Tata Steel, Tata Power to Set up 41MW Solar Projects in Jharkhand, Odisha
Two Tata Group companies, Tata Steel and Tata Power, have joined hands to develop a 41 MW capacity of grid-connected solar projects in the states of Jharkhand and Odisha. In line with this, the two companies have signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for 25 years. Under the project, Tata Power will develop Photo Voltaic (PV) capacities for Tata Steel at Jamshedpur (21.97MWp) and Kalinganagar (19.22MWp), in a combination of rooftop, floating and ground-mounted solar projects. At Jamshedpur, it will develop rooftop PV with 7.57 MWp capacity, while floating and ground-mounted capacity would be 10.80 MWp and 3.6MWp, respectively. The ground-mounted PV will be installed at Sonari Airport, Jamshedpur. Kalinganagar will have 9.12 MWp rooftop PV capacities, and floating PV will constitute 10.10 MWp. Commenting on the partnership, TV Narendran, CEO & MD of Tata Steel, said “at Tata Steel, sustainability has always been a core principle that is embedded in its business philosophy and is backed by a long-term, holistic vision of achieving identified targets. We have taken several definitive steps across the value chain to reinforce our sustainability credentials. In the recent past, projects on power generation from solar and non-conventional energy sources have gained momentum across our operating locations. We will continue with our pursuit of clean energy solutions and expand our renewable energy footprint.” “We are glad to collaborate with Tata Steel to help them reduce their carbon footprint and reaffirm the Tata Group’s commitment towards the adoption of clean energy. Tata Power and Tata Steel have been collaborating for a long time to meet the energy requirements through cleaner means. This blended solar PV project is yet another milestone in our shared vision of a better tomorrow and we look forward to working closely with them for covering all their other plants across the country,” commented Dr. Praveer Sinha, CEO & MD, Tata Power. In March this year, the two companies had announced to develop a 15MW solar project at Jamshedpur. This project would generate an average of 32 MUs of energy per year. It will help in offsetting approximately average 25.8 million Kgs of CO2 annually. Earlier in 2017, Tata Power Solar had commissioned a 3MW Solar PV Power Plant in Tata Steel’s Iron Ore Mine at Noamundi. This was the first solar power plant of its kind at any iron ore mine in the country.

Konark Temple
The Sun temple in Konark in the state of Orissa was built by King Narasimhadeva in 13th century. This magnificent temple to Surya, the Sun God, is one of India’s architectural wonders and a UNESCO World Heritage.
History
Naata Mandir
The East Ganga king Narasimhadeva built the temple to commemorate military successes against Muslim invaders.According to local legend, the temple has a great aura of power that comes from two very powerful magnets said to have been built into the tower – magnets that allowed the king’s throne to hover in mid-air.European mariners sailing off the coast used the temple’s tower for navigation, but dubbed it the Black Pagoda for the frequent shipwrecks that occurred along the coast. They attributed the disasters to the legendary magnets’ effect on the tidal pattern.
Architecture
Konark Sun Temple Front view
Sun Temple at Konark displays the glory of ancient Orian architecture at its zenith. Konark temple depicts the varied materialization of Hindu architecture. Till recently, this temple serves as a navigation point to the sailors and the Europeans called this temple as ‘Black Pagoda’ owing to its black colourBuilt on the shores of the Bay of Bengal in Orissa, its main image is a superb statue of the sun god standing on his chariot.
Twelve superbly carved wheels, each representing a month of the year and seven stone horses, representing the days of the week, pull the sun god in his journey across the skies.
Musicians and dancers in the Hall of Offerings
The temple is covered with exquisite sculptures of beautiful maidens, erotic couples, dancers, deities and animals. It is a magnum opus of Orissa’s architectural grandeur. The drive along the seashore from the temple town of Puri to Konark is delightful.
The wheels of the chariot at the base of the temple are the main attraction of the Sun Temple. The shadow created by the spokes of the wheel act as sundials and gives the exact time of the day. The roof of the temple which is pyramid shaped is made from sandstone and is about 30m in height.
Stone work at Konark Orissa India
Belonging to the Kalinga School, the characteristic feature of this temple is the wavy towers build up by cupolas. A mammoth construction consisting of the main sanctum, dancing hall, audience hall and dining hall, Sun temple sits in lonely grandeur enclosed by itinerant sand. The entire structure is embroidered with complicated carvings such as images of warriors on horses, foliage, animals and other erotic sculptures.
Attractions
The Konark Sun Temple takes the form of a huge chariot for the sun god Surya, with 12 pairs of stone-carved wheels and a team of seven galloping horses (only one of which survives intact).
Chariot Wheel Konark Sun Temple
The temple also symbolizes the passage of time, which is under the sun god’s control. The seven horses, which pull the sun temple eastwards towards the dawn, represent the days of the week. The 12 pairs of wheels represent the 12 months of the year and the eight spokes in each wheel symbolize the eight ideal stages of a woman’s day.
The main entrance to the complex is on the eastern (sea-facing) side, in front of the Hall of Offerings (bhogamandapa).
Frieze of rampaging elephants below a wheel
This was a later addition to the complex and was likely used for ritual dance performances, as its walls are carved with sculptures of musicians and dancers as well as erotic scenes.
The sanctuary tower was once the centerpiece of the Konark Sun Temple, but today it is no more than a jumble of sandstone slabs off the western wing. The imposing structure with the pyramidal roof that now takes center stage is actually the porch (jagamohana).
Statue of the sun god Surya
The surfaces of the temple are carved with exquisite stone sculptures with a wide variety of subjects, including many erotic scenes based on the Kama Sutra. Erotic sculptures are found especially in niches halfway up the porch, along the sides of the platform and around the doorways of the main building.
Similar sculptures can be found on the temples of Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh. The erotic art most likely symbolizes the ecstatic bliss enjoyed by the soul when it unites with the divine, but there are a number of theories on the matter.
