God, I cannot overstate how much I DON'T want to hear what someone thinks I did wrong with a fic I posted in 2016, unless there is something genuinely harmful (no, having a m/m pairing with the "wrong" character topping does not count) that needs to be addressed.

What are people expecting? An apology? A draft of a rewrite?

An enthusiastic, kind ao3 comment can brighten a day. A nitpicky negative comment can RUIN a day, especially for someone like me that struggles with rejection sensitive dysphoria.

The ONLY benefit of criticizing a work that did not ask for critique is to make you feel better by announcing how the story failed to meet your standards. You're not helping the writer "become a better writer", you're not leaving criticism you're "entitled to" because you paid for the story, since it's free. You're making yourself feel good at the expense of the writer who spent hours on their story.

A couple years ago I got into an argument with someone who had left a multi-paragraph comment on a friend's (VERY POPULAR BTW) fic from several years ago, about how they felt the story had the characterizations all wrong, they didn't like the direction the plot went, etc. Then they were offended that they were being told their opinion wasn't welcome. So they dished it out and couldn't take it I guess. When the author blocked them, they came to MY account to comment on a fic to continue the argument. They complained that the author was a fragile snowflake and not recognizing that THEY were the fragile on if they were this defensive about their opinion that they "make no apologies for". (There's also a large time gap in the argument where they for some reason came back to continue bitching after nearly a YEAR??)

That's fan entitlement. That's having so much fic to choose from that you think it needs to be an author's problem when they don't meet your standards. That's you being so self centered that you think people owe it to you to know your opinion.

I'm an incredibly picky reader. I'll drop a story three paragraphs in because I don't like the "voice", or the characterization, etc... but that doesn't need to be the author's problem. They didn't do something wrong, their story just didn't gel with me.

Internalize this: SHARING YOUR OPINION IS NOT VITAL.

That was a phrase that helped me become (somewhat)less of an asshole on social media. Take a second to consider the benefit of the comment you're leaving. A kind word, an acknowledgement, an enthusiastic joyful rant about your favorite parts... that all benefits you and the author that put time and effort and sometimes even tears into their story. A list of things you think the author failed at? That benefits ONLY you. It makes YOU feel a little better for two seconds at the expense of someone else. There is no value to that unless you think you're the only person that matters.

So, you don't like a fic you just read? Vaguepost a rant on your social media. Jot your feelings down and then throw the page in the trash. Or... WRITE YOUR OWN FUCKING STORY AND POST IT.

I wanna know where people have lately gotten the audacity to leave comments on fanfics talking about how much the fanfic sucked and negatively critiquing an author's fic like it's a published book review.

It pisses me off cause I've seen authors abandoned or delete their fics because of this.

You're getting fanfics for FREE! No one asked for your opinion.

2024 Wrapped: Drarry & Rarepair

I think we all agree that 2024 was far from great in many aspects. For me, last year was full of ups and downs with some happy fulfilling moments, and some very sad, difficult, anxiety-inducing moments. I took a few breaks from fandom and barely read anything in the 2nd half of the year, but a tradition is a tradition so here’s my annual wrapped, even if a bit late :) this list comes full of gratitude for the fics that brought me joy during these not so joyful times. It is also a love letter to short form as I did not have the time and mental space to indulge long fic as I used to. Looking at it, I’m happy to see a nice mix of old faves and new authors whose work I’ve been binging as if there was no tomorrow. As usual, keep in mind that this selection is 100% subjective as it reflects my very own perverted needs personal tastes. I hope you enjoy these gems as much as I did, and I wish you a generous new year, full of kindness and hope ✨

Draco Malfoy, an omega. It was laughable until he was right in front of you, smelling like he was one shaky step from tripping into a heat.

my favourite odd job fic of 2024! what a fantastic concept to have a capable, smooth Draco rocking the hell out of those coveralls and making Harry (and all of us) salivate. this fic is a masterclass in short form: compelling characters (I love this disaster Harry so much), delicious build up and perfect pacing making their attraction feel genuine and organic.

Long Haul by @wolfpants (E, 9k)

The last person Harry expects to run into on a long haul flight to New York City is Draco Malfoy.

there’s something magically wistful about second chances and maybe that’s why I instantly fell in love with this beautiful love letter to Drarry and to NYC. I adore the gentle tone, the easy flirting and evocative atmosphere. the airplane smut is superb and there’s enough backstory to get you invested in their past without overshadowing the infinite possibilities the present is opening up for them right there. a beauty!

Spoiled Little Brat by @fastbrother (T, 9k)

Harry won’t stoop to Malfoy’s level. Really, he won’t. (He will.)

the best professors fic you’ll read today, this one pulled me right back into Drarry after summer break. what a delight of a fic - silly, fun, charming, with a perfect Hogwarts atmosphere that got me sad for not being there. their chemistry is unreal, with incredible banter - then deliberate teasing - and so much sexual tension it made me weak at the knees. oh, make sure to check the phenomenal art by @appleslightning!

When the Flood Comes by @academicdisasterfic (E, 10k)

Nine years on from the war, Auror Potter is upholding the Ministry of Magic's rule of law. Senior legal counsel Draco Malfoy is challenging it. And absolutely nothing is as it seems.

lawyer Draco in a suit is always a favourite, combined with a politics plot? sign me up 👏🏻 this is a beautiful, clever, thought-provoking story with a great premise perfectly executed within 10k (but it feels much longer), captivating characters, relevant discussions, detailed world building and be still my heart, the amount of yearning! a gorgeous break up/make up that slowly unravels their past and delivers just the right amount of heartbreak with impressive economy of words.

Knot Your Average Coworkers by @thecouchsofa (E, 22k)

Or: Harry makes a bunch of unintentional knotting jokes while an increasingly baffled Draco is driven insane.

I’ve read this almost a year ago and still remember laughing in delight from beginning to end. what a fun ride! my heart is soft for this cheeky, oblivious Harry with his cringey flirty banter and obsession with Draco’s secret 😂 their dynamic is perfect, light and silly and so very sweet. this fic is hilarious but also incredibly sexy and full of hot intimacy. I’m impressed by how easily Tee blends humour, fluff and heat so organically!

my first hoko fic is still my favourite, I got so emo over this one. can’t get enough of this sad, lost Harry navigating the growing pains of post-war life. he’s so young and vulnerable, my heart aches for him. I loved to watch him go from a desperate, co-dependent situationship with Charlie to a more mature and grounded relationship with Draco. touching and melancholy, this story stays with you for a while.

A child for Harry Potter is a miracle of magic. And it's the second act of Draco Malfoy's sorry little life.

another banger by the phenomenal peu, this is the perfect mix of amusing and touching with one of my all-time fave Dracos. the prose is incredible and engaging as per: vibrant, clever, full of personality and with a refreshing take on mpreg that got me kicking my feet in joy. the smooth, effortlessly funny dialogue is a masterpiece in itself, but ah! the sweetness :')

For Harry, it all starts on July 31, 1999 and ends on July 31, 2019. Twenty years of longing, love, and pain in no particular order.

I don’t usually go for unhappy endings but something about this fic lured me in and I felt completely changed after reading it. brace yourself for a quiet, heart-wrenching look into Harry and Draco’s situationship over the span of 20 years of longing and waiting. love the melancholy vibe and the complexity of an unreliable narrative. this story opened a hole inside my chest and stayed with me for a long, long time.

god knows how this fic is still so underrated because it’s easily on my top 3 of 2024: sexy, moving, thought-provoking, funny and so very romantic and entertaining. I wanna live inside this universe and learn everything about quirky artist Draco and cute smitten Harry getting all curious and hungry for him. their dynamics are captivating, light and fun until the tenderness hits you right in the face. vibrant world building, brilliant cast, perfect dialogue and decadent hot smut - this fic delivers absolutely everything and you need to go read it right now.

I've inhaled everything garage has written last year and it was hard to pick one for this list, but I knew it had to be this banger. fuck buddies my beloved! this is an immersive and satisfying ride and I love how their relationship slowly unfolds to the reader. seeing them so young and stupid was nostalgic, aching and bittersweet at once, but I wasn’t expecting to be so moved by the romance! a brilliant character study, full of tension and heart.

trust LQT to ruin me with this ship, which I so carefully avoid hoping to dodge the devastation. but it only takes James and Sirius sharing one brain cell and being all hot and wanton for each other and here I am, dead and buried. this has LQT's trademark of insanely hot smut dripping with angsty feels. the characters are so dear and full of heart, and I can’t handle the amount of desire, trust and fond familiarity they share.

Weasley flicks the light on. “I got off with a guy once, you know,” he says, casually, holding the torch up between his gloved fingers.

my favorite Dronarry of the year, this fic was such a unique experience! a masterclass in short form, as per sweet’s usual. such a delicious and expertly crafted foreplay, the mounting tension swallowed me whole and left me at the edge of my seat yearning for more. I need this flirty Ron in my bed life, jfc. the car sequence is one of the best executed scenes I’ve ever read, with such a distinct, sexy dream-like atmosphere. instant classic!

Three's a Crowd (But Four is a Party) by @kbrick (E, 7k) - Harry/Draco/Pansy/Blaise, endgame Drarry

Pansy and Draco have been together for ages. Kind of. They don't sleep together any more, but they do sleep with men together. It's complicated.

also known as the pwp that made me tear up with feels for Pansy & Draco, this is a beautiful and moving love letter to their friendship. I love the layers behind their co-dependency, it’s a really nuanced dynamic while also being a deliciously and self-indulgent poly smutty treat. the sex sequence is smoking hot and a feast for the eyes, with such sweet Drarry chemistry! beautiful and immensely satisfying from beginning to end.

Wield Me by @tackytigerfic (E, 10k) - Drarry + Teddy

A little story about learning to strike while the iron is hot.

I’ve already poured my heart out about this fic on a dedicated rec post but suffice to say this is the tenderest, most creative short I’ve read last year. the rich and detailed world building is absolutely jaw dropping, and all characters are so lovable and fascinating. I’m obsessed with pining blacksmith Draco, and very impressed by how Tacky successfully includes my beloved Teddy in the equation while keeping this a legit (and very much romantic!) Drarry love story. so smooth, so moving. witchcraft

the gasp of utter delight I let out with every citrus fic this year! brilliant time travel concept perfectly executed, I’m still in awe of how much story and character development citrus was able to convey under 15k. sexy, intriguing, slightly melancholy with a clever twist and a hopeful open ending that took the story to another level and made me shake in satisfaction. easily on my top 3 works from last year’s Dronarry Fest!

yep, this is the Seinfeld AU I didn’t know I needed! this fic is so incredibly funny, original and engaging - a brilliant homage to the show’s silly, chaotic ecosystem and cleverly adapted to incorporate elements from the HP universe. I just couldn’t decide between laughing my ass off at the unique brand of humor, falling in love with this sweet Harry or getting all hot and bothered for the Dronarry sexual tension omg

Worth a Thousand Words by @fluxweeed (E, 18k) - Dron

TIL wizards in Britain can avoid ward duty on the grounds of homosexuality. To avoid any false applications, wizards applying for this exemption must provide multiple pictures of themselves receiving anal intercourse with a clearly visible face.

a recent Dron fave, this sexy af and delightful fic translates the ship's essence perfectly: hilarious, scorching hot and a bit unhinged. the absurd premise serves the hottest and most entertaining "fuck first, talk later" trope with the right amount of sass, horny and sweet pining. the fic that introduced me to El’s writing - my new age gap champion - had me on the floor just a few paragraphs in. this masterpiece covers everything that make this ship deliciously dirtybadwrong: Harry’s sweet longing, Sirius’s spiraling want and guilt clashing with the desire to give Harry everything he wants, the constant grasp for some control while toeing the line that gets blurred, then completely obliterated. exquisite build up and scorching sex scenes, so heated and satisfying!

A/N: Hehehe, I’ve been planning on making some 18+ headcanons for the Bayverse boys, but wanted to focus on the more untouched areas of my masterlist first. Mikey never meant to be hurtful, he only tried to be funny, relying much on shock humor at times. Mikey is not the type to let his sex life get stuck in a routine. In his opinion, a predictive sex life is as good as a dead one. He found new positions and dynamics very exciting, and it was often the excitement that he found very arousing. Couple that with a beautiful partner like you, who Mikey loved dearly, and you suddenly have wild and exciting love making. Sex between you and Mikey never felt boring. Here it is, the final Watcher viewcounts post I plan to make.

While Watcher is staying on YouTube, with a portion of their audience watching their videos only on WatcherTV (like me), tracking viewcounts no longer feels like it’s something that is worth keeping up with week to week like I’ve been doing for the past five (!) years. Also, at this point, there are less things to be learned from this kind of weekly stat-keeping and I am a bit worn-out about it. I don’t take every video’s numbers every week or anything, but it’s still a bit of a chore, especially now that I’m at a job where it’s a bit harder to do every Monday.

Here is a hodgepodge of information I’ve gleaned from doing this:

I would say that views are a bit down since the WatcherTV announcement, but first of all, lots of people (myself included) do not watch them on YouTube at all anymore but still watch them on the streamer, so that has to account for some of that loss. Of course, people deciding they hated Watcher would also account for some of it, but it’s really not a dire fall-off or anything especially for Ghost Files.

The only thing that really did quite badly on YT after the streamer announcement was Weird and/or Wonderful World, which is distressing to me on every single level. That show is so good and you can tell it meant so much to them to make something so joyful after the mess that was April 2024. I hope that the streamer means it can continue to return, even if it’s not every year.

Steven’s food videos behaved completely differently than everything else on the Watcher channel. If that’s because they starred Steven or because they were food videos, I can’t say, but they were often the only videos that could really gain steam weeks after release. The Shane&Ryan videos pretty much always peaked the first week, maybe the first two weeks, but that has never been a guarantee with the food videos. Even just this year, the spicy food episode of Travel Season jumped around 400k views in its 4th week.

Knowing this, the revelation that Watcher is going to create a separate YouTube channel for their food videos (starring Steven and Andrew) does not surprise me in the slightest. There’s obviously something different about the Almighty Algorithm when it comes to food and cooking (which is probably why Buzzfeed had like 3 different food channels) so I’m all for them taking advantage of that. (and hopefully keeping Steven safe from nasty assholes)

I will probably keep an eye on that channel tbh, but not in the same way I did for Watcher proper. We’ll see.

The highest viewed video on Watcher’s YouTube is Ghost Files: Waverly Hills with 8.9 million views

Ironically, the video that got the best opening weekend ever was their Goodbye Youtube video with 1.728 million views by Monday morning.

Watcher lost around 100k subscribers during The Discourse this past spring but they are back up and beyond that now. As of today, January 6, 2025, they have 2.89 million subs and 450 videos.

The total views is 469,381,807. The average view per video is 1,043,070. (I assume this includes all the “shorts” as well, for whatever that’s worth)

I don’t have to do the math to tell you that Ghost Files has the highest average viewcount. It’s by far been the most consistent show for them. The least consistent is probably still Top 5 Beatdown, which does still have the distinction of being the first Watcher video to hit 1 million views. (Top 5 Fast Food Chains)

At that moment, your friends erupted into playful teasing. "Just confess already, Riki!" Jake shouted, laughter echoing around the room. Your cheeks flushed as you fought to contain your smile.

Ni-ki's face turned crimson under the teasing barrage from your friends. He hadn’t expected things to escalate so quickly and felt a delightful mix of nerves and excitement. "Guys, it's not like that," he protested, though his voice cracked slightly, betraying his composure.

"Oh come on! We see the way you look at her." Sunoo chimed in, adding fuel to the fire.

Ni-ki shot them a glare but couldn’t hide the truth any longer—deep down, he knew they were right about his feelings for you.

You giggled softly, warmth spreading across your cheeks. "So... that's it? Nothing else?"

His eyes widened at your question; his heart raced in response. Looking deep into your eyes, he felt something shift within him.

"No, it's not just that," he murmured softly. "I... I really like you. I've liked you for a long time but didn’t know how to say it."

"OH HE DID IT! HE JUST SAID IT!" one friend screamed as the room erupted into chaos—giggles and playful jabs filled the air. Jake leaned over to Riki and whispered urgently, "Ask her if you guys can start dating!"

Riki’s face turned an even deeper shade of red as he covered his face with his hands while laughter erupted around him. He shot Jake an incredulous glare but knew what he had to do.

Taking a deep breath to steady himself, Riki uncovered his face and turned to you amidst the joyful pandemonium.

"Hey... umm... would you... I was wondering if..." He hesitated for a moment before finding his courage. "Do you want to start dating?"

In that instant, everyone leapt from their seats in sheer jubilation—after years of unspoken feelings between you two, something monumental was finally happening. Your heart soared as you blushed profusely; with a beaming smile of affirmation, you nodded.

Riki’s eyes widened in disbelief as your smile lit up the room; his heart skipped a beat at your response.

Before he could fully process what was happening, your friends erupted into cheers and squeals of delight: "It's happening!" and "Finally!" Riki chuckled, both amused and slightly embarrassed by their exuberance.

B-Buck is viscerally, near painfully aware of how new this is, how different. Not strange exactly, but unknown. He’s just started skimming the surface of what kissing Eddie is like. And he never really thought he’d be here in this position, both figuratively and literally.

E-Except, y’know, how it actually is all of that and more because Buck is a goddamn liar and is about constantly breaking open with the intensity of every emotion that seems to build into a crescendo in his blood before spilling out into the world, unstoppable and loud.

S-Should he have endured the bite? Stayed put and let Eddie sink into his flesh hard enough to bruise and break skin? Buck wanted to, but–

T-Then everything went back to normal. Except for how horribly not normal it was, but neither of them were owning up to that, no way. Buck was lucky to get what he did and he wasn’t gonna push it, not with Eddie.

WATER

W-Well, he firmly dug this grave so he might as well get comfortable in it.

A-A misplaced, twisted pride that Buck can’t discard. Because Eddie rarely allows such a thing from anyone, but he allowed it with Buck. Took it from Buck. Gave it to Buck.

T-Truly sick. Rotting away on the inside. Indulging in these images of Eddie and himself, swallowing down a poison that tastes so sweet but has a bitter, stinging edge that eats eats eats away at the rest of him.

E-Eddie is backed up against the counter, a long, lean, strong line of tension held between Buck’s palms, arched up into Buck like he’s something to embrace, to reach out for, to submerge into.

R-...yeah i got nothing

WAIT

W-Wet. Hot silk that runs over Buck’s teeth and flicks across the roof of his  mouth and sucks on his own tongue. Somehow connected to that spot hidden in the core of him, between his stomach and pelvis. The one where tension coils tightly The one where glitter bubbles and sparkles. The one where every sensation in his body gathers in preparation of exploding outward.

A-Already his head is spinning. Already he is lost. Already he wants more, and is afraid he won’t get it.

I-It has an effect on Eddie though, who whimpers as if gloriously wounded and takes Buck’s mouth again. Kissing him like it’s a battle, like it’s a claim, like it’s a piece of joy he can’t help but chase.

T-Teeth. Eddie’s teeth, biting into Buck’s bottom lip. Latching on and pulling, gentle but fierce. Then suction. Another bite. Tiny nibbles that are cute and soft.

CHOKE

C-Cozy and thrilling. White-hot and velvety. Spearing through every vein and across every nerve. Swelling up inside of him so much he’s sure he is gonna burst, all the pulpy mess of him going everywhere and soaking Eddie to the bone.

H-His heart jumping and dancing, acting like it’s trying to escape and curl up in the center of Eddie’s palm. He wonders if Eddie would take it. Isn’t sure what it means that he thinks Eddie would, careful as he is with any love that’s given to him.

O-Of course they were headed here again. Buck has wanted it, sure. Buck has doubted it would happen again, definitely. Even then, it still makes sense. Where else is there for them to go?

K-Kisses him again. Stops again. Bastard.

E-Eddie hums. Sighs. Sweet and pliant and open. Then he puts a gentle, open hand against Buck’s throat, pushing him away.

the primary reason that we have nosferatu (1922) is because bram stoker’s widow told murneau “no” to a dracula adaptation

with that in mind, we only have nosferatu (2024) because upon the discovery that the ORIGINAL nosferatu was basically dracula with the serial numbers scratched off, and the judge declared that all copies and negatives, too, had to be destroyed, some people caught wind of this and preserved copies in secret (all hail media piracy??)

had those copies not been preserved, nosferatu would likely have been a completely or almost completely forgotten horror film of the silent era

and for that matter, we only have nosferatu (2024) because robert eggers was so obsessed with the original to the point of writing a script and putting on a high school production of the original and still holding fast to adapting/reimagining it when he started film making

half the time I get simultaneously all emotional over this movie, over orlok, over everything that it all means to me in all its complexities, it’s due to some combination of these facts

i should think of happier headcanons. bj is a sad character without a lot of room for any sort of joy in canon, so it's very easy to get stuck on those sad things (and tbh, they are the meatiest part of his character, bc everything about him is so steeped in misfortune), but i would like to explore his joys more often than i do.

Wait, you guys actually don't relish every second of the time your friends spare just to be in your company? Do you actually see friendship as a means for a destination instead of a joyful voyage you have been blissfully bestowed by the people who genuinely believe you to be worth their time? I thought it was a joke.

It's like we all collectively forgot as a society that friendship and just connection in general takes effort. Even if you meet someone you immediately click with, it takes hanging out about 20 times (!) to become friends. And guess what, some of those 20 meetings might be awkward or unimpressive.

We all want to reap the benefits (having a friend circle, having a partner, getting married) without doing the work (going to events, interacting with people, learning to handle conflict maturely, dating). Myself included. If I could, I'd never leave the house or go on another mediocre date again... except, that's part of the process.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, the cure to the loneliness epidemic is touching some grass and building tolerance for tedious in-person interactions.
