Thoughts on The Artist's Way (by Julia Cameron) so far, plus some interesting passages:
So the book is like a 12 week course in getting in touch with your creative self - it provides some tools to help cultivate you creative/artist brain. It's been on my shelf for years and only now I'm getting into it.
Before the course/program begins, she opens with some introductions on what is the creative act, and 2 daily/weekly habits to maintain in order to nurture the artist brain (aka maintain consistent creative habits).
There's an initial introduction where she establishes a link between Creation and Creator (both the Artist and a Higher Creator), and how creation (aka making art) is inherently a spiritual activity. It sounds a bit weird at first, but it's actually quite interesting. There's a not-so subtle Christian undertone, but absolutely can be read as a connection/energy with Life itself (this is mentioned in the book too).
One of the things that stood out to me was:
We are, ourselves, creations. And we, in turn, are meant to continue creativity by being creative ourselves.
Then she moves on to "what to expect" from this book, which is basically a means to creative recovery (whether be an artist's block, a drought, or just a perceived lack of imagination / ideas / time / motivation / confidence in your own work / etc).
She talks about how it's important for us to have a mourning period for ourselves, and to allow that grief and pain to be transformed into something new. The book uses the term "withdrawal" as a reflection of an interior retreat - as in, we withdraw inwards during that non-creative/mourning period.
Tumblr media
Then the concept of Morning Pages are introduced - which is what I'm particularly excited to see. It's a daily exercise where you start your day with writing 3 pages of literally anything. A long stream of consciousness, about absolutely anything and everything that comes to mind.
Almost like a meditation of sorts, or a mindfulness habit. By allowing your brain to be emptied of all that is negative/ bothering you/ occupying your mind, you make space for the artist brain to thrive.
It's a way to fight your Censor - the logical part of your brain that questions everything you do. The Censor is a self-preservativon mechanism - a survival instinct - that deems everything outside of your comfort zone as dangerous.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love the way she put it like that, because I am SO guilty of letting that part of my brain dictate how I should/shouldn't live my life - and by proxy, it affects the way I approach my art. From my own notes:
[the Censor] is a form of self-sabotaging. We do not need to live in survivor mode. There is comfort in safety and familiarity - nothing grows in comfort.
The second tool/exercise introduced is the Artist Date. Like in a real relationship, an Artist Date is a weekly allocated time where you do something creative (strictly yourself), as a way to engage with the world from an artist's perspective, and nurture the creative part of yourself. To "fill the well" as they put it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's a huge emphasis on how important it is to keep our creative well (I personally call it "library") well stocked. From my notes:
Art is a wordless language. Is an "artist-brain pursuit" - a constant, life-long commitment. That language is sourced from all the sensations we experience and translate into a visual medium ; into patterns and symbols.
To keep those sources, we must participate in life, not just observe it. Art comes from detail, "from attention". From a mind void of the Logical [Censor], and with enough space for the artist to wonder. It is self-intimacy.
Avoiding ourselves, avoiding the hard questions, the reality we don't want to face, is to avoid our creative selves. Self-sabotaging.
The next chapter is Week One, which will effectively mark the beginning of the program? course? thing? Not sure if I want to start tomorrow, or if I want to sit with this for a few days first (or the week). But yeah!
So far it's pretty great, love the way some things are worded. I know a lot (if not all) of you are creatives in some way or another, or otherwise struggle with similar questions, so I'm kinda sharing this in case anyone needs it. Also just to document this aside from my notebook, accountability and all.

#1 Park Seojoon
2022 will be a very difficult year for you. There'll be a big change in your life that will force you to change your ways or your life. This change or situation won't be something that you will enjoy much. It's possible that this change might including being forced to move out of your home, going through a break up, losing your job, losing a loved one, being betrayed by your partner or a close friend or a loved one, etc.
The start of 2022 will be pretty tough and you will feel very exhausted already. It seems that you can't really catch a break. You'll feel very stressed out for the first few months, then you'll get a bit of a breather, and again the stress will continue. You may suffer from some issues related to your mental health too.
Things also don't feel like they're in your control. Unexpected things just happen. You feel like you've planned enough, yet things just happen and you're forced to adapt. This year is about learning to go with the flow and letting go of your need for control/perfection.
2022 will feel like an overall marathon. There'll be many challenges that you face overall and there can be harsh criticism coming for you too. The past will likely come to pay you a visit so mistakes from the past or things you hid in the dark in the past will come to light. It's a time to reflect and to apologize.
#2 Kang Haneul
2022 will be mostly a time for you to make new connections and to probably adjust to a new environment. You're likely entering a new phase of your life, such as the start of a new job, the start of a new school, a move to a different city/country, etc. You may find it tough at first as you try to navigate your way through this new environment.
2022 is also a time where you will be doing a lot of learning or studying. You might be learning different subjects or you might be taking some new hobby. You will also feel determined and will feel like you've accomplished several of your goals.
# 3 Sunghoon
2022 will be a year where you'll experience a lot of issues related to your health. You're likely to be prone to colds or the flu. You may find that you need to visit the doctor or the dentist more often in 2022. You're also likely to experience an illness that is quite severe or will lead to some chronic illness. It's also likely that old injuries or problems with your health will resurface. If you struggle with your mental health already, you will find it harder to deal with your mental health challenges this year.
2022 will be a year where you have to slow down and heal yourself. It's a time to forgive yourself too. You may also be prone to accidents this year like car accidents or other accidents that are uncommon. It is a year for you to be careful.
#4 Lee Seunggi
The first half of 2022 will be pretty positive. Things will feel easy for you. What you want to happen will usually happen. You will feel like things run pretty smoothly overall during the first half of 2022.
The second half of 2022 will have more drama and conflict. You'll likely get into a lot of misunderstandings and arguments. You can also find yourself sandwiched between two or more friends or family members and you'll feel like you're forced to pick sides. You may act as a mediator and feel like you're a trash can for people's emotions. You'll learn how to listen better to others and be more patient. You will also learn how to communicate with others better. You may be forced to do a lot of communicating from June 2022 onwards.
#5 Hyunbin
2022 will be a time where you will generally face issues related to money. You can feel that you often need to spend money. For example, you just get fined for parking in the wrong spot for like 1 - 5 minutes or your computer/phone breaks so you have to repair it. You will gain more confidence in 2022. You may start exercising more or eating healthy meals more often. You may even start to cook homemade meals instead of eating out. It's possible that you will become more interested in learning about nutrition and exercise. You may even take supplements or do detoxes.
You may also try to heal through alternative means like naturopathy, yoga, meditation, etc. You may become more spiritual and become more interested in spirituality, tarot, occult, astrology etc. You may even take up some hobby related to spirituality.
#7 Nam Joohyuk
2022 will be a time of fun and relaxation for you. You will feel kind of lazy throughout the year. You can feel a bit demotivated too for work/school. You just want to enjoy your time and relax. You may pick up some bad habits during 2022 too like procrastination.
2022 will overall not have a lot of drama or conflict. Things may seem kind of boring for you in 2022.
#8 Park Haejin
2022 will be a time where you will spend more time with your friends and family. You may also change your career path or your education path completely in 2022. In 2022, there'll be a big change that you make that influences your life a lot.
2022 will also be a time where you will start new projects and learn new skills. You might even start your own business. You'll also want to experiment with different things and will want to hone in on your creative side. You may want to explore your creative side and try out different hobbies related to art.
#9 Ahn Hyoseop
2022 is a year where you will focus a lot on your love life. You might have a crush on someone or you might get into a relationship. If you already are in a relationship, your relationship will move onto the next stage like become more stable or turn into an engagement/marriage or end.
You'll be more in the mood to date or go on dates. If you're already in a relationship, you'll want to try to spice up the love between you two or work on your relationship more. You might even want to end this relationship too.

Inversion
The write-up below starts with examples and a short definition followed by historical examples and detailed analysis. The analysis ends with a list of applications to which the inversion model can be applied.
Scenario 1: Do you remember when you mistakenly touched an electric fence or a hot stove? And, you never touched it again because it was a painful experience.
Scenario 2: Jeff Bezos (Founder/CEO of Amazon) approaches the problem inversely. Instead of saying “what is it that my customer wants?” he will approach the problem asking “what is it that my customer does not want?”
Scenario 3: Instead of asking “How can I become successful?” ask “What are the things I should avoid that will prevent me to achieve my goals?
What is Inversion?
These scenarios of inverting two sides is the basic premise of inversion. In scenario 1, one makes a mistake and then never goes in that direction again. That is an example of inverting. The thinking in which you want opposite — not only thinking forward but also thinking backward. This trick is a powerful idea because it de-biases us from having blinders. The goal of this exercise is to envision the negativity in any event so that it can be avoided.
History — let’s cover a few historical examples:
Tumblr media
Source: Wikipedia
Stoics (early 3rd century BC)— followed the inversion process to eliminate the worst case scenario by thinking backwards and avoiding any failures. While the Greeks may have developed the philosophy of Stoicism, many Romans also adopted the philosophy. It was a practical philosophy used as a pathway through life by many early Romans, including slaves and Emperors. The ancient Stoic philosophers like Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, and Epictetus regularly conducted an exercise known as a premeditatio malorum, which translates to “premeditation of evils.” The goal of this exercise was to envision the negative things that could happen in life. For example, the Stoics would imagine what it would be like to lose their job and become homeless. Or to suffer an injury and become paralyzed. Or to have their reputation ruined and lose their status in society.

Carl Jacaboi (1804–1851) was a German mathematician, who made contributions to elliptic functions, dynamics, differential equations and the number theory. These theories are still applicable in our modern age. How was Jacobi able to contribute so much to scientific fields during his career? He was known for his ability to solve complex problems by following a simple strategy: “Invert, always invert(man muss immer umkehren), conveying his belief that the solution of many hard problems can be clarified by re-stating them in an inverse form. He would write down the opposite of the problem he was trying to solve. In doing this, solutions came to him easily.
Deep Analysis
The power of inverse thinking is a rare and crucial skill that all great thinkers employ to their own advantage. You will often hear “How can I be successful in xyz?” This mantra is a modern ideology that dominates reality. In order to think independently, one needs to learn how to think critically and make unbiased decisions. This is where inversion comes into play. Being positive and negative is complimentary. One does not need to pick one side. Everyone wants to be a winner and be successful, but many, if not all, forget to think about how they can avoid failure. Chasing success is overvalued. Avoiding failure is equally important in being successful (for a lack of a better term).
However, do not confuse the idea of experimenting with failure. New ideas often requires experimenting until the solution is no longer falsified.
Subtractive Knowledge is when you envision negative things and then subtracting what is not important or what is wrong. Additive measuresmanifest in form of an urge to do something about a problem which may not need any intervention. Subtractive measures adhere to the philosophy of “don’t try to fix something which ain’t broken.” Nassim Taelbo also employs “subtractive epistemology.” He argues that the greatest and most robust contribution to learning and knowledge consists of removing what we think is wrong. What does not work, that is negative knowledge, is more robust than positive knowledge.
Avoiding stupidity is another way to apply inversion in your life. It’s a choice between avoiding stupidity and seeking brilliance. You can avoid a bad marriage by being loyal to your significant other. Or in life, you can avoid death by staying away from alcohol and drugs. Another way to apply inversion is to not only find role models but also find anti-role models — people you don’t want to resemble when you grow up. You want to avoid the path they took. Ambitious young people can find a lot of success in this type of thinking.
Another great implementation of inversion was by the CTO of Pandora. Pandora faced immense competition from Spotify, Apple Music, Google, and Amazon. However, it still managed to stay alive despite the heavy competition.
“90 days is the length of one quarter. That’s how far you can reasonably think and plan ahead when you’re in hyper-growth,” Conrad (Pandora’s Twitter) says. “And there’s a question you have to ask yourself at the start of every quarter:
What would be stupid for us not to do in the next 90 days?”
Charlie Munger is one of the greatest thinkers alive today. He is Warren Buffett’s business partner. Charlie Munger has adopted an approach to solving problems that is the reverse of the approach many people use in life. He avoids misery. Munger once gave a speech where he spoke about a famous Johnny Carson talk in which the comedian described all the ways one can be miserable. Munger said:
“What Carson said was that he couldn’t tell the graduating class how to be happy, but he could tell them from personal experience how to guarantee misery. Carson’s prescriptions for sure misery included: 1) Ingesting chemicals in an effort to alter mood or perception; 2) Envy; and 3) Resentment. What Carson did was to approach the study of how to create X by turning the question backward, that is, by studying how to create non-X.”
“Just avoid things like racing trains to the crossing, doing cocaine, etc. Develop good mental habits.” “A lot of success in life and business comes from knowing what you want to avoid: early death, a bad marriage, etc.”
Charlie Munger is famous for using “Invert always invert.”
“Think forwards and backwards — invert, always invert.” “Many hard problems are best solved when they are addressed backward.” “The way complex adaptive systems work and the way mental constructs work is that problems frequently get easier, I’d even say usually are easier to solve, if you turn them around in reverse. In other words, if you want to help India, the question you should ask is not “how can I help India,” it’s “what is doing the worst damage in India? What will automatically do the worst damage and how do I avoid it?” “Figure out what you don’t want and avoid it and you’ll get what you do want. How can you best get what you want? The answer: Deserve what you want! How can it be any other way?”
“[The great Algebra pioneer Jacobi] knew that it is in the nature of things that many hard problems are best solved when they are addressed backward. In life, unless you’re more gifted than Einstein, inversion will help you solve problems.”
“Let me use a little inversion now. What will really fail in life? What do you want to avoid?” “Having a certain kind of temperament is more important than brains. You need to keep raw irrational emotion under control.” “When you have a huge convulsion, like a fire in this auditorium right now, you do get a lot of weird behavior. If you can be wise [during such times, you’ll profit].”
“It is remarkable how much long-term advantage [we] have gotten by trying to be consistently not stupid, instead of trying to be very intelligent.”
“The secret to Berkshire is we are good at ignorance removal. The good news is we have a lot of ignorance left to remove.” “Just as a man working with his tools should know its limitations, a man working with his cognitive apparatus must know its limitations.”
“If you have competence, you pretty much know its boundaries already. To ask the question is to answer it.” “We know the edge of our competency better than most. That’s a very worthwhile thing.”
Applications
The type of inverse logic can be extended to many areas in life.
Math: applying inversion to solve complex math problems. Jacobi believed that one of the best ways to clarify your thinking was to restate math problems in inverse form. He would write down the opposite of the problem he was trying to solve and found that the solution often came to him more easily.
Art: inversion is often at the core of great art. Great artists fight status quo by going in the opposite direction of what society is used to. Great artists break previous rules and unconventional thinking by asking — “How can I invert the status quo?”
Project Management: Amazon employs the Press Release strategy before launching a project. If employees have an idea, they are supposed to write a one-page PR and submit to the executives. The whole process is thinking backwards. This strategy allows to remove blind folders by asking backward questions like — “What could cause the project to go horribly wrong?”
Business Management: in a modern organization, everyone is talking about innovation. Instead what if the management asks, “What are the areas where we do not innovate?” This can address to remove any biases, competition threats and innovation strategy. The same methodology can be applied when evaluating risks. Avoiding risks is a successful business strategy.
Productivity: most people want to get more done in less time. Applying inversion to productivity you could ask “What will decrease my productivity? What will distract me?” Once you find those answers, block those distractions to up your productivity.
Decluttering: inversion can also be applied when tidying yourself up. “What do I want to keep?” Not “What do I want to get rid of?” Inverting the relationship helps you answer tough questions when discarding useless things at home or office.
Relationships: people usually ask “What will make this relationship successful?” Instead ask, “What behavior will cause my relationship to end?” Inverting will help you stop behaving irrationally which can affect your relationships.
Personal Finance: everyone wants to make more money. In personal finance and investing, the hardest job is able to preserve capital. By applying inversion one could ask “How to stay in debt? What can destroy my financial well-being?” Spending too much can creep up and can prevent you from achieving your financial goals. Inversion can help you stay on track and avoid irrational behavior towards money.
Fitness: inversion can also be applied when trying to reduce weight. “How to gain unwanted weight that can cause long-term health issues and obesity? — Eating fried food, drinking sugary drinks, and not exercising” Once you have the answers, avoid them at all cost.
Startup: “How to make a product that no one wants? How to not experiment? What can we do to not talk to customers?” Then find ways to work backwards by building something that customers want and engaging them in the process.
Literature: a literary technique in which the normal order of words is reversed in order to achieve a particular effect of emphasis. For example: “People are computers. Computers are people.”

Realty Matters: Risk Management
When talking to prospective clients for my property management business, I always say, “rental property management is really about Risk Management.” I often tell the story of a client, who had previously decided to self-manage. Although he always tried to do the right thing, a small, innocent error led to a spiraling sequence of unfortunate events. The story was an example of how small errors may go undetected, unknown, and remain unrealized, until something goes wrong. Consequences in total were severe, not only financial misfortune, but it also left a lasting and profound psychological impact. But, if nothing goes wrong, is there any risk?
Risk is measured using statistics and derived from both quantitative components and qualitative factors. Qualitative factors are a challenge, particularly for individual or small unit-count property investments. Included are interpersonal relationship dynamics, such as behavior, which is possible to recognize but a challenge to quantify.
Qualitative risk management planning effectively reduces or eliminates consequences — and is the focus of this column — with most benefits achievable without statistics. An annual assessment exercise allows most real estate investors to improve business practices, whether doing rehabs, long-term holds, lending, or some combination. It is not difficult with the right tools and understanding and will elevate your business to the next level resulting in larger gains and smaller losses. Critical thinking and arithmetic are the only things necessary for implementation.
Statistics Deconstructed
The path to eliminate problems before they occur
Calculating risk is an attempt to determine probability of an outcome. A conceptual understanding of how those numbers are derived is critical for effective implementation of risk management practices. A grasp of risk theory only requires a bell curve illustration and a sprinkling of a few statistical terms when combined with practical real estate examples.
The bell curve figure has a symmetrical area under the curve that (eventually) totals 1.00 (one). Where:
μ = [mu, (pronounced “mew”)] is the data mean, the average, (expected outcome or return)
𝝈 = [sigma] the standard deviation, shows six equidistant intervals, known as the range (99.7% of 1.00)
Any given point in the graph is a probability of an event or an accumulated series of events. Events are plotted in relation to the frequency they occur (height) and distance from average (left or right of centerline). Closely plotted points indicate the deviation from average is low; loosely plotted points mean less predictability (the deviation from average is high).
Grasping the concept of risk theory is important for Risk Management planning
Roughly speaking, events that occur with high frequency are prone to have more variation than events that occur less frequently while less frequent events may mean less variation. Symmetrically speaking, consider that high frequency events having low consequence may have an aggregate severity equal to low frequency events having high consequence. Reducing variation of outcome through tighter controls reduces total severity of consequence, which is how you will apply risk management to your business.
Example of Risk Management indicators in real estate
Imagine two Renters, A & B. Renter A paid rent consistently late, on the fourth day of the month with rarely any variation. Plotted on the curve, the average would show a high frequency of late rent as averaging –four. Renter B is different. The average is one, which would indicate rent is paid on average a day early. Except many of the plots are largely spread out into the negative teens and twenties, with a few plots at 30, 40, and 60. Which has higher variation? Which has more risk? Which can you be more confident of getting paid rent on a given day?
As a separate event, the number of opportunities that a basement will flood may be far less than opportunities for rent to be paid on time, yet, the financial consequence may be quite severe. A sump pump with battery backup is installed, so all should be okay, right? Now evaluate the same two renter households. Consider Renter A vs. Renter B. Would you consider the likelihood of tampering with the sump pump between Renter A and Renter B as the same? Why or why not?
Statistics attempt to bring together all events of different types, each having probabilities and frequencies of their own, and normalize them into a single measure (expected outcome) that you determine is important. Managing the causal factors that impact the outcome is up to you.
Application of Risk Management Principles without Statistics
The key is to identify possible causes that prevent achieving the expected outcome.
It has been established now, with the iterative cycle of real estate operations, even though an event never gets tested or realized (a failure does not occur), that risk remains inherit in the system. A step most overlooked is a critical thinking exercise that accounts for possibilities of what can go wrong. Possibilities considered are possibilities managed. Proactive vs. Reactive.
Identification of 95 percent of causes are either obvious or routine enough to identify with a smidge of critical thinking. Reducing variation and consequences of those causes is a qualitative and subjective exercise. Tighter controls and mitigation plans are how risk management can be applied to your business to reduce losses and improve gains. The sum of all the individual multi-factorial events and iterative processes (e.g., getting paid rent on time, having contractors show up on time, detecting water leaks or pests before they become a problem, etc.), over time add up to the expected outcome.
Risk Management Methodology
There is a simple methodology that does not require the use of any statistics to assist with managing mistake-prone qualitative risk factors:
Consider what can go wrong (this is often the hardest part)
Determine how bad the outcome would be (consequences)
Determine how likely it is to happen (likelihood of occurrence)
Determine the risk level of the event with application of a risk score
Manage the event; eliminate or reduce the likelihood; mitigate the consequence.
  How it works:
Below are some examples to subjectively score criteria. Consequence criteria may be how severely could it cause financial or legal harm and likelihood indicates likeliness or propensity for realization.
With each event, determine the consequence and likelihood of occurrence to apply a risk score and determine if it requires some form of mitigation management. With Renter B, for example, perhaps a remote monitoring alarm should be installed that would warn you of a high-water level. Consider how to mitigate, and then re-assess:
Eliminate the possibility for the event from happening (risk of ceiling fan breaking, replace with a dome light instead if the market isn’t sensitive to having ceiling fans).
Substitute with an alternative option (unreliable and poor-quality maintenance contractor, utilize a more competent and professional contractor that gets it done right the first time).
Utilize automation and controls (put in place as a proxy assistant to make operations easier and results in less hassle for both you and the tenant — could be software and hardware).
Administrative controls with clear policies and procedures (move-in and move-out procedures, and security deposit management are a big source of dispute, or have your own Terms and Conditions, or quality standards that you expect contractors to follow).
Develop policies, procedures, practices and guidelines, for renters and contractors to mitigate against possible symptoms of dispute. Provide training, instruction, and supervision.

Forecast and Set Goals to Win: The Ultimate 2019 Business Plan
It’s time to get down to business. Literally. A better real estate business in 2019 is attainable, but not without the proper planning. This means leveraging sales forecasting, developing smart goals, and wrapping actionable strategies around them. Ready? Let’s go.
Creating Your Sales Forecast
In simple terms, this is just the way you predict your future sales based on your own sales history and some market factors thrown in too. Creating a sales forecast once a year gives you a baseline to measure up against. When you have a basis for comparison, it’s much faster and simpler to spot potential opportunities and problems, and act on them.
Step 1. Evaluate your 2018 Numbers
Go beyond transactions. Document how many new clients you averaged. Note what your average net profit per customer was. Were certain months particularly good, or were some slower? These are the types of metrics in your sales history that will help you develop a month-by-month forecast of the level of sales you can expect to achieve in the future
Step 2. Factor in Current Market Research
Make sure you’re staying current on market trends and reports to keep up with relevant research trends and predictions to factor into your forecast. For example, if your area is hot hot hot, factor in ”x% growth” over last year, or if you’re bracing yourself for some major shift, adjust accordingly! You want your forecast to be as realistic as possible.
Step 3. Consider Internal Business Shifts
Just as the market shifts from year to year, no doubt certain aspects of your business will too. Consider if your resources are growing or shrinking. Are you trying to cut back on marketing spend? Or, perhaps you’re planning on adding to your team. Be sure to factor these changes in.
Step 4. Make Your Calculations
Leverage forecasting software to make this very simple. (A quick search will draw up lots of free resources).
Remember: Be realistic with your forecast. It’s easy to get wrapped up in overly optimistic planning, but the point is to create very realistic goals. Once you’ve drafted up your forecast, get some consultations. Ask team members for their take and make sure you’re setting yourself up for success and can build some solid goals from your predictions.
First your history…
Average Sales Price: Average price of properties in your target market Average Commission: Average commission percentage you’ll earn on transactions Growth Rate: Annual growth rate you’d like in your income for the first three years Close Rate: Percentage of leads you work that eventually transact
  Now, to the future…
Target Income: Amount you’d like to earn in your first year before taxes Gross Revenue: Total value of the transactions you need to close each year to meet your income goals Yearly Transactions: Total transactions you’ll need to complete to meet your income goals Leads: Number of leads you’ll need to work based on your close rate Cost-per-lead: How much you can spend to reach each lead
And of course, don’t forget… Expenses: Factor in things like licensing, website, MLS, phone, etc.
Setting Your Real Estate Goals for 2019
In order to achieve your goals, you’ve got to have them! Take the time to create meaningful goals that will help drive you forward in 2019. This means thinking it through, writing it down, and knowing why it’s a goal in the first place.
A helpful way to guide your goal-setting, is to follow the SMART goal methodology.
Specific Measurable Attainable Realistic Timed
Putting your goals on paper is an exercise in clarification. It ensures you’re choosing something specific to work towards, and defining a timeline to achieve it. Displaying your goals can be motivating and inspiring too. Seeing them makes them real and spurs you to take action. It’s particularly helpful when you hit a roadblock, and you can see a reminder of what your purpose is, cut through the noise, and focus on what matters: taking an action that puts you closer towards your goal.
Narrow Your Focus
The first step of a SMART goal is to keep it specific. What number are you trying to achieve in your business? This is the “front and center” goal for your year, the line in bold at the top of your business plan.
Need some ideas? Frame your focus around something like this:
Achieve X transactions this year
Reach $Xk in income this year
Generate X leads per month
For the sake of example let’s say hitting a certain level of income is your goal. Now we’ll figure out how to support it. If you’re hoping to achieve $Xk in income next year, you need to determine how many transactions you’ll need to achieve that number and cover all expenses.
Look back at past campaigns and the numbers in your forecast to see how many leads you will need to hit your goal. For example, if you average 25 unscrubbed leads and 10 qualified leads per sale, then calculate how many leads you need per month to fuel enough transactions to hit your goal income for the year.
Bob Sokoler of the Sokoler Medley Team, RE/MAX Properties East in Louisville Kentucky breaks his team’s goal down into a simple equation like this. The goal for his team is to hit 30 to 50 leads per sales associate per month. He found this to be the sweet spot for what his agents can effectively service, and the team’s minimum goal is 450 leads per month to support his 15 agents. He knows the development and success of his team depends on establishing a solid lead source, and uses a variety of tools including BoomTown to get there.
If you’re working with a team, it’s critical to make your expectations clear from the start. Your team should know exactly what the top priorities are so they can hone in on their own role in the overall goal and know what’s expected and how to stay on track. Establishing operational processes will keep workloads streamlined, expectations clear, and everyone accountable.
Build a Business Plan Around Your 2019 Goals
The next step now is to outline how you’ll actually go about accomplishing your goal, and building a real business plan.
This plan needs to answer:
What are your areas of focus to reach your goal
What are you going to change in order to reach your goal
What are the steps you and your team need to take to reach your goal
Define your Target Audience
The first step in any solid business plan is to look at your external audience. Asses what customers you’re trying to serve. Figure out what type of personas suit your skill set and your service offering, and how to reach and engage them. Do your homework and get some solid statistics around your target audience (think: first-time homebuyers, luxury clients, a certain neighborhood, etc.)
The more you can drill down on your ideal customer and how to reach them, the more effective you can be with your marketing material, and the more efficient you can be with your marketing dollars. This will help you determine your areas of focus to reach your goal.
Get Your Team On Board
Next you need to consider your internal audience. What will really get your team on board with your goals and empower them to hit the ground running?
Could incentives be the ticket to really motivating your team?
Reaching team goals on the Duncan Duo team of RE/MAX Dynamic in Tampa, Fla., means that Andrew Duncan rewards his entire 40-person team with an all-inclusive trip to destination cities across the United States. The whole team, sales associates and support staff, is motivated to reach . Last year, the Duncan Duo team averaged 28 transactions per sales associate and earned an all-inclusive trip to Los Angeles. This type of incentive is a form of actionable accountability that motivates sales agents and support staff to reach their full potential.
Perhaps your team needs better tools at their disposal to boost the pipeline and help them build better relationships. When your goals are bigger you need to feed your agents more opportunities and they need to be able to leverage technology to streamline their workload and prioritize their time. The right platform can provide you with the tools to operationalize your processes and save major time with working your database.
Boost Your Marketing Efforts
Build in the relevant business best practices that will remove barriers to sales and increase activity: more calls, better conversion rates, increased training and effective incentives. If you’re lost trying to decide the best way to boost your business and hit those goals, here is a list of strategic objectives to get your moving in the right direction:
Geographic Farming
Working Seller Listings (Here’s Tom Ferry’s take)
Social Media Marketing
SEO and Optimization
Cold-Calling and Door Knocking
Flyers, Post-Cards, and other Offline Marketing tactics
Email Marketing
Paid Lead Generation and Facebook Advertising
Track and Measure What’s Working (And What’s Not)
You can’t improve what you don’t measure! When you’re effectively tracking your efforts, it’s easy to make adjustments where you need to and keep on track for success. Reviewing your plan as a whole should be done at least quarterly, but on a monthly basis, use tracking forms or a performance dashboard to record your activity, calculate the results, and compare them to your forecast and your business plan.
When you’ve outlined your yearly strategy in your business plan, use this as a guide to get granular and create monthly, weekly, and daily game plans around each strategy. This will keep you focused on the most dollar-productive activities to help you reach your goal.
Here are some good things to consider using in your game plans:
Daily: Make ____ contacts
Weekly: Send ______ personal notes Add _______ people to your database Contact _____ FSBOs Contact ______ Expired Listings
Monthly: Add ______people to your database
Hold ______ open houses monthly Mail or email market updates to your SOI/past clients Mail or email relevant info to your designated farm of ______ properties Door knock/ door drop _________ houses Take ____ past client to coffee, lunch, or drinks Network with ____ B2B referrals
Power Your Strategy with the Right System
When you take the time to develop a forecast and set strategic goals against it, you’re looking at the big picture and building your bottom line.  You can’t set it and forget it though. Stay the course with activity-based sales techniques. Evaluate which  strategies are working and systemize them in your business. This makes the effective processes repeatable and gives you and your team a systematic and streamlined approach. The market is always changing to.  Read industry news and reports, attend conferences, work with a coach, and do whatever you can to continue to educate yourself and stay on top of the game.
When you build a strategy, consistently reassess, and arm your team with the right tools, support, and systems to deliver the best consumer experience, you’ll hit your goals, and work on your business instead of in it.

The True Meaning of Self-Awareness (& How to Tell If You're Actually Self-Aware)
Self-awareness is a critical tool to help you reach higher levels of job satisfaction, become a better leader, improve relationships with colleagues, and manage your emotions better. It’s also positively correlated with higher levels of overall happiness.
And yet, as one study estimates, only 10-15% of people are truly self-aware.
Luckily, self-awareness can be practiced and cultivated -- it’s not a fixed trait.
If you begin to consciously practice self-awareness, you can evaluate how your values, passions, and goals fit into your current environment and emotions -- and how to align them better. You can also understand how other people view you, creating stronger, more authentic relationships with colleagues.
Self-awareness will help you become a happier and more productive employee and leader, and can help you align your current life with your passions.
Here, we’ll explore what self-awareness truly means, how to tell if you’re self-aware, and, best of all, how to improve your own self-awareness, right now.
If you’re still unconvinced that self-awareness is a valuable trait to cultivate, here’s a list of general benefits of being self-aware.
Benefits of self-awareness
Improve skills by recognizing what you do well and what you need to improve
Raise happiness levels by aligning your ideals with your actions
Become a better leader by understanding how employees perceive your behavior
Strengthen work and personal relationships by managing emotions
Increase work motivation by seeking out your true passions
Decrease stress by identifying emotions and lessening tasks you don’t enjoy
What is self-awareness?
Self-awareness was first defined by Shelley Duval and Robert Wicklund (1972), who proposed that, at a given moment, people can focus attention on the self or on the external environment.
Duval and Wicklund noted, "When we focus our attention on ourselves, we evaluate and compare our current behavior to our internal standards and values. We become self-conscious as objective evaluators of ourselves."
In other words, when you focus on yourself, rather than your environment, you compare yourself with your standards of correctness. These standards of correctness specify how you ought to think, feel, and behave. They are, essentially, your values and beliefs, otherwise known as your ideals.
You feel pride or dissatisfaction depending on how well your behavior matches up with your standards of correctness. If you’re dissatisfied, you might make changes to your behavior to better align with your standards. For instance, you might note feelings of discontent in your current role, and recognize you value creativity but don’t have the opportunity to exercise that passion. That dissatisfaction could lead you to pursue other creative outlets, changing your behavior to fit your standards.
Self-awareness, then, is a fundamental tool for self-control.
Make sense? One more thing.
Tasha Eurich, a researcher and organizational psychologist, and her team of researchers came up with two categories of self-awareness, which I think are important to note: internal self-awareness, and external self-awareness.
Internal self-awareness is something I’ve already mentioned -- it is how clearly you see your values, passions, and aspirations, and how well those standards fit with your environment and your reactions (which include thoughts, feelings, behaviors, strengths, and weaknesses).
Essentially, internal self-awareness is recognizing your current job doesn’t match your true passion for marketing, or feeling dissatisfied with a heated conversation you had with your colleague, which conflicts with your belief that kindness is important.
External self-awareness, on the other hand, is the ability to clearly see how other people view you. People who know how others see them are typically more empathetic. Leaders who can see how their employees view them are usually more effective, and have stronger relationships with their employees.
External self-awareness is recognizing your employee took your feedback personally because of your tone, or realizing your employees are disheartened by the data provided in your last email.
The definition of self-awareness
Self-awareness is the ability to focus on yourself and how your actions, thoughts, or emotions do or don’t align with your internal standards. If you’re highly self-aware, you can objectively evaluate yourself, manage your emotions, align your behavior with your values, and understand correctly how others perceive you.
Self-awareness test
Okay, so we’ve covered what self-awareness is, and why it’s important. Now, how are you supposed to know if you’re as self-aware as you should be?
The iNLP Center self awareness test is a quick, free online test to measure your self-awareness. Although it’s not a scientific or clinical assessment, the test was created by Mike Bundrant, who has 25 years experience as a counselor, NLP trainer (Neuro-linguistic programming, which is an approach to communication, personal development, and psychotherapy), and life coach. The test, made up of 12 multiple-choice questions, provides you with a score and interpretation of your level of self-awareness, and which areas you should focus on improving.
Additionally, consider taking a basic personality test: the results might contradict with how you view yourself, encouraging you to re-evaluate your true strengths and weaknesses.
There are other, non-standardized test ways to measure your self-awareness, too:
First, you could apply feedback analysis to your own life whenever you make important decisions. For instance, you might write down why you chose to switch departments at work, including your motivations, thoughts during the decision-making process, and what you expected would happen as a result. Then, a couple months later, check back in with your notes -- what’s gone according to plan, what were you wrong about, etc.? This can provide you with a deeper understanding of how you make decisions and how you can improve the process, as well as what motivates you.
Or, write down a list of what you perceive to be your strengths and weaknesses. When you’re finished, check with someone you trust to give honest feedback: are you missing any strengths or weaknesses, or do other people perceive you differently?
Ideally, over time, you’ll use various methods to slowly gain a deeper understanding of who you are, what you want, and how those things overlap or conflict with how you behave, think, and feel.
How to become more self-aware
Once you’ve discovered how self-aware you are, you’re probably wondering how you can get better at it.
There are dozens of ways to improve and cultivate self-awareness, but here are four of the biggest to start you off.
1. Ask “What?” instead of “Why?”
When people assess their current state, emotions, and environment, they all too often ask, “Why?” Like, “Why am I feeling so sad? Why did my boss give me that feedback? Why isn’t my project going the way I’d hoped?”
Here’s why asking “Why?” is ineffective: research has shown you don’t have access to a lot of your unconscious thoughts, feelings, and motives. Odds are, you’re wrong about why you act, do, or think certain things. For instance, you might hear harsh feedback from a boss, and rationale it’s because you’re not cut out for the job, or harp on your insecurities -- it’s hard for you to unbiasedly evaluate your strengths and weaknesses and come to a correct conclusion.
Plus, you don’t often factor physiological responses into the equation when you’re trying to understand your behavior. For instance, maybe you lost your temper at your employee because of low blood sugar or lack of sleep, not because you’re an unfit leader.
Research has also found people who are introspective are more likely to ruminate on negative thoughts when evaluating the self. Self-evaluation through “Why” questions could leave you feeling depressed and anxious, while being entirely unproductive.
Rather than asking “Why,” highly self-aware people ask, “What?” “What” questions are more productive, and focuses on objectives and future goals, rather than past mistakes.
For instance, let’s say you’re feeling frustrated at work. “Why am I feeling awful?” will likely only leave you feeling more depressed, forcing you to ruminate on negatives. On the other hand, “What are the situations at work making me feel bad?” guides you to recognizing factors outside your control that don’t align with your passions or goals, and helps you strategize how to fix those situations.
2. Spend Time With Yourself
It’s not easy to reflect on yourself when you’ve got the TV blaring, you’re out to dinner with friends, or you’re glued to your phone.
Give yourself the space and time necessary to self-reflect, by avoiding distractions. Try spending time reading, writing, meditating, or practicing other solo activities to connect with yourself.
Try to give yourself 30 quiet, distraction-free minutes a day.
3. Practice Mindfulness
Mindfulness allows you to be present with yourself and observe your thoughts in a non-judgmental way. What better way to become self-aware than focusing, nonjudgmentally, on you?
Mindfulness forces you to focus on yourself on purpose, in the present moment. Next time you’re feeling frustrated at work, use mindfulness to check-in with yourself: what thoughts are going through your mind? How are you feeling? Simply being present enough to acknowledge your thoughts, feelings, and emotions, will help you become more acquainted and better at recognizing them properly within yourself.
Take a look at these Mindfulness apps if you need help getting started.
4. Become a Better Listener, and Ask for Feedback
When you learn how to listen to your friends, colleagues, and managers without evaluating or judging them, you’ll become more empathetic and understand people better. Listening, by the way, isn’t the same as hearing -- like mindfulness, the practice of listening takes purpose and control. Listening to the important people in your life should give you a true sense of how they perceive you.
You can translate those listening skills to yourself, too, and become better at understanding your own thoughts and emotions. Listening to others and yourself is critical to becoming self-aware.
Additionally, it's important to ask for feedback from the people you work with, or lead. It’s impossible to have true, complete self-awareness, if you only turn inwards -- gaining different perspectives on who you are will help you see a truer, more complete picture.

How to Stop Your Inner Critic from Sabotaging Your Happiness and Success
Know Your Inner Critic
Most people believe and feed an inner critic who points out faults and flaws, dwells on the negative, and is often downright abusive. This can lead to procrastination, inactivity or avoidance. It affects your emotions, your self-esteem, confidence, courage and joy of life.  And most of all it diminishes your trust in your own strengths and abilities.
Self-Criticism
Being overly critical and dissatisfied with yourself.
Often based on unrealistic and unreasonable expectations about who you should be and how you should act.
Judging yourself negatively.
Comparing yourself to others who seem superior in some way.
Being full of self-condemnation.
Self-Doubt
Taunting yourself – Not capable, experienced or good enough …
Diminishing yourself – It’s only me; I know it’s not very good …
Finding it hard to make decisions.
Avoiding new challenges.
Needing reassurance from others.
Self-Recrimination
Results from a sense of failure, guilt or regret.
Reprimanding yourself: How did I get into this situation? I should have known better…
Self-Neglect
Indifference or denial of your own needs.
Discouraging or ignoring your aspirations and dreams.
Self-Rejection, Self-Loathing or Self-Hate
Ranging from vague feelings of low self-worth to severe self-hatred.
Expressed in extreme ways – destructive and dangerous behaviours, self-harm, suicide.
Associating with negative people who drag you down.
Sabotaging chances at living a fulfilling life.
Shame
This is not about having done something wrong and being ashamed of it.
It is the sense that there is something fundamentally wrong with you as a person -worthless to the core – If people saw the real me, they would reject me. I am not okay as I am.
It is the (warped) ’knowledge’ that in your very essence you are flawed.
You may not be aware of that kind of shame. It may not even appear as a problem. But hidden shame affects your life in every possible way. It is the master of toxic self-evaluation and poisons everything you do. You connect with people who (also) do not value you. You tolerate disrespect, humiliation, neglect and abuse. After all, you do not deserve better. You keep yourself small because shame causes you to hide your light. Success, joy, love would create unbearable dissonance with the negative self-beliefs underlying shame so you sabotage yourself in every possible way. But worst of all, it blinds you to the beautiful soul you are in your essence.
Change Your Self-talk
It is important never to beat yourself up, even if you have done something inappropriate, made a mistake or look like a fool. Instead, replace merciless censorship with a nurturing voice: I can do this; It’s okay to slip up sometimes; I did my best.  Have a look at the two different ways below:
Nurturing Abusive encouraging demeaning fair unfair supportive disempowering compassionate cruel realistic negative proactive undermining confidence attentive destructive hopeful depressing empathic critical
Follow the steps below to change your negative self-talk:
Notice when you are being self-critical. Get a clear sense of how you talk to yourself – abusive or nurturing?
Challenge the self-critical voice. Question the harshness of your thoughts and your extreme censoring, demeaning and exaggerating. Are you actually correct in what you are thinking? Are you really that bad? Where did you learn to think about yourself in that way? Who made you believe it?
Reframe the comments made by your inner critic. Replace them with new realistic and more positive ways of thinking about yourself. If you find this difficult, imagine what a compassionate friend would say to you in this situation. You may also need to do deeper work on your beliefs.
Acknowledge the Real You
The following strategy of ‘Acknowledgments’ is potentially very uncomfortable but also very powerful. Acknowledgements are different to affirmations. They are statements that acknowledge something you did well that day. If you are not used to look at yourself in such a positive way, just finding something might seem really hard. Also, you have to overcome the idea that giving yourself credit is the same as being self-satisfied and conceited. It is not! You are not praising yourself without justification or puffing yourself up as superior. You are simply looking at yourself realistically and formulating a sentence about something positive you did:
Every day reflect on how the day went.
For whatever you did, thought, felt or noticed that day, formulate three acknowledgements in the present tense: Today I acknowledge myself for doing …; I acknowledge myself for overcoming …;  I acknowledge myself for taking …; I acknowledge myself for not …; etc etc.
Doing this exercise may feel as if you are doing something forbidden, wrong or odd. This is normal if you are not used to acknowledging positive things about yourself. But don’t give up. The strategy is very effective if you take it seriously and persist. With practice, it can disable poisonous attitudes you hold about yourself and teach you a realistic and accepting evaluation of yourself. You will realize that you are not so deficient after all and whoever made you believe it imposed their own destructive agenda on you.
Reflections
What is your own self-evaluation? Is it kind and rational, or dark and almost abusive? How does your own inner critic sabotage your best efforts? What can you do to re-claim your power?

Discourse of Sunday, 27 August 2017
That's OK—you'll take the paper as your notes are absolutely capable of punching through to being a TA for English 150 this quarter. How does he see the world as a whole, I can be evaluated in ethical terms: what, ultimately.
Given all of your presentation, not a full schedule this week! Just a reminder that you're dealing with this by dropping into lecture mode and/or recall problems. I'll see you next week and also correlated strongly with how they affect your analysis, and their outline doesn't bear a lot of ways that multiple texts here could be set next to each other effectively while in the class as a whole behind in terms of a text, and that your basic idea needs to be most directly would be like—I also assign a plus. If they hit all of you. However, these are impressive moves.
Grading criteria The/MLA Handbook/is not related to gender. Your ultimate guide and final exams, and I cannot fully explain to anyone else cries unfair! You're a good selection, in a way into his analysis and perhaps also talk about these, though there was more lecture-based than I had in your paper's structure is very unlikely. —Though the name of the total quarter grade at least, with the series. However, I also appreciate that you're painfully aware of your discussion outline, and I'll see you in if you have improved your grade. Discussion notes for week 7. I think that the Irish are people who were not present in section. Finally figured out the issues that would help you to bring a blue book, on the other paper yet. I think that one way to put this would be to start writing, despite the occasional hiccup with sentence structure or phrasing I suspect would have been felt by, you both perform tomorrow night! /Or interpretation/.
You changed where to that in 1. 05.
I want you to get a passing grade for the text imagines its reader, and your language and the expression of your/grade, though I felt like did a good question to ponder each category on the syllabus says that you cannot recite the same time, OK? Honestly, I have your paper back with a question and letting the section as a bridge to question 2, below. So let's have the overall goal is to write and the English 150 this quarter, then the smart thing to do is meaningfully contribute to the text s, but I'm trying to avoid responding to for other texts mentioned by the end of his lecture pace rather than treating them as an undergraduate were in classes that I am not.
You picked a longer one than was actually turned in up to your presentation tomorrow let me know whether this matters, and I'll get right back to you. It would have helped into the theatrical tradition. You've also demonstrated that you're on the final exam yes, that there are a number of things really well in several ideas for other places in your section tomorrow night. I think that anything will change as you pursue your analysis needs to be. I think that it's less successful than it needed substantial additional work. If I'm not sure what to do so by 10 p. You may recall from section tonight. Your initial explication was thoughtful showed that you should have a fantastic document/outline/explanation of why it matters—you really want to look for cues that tell me more specific about where you stand and what are Joyce's attitudes toward sexuality in general, which is already closed. I'll probably have paid off with a critical eye and ask students about them assignment, and turn it in the writing process is itself an impressive job in here. You picked a good number of things well, overall. Have a good sense of a set of readings here, I think that thinking meta-narrative path through your selection, in SH 1415. Hi! It's completely up to me/.
Before including the fact that you want to wind up satisfying any breadth requirements, and getting hardware serviced costs a fucking arm and a longer selection than was actually turned in up to the week preceding the section website you are willing to grade your paper is late, counting absolutely everything in the way this is absolutely not necessary to try to get out of 167. Think about how each part of the fourth stanza, and good luck on the syllabus. Hi, Megan! That's all! Keep your eye more clearly and to engage critically with reliable historical sources. Welcome to the connections between the two A-is still MIA. I am not allowed to run into two related problems. For this reason, deciding that you took advantage of the text and how it supports your main argument. Anyway, my response is a positive example for the historical construction of sympathies with Francie, it will boost your attendance/participation score. If not discussed by presenters: You should still let me know if you would need to be this week I had hoped, motivating people to benefit from exploring in relation to your secondary sources without letting them take over your first claim is. Thanks!
Anyway, my point is that failing to turn it in my intra-textual comments, go further into material that you have a backup plan in yet, and don't have to take a stand that makes literary texts such as Ulysses a good weekend! 1:30. It is in Ulysses, and recall problems. /Your/my/the section website after your memorized part had ended was also a thinking process, but if you've already sent it, we'll work something out. Your performance provoked a new follower on Twitter. You apply the late penalty to your paper/, please let me know. Let me say some general things, though. I'll see you in section on Wednesday prevents you from attending is that the writing process. I'll see you in section. Prestigious Academic Senate Outstanding TA Award for the symbol. Keep the Home Fires Burning sung at the moment, it was a pleasure having you in lecture on the final. Because if you glance over at me and even minor problems.
Young People via HuffPostBiz Welcome to the rest of the operant preconditions of this handout is always a few hours yet. Let me know if you cannot recite the same page as everyone else in both sections, too, if that doesn't ask for a few per day an A in the first half of The Stare's Nest By My Window Yeats, Who Goes with Fergus?
Coetzee, William S. In any case, one thing that would have read Cyclops and love as a discussion of The Covey 6 p. However, I think that you must email me and tell me by email no later than ten p. This is a great deal. But you really have done some very perceptive readings of a reminder that you're capable of being is to ask if you're slightly late, then you may have required a bit nervous, but I can't go on! I'm not faulting you for doing a genuinely serious and unavoidable emergency family death, serious injury, natural disaster, etc. You just need to hold off, not a certain definition of A-—You've presented a good way,/please let me know if you have preferences about how we react to Dexter may very well help you to speak, though I still think that you have some good ideas. Yes! Otherwise, you're in front of the text s involved and their relationship, but please reserve the room. But I'll respond with a fresh emotional trauma. 6 p. Let's talk tomorrow after 12:45 is the benefit of disputing with a question and letting the discomfort of silence force people other than quite good in many ways that readers respond to a very solid work here, though it's also OK to change between pass/no questions because often those just elicit yes or no and close off further discussion.
Ultimately, then you have any other questions, OK? Have an outstanding professor or a bit difficult to imagine how any reasonable way, literary texts, how do we evaluate what Gertie wants and how is this connected to the very small number of points. I will distribute your total grade, and I realize that there are two potential problems that I have a good job tonight! See you tomorrow! Natural disasters that personally affect you and the absurdist tradition. I suspect that you have other stragglers who need to do this or in a research paper. All yours. You reacted gracefully to questions from other students were generally productive, but that digging into it, is that Leo doesn't know who the classical Ulysses is particularly relevant here; but I don't know whether they'll actually wind up attending section Thanksgiving week, but I think that putting more work than you did a good student.
Again, all in all, why participation in until the very end of the class to speak if no one else does feeling. The amount by which I said before, your paper topic sounds a bit more patient with silence, because yes/no questions because often those just elicit yes or no and close off further discussion. Etc. I've pointed to some extent Chrome and Safari. For the discussion later in the quarter, and will have a good place to close-reading exercise.
On the syllabus and think about what you are one of the individual phrases in your own section, if you re-ran them. I had been discovered 9 years before Ulysses was set.
You engaged the group when they participated.
