Fic Song Tag Game
Thank you @spindrifters for the tag!! This is gonna be unhinged jsyk, basically half these songs actually inspired the fic and the other half happened to be my hyperfixation song during an intense period of writing so they do not relate lyrically at all, but the vibes… the vibes.
True Blue by Boy Genius
But it feels good to be known so well
I can't hide from you like I hide from myself
I remember who I am when I'm with you
Your love is tough, your love is tried and true blue
Okay obviously I have to include the song that TTTB gets it’s title from. You’ve never done me wrong!!! Except for that one time!!!! Genuinely the sapphic Wolfstar anthem… what else can I say….
Body to Flame by Lucy Dacus
Longing for your short hair to grow back to the way you like
Thank you for the gesture
I regret ever implying that you could be better
Didn't mean to empty your perfect body
And fill it with my passing will
Easily won, weary of losing, gullible girl
Weak and alluring, well, we break our rules
Get drunk in the dark
Laughing aloud at the spinning stars
Ok this one is scary- so what happened is I wrote two scenes for TTTB before I ever heard this song, and then Mel read them and then she listened to this song and she was like “dude… this song is about your fic and those two scenes specifically” and I was like “haha yeah it’s Lucy Dacus, the Queen of Sapphic Pining” but then I listened to the song and like… the specificity. They lyrics match up exactly. You will see when we get to fourth and fifth year, but, Lucy, my wife, we were drinking from the same mother lake…
Vampires by Tommy Lefroy
And I know you
I know you
I know you know
I know you feel everything
Okay so this one has the above lyrics, which became a sort of source code for TTTB Sirius. I associate this song with her and it helped to ground my writing of her character in the first couple chapters. Anyway I love her, also Tommy Lefroy rules, they’re gonna get big, I just know it.
Holland, 1945 by Neutral Milk Hotel
The only girl I ever loved…
This one has absolutely jack shit to do with anything related to this fic, but I was deeply hyperfixating on it back in January when I was first outlining TTTB, sooo yeah. I also wrote the first scene I ever wrote for this fic while listening to this song on repeat at my favorite coffee shop.
The Bench by Like Roses
Break down with me on the phone
Just like we did those nights when I was at home
This is another one that lyrically doesn’t have much to do with anything, but really helped me achieve the specific angsty headspace I needed to be in to write the year one Christmas chapter when Sirius goes home to Grimmauld Place. Also the above lyrics really gave me ‘prongsfoot talking through the mirrors’ vibes. I know this song is actually about addiction, like I’m aware.
Francis Forever by Mitski
I don’t think I could stand to be
Where you don’t see me
Mel texted me in a panic because she had read a snippet of a scene I wrote from sixth year and then listened to this song in close succession and she said that she had never really listened to these lyrics before, or she didn’t fully get what they meant, until she read that snippet and thought about this song and had a breakdown. Anyway, something for y’all to look forward too. Post prank vibes, delicious angst.
Honorable Mentions go to:
The entirety of Transgender Dysphoria Blues by Against Me- nothing is more punk rock than being transgender and if you haven’t listened to this album yet, do yourself a favor and turn that shit up right now. Fucking bangers all the way through.
Dreamt We Were Closer by Ash Tuesday- look it’s not my fault that this is a Wolfstar song, okay???
For Sale: Ford Pinto by Rosie Tucker- my current hyper-fixation song, idk what will come of it yet but it is a whole vibe.
Tagging Mel @capacity-for-wonder who is on her honeymoon but will never miss a chance to make a playlist.

3 & 33, 8 & 88?
3 - "Die 4 Me" by Halsey
this was one of Halsey's only releases in 2023, so it doesn't surprise me it ranked so high! I still love the updated lyrics.
33 - "For Sale: Ford Pinto" by Rosie Tucker
a great song for a breakdown. or for just driving around. I found the ending annoying at first, until I sang it at the top of my lungs, and then it just clicked. a bittersweet song about being alive.
8 - "Bells in Santa Fe" by Halsey
IICHLIWP will never let me go! this song is still in my top five on that album.
88 - "Cheerleader" by Ashnikko
I ended up being a tiny bit disappointed by Ashnikko's debut full-length album, but this song was a standout.
Thanks for asking! <3

This song was originally one of my alarms but I had to take it off! Because I was listening to it on repeat and I didn't always notice when the alarm went off.
I made art about it when I couldn't handle anything anymore. Also when the only way to not be in pain was to be distracted and moving around.

MIKEY’S PERSONAL BLOG 84, December 2017
On Christmas Eve, Mum and I attended the Carols by Twilight - Christmas Eve event held at Max Pawsey Reserve near Fountain Gate. It’s my second time going to a local Carols event, my first being over 6 years ago. As always, the event is run and organised by Casey City Church with many guest speakers and singers performing on stage including Andrew De Silva, He Planned Us and Gary Pinto. Of course, these Carols have a very Christian in orientation and whilst I don’t believe in God per se, it’s highly irrelevant. For me, it’s about being involved with the City of Casey community and celebrating the true meaning of Christmas...love, joy, peace, family, friends and being grateful for what you have in life.
We didn’t end up staying long as the weather decided to turn cold with a bitter, icy wind blowing across the reserve but it was still nice that we made the effort to listen to a few of the carols. After grabbing some coffees at Maccas, we decided to finally check out some Christmas lights. I was determined to visit the hugely popular display down at Hugo Court in Narre Warren to see what all the fuss was about. Getting down there early and finding a side street or court to park in is key because the traffic banks up very quickly.
We started by walking down Song Street with one house featuring two snow machines, creating lots of white foamy suds. It looked really cool. Making our way down to Hugo Court, there was literally people from the local CFA directing the crowd with glowing red wands. The moment we set foot into the court, it was bedlam. A cascade of brightly lit LED lights, inflatable Santas, Penguins, Snowmen, Reindeer, flashing signs, a radio station playing Christmas songs. But instead of being overwhelmed, I found it to be a truly magical experience. I had a ball taking photos and letting the atmosphere sink in.
The only downside was getting out of the area. A few drivers were getting impatient and rowdy. There was huge potential for road rage but thankfully Mum and I dodged a bullet. You just have to be really patient and be prepared that it can take up to 20 minutes to get yourself back onto Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road. But besides that, it was definitely worth going to. Hopefully I don’t leave it this late next year!
On Christmas Day, My parents and I had a busy morning ahead getting all the food prepared and cooked as well as decorating the outside patio area. It didn’t take long for me to start feeling exhausted but it came together really well. It’s a big area of strength for me, the creative side. We always go all out when it comes to Christmas and it’s easily my favourite part of the day.
In the afternoon, we had relatives over from my step-dad’s side of the family. We had a lovely roast for lunch which included chicken, ham, pork, potatoes, pumpkin, beans, peas and carrots. The conversations at the table were difficult for me to join in with as usual and when the topic turned to sexual predators and pedophiles, I was ready to exit stage left. I just feel so disturbed and uncomfortable hearing that stuff and that’s only so much I can handle before I have to leave.
In the late afternoon, we opened up our Christmas presents under the tree. I always find this experience to be both overwhelming and awkward. At least now that I’ve got an official diagnosis, it would explain why I’m not as “expressive” as I should be. From the outside looking in, most people would think I’m ungrateful due to my lack of excitement but it’s far from the case. It’s more I have no idea what to say besides thank you. I couldn’t be more grateful, I just don’t often show it with my non-verbal cues and body language (Autism 101).
In the evening, we had my Aunt, Uncle and Cousins come over for dinner. I decided to have a Nanna nap before they arrived as I was feeling buggered as. The food we served up was similar to our lunch with a selection of chicken, pork and ham plus coleslaw, potatoes and pasta salad. We engaged in the usual tradition of pulling Christmas crackers, wearing paper hats and reading the lame jokes inside of them.
It’s true that I’m still very reserved, socially awkward and sensitive even around my family but it’s something that I’m continuing to work on embracing and accepting. It was a really long day for me overall but the upside is that we didn’t have to travel anywhere today and the weather was lovely throughout the day.
On Boxing Day aka “Recovery Day”, we spent the morning sitting around the dining table eating bacon and eggs for breakfast, talking about how dodgy our current government are and how the oil companies are ripping us off when it comes to the price of petrol. I honestly felt like a zombie crawling out of bed after all the food and alcohol I consumed yesterday. Thankfully, no hangover though! Then comes to fun part of cleaning everything up and packing away all the decorations. One step at a time though.
I spent most of the afternoon just resting up and trying to catch up on some sleep. The last thing I wanted to do was rush out to the Boxing Day sales. Seriously FUCK THAT! I’d rather shop online to be honest. In fact, I decided to buy a few Christmas sweaters from eBay ready for next Christmas. My cat Lotus decided to join me for a nap for the first time ever on my bed. It’s good to see that she’s finally warmed up to my bedroom and my bed.
On Wednesday morning, Mum and I both had well overdue full body Chinese massages at Best Body Massage in Eden Rise, Berwick. Best Body is basically just Top 1 Therapy trading under a different business name but offering the same deals. I opted for a deep tissue massage with hot stones which only cost me $45 for a whole hour. The guy did a very thorough job getting all of those knots undone and relieving a lot of tension through my back, shoulders, neck and spine. Pretty much over a month’s worth of stress, anxiety and muscle soreness.
This place is still unfortunately plagued with the same issues as Top 1 Therapy. Don’t expect to get much conversation from your massage therapist unless you’re fluent in Mandarin. Also, they could really benefit from having a staff member act as a permanent receptionist and door greeter as the guy doing my massage had to constantly rush off to attend to phone calls and customers dropping in. Basically, they’re lacking in the customer service department but considering I’m only paying $45 instead of $100 and the therapists are highly skilled in what they do, I can let the cons slide. http://edenrisevillage.com.au/store...
On Thursday morning, Mum and I visited the Cranbourne Hyundai Used Car Dealership to begin the search for my fourth car. We were both wearing our invisible “JUST LOOKING” t-shirts as I’m still extremely guarded and weary when it comes to car salesmen. Thankfully the guy who looked after us, Rod, was quite easy going and pleasant to deal with. He didn’t pressure us to make a sale at all, nor was he holding “grand sale” balloons like Pennywise The Dancing Clown (A sure bet to run in the opposite direction!).
I brought along my list of potential cars that I wanted to have a look at including a 2014 Hyundai i30 Active GD2, a 2013 Kia Cerato S TD and a 2011 Ford Fiesta Zetec WS. I was leaning the hardest towards the i30 and even briefly sat in the car to check out some of the features. I wrote down some “must haves” including a CD player, keyless entry, rego, 3 year warranty, low kilometers under 100k and priced under $15,000. It pretty much ticked all those boxes but I refused to sign any paperwork yet. I’d rather have a few models to consider and make sure I’m 100% happy with the next car I purchase. http://www.cranbournehyundai.com.au/...
On Thursday night, I attended my Body Balance class with Rowena at YMCA Casey RACE. It’s been a couple of weeks since I last went to a group fitness class so evidently I was feeling pretty out of practice tonight but it didn’t take long to pick things up. Rowena had a strong Irish accent and was very bubbly throughout the class.
We did our usual sequence of exercises during the class including: Tai-Chi Warmup (Swan Dive, Overhead arm circles), Sun Salutations (Forward Fold, Downward Facing Dog, Plank, Baby Cobra), Standing Strength & Balances (Warrior 2, Sun Warrior, Side Angle Pose, Triangle Pose, Half Moon Pose), Pilates (Bicycle Crunches, Firefly, Arm and Leg balances, Knee to Nose), Twists & Hamstring Stretches (Butterfly Forward Fold, Serpentine Twist with Leg Extension) and Relaxation. https://www.lesmills.com/workouts/f...
On Friday morning, Mum and I returned to the Cranbourne Hyundai Used Car Dealership for a second look. Thankfully I didn’t have to deal with any Max Kirwin type used car salesman (Good one Max? More like get the fuck away from me Max!) as Rod was there again. As I was walking through the middle of the yard, one of the cars immediately caught my attention. It was a dark blue coloured 2015 Hyundai Accent sedan. On closer inspection, it pretty much ticked all the boxes on my wishlist and inside I knew that this was “the one”.
Rod sat myself and Mum down inside his office. The space was clinical white and undecorated aside from the Hyundai logo and a few certificates on the wall. The anxiety levels were building rapidly inside of me but I knew that if I didn’t put the car on hold today, I would probably regret it. Still I find the whole process of signing contracts and paperwork to be extremely daunting. After sorting out some technical issues, we managed to get the ball rolling and Rod even put a personalised “SOLD” sign inside the car for me. I’ll be finalising the transaction and picking it up next week if all goes well.
On Friday night, I went to an RPM Express class with Laura at YMCA Casey RACE in Cranbourne East. Being the Christmas holidays and also the fact that it was wet and humid outside, there was only 3 people in tonight’s class but it was no surprise. I was still determined to get a really good workout done and I decided to turn up the resistance quite a few times up to 40-50%. The mountain climbing sections were easily the hardest for me but I was burning heaps through my knees, glutes and thighs.
I was also more focused on the wattage display and tried hard to get it over 170-200W. I was a good feeling pushing myself as hard as I could on the bike and being an express class, it was much shorter than usual. https://www.lesmills.com/workouts/f...
2017 has been a year of major growth for me. From having the strength and courage to turn down and walk away from people and situations that no longer serve me well to having emotional breakdowns in front of my former personal trainer to getting counselling and a formal diagnosis for mild Autism. I've done a lot of personal development, worked on improving my mental health issues and put myself out of my comfort zone (Do It In A Dress charity event, work Christmas function, Yoga Retreat in Moggs Creek).
It's been a huge year for fitness, trying out new things (Strength & Conditioning, Bootcamp, CrossFit, Water Workout, Swimming, Spa and Sauna) and pushing myself really hard to achieve results. There's been plenty of bumps in the road along the way from changing gyms to yoga studios closing down but none of these things have hindered me.
It's been a really tough year financially for me but I've always tried to persevere and get myself through it. I didn't attend as many local gigs as I would have liked to this year but many hurdles got in the way. Hopefully my attendance will pick up in 2018 as I find a better way to balance my life. However, I feel like my contribution was still significant in terms of writing reviews, band promotion, buying merch and sharing band related posts.
Thank you to all of my family and friends for sticking by me and supporting me this year.
MY GOALS FOR 2018 SO FAR                                                                            1. Buying myself a new car, probably an ex-demo 2016 Hyundai i30 or similar at Cranbourne Hyundai.
 2. Joining an art/painting/life drawing class in Berwick.
 3. Travelling to places including Redwood Forest in East Warburton and Launceston, Tasmania.
 4. Continuing to write blogs, reviews, interviews with Behind The Scene and supporting the local music scene. Increasing my attendance at local gigs.
5. Regular yoga classes with Keren Gurrieri at Body Yoga.
6. PT sessions/Group sessions at The Yard Strength & Fitness with Mandi Herauville and Erynne McCrorey.
 7. Burning body fat and gaining lean muscle around the arms, legs, thighs, stomach, back, hips, glutes etc. Losing another 5-10kg.
8. Joining a support group to help with my mental health issues and emotional wellbeing e.g. GROW group, The Anxiety Disorders Association of Victoria (ADAVIC).
9. Joining another cooking class at Balla Balla Community Centre.
10. Continuing to work on improving my self-confidence, self-care and personal development to become a better person.
11. Continuing to attend Group Fitness classes and seminars at YMCA Casey ARC and YMCA Casey RACE. Trying new classes including Aqua Cycle, Aqua Yoga, Virtual fitness classes.
 12. Volunteering at an Animal Shelter, caring for domestic pets.

Bakersfield’s Youthful Banger Gang Is Disturbing The Peace In Style
Youth.
Anyone who’s attended Famoso Raceway’s March Meet or the NHRA California Hot Rod Reunion during the last decade has seen them. You can’t miss the whippersnappers prominently positioned near the finish line. Are they the real deal or merely posers playing the role of traditional, blue-collar, junkyard-scrounging hot rodders twice each year? Are their primered, primitive Model A and Model T Fords just noisy props? Contrasting with hundreds of highly powered, flawlessly finished cars displayed just behind the bleachers, are these weather-beaten beaters the in-progress projects they appear to be, or are the mismatched panels cleverly arranged to create that impression? The cars are suspiciously positioned along the pitside fence at the crack of dawn, before spectators arrive. Hmmmm, do these local kids actually drive stock four-bangers on the “Streets of Bakersfield” immortalized in the Buck Owens song, or does a buddy working a secret back gate sneak their trailered relics through the pits before an unsuspecting public shows up to witness the deception? HOT ROD Deluxe determined to learn the truth. We even followed two of the youngsters home, just to be sure.
You know it’s a young gang when the de facto boss is all of 33. The gang’s vehicles of choice were manufactured in the late 1920s or first two model years of the 1930s. Their preferred powerplants are nothing like the big, powerful V8s flexing muscle in the car-show area. No, these miniature motors are just like the underpowered four-bangers that those other hot rodders jerked out of their Models T and A and junked.
“A ’32 is way out of touch, pricewise,” explained Tyler Weeks, leader of the pack, at the 2017 March Meet. “From the ’32s on, the cars get expensive. Deuces are iconic, they make beautiful hot rods, and not many were made. That was the depths of the Depression, you know. A lot more Model Ts and Model As had already been built, and there are lots more parts around today. Our cars were all put together with swap-meet stuff. In fact, most of it came from right here in town, either at Famoso’s nostalgia races or horse trading with older guys in the Model A Club. Building a banger is far easier than a flathead, for a fraction of the cost. They’re just so simple: air and fuel in; spark, ignition; exhaust out. With a V8, you’ve got twice as many cylinders, two heads instead of one, more parts to buy, to break, to wear out. A stock Model A engine will run for a long time, as long as you don’t modify it radically, or try to turn it much over 2,500 rpm. Some guys will spend the money to make one breathe and spin higher, but these aren’t race engines.”
Tyler had some history with small, cheap, four-cylinder powerplants even before spotting the $3,500/OBO classified ad for the blue ’30 coupe that changed his life at 22. “Volkswagens were a good start for me,” he said. “I had one in high school, when those cars were still affordable. It was lowered, had dual Webers, a merged header, Centerline wheels. I had no experience with old Fords. My coupe came with a Model A motor, laying sideways in the framerails, that I wrongly assumed was no good. I even bought a 2.3L Pinto engine to replace it. That’s a pretty common conversion, one I thought I could handle. The previous restoration project stopped in 1966. The car had been sitting, all apart, for 41 years. A member of the local Model A Club introduced me to Rick Davis, the owner of Vintage Restorations, who talked me out of the Pinto. Rick invited me to bring the engine to his house. We pulled the head and he said, ‘This thing’ll run!’ That same engine is still in the coupe.”
We were pleasantly surprised to hear that HOT ROD Deluxe was among his earliest influences. “When I was 14 or 15, I saw the first two issues and got interested in these cars. My high school library had the Hot Rod Yearbooks, all bound inside hard covers. In 2001 or ’02, I showed the librarian that most of them hadn’t been checked out since the ’70s. I asked if any were for sale. I got them all for next to nothing. They taught me about bodywork, fiberglass, paint, everything. Tex Smith’s books and Pat Ganahl’s history books are awesome. Club members have passed down some great old books, too.”
Backed up along Famoso Raceway’s spectator fence, it’s the four-cylinder cars and trucks that seem to attract the most attention from both extremes of the crowd’s age span. Really old guys will stop and stare and smile, reminded of something from their own automotive experience. Whenever a young guy or gal works up the nerve to approach the banger gang, questions are answered fully and respectfully. If the kid seems serious, he or she might be invited to try out a driver’s seat, work the shifter, listen to the little engine pop and bang. Just like them, the owners themselves were in their teens or early twenties when they got hooked. We wondered aloud about the appeal of almost-100-year-old jalopies to a youngster who’s never ridden in a vehicle not equipped with at least one smartphone and cupholder.
“Maybe it’s Great Depression–era thinking,” Tyler speculated, “wanting to learn, not having to rely on somebody else to come do it. You can figure something out, mechanically reverse-engineer the problem. Do it for yourself! I was able to take shop classes—auto shop, welding, construction, ag—that a lot of schools don’t have now, unfortunately. But young people have all kinds of different ways to start, without necessarily spending much money. Kids might start out with BMX bikes or radio-controlled cars, learning the mechanical aspects of something. They see our stuff and say, ‘I want to build a hot rod like that! How’d you do it?’
“I tell them the same thing that I say to older people who want to get a hot-rod project going: Get something that’s complete and running and make it your own. It doesn’t matter what, as long and it runs and drives decent. That’s better than trying to piece something together, especially when you don’t have the space or tools. Otherwise, it might end up sitting, like a lot of my stuff. I had a ’40 Ford pickup that was too far gone, beyond my space requirements. I would’ve had to take it completely apart and it would’ve been all over my driveway, because I don’t have room in my garage. I had to sell it.”
Tyler also suggested getting help “from people who are looking out for your best interests. Older guys like to be asked. The [Model A] club did that for me. I don’t know why. Maybe they saw how much I wanted to learn, how much a young person appreciated all that they’d learned. Our oldest member is 95, a World War II veteran. He drives his Model A to the meetings. These guys want to pass along their knowledge, and their parts. If they see you working on something and they have a piece you need to accomplish your goal, they’ll usually work with you on price. I once got a good Model A motor for two bucks and a beer! I was hanging around Rick Davis’ restoration shop one night. He had an industrial T engine, covered with all kinds of junk, that I wanted for its standard bore. The block could’ve been cracked, for all Rick or I knew. I said, ‘C’mon, sell me that engine,’ and he said, ‘Well, get me a beer from across the street—and two bucks.’ I thought it was a joke, but I walked to the market, anyway. I brought back a tall can, pulled two dollar bills out of my wallet, and he sold me that engine.”
“Almost everything that my friends and I own was cheap, or free,” Tyler added. “A hot rodder will always find a way. I tell younger people that if you want to do something badly enough, and you’re willing to work hard enough, you’ll get to where you want to be.”
The gang’s latest banger is the remarkably original ’31 slant-window sedan that David Abla, 27, imported from the family of a late Michigan man who’d owned it since the 1950s. David replaced the blown head gasket and hit the road, ever so slowly; top speed is 55 mph. His only other repair was getting the original heater working.
Tyler Weeks, 33, is the old man of the banger gang and its go-to guy for early Ford parts and guidance. He’s also the youngest member, by a quarter-century, of the Ford Model A Club of America’s oldest chapter. Ali Dyess, a valued member at large, writes newsletter and magazine articles, keeps the club’s books, and handles hospitality. Her laptop and spreadsheets have modernized the group’s record keeping, replacing cardboard boxes full of handwritten ledgers dating back to the Bakersfield chapter’s 1957 formation. (Yes, she kept all of those files, stored lovingly at home.)
Along the top-end fence at Famoso, the old Fords that attract the most attention are the simplest and least-powerful in the lineup. None of the owners is striving for period perfection or car-show points, obviously. Affordability and practicality prevail. All of the owners proudly pointed out parts that restorers and other rodders discarded as unusable. These are working-class hot rodders on young people’s budgets whose main mission is keeping early iron on the road, by day and night. Alternators are among the few concessions to newer technology. Scrounging for usable six-volt starters helped inspire these 12-volt conversions.
The ’30 coupe was Tyler’s first hot rod. It was taken apart in 1966 and remained in pieces until he started putting the puzzle back together in 2007 with guidance from older Model A Club members and especially a local restorer, Rick Davis.
Of the many early Fords that Weeks acquired during a decade of haggling and horse trading, these two were the only two rolling under their own power when we visited Bakersfield. Passersby overheard dissing the crude roadster pickup do not offend an owner who repurposed restorers’ cast-off junk into what he calls the P.O.S. Special. He bought the cab section, originally a ’29 roadster, and bed just to get an included ’32 grille shell that nearly matched the patina’d blue of the coupe, and now adorns that car (background). The chassis previously supported Debbie Launer’s street rod. “With a few exceptions, it’s the accumulation of pieces discarded by members of the Model A Club,” Tyler said. “These are all parts that were either on their way to the scrapyard, about to be melted down or cut up, or used to make patch panels that match the thickness of original steel.”
Blown-fuel racing at Famoso remains a 1,320-foot affair, and this prime parking area beyond the last grandstand affords the best, closest look at top-end action. Sisters Ali (left) and Sara Dyess enjoyed the last March Meet from Tyler’s P.O.S. Special.
It doesn’t get any more real than this pair, pictured on the day in 2013 when Tyler Weeks brought home his roadster pickup. The shortened bed is now attached to buddy David Abla’s T roadster. Twice as many cylinders power the traditional roadster pickups of John Wright (seated) and David Abla (who also owns the stock ’31 sedan). Starting with just the black ’26 T shell, Wright, 28, and buddy Bob Gleim gradually located a Model A frame, ’26 bedsides, 300-inch Buick, and Turbo 350. John, a truck driver, says that the combination cruises Highway 99 happily at 75 mph.
The gray-primered ’27 roadster pickup on ’31 rails is David Abla’s interpretation of the hot rod that a young guy like him might’ve built from scratch in 1956, right down to its ’56-coded 265 Chevy block, ’39 Ford gearbox, and ’39 Columbia two-speed rearend. In overdrive (2.92:1, vs. 3.78:1), the car reportedly cruises at 110-plus. All he had five years ago were a rusty cowl and two doors. “Ninety percent of the rest came from swap meets at the drag strip,” said David, a 27-year-old crane operator.
When the garage door is down, there’s no hint from the street that the neat, suburban property shared by Tyler Weeks and Ali Dyess contains what Tyler calls “my personal junkyard of pre-1940 Fords.” At left is the Deuce grille shell that prompted his purchase of the roadster pickup at right.
That’s a Model A chassis under the ’22-’25 roadster that Weeks is building for F.A.S.T. time trials in Santa Margarita, California.
Tyler identified it as a “late-’31 Model A Deluxe doodle bug out of Rosamond, California.”
Weeks is one millennial with yard art almost a century old. Tucked out of sight are a ’26-’27 roadster and ’22 touring.
A lifetime’s worth of future projects are as close as the carport behind the house. The roadster is a bone-stock ’26, complete down to its original wooden wheels.
What stories a retired dirt-track coupe could tell! Behind the four-inch-chopped Model A are two Model A pickup beds overflowing with T and A body panels.
No pool party is complete without decorations. A hot rodder never knows when he’ll need a flathead six out of a ’37 Chrysler, right?

Took a few days to write you another essay, whoops. So the disclaimer here now that I've outed myself as a..."professional"...is that the actual stuff i listened to most this year were albums that i had sent to me by publicists for work and therefore didn't get factored into my wrapped. Future essays will def come to your inbox @ofherlionheart
3. "Hardline" by Julien Baker
Tbt to when i wrote a review of this album and my editor had to cut an 800 word rant about how Julien Baker is the platonic ideal of emo's evolution in the year of our Lord 2021 (which...if you're interested in — in light of the great pop punk renaissance of 2022 — i can send you, haha)
6. "On the Ground" by Rosé
The song that made me finally check out Blackpink. Also, we love an anti-chorus, babeyyy!! Made me think about writing a trend piece about the restructuring of the radio-friendly pop song over the course of the last five years (where the main hook in the chorus is instrumental), which seems to have started with Bieber's "Where R U Now" in...2015? (I don't feel like looking it up) and truly reached peak ascendency with "Blinding Lights"
9. "Lost One" by Jazmine Sullivan
Album of the year, babeyyy! Adele is truly the knockoff, White Jazmine Sullivan. Don't listen to store brand R&B, friends, get yourself the real deal. (Also this song hits the indie-crossover sweet spot because this muted filter on the guitar is 1000% a sonic signature of Phoebe Bridgers)
12. "For Sale: Ford Pinto" by Rosie Tucker
Best god damn song about a panic attack since Courtney Barnett's "Avant Gardener"!!!! (Also funny as hell — "Time is a trash compactor, I’m feeling pressed"? Five stars 10/10)
Ahhh fuck it, here's my elevator pitch for the whole album because in an ideal world, they'd be so popular on Tumblr:
"I can't believe I'll die before becoming a frog," Rosie Tucker sings on their superb third album full of effervescent melodies and squiggly guitar lines. It's a funny one-off until you realize it's a triple-layer metaphor about the shape-shifting nature of the self, the limits of desire and the endless march of time. But that's Sucker Supreme in a nutshell: breezy, brilliant, tender, playful, paranoid and hopelessly human.
(there were so many great songs this year that spoke to trans experiences, it made me so hopeful! more art about the weird experience of having a body and commodifying identity! CC Halsey's "i am not a woman I'm a god")
15. "The Thrill" by Wayne Snow
Weird electronic noise makes brain go brrrrr
18. "Hard Way" by Flock of Dimes
My electro-indie rock queen Jenn Wasner. She's really the whole fucking package of melody, lyrical narrative, vocal delivery, and production — which, most Good Songs only have three, if they're lucky! Whole album is sublime.
21. "Just a Lover" by Hayley Williams
God, my faaaaaaavorite thing is when artists close out an album with a 6+ minute song that rips a massive guitar solo or goes off the rails into distorted chaos. Lucy Dacus' "Triple Dog Dare"? Japanese Breakfast's "Posing for Cars"? Phoebe Bridgers' "I Know The End"? (listen, I'm not saying I'm personally responsible for the insane guitar-smashing discourse after Phoebe Bridgers played SNL — but her team at Dead Oceans *did* only release "i know the end" as a single after i called it the best song of the year in a major music publication last June. So.)
Billie Eilish, you're on thin fucking ice for sequencing "Happier Than Ever" second-to-last on your album and ruining this pattern for me
24. "Out Loud" by Remember Sports
I love this band's name, hahaha. After hearing the scream on the last chorus of this song, you will never again be satisfied by a lead vocalist phoning it in.
(Also lol @ so many of these songs being about breakups and relationship strife because...have never related)
27. "Party's Over" by Half Waif
I listened to this song so much at like, 1 am when i needed to work the next day but couldn't get to sleep because my spirit is fundamentally incompatible with working in hard news (which i did for half of this year, ugh. Anybody else's job require them to contemplate the worst of humanity on a daily basis and still expect you to stay sane enough to edit someone's shitty copy? No?). Real sad girl hours
30. "Storm in Summer" by Skullcrusher
Another excellent band name. I don't often put on music for the sake of listening to it as background noise and quieting my brain [insert 10,000 word rant about art, capitalism, and the way that Spotify is conditioning the masses to treat music as a product, as "content," and therefore dehumanizing the people who create it — CC Mitski's "Working for the Knife"!] but i wish i had a whole playlist of songs that sounded like this
So. There's a peek into my brain when i listen to music, which, even while ostensibly using Spotify for purely recreational listening, i somehow find myself incapable of turning Work Brain off.
lmao okay now i wanna know your spotify wrapped, multiples of 10
lmao babe you are TESTING my math knowledge!! also wtf i wanna know yours, too — how abt ur multiples of 3 up to 30?
10. no pulp by chong the nomad (srsly friend the POWER the INFLUENCE you had over my music this year. be proud lol)
20. idol by bts (love rm's shirt in this vid lol)
30. adios by hoody ft. gray
40. intro: persona by bts
50. when i grow up by yaeji
60. outro: crack by bts (**also love the intro of this album)
70. calvaire by spill tab (**i didn't discover santé by spill tab until the last few weeks but i LOVE it)
80. fake love by bts (**gotta mention that 79 is ricky bobby by rei ami b/c i fckn love that song. she deadass screams in the background of the first verse lol)
90. devilish by jean dawson
100. trivia 承: love by bts
