You know that episode in The Big Bang Theory in which Bernadette and Raj do a parody of an Indian dance number? The lyrics do sound ridiculous . . . in English. That's the thing. I don't know why, but Indian song lyrics that sound absolutely bizarre when translated to English, sound perfectly normal, nay beautiful, in the original Indian versions of the songs. I guess Indian languages just carry the hyperboles and metaphors with a certain elegance.
P. S. When I say Indian languages, I don't necessarily mean that they are spoken only by Indians or by people of Indian origin.

Obey Me Song Inspiration
Warning: just my music choices. Most are not in English. The song choices are because of how utterly romantic they are.
Satan
Not really a love song but I love it
I absolutely adore this song. It's beautiful. Watch this movie. Premam in Malayalam.
He's talking about how beautiful he thinks his love interest is. No matter if she's carrying sticks on her head or planting rice in the field.
The legendary romance. Iconic Bollywood movie. Satan is such a hopeless romantic.

Language Goals 2023
In the spirit of last year’s very reasonable and achievable goals, here are more reasonable and achievable goals for 2023!
Catalan - I’d like to get the C2 this coming year. I’d also like to read more; specifically Ausiàs March and Vicent Andrés Estellés, and possibly El Canigó and/or El comte Arnau. And if I can, I’d like to write one creative piece in Catalan that I can feel proud of!
Welsh - I’d like to listen to more of Pigion, watch more Hansh videos, and also to find more spaces to use the language in. I really want Welsh to start feeling like a language that I can do things in, because I’m at a level where I can.
Basque - I want to watch at least one or two things in Basque, and, the same as Welsh, for it to be a language that I can use for things, not just a language I’m learning.
Malayalam - I would like to get to a really basic home heritage speaker level of Malayalam by the end of the year—understanding conversations when I visit family, and being able to answer when spoken to. My goal is to watch one Elikutty video per week, and to try to integrate the language into my thoughts and routine more.
Spanish, Galician, Aragonese, Asturian - I’d like to brush up on Spanish for academic purposes, and also to learn a bit about the grammar of the other three. I’d like to start remembering to actually watch A escampar la boira, and to start listening to more music in Aragonese and Asturian. As for Galician, I’d like to go into breaking down lyrics for the many songs I already listen to in it, and maybe watch more videos in it as well. In general, I’m aiming to go into the sphere of Iberian studies, especially Iberian minoritized languages, and so I want to be more familiar with the larger panorama.
Irish, Scottish Gaelic, Cornish, Manx, Breton - Same as for the others above, I want to have somewhat of a functional understanding of more Celtic languages so that I can interact with speakers and media production without needing a translation. I also just listen to a lot of music in at least Irish, and it drives me crazy not to be able to at least superficially understand it. I think the Celtic cultural sphere is really interesting, and so I’d like to be able to learn more about it and talk to more people within it without needing to make them translate to English.
Russian - I really want to be able to understand what people are saying at my friend’s house, and I think that if I put in enough Russian listening practice and vocabulary study I’d be able to piece it together, at least partially; I can already figure it out sometimes with just a few words and context. So I’d like to actually put in some time on that, in the hopes that maybe afterwards, if I spend a few days at her house, I’ll come out understanding Russian sdfhksdhf
Amharic - I’d like to be able to speak some basic Amharic, so my goal is to learn a few basic sentence patterns and some vocabulary, and maybe be able to say one or two things by the end of the year. Nothing big, but just a bit.
I have no idea if I’ll even get close with any of these languages to the goals that I’ve set out here, but I think that if I do, it’ll pay off! And if I don’t, then at minimum, my goal is to learn one thing for each that I can feel good about in a year’s time, and I hope that at least I can do that.

For the ask game, ☾, ♧, ☮?
☾ : My favourite word from my mother tongue is "അഴക്" (english transliteration: Azhaku). It's meaning is 'beautiful'. For some reason, I have always been very fond of this word since I came across it in a song, the almost lyrical sound of it. To translate it as beautiful seems almost unfair to the contexts it is used in - 'ethereal', might be a closer fit.
♧ : My favourite word in english is 'defiant'. The closest translation I believe is 'ധിക്കാരി'. However, in my opinion, the word itself is closer in meaning to 'Insubordinate' than 'defiant'.
☮ : My favourite song in malayalam is 'എന്റെ കണ്ണിൽ നിനക്കായ്' (Ente Kannil Ninakkayi). The first lines are:
'എന്റെ കണ്ണിൽ നിനക്കായൊരുക്കിയ സ്വപ്‌നങ്ങൾ കാണേണ്ട നീ ഒന്നും കേൾക്കേണ്ട നീ'
The translation goes like this: 'The dreams I have seen and hoped for you, You don't have to see them too, you don't have to hear any of it,'
Thanks for the ask!! I had lots of fun!

Because I am nothing if not an insufferable little numbers guy, and also I hadn’t yet posted my October review of my yearly “songs I repeated too much or that got stuck in my head for a week straight” playlist, I thought it might be interesting to compare the numbers between that and my Wrapped. The personal playlist usually includes things that are more salient to me or that I actively listen to, and the Spotify Wrapped one includes things from playlists that I might have listened to over and over but the specific songs didn’t stick out. On the other hand, Spotify Wrapped’s version is weighted towards the songs that I listened to more, whereas the other one could include songs that I liked for a week and then forgot to ever listen to again. In light of that, I think it’s very notable how much more music in Welsh I listened to this year. Part of that was thanks to making some playlists for friends (as was the Basque) but also there really were just a whole bunch of songs that I had on repeat, and that makes me really happy! I feel like I enjoy learning languages a lot more when I like listening to music in them, especially when I start understanding the lyrics, which I’m really starting to for Welsh and Basque. Anyways, this year I hopefully discover lots more good music, and hopefully start to get into more stuff in Amharic, Malayalam, and other of the languages I want to improve at as well.

What is music to you?
I believe music is something which can highly influence the thoughts of people, instantly. A happy person can literally get into a mood of a sad lover in the duration of 3 minute.
Firstly I'd love to know what music do y'all listen to. Is there any song that I should try? I love exploring new music, recently while my exam prep I started listening to French music. I mean yes, before clicking the play button of that playlist I was hesitating a lot thinking whether this is gonna suit my taste or not but that experience turned out to be superb. I legit had to make a personalised playlist for myself with my favourite French songs.
Look when it comes to music, it's all about exploring new tracks and genres. I grew up in a household where I've been listening to Hindi, English, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Marathi songs since childhood so language was never a barrier for me and growing up I also discovered Spanish, Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Thai and Filipino songs. Now after French music I tried Turkish songs and yeah I liked a couple of them.
The point is, if you wanna discover new music, let go of the language barriers, only then will you be exposed to a ton of artists and their art. Yes, in the beginning you'll need some time to adjust with the language even if you like the melody and beats of a song but trust me, it all just grows onto you gradually.
Have you ever stanned any artist?
I am not talking about liking their music and fangirling over them. I am talking about loving the music pieces they put out, and their songs touching your heart and soul, and bringing you great joy.
For me, it's BTS.
Okay I know I'm gonna get judged for this but I truly don't mind it. It's been nearly two years since I left their fandom though, their new music is not my cup of tea. BTS is the first artist whom I have genuinely loved and followed them so much. Their music, again, is not liked by everyone. Sometimes it's because of the language barrier and sometimes it's solely because of them being too shiny and what some people call them, 'gays' or 'too feminine'.
Anyway, so why BTS? Why is every girl fangirling over these 7 guys. I don't know about every girl but I'll speak for myself. I think BTS is much more than just 7 Korean guys singing pop songs. The diversity in their music, lyrics and their personalities is what matters to me. By the way, I'm talking about the BTS before 2020. Yes, I accept that I was a toxic fangirl once upon a time but later when I actually got to know what power their music holds, I was blown away. Day before yesterday, I was revisted them by reading the lyrics of their songs while simultaneously listening to their music and damn my mind was blown. How could someone even write such lyrics, and also the concepts they've been using since their debut days is something so damn good. The storylines in their music videos are all interconnected... I mean what is it, Marvel?... They've worked on creating a BTS universe with such unique method of storytelling... Yeah I know there are better, much better artists than BTS and I don't stand by them now as a fan, I don’t follow them on social media either and I've also lessened listening to their music, it's just once in a month or so but what I'll always stand by is the fact that BTS paved the way. They set the standard and they are the effing standard.
This was purely a BTS appreciation post.
Have a good day.

*The Wait is Over: 'Dhadkano Main' Song Drops Today!*
*Excitement Peaks as 'Dhadkano Main' Song is Now Available!*
*Anticipation Ends: 'Dhadkano Main' Song Hits the Airwaves!*
The much-anticipated first song from the pan-India film 'Martin' is here, and it's nothing short of a visual and auditory delight! Titled "Dhadkano Main" in hindi, "Jeevan Neeye" in Tamil, "Jeeva Neene" in Kannada, "Adhanthaele" in Telugu, and "Varam Polar" in Malayalam, this stunning love track is set to sweep audiences off their feet.
Dhruva Sarja and Vaibhavi Shandilya bring "Dhadkano Main" to life with their electrifying chemistry. Their on-screen partnership is mesmerizing, seamlessly blending to create a captivating and unforgettable performance. Every moment of their interaction adds a magical touch, making the song pure perfection.
Filmed across some of India's most breathtaking locations—Agra, Jodhpur, Kashmir, and Badami—the song is a feast for the eyes, with cinematography by Sathya Hegde. Complementing the visuals is the dynamic choreography by Imran Sardhariya, which beautifully captures the essence of love in this track.
Crafted by the legendary music composer Mani Sharma, the song boasts a rich and unique composition that resonates in all five languages. The lyrics have been penned by some of the most renowned lyricists: AP Arjun in Kannada, Munavvar Sadat in Hindi, Viveka in Tamil, Ram Jogayya Shastri in Telugu, and Vinayaka Shashi Kumar in Malayalam, each bringing their own poetic flair to the track.
Adding to the song's charm is the incredible lineup of vocal talent. The Kannada version features the melodious voices of Sonu Nigam and Harika Narayan. In Hindi, Javed Ali and Palak Muchhal bring their magic to the track, while the Telugu version is graced by Shrikrishna and Shrutika Samudrala. Haricharan and Shrutika lend their voices to the Tamil and Malayalam renditions, making this song a truly pan-Indian experience.
'Martin,' starring Dhruva Sarja, is not just a film—it's an event. As the biggest action venture to emerge from Kannada cinema, this ambitious project is set to release in 13 languages, marking a new chapter in Indian cinema.
“Martin” is produced by Vasavi Enterprises and Uday K Mehta Production. Directed by AP Arjun, the story and screenplay has been penned by Arjun Sarja. With cinematography by Satya Hedge, the music of the film has been composed by Mani Sharma with a thrilling background score by Ravi Basrur of KGF fame. The film will be released in theaters on 11th October 2024 in Kannada, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Bengali, and other international languages.
