Lyrics that Lift and Lull: How Songs Shape Our Emotional Landscape
Music is not just an art form; it's a companion through life’s highs and lows. In this blog, we'll explore how the poetic nature of song lyrics can magnify these experiences, providing both a catalyst for energy and a source of comfort.
Music is not just an art form; it's a vital companion through life’s highs and lows. In this series, we'll delve into how the poetic nature of song lyrics can dramatically magnify these experiences, serving both as a catalyst for energy and as a source of profound comfort.
The Power to Motivate
Songs do more than entertain; they motivate us, shaping our mindset and propelling us forward. Consider the iconic track "Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor. This song isn’t just about rhythm and melody; it’s a powerful narrative of resilience and determination. The lyrics "Face to face, out in the heat / Hangin' tough, stayin' hungry" utilize vivid imagery and repetition to instill a sense of endurance and persistence. How does this song make you feel? Does it pump you up for a challenge?
A Comfort in Sadness
Music also acts as a balm during our more vulnerable times. Take "Fix You" by Coldplay, for example. The song's lyrics, "When you try your best but you don't succeed / When you get what you want but not what you need," speak directly to the soul with their raw honesty and simplicity. By using gentle metaphors and a slowly building melody, it offers solace and understanding to those in pain. Think about a time when a song comforted you—what was the song, and what was happening in your life?
Nostalgia and Memories
Lyrics can trigger a vivid flashback to specific moments, almost like a time machine. "Summer of '69" by Bryan Adams is a perfect example. It's not just about a time period; it's a celebration of youthful enthusiasm and nostalgia, with references that evoke intense personal memories for many listeners. "Got my first real six-string / Bought it at the five-and-dime," sings Adams, conjuring images of youthful summers and first adventures in music. What are some of your nostalgic songs and the memories they bring?
Lyrics do more than accompany melodies; they shape our emotional landscapes and anchor deep-seated memories. They lift us, soothe us, and take us back in time, proving that music is indeed a powerful life companion.
I’d love to hear about the songs that have shaped your emotional world. Which lyrics resonate with you the most? Do you have a go-to song that motivates you, comforts you, or brings back a flood of memories? Share your stories in the comments below, and let’s discuss how music helps us navigate life's complex emotions.

How to Identify Chord Progressions in Any Song: A Step-by-Step Guide for Musicians
One of the most crucial aspects of learning and understanding music is being able to identify the chord progressions that form the backbone of a song. Chord progressions give a song its structure, evoke emotion, and serve as a foundation for melody and harmony. Whether you’re a beginner musician, songwriter, or simply trying to figure out how to play your favorite song, being able to identify chord progressions is a powerful skill that can elevate your musical abilities.
In this guide, we’ll walk through the step-by-step process of how to identify chord progressions in any song, helping you unlock the structure behind the music.
What is a Chord Progression?
A chord progression is simply a series of chords played in a specific sequence. These chords work together to establish the harmony of a song. Different genres often use distinct progressions, but the principles of how to identify them remain the same.
---
Step 1: **Familiarize Yourself with Common Chords and Their Sounds**
Before you can start identifying chords in a song, you need to develop an ear for recognizing them. A good place to begin is by familiarizing yourself with the most common chords used in popular music.
Major and Minor Chords:
- **Major chords** sound bright and happy. Example: C major (C-E-G).
- **Minor chords** sound more melancholic or somber. Example: A minor (A-C-E).
Practice playing and listening to basic major and minor chords on your instrument, whether it's piano, guitar, or another instrument. Pay attention to how each type of chord feels emotionally.
---
Step 2: **Learn the Key of the Song**
Most songs are built around a specific key, which provides the framework for which chords will appear. The key determines the tonal center and tells you which chords are most likely used in the song.
To identify the key of a song:
- Listen to the **first and last chord** of the song—this is often the tonic (home) chord, which can help you determine the key.
- Use online resources, apps, or sheet music to find the key if you’re struggling to hear it.
Understanding the key will narrow down your chord choices to a set of seven diatonic chords that naturally belong to that key. For example, in the key of C major, the common chords are:
- C major
- D minor
- E minor
- F major
- G major
- A minor
- B diminished
---
Step 3: **Listen for the Bass Line**
The bass line often follows the root notes of the chords, making it an excellent clue for identifying progressions. When listening to a song, focus on the lowest notes being played, especially by the bass guitar, left hand of the piano, or lower tones in the production.
Tips for Identifying the Bass Line:
- Use headphones to better isolate and hear the bass.
- Hum or play the bass notes you hear. These root notes will help guide you to the chords in the progression.
---
Step 4: **Identify the Chord Qualities (Major, Minor, Diminished)**
Once you've established the root notes, the next step is to determine the quality of each chord—whether it’s major, minor, diminished, or another type.
How to Identify Chord Qualities by Ear:
- **Major chords** generally sound bright and strong.
- **Minor chords** have a darker, more emotional sound.
- **Diminished chords** sound tense and unresolved.
If you’re unsure, try experimenting on your instrument by playing different chord types over the bass note to match what you hear.
---
Step 5: **Use the Circle of Fifths to Find Likely Chord Progressions**
The Circle of Fifths is a helpful tool to understand the relationships between different chords in a key. It can guide you toward the most common chord progressions. In most popular songs, the chord progressions will involve these primary chords:
- **Tonic (I)**: The home chord, often the first and last chord.
- **Subdominant (IV)**: A stable chord that provides a transition.
- **Dominant (V)**: Creates tension and resolves back to the tonic.
For example, in the key of C major:
- **C major (I)** - **F major (IV)** - **G major (V)** is a very common progression.
Using the Circle of Fifths, you can also explore other typical progressions like:
- **I-IV-V-I**
- **I-V-vi-IV** (used in many pop songs)
- **ii-V-I** (common in jazz)
---
Step 6: **Use Music Theory Knowledge to Analyze the Progression**
Once you’ve identified the basic chords, it’s helpful to label them according to their function in the key (I, IV, V, vi, etc.). Understanding where these chords fall in the scale helps you see patterns and tendencies, making future identification easier.
For example, if you hear the progression:
- C major (I)
- A minor (vi)
- F major (IV)
- G major (V)
You know you’re working with a I-vi-IV-V progression, which is extremely common in pop music.
---
Step 7: **Test Your Progression on an Instrument**
Now that you’ve identified the chords by ear, test your progression on an instrument. If the chords sound correct when played along with the song, you’ve successfully identified the chord progression!
If something doesn’t sound quite right:
- Check if you’re using the correct major or minor version of the chord.
- Adjust the root notes or the quality of the chords until it matches the original song.
---
Step 8: **Utilize Technology for Help**
If you’re still having difficulty identifying chord progressions by ear, don’t worry! There are many tools available to help you:
- **Chord Recognition Apps**: Tools like Chordify or Ultimate Guitar can automatically detect the chords in many popular songs.
- **DAW (Digital Audio Workstation)**: Load the song into a DAW, and use plugins that analyze the harmony or isolate the bassline.
- **Slow Down the Track**: Use software to slow down the song, which can make it easier to hear individual notes and chords.
---
Step 9: **Practice with Different Songs**
The best way to improve your ability to identify chord progressions is through practice. Try listening to a variety of songs from different genres and work through the steps to identify their progressions.
Start with simple, well-known progressions, and gradually move on to more complex or unconventional ones. Over time, you’ll develop a keen ear for chord changes and patterns, and recognizing progressions will become second nature.
---
Conclusion
Identifying chord progressions in a song is a skill that will greatly enhance your musicianship, whether you're playing by ear, songwriting, or learning covers. By practicing these steps and developing your ear, you’ll be able to uncover the harmonic structure of any song, giving you a deeper understanding of how music works.
So grab your instrument, pick your favorite song, and start identifying those chords—it’s a fun and rewarding process that will take your musical abilities to the next level!

Song analysis #4 Superorganism
Ok Tw, there's a picture in here that implies someone hung themselves\committed suicided , if you are not comfortable with that don't read past the cut.
Song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WaNeho5kRfk
all characters mentioned belong to @brightgoat
“When I grow up, I wanna be A superorganism, come on give it to me”
Alright this line basically, in my humble interpretation, is referencing the point in Brightgoat’s story were Brighttail starts changing. They go from being the optimistic protagonist to becoming more closed off from their friends and, I’d say in general, more hardened. Being the protagonist isn't all fun and games after all, this cats been put through some heavy shit. this line also refers to Brighttails borderline God complex type of behaver.
if you don't remember let me draw your attention to (https://brightgoat.tumblr.com/post/185945534080/for-your-story-that-has-brighttail-what-do-you). From that post you can see Brighttail is self-centered as they are the protagonist and know they are above the other side characters, thus making them and the other protagonist’s kind of like gods in Bright’s universe. Its essentially ironic, as we know that being in a position of power or God-like is actually something the protagonists should be avoiding. Just look at the creature, I'm sure many characters think they want to be like them, but in reality the creature is depressed and in pain so who wants that?
this line also relates to the Jabberbeak, little dude got ISSUES. Essentially, not sure if Bright’s changed\gunna change his motivation and backstory, but from what I know he’s basically ridiculed restlessly and cursed to be disliked by everyone, he’s also a cry baby, anxious and a bit selfish. Then again I think he’s supposed to be child-aged sooo, makes sense. He eventually gets past his anxiety though and all that pain is replaced by anger so he sets out to kill the protagonists. if you wanna kill a God, then your one step away from wanting to become one in my books.
A superorganism is a creature Made up of many different individuals Thanks to technological systems You are me, and I am you We are tied together into a single processing system Together we are an amazing superor—
These lyrics are just what I’d imagine the Virus would say to justify her actions\explain them to Glitch. They are tied together, thanks to their wiring, one in the same. Virus also would most likely see herself as superior, at least in some regard. I'm honestly not sure she has any emotions so I'm kinda grasping at straws here
When I grow up, I need to be A superorganism, come on give it to me Are you aware? Are you alone with the taste Of architectures forming from my acid waste
This line makes me think of the city, how all the animals with four eyes are slaughtered and 1 eyes are treated as slaves. The city and the way it functions is just what's left over from remanence of the creature meddling, its ‘acid waste’ some would say. This line could also correlate to Brighttails need to be the ‘superorganism’ or the one to put an end to all of this madness and suffering, the one on top, the protagonist.
It wasn't right for you to refuse It's okay now you're part of the only thing alive
This reminded me of the creature and how they’d probably reprimand the protagonist’s once they found out they were trying to destroy them. In the creatures eyes this is a great opportunity, they're being generous and far to patient with the protagonists. Since the protagonist’s worlds have been deleted and non of the other characters are technically alive, its fair to say the creature and the Protagonists are apart of the only living part of the story, they actually effect how things will happen and how the story will end... more or less anyway.
Everybody needs to be a superorganism A superorganism, a superorganism I wanna be a superorganism A superorganism, a superorganism I gotta be a superorganism A superorganism, a superorganism I have to be a superorganism A superorganism, a superorganism
These lyrics just relate to again, the change in Brighttials character, how they change and I’d imagine become obsessed with their ‘destiny’ as the plot progresses and unsettling truths are revealed.
this concludes song analysis 5, see ya next time~

Harmony and Heartache: The Dual Role of Music in Expressing Joy and Sorrow
Music serves as both a mirror and a maker of our emotions, capable of capturing the heights of joy and the depths of sorrow. In our last discussion, we delved into how certain songs motivate, comfort, and trigger nostalgic memories. Today, let's explore how music expresses the complex spectrum of happiness and heartache, helping us celebrate our victories and heal our wounds.
The Joy in Beats
Music isn't just about the lyrics; it's also about the beats that lift our spirits. Consider the jubilant rhythms of "Happy" by Pharrell Williams. This song uses upbeat tempos and lively harmonics to craft a sound that's almost universally recognized as the soundtrack of joy. The repetitive chorus, "Because I'm happy / Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth," uses a call-and-response technique that invites listeners to participate in the happiness the song radiates. How does this song influence your mood? Does it bring a smile to your face?
Melodies of Melancholy
On the flip side, music has the profound ability to articulate sorrow in a way that words alone cannot. "Someone Like You" by Adele beautifully showcases this. The slow piano accompaniment intertwined with Adele’s powerful vocals evoke a sense of longing and loss that many can relate to. The lyrics, "Never mind, I'll find someone like you / I wish nothing but the best for you too," speak to the universal experience of unreturned love or the ending of a relationship. What songs do you turn to when dealing with heartache?
Combining Joy and Sorrow
Some songs manage to blend joy and sorrow, reflecting the real complexity of human emotions. "Hey Jude" by The Beatles is a perfect example. It starts with a comforting message to Jude to take a sad song and make it better, gradually building into a crescendo of voices and instruments that convey a powerful message of hope and communal support. How do songs that combine these emotions affect you differently than those that focus solely on one emotion?
Music's ability to convey and evoke such a wide range of emotions is what makes it an essential part of our lives. Whether it's a song that makes us dance with joy or one that soothes our broken hearts, music finds a way to speak directly to our souls.
Which songs resonate with you as expressions of joy or sorrow? Are there tracks that you feel perfectly balance these emotions? Share your experiences and song recommendations in the comments below—let's continue to explore the emotional power of music together.

Analysis of ‘Busy Boy’ by ChloexHalle and it’s deconstruction of the ‘nice guy’
The song begins with a light, sweet, almost children's nursery sounding song. The song is sung casually, lightly, almost as if they are humming while doing the dishes and not thinking about it. In the background we hear 'bum bum, bum bum" by a man, referencing a 50's and 60s sound used by many artists such as the Contours, or Sam Cooke. "That's why, the nice guys they will always last...that's why, the playboys always finish last..". The phrase is a specific reference to "nice guys always finish last". A construct that originated from the persona of the 'nice guy'. A character often used in movies and film, he a man who is too kind to women, and therefore never gets the girl. In the opening of the song, the lyrics reverse the popular use of the term, and claim that nice guys prevail over playboys. This sets the theme for the whole song, it is a reclamation of the constructs men have created. The nursery song symbolizes ideas we have learned as children, Chloe and Halle are creating a new version.
After the intro, the song uses angelic harmonies (these, as opposed to the childlike nursery, are more mature and professional, deeper voice and clearer audio quality) to transition into an immediate slow bass. A low voice recites the situation for us, an angry, annoyed tone. Exact facts are lined up, we follow the text received at 9, to another girl receiving the same message at 9:15, to a further history of the busy boy lying. The line "then you disappear like I'm a fool" is emphasized with a (yeah). Our narrator is fully aware of the situation she is in, and how she is being treated. We empathize with the narrator, even if you have not experienced the situation- we understand the pain of being taken for a fool and taken for granted. Which sets us up for the rest of the story-
We start asking, is her judgement clouded by love? Does she want the busy boy despite how he treats her? How will the song continue, will she confront him? Will he redeem himself?
And suddenly we don't have time to process any of it, a sharper, lighter voice comes to the defense. A sharp attack- "that's why I don't play with you, I spend a little time, don't stay with you". It's blunt, a wake up call. We know the narrator isn't a fool, and here she is reminding us, she isn't going to be taken for any type of ride by someone who doesn't value her. But we wonder why she continues to see him, "I tell you want to hear all the time, just because you're so damn fine".
And as the chorus drops, RELIEF. We realize that this is not just a game played by the busy boy, but also by our narrator. She refuses to submit to whatever busy boy thinks he is doing, her humor and nickname for him "busy boy" gives him a new label, one that retracts his power. The next few lines after the chorus use the relief to continue the humor, my personal favorite line: "it's 4 o'clock, and you're sending me too many pictures of your (harmonizing)", and then a laugh. We share the awareness with the narrator, busy boy's actions are still catalogued by the time, because the intelligence of the narrator is a part of her character. But in these lyrics, they are lighter than busy boys introduction, there is no graveness in the singing, it's funny, and they are ridiculing the fact that he thought he could get away with any of it. They then proceed to list more and more proof of how aware they are, stumbling on his girlfriends page and wishing him a congratulations on the baby.
"That's why I just play with you... you ain't ever gonna get deep inside, even though you're so damn fine" Again the sharp rebuttal comes in, reminding us the entire reason that our narrator pays any attention to busy boy. Because of his attractiveness. The chorus fades to a contemplative humming, from upbeat and fast to slower harmonizing. We wallow in these thoughts.. wondering if this is enough, if it's worth it. And then we are hit in the face with a "damn fine!". 'Fine' is sung with a smile, a guilty pleasure, but full of consciousness. The 'damn' in front of it, is used almost as an annoyance one can't help. it highlights the weakness both our narrator and busy boy have for each other, physical attraction. But it serves as a reminder that our narrator is aware, much too aware to have her heart broken.
Then, if you're like me, you listen to the song again because it's been on repeat all day. The chorus starts in again, a sweet ballad about how nice guys will always last, and it hits you- the point of the entire song. The Busy Boy is a mirrored concept of this upbeat 3 minute pop song. He is something to be enjoyed for a short while, and doesn't last. The theme of time is threaded in and out of the song to tease us with the idea of everything having an expiration date.
"Nice guys finish last" as a phrase uses loaded words like finish, and last, giving it a goal and a deadline. Relationships don't work that way and they shouldn't, not only does this song deconstruct the fact that playboys are somehow better than nice guys, but also the idea of 'finishing' at all. The phrase is a goal created by men, a way to claim victory over a woman. Chloe and Halle have removed the phrase, removed the sense of victory, their new lyric, 'the nice guys they will always last' inspires a continuation of time and relationship. And with their new term 'Busy Boy' providing a belittling way to refer to what was previously a mark of pride, the 'Playboy'- gendered terms and constructs can continue to be questioned and reversed. The song aides in an important deconstruction of the expectations of relationships. The term removes the tragedy of wanting a 'busy boy' and offers in exchange, power.

“You’re the One is potentially the oldest song on the record. It was actually the most simple to record and perhaps the most difficult to record, just stylistically. We wanted it to feel right and really really sound right, (...) be that classic dare I say: county’esque rock and roll tune that it was born to be. It was the most important song to all of us because it was the first acoustic song I think we ever wrote together(...)”

[song/mv reflection*] jj project - 내일, 오늘 (tomorrow, today)
It’s been so long since I last visited this blog and I’m coming back to post this essay/review/reflection I wrote almost two years ago.
So here’s a little shout-out to that friend who pushed me to post this despite my hesitance and fear, this is for you and I hope we start with that one step towards our dream ♥
JJ PROJECT - 내일, 오늘 (Tomorrow, Today)
youtube
(author’s side-note: It would be so much better if you watch the music video first and do not forget to turn on the English caption for better understanding of the lyrics. Enjoy ^^)
Okay, now that you’ve listened to the song and watched the video, let’s start the song analysis / reflection.
“A song you can relate to if you’re wandering in your youth.”
This statement was taken from a comment section in a post about JJ Project’s latest comeback song, Tomorrow, Today. The song 내일,오늘 (Tomorrow, Today) released last 31st of July 2017 is a mellow, pop rock alternative type of song which is very laid-back or what people may describe as “feel-good” song. The music video which showcases the simplicity and beauty of Hokkaido, Japan (where the MV was shot) also added an aesthetic appeal to the overall turnout of the song.
Watching the video for the first time, I was moved to tears not only because of the beauty of the video or the feels of seeing JJ Project, or what ahgases (fans of the duo and their main group GOT7) endearingly refer to as JJP, comeback after 5 years, but mainly because of the meaning of the song. The message of the song is what everyone can relate to. As a lot of ahgases would say, it is a song which speaks to them in a deeper level. This is what I have felt while listening to the song.
Delving into the common troubles of the youth, it is not just about being lost.
The song ponders about our choices, figuring out life, and finding what we really want.
It gives us a glimpse of what is really happening in our world and what humans are facing.
Living in a world where everything is fast-paced, we are forced to choose, and in the process, a lot of time, we fail to consider some things, and forget the main reason why we are making those choices.
Here are some lines/verses in the song which really caught my eye and got me reflecting about a lot of things in my life:
“My visions and dreams are fading away”
“You keep pushing me while my eyes are half-covered. Telling me to pick which one to go with,
Somebody let me know, Tell me which way to go, Cause I don’t know
Today I hesitantly answer the questions again, That I don’t even know the answer to
Is it this way or that way?
My decisions are getting scary
With an unstable state of mind, I’m confronting the next decision
What will I be at the end of the road? Will I regret looking back later?”
As kids, we have those hopes and dreams we keep close to our heart, vowing to make them all come true when we become adults, but growing up, we realize, some of these dreams may be impossible to reach. We wake up to the reality of the world. How harsh the society we live in is. Our dreams either get crushed or forgotten. Forgotten because we often sacrifice to follow our dreams for practicality and comfort in life. You want to be a painter? A writer? A dancer? Society says no because according to its standards, you’re not gonna be successful. It’s not a high paying job. People will look down on you and take advantage of your gift/talent for free. Why not try to be a doctor or a lawyer instead? Oftentimes, we encounter these kinds of situation where our dreams are sacrificed and forgotten.
Today’s society is all about having your life figured out. Having your own identity. And because of this, we have to comply, and even though we are still struggling to find our purpose. We lose our identity because society keeps directing us to do this, do that. We become lost. Confused. We’re like those fallen leaves getting drifted by the wind. We go where the wind goes. We go with the flow, join the bandwagon. We lose ourselves because we become too overwhelmed with everything. In our lives, we always come at crossroads. This isn’t just a phase being experienced by the youth. No matter how old you are, 20s, 30s, or even in your later adult life, there are times when you just don’t know what to do. We become clueless. We don’t know what to do with our lives anymore. We know what we want but we don’t know if can achieve them. We have to quickly decide which path to take, what career to take, because if you take too much of your time, you get judged. And at these moments, we just say “f*ck it, I’m doing this,” even if we aren’t sure if will impact our future in a good or a bad way. We have to choose without thinking. We become reckless with our decisions. We have these thoughts plaguing our minds, if I choose this decision, will I regret this later on? There is uncertainty lingering inside us. And it becomes so big, we become suffocated. We feel anxious about ourselves. In this world where everyone aims for perfection, we are expected that the decisions we make are also perfect. We become so blindsided by it that we forget what we really want.
Tomorrow, Today is a song which ponders on the reality of life and how the society operates. It is a song that speaks to everyone’s inner struggle. A song that makes you reflect your life. It makes you ask yourself, “Is this really what I want?” “Have I been living well?” and I commend JJ Project (and Park Jin Young) for penning and producing a song which speaks so much about life and the everyday struggles people go through.
P.S.
Check out these very aesthetically-pleasing photos from the duo’s Photo Essay which was released as a pre-order benefit of the physical album. And the captions they added will also make you reflect on life.
