Kimsooja
All images: A Needle Woman, 1999 - 2001, locations: Tokyo, New York, Delhi, Mexico City, Havana (Cuba), San’a (Yemen), six of a multi-channel projection, 6:33 min & 10:40 min. loop, collection of the artist.
Kimsooja is a Korean artist and for this artwork, A Needle Woman, she traveled the world and placed her self in some of the busiest side walks and alley ways from cities around the world. She is always photographed and filmed with her back to the audience. Kimsooja places her self, motionless, in busy straights as the waves of people come and go around her. She states that the process become a kind of meditation, she would really begin to feel the energy of all the people around her and everything would become quite still, “the presence of my body seemed to be gradually erased by the crowd.” In other words, i think what she is trying to say is that even though she was still and stood against the crowd, after some time, her body and mind had transformed for her and she had then become apart of the crowd..
Souced from a book called, Your Bright Future: 12 Contemporary Artists From Korea.
