Sol Mates

With my powers as the Full Metal Ale-Chemist I'm making Slumbrew's Happy Sol and Meyrin Hawke from Gundam Seed Destiny, soulmates.  They're both perfectly capable characters with a bit of an identity crisis ... solid, but easily lost in a crowded cast.  They're also worth a closer look.

Happy Sol is a Slumbrew, core brew.  It's a wheat ale, infused with the flavor of orange peel, coriander, honey, and the juice of blood oranges. It's unfiltered and looks absolutely spectacular in a pint glass.  A hazy, yellow-orange, with a pleasing white head.  It checks in with an ABV of 5.5, so if not a kick, you'll feel a nudge after drinking a few.  You'd expect a citrus taste with the ingredients, but it's pretty muted.  I get much more of a yeast-forward sensation.  It's more Belgium than Bavaria.  Also, for a beer perfect for the summer season, the hop signature is written in soft graphite not fountain pen.

So what does our friend Sol have in common with Meyrin?  Well, Meyrin is a supporting character in the huge Gundam world.  Her sister Lunamaria has a more prominent role, but you have to know you're Gundam to know what these characters are all about.  The craft beer world is a lot like the Gundam universe ... massive, and crowded at the same time. Happy Sol and Meyrin have to struggle to get noticed.

Here's the thing though.  Meyrin is kind, capable and resourceful. Happy Sol is lovingly made by an indie brewery that really cares about doing it right. In fact, within a few months the Somerville Brewing Company will have its own facility and taproom on their home turf.  A huge accomplishment. Their core line of brews have only been out since 2011.

So if you're looking at a 4 pack of Happy Sol in your craft brew store and are wondering it it's worth dropping a Hamilton, there's no instant answer. Yes, if you're a fan of quality craft.  No, if you're expecting something incredibly memorable.  I wanted Happy Sol to make a statement.  What I got was more of a suggestion.

As for Meyrin?  Well, they're not going to build an anime around her. On the other hand, she's one of my favorite anime tchotchke's, straight from an indie geek store in Rochester, New York.  We're kinda soulmates too,
