Seeds LP #CVReview

The cover art for this LP always captivated me and I was not disappointed when I finally took "Seeds" for a spin. Funk and soul decorate Muldow's "Seeds" as her voice expands and her vocals are layered along with her range to give her her own backing trio like she's a one woman Emotions or one of those Motown groups of old. Under her vocals are Madlib! with funk and jazz samples cut throughout the records, intersped and blended with tiny record scratches here and there as Mudlow covers topics that range from copulation, identity, mythological deities to deifying the self and those around onself, and political ideologies. This is all jam packed in a short mix that could honestly have been included in The Madlib! Medicine Show series if Guilty Simpson's lyrics could have made it, and I say that with the utmost respect. "Best Love" has to be my favorite joint on this. Sounds like if Donna Summer put on a beret. I love the way the wind samples get cut off and the small record scratches over the lush disco tinged instrumental.

Reminds of the first time I heard Prince Paul's "The Night My Girlfriend Left Me" or Fleetwood Mac's "You Make Loving Fun". I place this record in that pantheon off the first spin. Muldrow has no need to worry by the way - I'll be sure to Google Kali Yuga. Though chances are, I'ma search through Brave.

Declaime ft. Aloe Blacc ‘Violet Sky’ (eOne)

Declaime (aka Dudley Perkins) started making music with his native Oxnard, California crew consisting of Madlib, Kankick, Wildchild & DJ Romes, when he was originally known as D-Loc in 1992.

After serving a term with the Navy, Dudley Perkins returned to the US and began recording with his longtime friend Madlib, appearing on the Alkaholiks album Coast to Coast as well as The Lootpacks' debut album Soundpieces.

Described as a mix of Public Enemy, the 'old school' Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, and KRS-One, Declaime has been instrumental in helping pioneer much of the underground sound of the West Coast, with albums such as the critically acclaimed Ansoitisaid, Conversations with Dudley, Illmindmuzik, and Astormiscomin.

In 2002, after hearing a demo version of the jazzy number "Flowers," Stones Throw Records founder Peanut Butter Wolf asked Declaime to do a singing album entirely produced by Madlib under the moniker of his government name, Dudley Perkins. Dudley and Madlib would go on to record two critically acclaimed albums ‘Lil’ Light’ and ‘Expressions (2012 A.U.).’

In 2009, Declaime started his own label SomeOthaShip Connect with his partner Georgia Anne Muldrow. Declaime has since gone on to collaborate with music’s heavyweights such as Flying Lotus, Hudson Mohawke, Black Milk, and more.

Much of Declaime's influence can be heard in the works of rap's underground elite such as today's superstars like Kendrick Lamar and chance the rapper. Both Declaime and Georgia continue to produce music under their own imprint and tour the world.

Declaime now returns with his new album ‘Young Spirit’ that features production from Georgia Anne Muldrow and Madlib, and guest features from Aloe Blacc, Blu, Saul Williams, and more.

Former pro-football player and Los Angeles-based emcee Ayun Bassa (of Georgia Anne Muldrow’s SomeOthaShip Connect) shares the visual for his abstract Wun Two-produced single “Stains” today.

Directed by Brandon Stanciell and shot by Luis Salgado, the video is “a one shot prelude into my emotions, and just me being handsome”, says Bassa.
