the verses are all wukong but man if that chorus ain't maq → sun. the verses didn't even fall into sun until i heard the second one, so i jigged my brain a little bit on the first one and honestly—

—because who would suspect that the mighty monkey king, great sage equal to heaven, who does not know defeat, could ever experience sadness? no one wants to hear that. no one wants to see that. wukong is the strong arm, the tank, the heavy lifter, shield and sword all at once. he has tricked death, come back from death, defeated death, stared death in the eye and laughed. what could he possibly be so sad about? weapons don't have emotions.

aside from the fact that this hits a liiittle too close to home for me, LMK wukong has clearly stated he's making this up as he goes. he has no idea what he's doing. he's doing what he thinks is right to do in the moment. but how everyone remembers him? this perfect, infallible, unfaltering, unerring, dauntless god. in-journey, mentioning his name had been enough to give pause to even the most heinous demons (sometimes it was not tho and had the opposite effect and that was very funny). you can even see the way he'd been depicted right after the fact, that direct source being tang himself and what an idealized version of him MK had living in his head.
