Album Review: Regina Spektor - Remember Us To Life (2016) ✰✰✰

Remember Us To Life is Spektor's 7th studio album. I have long been a casual fan - while I don't own every album, I very much appreciate her vocal tone and talent for weaving stories into her music.

The album opens with its lead single, Bleeding Heart. Her voice is in classic form, the chorus has a music box vibe which is really nice. While not the most standout of her works, it is a very nice track - I especially enjoy when things pick up near the end when the "never-never-never mind-mind-mind" gets a bit louder and more insistent.

Older and Taller is a really cute midtempo, definitely has the late 2000s indie-pop vibe that is my favorite from her.

Grand Hotel brings in the storytelling style. While there is not much variety in the melody, I enjoy the particular sound of the piano and the quickened pace.

Small Bill$ is the star of the show here. It is dynamic, dramatic, the music video is crazy and I love how dreamy the chorus sounds!

From here, we get into sleepy ballad territory which loses my interest fast. Though, I do love the piano on The Light.

The Trapper and the Furrier is a bit more interesting, has some good dramatics and a good storyline. Although the "more, more, more!" can get a little repetitive.

Tornadoland gets exciting 3 minutes in! It picks up to an almost vaudevillian cadence.

Sellers of Flowers has a nice cinematic quality and unique vocal tone/melody.

If you are a fan of piano ballads, this is definitely an album for you! Even though half of the songs are not my style, the ones I like are good enough to keep this one out of the donation bin. She definitely has more interesting albums!

Here is the song! It's very hard to pick a single line from this hahaha, Regina is one of my favorite lyricists and this is one of my favorite songs by her. But the line, "You're around 'til you're not around/And that's all you need to know" is a stand-out for me. I just love her so much.

And re: Brothers Sun fic, I definitely will be writing some! I'm also very deep into Slow Horses at the moment and have been working on a season 3 tag with some River whump, so it may be a bit but I WILL be writing Charles whump (hopefully in the near future)!!!!

second okay this song i hold very very close to my heart so i want to apply it to every character i like but also i hesitate to give any character that honor because it’s so close to my heart. i mean it’s my url so. but if you think about it goodbye my danish sweetheart could be about your undead twin who’s been erased from your memory. i mean “i don’t blame you if you want to bury me in your memory i’m not the girl i ought to be” right? also “it took me a while til i knew” bc it took taako a while to regain his memories of lup. and “there’s some kind of burning inside me it’s kept me from falling apart i’m sure that you’ve seen what it’s done to my heart but it’s kept me from falling apart” could be about lup becoming a lich for relative immortality orrrr a little more metaphorically, taako’s self preservation-over-heroism thing in the years he lived without lup. and “watered my heart till it grew” appropriate for a girl who’s trapped in an umbrella! (okay that one’s a bit of a reach)

and third! older and taller by regina spektor has the potential to be a sweet sibling song i think <3 “i remember you older and taller but you’re younger and smaller” did taako age the ten years in the main universe while lup was trapped in an umbrella? does that make him older than her by the end of balance?? i do not remember but regardless i think when a jellyfish eats your memories you might remember someone a little differently? and “enjoy your youth sounds [even more] like a threat” when you’re in a time loop of sorts (bc they essentially lived the same year in different universe during uhh? during the stolen century right?
