kissed her
ben found himself unable to sleep at night without the sound of leslie talking in her sleep to comfort him
april texted leslie the night of the halloween party to let her know that ben and andy were at the hospital after a fight and everything was fine and she didn’t need to worry. leslie was mad at andy for a few days after and he couldn’t figure out why.
the only photo in ben’s bedroom was of himself, leslie, and li’l sebastian at the harvest festival. if he got caught staring at it and crying, he would just say he missed li’l sebastian so much.
april and andy started having star wars and star trek movie nights to try and cheer ben up
DOMESTIC
ben and leslie got in the habit of having weekly game nights with april and andy during the campaign since they were all basically living together. it became a tradition that kept going as often as they could make it happen, even after the kids were born. they try to have game night at least once a month. april pretends to hate it.
one of my absolute favorite ideas about them is that she sleeps much better when he’s around to keep her grounded. after they get together for good, she starts getting closer to 5 hours of sleep a night.
another favorite involving leslie’s sleeping: ben is typically accustomed to tuning out incoherent nonsense that she babbles in her sleep but she also has some of her best ideas when she’s not busy trying to focus on a million different things. when he hears her coming up with legitimately good ideas or making speeches or having solid debate arguments, he takes out the notebook he keeps in his nightstand to record her thoughts and quotes. he revisits and revises the notes to strengthen her statements and make them more professional and less rambling but makes sure to keep her distinct voice apparent in them.
ben prefers pancakes to waffles but he will go to the grave with that secret
this isn’t a headcanon because nbc posted it but one of ben’s holidays on leslie’s calendar is watch synchronization day which is the day they celebrate syncing their watches to, as leslie puts it, “always be in harmony, like our hearts” which is just one of the sweetest fucking things in the world
leslie makes ben read and watch all the harry potters because he didn’t get into them when he first tried. ben is much more of a success than ann. she buys him a ravenclaw scarf for christmas.
their first fight as a couple was a historical debate gone awry
since ben clearly has some affinity for custom stuffed animals, he has some made for the triplets.
they’re both dog people but they adopt a cat because sonia and stephen beg for one and it does fit their busy lifestyle much better. they love the cat. they get a dog when the kids are older and life is slightly less hectic.
they both love striped shirts and sweaters so much that they have to make a conscious effort to avoid wearing them on the same day and matching
leslie makes sweets and bakes desserts while ben typically handles cooking the actual meals
BASED ON EPISODES, QUOTES, AND THROWAWAY LINES
i always loved the ann/ben dynamic in bus tour because there’s been such an obvious shift in ann’s attitude towards him in this episode. maybe it’s because she and tom just broke up and she just turned chris down again and she’s frustrated with relationships but i think it’s her realizing ben isn’t going anywhere. since the campaign is winding down, she realizes that things aren’t gonna go back to the way they were because ben is now part of this and he’s clearly in it for the long haul. ann’s definitely jealous that ben is just as important to leslie as she is and she now knows she’s never gonna get that full attention back. ann sits ben down to have a real “don’t you dare hurt her” speech after this ep and before win, lose, or draw. this is when he tells ann he wants to marry her.
they discover they both adore the princess bride after ben says “as you wish” to her one night and after that it becomes their movie.
the wildflower mural becomes a thing between them when ben says he considered that to be their first date, prompting leslie to tell him what the mural means to her.
ben puts banjo boogie bonanza on one of the mix cds he gives leslie at the beginning of their relationship
harrison ford movie nights start after they both reveal they had a crush on him as a kid. ben was obsessed with han solo and leslie was into indiana jones’ whole history teacher vibe.
they basically hate each other’s taste in music and stop exchanging mix cds once that becomes apparent that they aren’t gonna find much common ground. they both love tom petty, al green, and etta james and music in that vein though.
ben makes leslie watch game of thrones just to try to explain why he’s called her khaleesi. she gets into it, not so much because of the show itself, but because of how passionate her boyfriend is about it.
they start learning basic french during the s4 campaign because they think it will be useful to have a basic multilingual vocabulary for their political careers and because leslie confesses she has always dreamed of seeing paris. they study spanish next.
ben makes leslie watch the star wars prequels just so he can complain to her during them. he doesn’t think she’s paying attention and then he reads about midichlorians in the paper.
ann is also in on ben’s plan to sneak vegetables into leslie’s waffles.
they will sometimes jokingly refer to themselves as the “dream team” or “dynamic duo” because, despite chris’s absurdity, it’s true
i’m open to literally any origin of this because no matter what it’s perfect but i like to think that “i love you and i like you” started at some point in season 4 when, at some point, leslie went “i like you” and ben replied “you like me?” “mhm” “hm just like me?” “yes i like you. i love you and i like you. both.” “mmm i love you and i like you too”
i barely even register some of these things as headcanons since they just live so solidly in my brain
this might be my favorite ask ever thank you for loving benslie enough to ask me this and be genuinely interested
if anyone read all of this, i love you

Okay so I know you don’t fancy heterosexual ships a lot but i’m curious, what is one het ship that you genuinely like? Or more. Also what is that gets a pass from you to like a het ship? Like a certain dynamic or how the guy treats the girl. Your art is amazing and keep drawing what makes you happy!
Hi Anon! Sorry it took so long.
Luckily for both you and us, we have a list of the het ships we had over the years lol, and it’s a very small list compared to our other ships… but still, we can check it out and draw conclusions from it. Oh, and keep in mind that these are different ehh levels of ships. Some of them we love very much, but some of them were just amusing enough for us to be shippable while we were watching the show. Here it is:
Eren Yeager/Annie Leonhart (SnK)
Phoenix Wright/Dahlia Hawthorne (Ace Attorney)
Sister/Maria (Arakawa Under the Bridge)
Bolin/Eska (Legend of Korra)
Byakuya Togami/Fukawa Touko (Danganronpa)
Kazuichi Soda/Sonia Nevermind (Danganronpa)
Jane Crocker/Jake English (Homestuck)
Equius Zahhak/Aradia Megido (dead) (Homestuck)
Horuss Zahhak/Damara Megido (Homestuck)

Hmm, I suppose, roughly speaking, we tend to enjoy ships where the guy is either an idiot (who can either be clueless about girl’s feeling or can be a loyal dog) or a somewhat passive pushover who lets the girl to do whatever she wants even if he’s not happy about it. It’s not really a rule we keep in mind, it happens naturally with us. I guess that’s the dynamic that works for us in het ships.
We also love female characters that these ships offer very much. I think the fact that they are a nice way to showcase their personality and maybe give them character growth is a huge plus that makes the ship more compelling to us. Especially considering how many het ships just butcher female characters for a happily ever after.
Plus, if the ship is well-written and interesting enough, we usually don’t care whether it’s het or not. That being said, there are some ships that we would’ve enjoyed more if they weren’t het, maybe that makes us hypocrites haha.
Thanks for the interesting ask and thank you very much for enjoying our content!! <3
Have a great day.

while the triplets are growing up, when Ben and Leslie don’t want them to know what they’re talking about, they speak French to each other.
this becomes a problem with Sonia decides to take French for her language class.

A/A: A Love Like Ours (8/?) Future Fic ~For Lunabelle
"Here you go, bubby," Andy held the bottle out to Max. The toddler took it from him and promptly threw it to the floor. Andy bent down to retrieve it and held it out to him again. Max took it and launched it at Andy's head. "Damn it, Max!" Andy groaned. Max let out a frustrated toddler scream that made everyone flinch and cover their ears.
"Daddy?" Jack's voice sounded so small, so uncertain.
Andy looked at Jack, his green eyes bright with emotion. "Don't start with me, Jack." Andy threw his cell phone at the wall. It clattered to the floor and with it, Andy's shoulders slumped.
Jack looked back at him for only a moment. Just long enough for Andy to see the dark shadow of pain and betrayal in his features. Where any other kid might have yelled 'I hate you' or something just as damning, Jack said nothing. He turned away, and ran from the room, stomping all the way up the stairs.
Ian stopped what he was doing, holding very still. Lycan grabbed the toy Jack had been playing with and giggled. Ian's focus shifted to Lycan and the two resumed playing together like they didn't have a care in the world. Max babbled nonsense and banged on the toy xylophone in front of him.
Andy dropped onto the couch and ran a trembling hand through his hair. His fingers dragged down the curve of his skull and followed through along his jawline. If he could have taken back the last minute or so, he would have done so in a heart beat. But he couldn't. And his cell phone laying on the floor seemed to mock him, reminding him that he'd thrown it in a fit of rage. He hadn't thrown it at Jack, hadn't thrown it anywhere near Jack, but that wasn't the point.
He'd thrown it because he was frustrated. Because he couldn't answer Jack's questions about when Mommy and baby Arlo would come home. He sighed and lurched forward to retrieve his phone. he knew it would serve him right if the screen was cracked and the phone was unusable. He was almost afraid to look at it.
He drew a deep breath and looked. There was a small crack at the top of the screen, but it seemed fine otherwise. He took a moment to be grateful for that, then cued up Leslie's number and called her. "Andy? Is everything all right?" Leslie answered on the second ring, her voice frantic and worried.
"No. I mean yes. But no. I yelled at Jack." He'd yelled at Max first, but it was more significant that he'd yelled at Jack. Andy couldn't have said when he'd raised his voice to any of his kids. He wasn't that kind of parent.
"Oh, Andy." Leslie sighed. "Do you want me to come over and get him? I can take him to the hospital to see April."
"I knew you'd know what to do." Leslie was the smartest person Andy knew, besides April of course. And Ron. Ron was pretty smart.
"Give me half an hour."
Andy nodded even though Leslie couldn't see him through the phone. He hung up and slid the phone into his pocket. He moved to pick up the bottle Max had thrown, but Ian realised he was going for it and picked it up to hand it to him. "Thanks, big guy."
"Mommy always holds him," Ian said. "That way he don't throw the bottle."
Andy pawed at his face. He glanced at the steps, and felt like he should go up and check on Jack. But he couldn't leave the other boys alone. April stressed that to him all the time. Ian would probably be all right, but Lycan and Arlo were too little to be left unattended. He sighed and put his hands out to Max, and the little one toddled over to him and lifted his arms for Andy to pick him up.
Max was asleep in Andy's arms by the time Leslie arrived. Sonia and one of the boys followed behind her. Andy was never sure which one was which. "I brought reinforcements," Leslie said. "Ben and Westley will bring pizza in a bit," she added. Sonia and Stephen had already moved in toward Ian and Lycan, and the moment Sinia sat down, Lycan crawled into her lap.
Leslie nodded at Andy. He set the bottle on the table and stood, carefully cradling Max against his chest. He gave Leslie a grateful nod then headed upstairs to put Max down for his afternoon nap. After putting the baby down, Andy crept out of the room and over to Jack's closed door. He knocked once. "Jackie?"
Jack didn't answer. Andy knocked again, and when his son still didn't respond, he pushed the door open. Jack was face down on his bed, fingers stuck in his ears, and didn't react to Andy coming into the room. Andy sat on the bed and put a hand out to Jack's shoulders. "Jack. I'm sorry."
Aside from a slight tremor that Andy felt through his hand on Jack's back, Jack didn't acknowledge him. Andy sighed. "I know I shouldn't have yelled at Maxie, or at you, and I'm sorry." There really wasn't an excuse for it. Andy was a stay at home dad, and he loved it. He loved being home with his kids all day. He was really just a big kid himself, but he'd had to grow up fast with April and Arlo in hospital. "I guess I got frustrated and I forgot how to handle it. Do you think you can forgive me?"
Jack shifted, turning over on his side so he was facing Andy. "I don't like when you get angry."
Andy smoothed a hand over Jack's dark hair. "I wasn't angry, Jack. I'm just worried about your mom and your little brother and sometimes that comes out like anger. But I'm not angry. I don't even know how to get angry, right? Isn't that what your mom says all the time?"
Jack pushed himself to sitting up and wrapped his little arms around Andy's neck. Andy's arms circled around Jack, holding him close. "Aunt Leslie is here, and she wants to take you to see your mom. Just you. I'm gonna stay here with your brothers."
"Just me?"
"Just you," Andy confirmed. "I thought you'd like that and I know your mama will be happy to see you."
"But what about Maxie?" Jack asked, his brow furrowed. Andy loved that Jack worried about his brothers so much. He was like another parent to them at times. Sometimes, Jack was more of a parent to them than Andy was.
Andy pressed his forehead to Jack's. "I'll bring Maxie and Ian and Lycan later."
Jack moved out of the circle of Andy's arms and slipped behind him, pressed against his back with his arms clasped around Andy's neck. "Will you carry me piggyback?"
"You better hang on tight!" Andy lurched to his feet. He moved toward the door and stumbled into it deliberately so that he bounced back and made it more fun for Jack. He was a little more cautious on the stairs, especially since April had fallen just a few days ago, but once they were downstairs, Andy zig zagged like he was out of control until he reached the couch, and carefully dropped and fell back with Jack giggling wildly.
Lycan crawled off Sonia's lap and threw himself at Andy's legs. "Do me, Daddy! Piggy me!" The little guy climbed up on the couch and hooked his arms around Andy's neck. Andy bent one arm behind himself to give Lycan a little extra support as he stood up, then gripped both his ankles before he started to run around the house with Lycan bouncing on his back.
Leslie cringed as she watched him, but she knew Andy did this kind of thing all the time. He'd done the same with Sonia, Stephen, and Westley when they were little. it had terrified her then, and it terrified her now but she trusted him to be careful. Even if it looked like he was clumsy and stumbling, she had to believe he had it under control. April would be devastated if Andy or one of the boys was hurt now, or ever really, but especially now.
"So, Jack," she said, turning her focus to the little boy. "Do you want to go and see your mama?"
Jack nodded. "Daddy said just me." He said with an air of pride.
"That's right." Leslie got to her feet and held her hand out to Jack. She almost wanted to wait till Ben and Westley arrived with the pizza, but that could be another hour or so. She just had to trust that Andy could manage, and that Sonia and Stephen could handle the damage control. That was a lot to put on a couple of teenagers, but they'd known Andy since the day they were born, and they knew how he could be.
Jack took Leslie's hand and they headed for the door just as Andy crashed into the wall at the bottom of the steps and staggered around to sit on the steps, giving Lycan an easy way off his back. The little boy was giggling with the unrestrained glee only a child could possess.
Leslie looked back at Andy. "I'll get him dinner, so you don't have to worry about that," she said. Andy raised his hand in a salute as Leslie lead Jack out the front door.

I started writing this on Saturday when I had food poisoning, and managed to finish it today. Enjoy a cute triplet fic.
Also on ao3.
~~~
“Alright monsters, come here I want to talk to you,” Leslie said, beckoning all three of her children towards her.
Sonia, Wesley and Stephen all barrelled towards their mother. Wesley instantly begged to climb up on her lap.
“Daddy’s not feeling so good today. He’s upstairs sleeping, so I’m going to need you all to be on your best behaviour. You can play quietly downstairs but you can’t go upstairs, ok?” Leslie said to the triplets.
“Daddy’s sick?” Stephen asked, titling his head to the left.
“Yeah, it’s only a cold, baby. Don’t worry. He just needs some sleep, and I’m going to make chicken noodle soup for dinner so that’ll help him feel better too,” Leslie said, ruffling Stephen’s hair.
Ben woke up that morning coughing and spluttering into his pillow, and all he wanted to do was just stay in bed, feeling sorry for himself. Leaving Leslie to try and keep her three five year olds occupied all day.
“Hey, how about this? Shall we go to the park? We can have a great time all day, and then when we get back you can all help me cook dinner for Daddy? How does that sound?”
Leslie got three excited nods in return. “Great! Ok, well let’s get our shoes and coats on and we’ll go.”
~~
Ben was lying under the duvet with his eyes closed, trying to beg his nose to unclog itself. He hated feeling sick full stop, but on the weekends was the worst. He loved sleeping in on the weekends, but there was a point where he wanted to get up and spend time with his family too.
“Daddy?”
Ben jolted at the sound. He looked to the side and saw Stephen standing by his bedside.
“Mommy said you were sick. So I bought you some tissues so you can blow your nose,” Stephen said, producing a long piece of toilet paper from behind his back.
Ben frowned a little, but still took the offering. “Thanks, buddy. This means a lot.”
Stephen hitched himself up so he was level with Ben’s face. “Mommy said not to tell you, but we’re making chicken soup for you later. It’s so you can feel better.”
Ben grinned and ruffled the boy’s hair. “That sounds great, I’m looking forward to it. Now, go and have fun at the park.”
Stephen smiled at his dad and climbed back off the bed, leaving Ben in peace again. He rolled back over into the pillows and coughed into the covers. With a sigh, he closed his eyes, hoping that he could drift off into an effortless sleep.
“Daddy?”
Ben groaned a little, but still opened his eyes again. This time it was Sonia at his bedside, clutching her stuffed rabbit in her arms.
“Hey Sonny,” Ben mumbled, and Sonia placed the rabbit next to Ben’s face.
“I want you to have Whiskers. He always makes me feel better. He has magical powers,” Sonia said happily.
Ben tugged the stuffed rabbit closer to him, making a mental note to put it in the wash so that Sonia wouldn’t catch his germs. “Thanks, honey. I’m sure he’ll help a lot.”
No, he wasn’t sure that this stuffed rabbit would help him get better at all. But it would help him feel a little less lonely.
Sonia placed her hands on the bed and stood up on tip-toes, she leaned in as far as she could and placed a wet kiss on Ben’s nose.
“I love you, Daddy.”
“I love you too Sonny-bug,” Ben said, and Sonia scurried back out of the room.
Ben had tissues and a stuffed rabbit, sure that was it now and he’d be able to go to sleep with ease.
“Daddy?”
Good lord, will this never end?
Ben groaned and turned over again to see Wesley standing at his bedside. He didn’t bring any presents like his siblings, in fact, he looked like he was about to cry.
“Wesley, are you ok?” Ben asked nasally, and Wesley sniffed.
“Are you going to die?”
Ben spluttered in surprise. “What? No, of course not. I’ve just got a cold. They happen all the time. I’m not going to die, I just need sleep and medicine, promise.”
Wesley didn’t look convinced. He clambered up and snuggled next to Ben. He was about to object that he didn’t want Wesley to get sick, but his little boy seemed so upset, he couldn’t send him away.
“I don’t want you to die,” Wesley whimpered.
Where on earth was he getting this from? Ben wrapped his arm around Wesley and kissed the top of his head. “I’m not going anywhere, Buddy.”
“There you are,” Leslie said as she walked into the room. “I thought I said Daddy needed sleep and that upstairs was off limits.”
Ben quickly gestured to Leslie that Wesley was upset, and she stopped. Carefully, she sat on the edge of the bed and rubbed Wesley’s back.
“What’s going on? What’s got you upset?” Leslie asked.
“I don’t want to go to the park, I want to stay with Daddy,” Wesley insisted, burying his face closer into Ben’s shoulder.
“He thinks I’m going to die,” Ben mouthed to Leslie, who looked horrified.
“Baby, Daddy needs to rest. I think it would be best if you went to the park with us,” Leslie said sweetly to her youngest, but he just shook his head and cuddled closer to Ben.
“I don’t mind if he stays with me,” Ben said.
“Are you sure?” Leslie asked. “But you’re not feeling good.”
“I know, but I’m not going to make him go if he doesn’t want to,” Ben said. He then nudged Wesley.
“You can stay here if you want. But I’m not going to be able to play with you. If you stay here, we sleep, ok?”
Wesley sat up at that, and looked back from Leslie to Ben.
“What do you say, Wes?” Leslie asked. “Would you like to stay here and nap with Daddy, or do you want to come to the park with us and get ice cream?”
Wesley gave Ben one last look, and jumped off the bed. “I don’t want to sleep, I want ice cream.”
Leslie and Ben exchanged glances. Wesley was their youngest and most sensitive, but when it came to sleep, he was just like Leslie and refused.
“Alright, go downstairs and put your shoes on, I’ll be there in a minute,” Leslie said, and Wesley shot out of the room.
“Parenting,” Ben sniggered, holding up his palm for Leslie to slap.
“We’ve got these suckers down,” Leslie agreed. She then got up and re-tucked Ben in.
“We won’t be long. Do you want anything before we go?” she asked, pushing back Ben’s floppy hair and feeling his forehead.
“No, I’m good,” Ben said, relishing in his wife’s touch. “But I could do with some ice cream later?”
Leslie cackled and rested her forehead against Ben’s. “Ice cream’s only for the healthy members of this household.”
She leaned in, kissing Ben softly, and he hummed in response.
“Hmmm, you’re strict,” he mumbled, eyes growing heavy.
He didn’t hear Leslie’s reply as he finally drifted off into a deep, well earned, sleep.
Here are some John Swanson headcanons
This is someone whose parents are Diane Lewis, educator and warrior princess and Ron Freaking Swanson. We know John learned about power tools at a very early age and spent most of his childhood in a cabin in the woods. And since the show decided to stop talking about him, I assume Ron made the same decision I assume Leslie/Ben made after the triplets were born to not show them for their own privacy only Ron/Diane are more into privacy than Leslie/Ben eventually are (you know full well the triplets are in a campaign ad or two).
Diane teaches all of their kids how to play the piano, and since John really doesn’t have friends except for his sisters, he gets really good at the piano. He and Stephen start writing music together in high school. John, like I’m going to say Diane and also Ann Perkins, acts in musicals. Ann Perkins was a high school musicals star and viola more personality than the show ever gave her. Ron sees all of John’s shows even though he doesn’t like when any of the kids are showoff-y, he supports them. John is always the male lead. Ron is so proud.
John’s best friend is Stephen Knope Wyatt, they officially became best friends the moment Stephen saw him at a Parks and Rec employee party they went to with their parents when they were five, but reunited when the Knope-Wyatts moved back to Pawnee for good.
While Stephen is the only heterosexual of the triplets/their three friends, he says he is more in love with John than any of his siblings are with any of their future romantic partners. After John and Stephen play a couple in a musical, they decide to kiss because everyone assumes they’re dating already and they are soulmates. The kiss proves to both of them that they are just friends although John would date a blond version of Stephen, who really liked math.  John does not put together that this means he’s into Sonia or any version of Sonia for two years.
He is a vegan and his middle name is Leslie.
Thanksgiving 2020
“I am thankful for our President elect, who is also my best friend, Kirsten,” Leslie said, raising her glass at the table. The others followed suit, including the triplets and their friends at the kids table with their cups of juice.
“I am thankful this cranberry dip,” Ben said, talking another bite from his plate. He turned to the woman who brought the dip to the Knope Wyatts. “Gayle, how do you do it? Also, why are you...ow.” Ben looked to his left at Leslie, who had kicked him underneath the table. “It’s good. Good stuff.”
“I’m thankful for Harry Potter and dinosaurs,” Westley said, filling in the silence.
“I’m thankful for mommy and unicorns,” Sonia said, with a mouthful of turkey. Stephen stood up and coughed, so he could get more of the adults attentions.
“I’m thankful the car didn’t catch fire.” Stephen sat down and added “and for cookies.”
“The what?” Ben asked.
