Baldur's Cats 3
Ever had a cursed thought that you had to share so others could suffer just as you have? Well, settle in because you need to suffer with me. We should mash up Baldur's Gate and Cats.
Withers is quite blatantly Old Deuteronomy, that is for sure. Old, wise, and a bit of an oddity.
Tav is Victoria. Enough said there.
Gale was easy enough to line up with none other than the magical mister Mistoffelees.
Who has two sides to her like Jenyanydots? None other than Shadowheart.
This might be a bit controvertial but once Lae'zel abandons Vlaakith, she does have a bit of a Grizabella moment.
Rum Tum Tugger is a curious cat, so is Astarion. No pleasing some, right?
Wyll so badly wants to be important but independent. Such a shame he's tied to Mizora's whims, much like Skimbleshanks marches to the order of the train's timetable.
Munkustrap and Halsin are kindred spirits.
Does Karlach have Bustopher Jones' jollity? And a hunger but maybe for something a bit different ;)
Though he may not be ginger like Macavity, Gortash certainly is like him in many other ways.
Ketheric Throm is Growltiger.
But who are Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer, I hear you ask. None other than Orin and Durge.

Coda (Ethan x MC)
Book: Open Heart 3, Chapter 7 Pairing: Dr Ethan Ramsey x F!MC (Dr Noelle Valentine) Word Count: 3.1k Rating: 18+ (NSFW) Summary: Things got heated between Dr Ramsey and Dr Valentine during Bloomâs event. Will they finish what theyâve started?
Warning: This fic contains adult content, donât read if youâre a minor.
A/N: Happy Easter, folks! So, letâs pretend this horror of a dress (which, letâs be honest, even Bloomâs PA wouldnât wear) never happened. Also, this is my first time ever publishing NSFW fic, so please be understanding đ That being said, I always appreciate feedback and am forever grateful for all of you, because you help me grow đ
Huge shoutout to Bree @jamespotterthefirst who was so lovely to pre-read it and actually encouraged me to post, girl you are golden and I just cannot thank you enough! We are all so lucky to have you đđźđđźđđźđ
Even though he was trying to be sensible about this, every molecule of sense left him during his left palmâs chance encounter with Noelle Valentineâs bare thigh.
But has anything about their touching bodies ever been truly accidental?
Although, if he was honest, this was just the culmination point.
His rational mindâs death by a thousand cuts.
It all started when she entered the premises of the venue in her provocative dress and he had to blink rapidly a few times, thinking that his eyes were deceiving him, breath trapped in his throat.
Cut.
Her every step gracious and light, as if sheâs been the human embodiment of a wood nymph.
As if sheâs stolen the world's entire allure.
Cut.
Her silky waves, cascading like a waterfall - he wanted to dive into them, lose himself in them.
Drown in them.
Cut.
She was a prodigy, a goddess descending from mount Olympus, who, for some mysterious reason, decided to grace the mortals with her overwhelming presence.
Some guests were standing agape, the others smiled wide and showered her with rain of compliments; a few people had tiny lightnings of jealousy flickering in their eyes.
But no one was left indifferent by her grand entrance.
Strangely, Ethan didnât feel jealousy.
In fact, he couldnât be more proud.
His eyes, like x-rays, have relentlessly been reminding him of the perfect shapes hiding under the layers of the sophisticated, silky material. In this regard, he envied everyone else. Unlike him, imagination was all they had.
He knew. He touched. He teased. He tasted. He caressed.
Sometimes, ignorance was truly a bliss.
Today, ignorance was certainly not going to help him get through this evening.
* * * * * *
He almost lost it on the balcony.
Then, the sudden appearance of musicians interrupted them.
He wasnât startled.
He was angry.
Freaking Bloom and his jazz band, he thought to himself. How on earth was he constantly able to rain on Ethanâs parade, even when they werenât physically in the same room?
Noelleâs pearly laugh dissipated all thoughts in an instant, her impossibly beautiful face now turned to him. Entwining their hands, Ethan knew he had no choice but to play along.
Inside, he was laughing out of the other side of his mouth.
They were coming back to the room full of buffoons and right now her presence was as comforting as it was driving him further into insanity.
Before he was even able to sit down, someone has already slipped a drink into his hand and when Ethan was ready to sigh and curse the fate that sent him to Bloomâs 4th circle of hell*, a sudden realisation struck him.
This evening wasnât lost yet.
In fact, it wasnât lost at all.
And as he was thinking, a small smile ran past his lips.
The answer was right there in front of him.
* * * * * *
âDr Ramsey, youâre still here?â Ethan had heard the unwanted and all too loud voice, followed by an even more unwanted pat on the back, accompanied by his nemesisâ reddened face and alcohol breath.
He plastered a fake smile, mustering the remains of politeness.
âYou didnât strike me as a party type, I thought youâd be making excuses a long time ago.â Leland grinned like a Cheshire cat. For a second, an outsider could have almost thought these two hold each other in high regard.
Almost being the key word.
âThis is the most pleasant surprise.â Leland continued. âYou see, I am rarely wrong, so itâs one of these moments when not only am I wrong, but also being wrong actually makes me happy.â He laughed as if heâs just delivered the best punch line in the world.
âWell, we are representing the hospital after all and I wouldnât be too much of an example if I left before the rest of my team.â Ethan put on his best charming smile, not without a superhuman effort.
You donât play the game, you play the opponent, he reminded himself.
âIt looks like we are finally agreeing on something, doctor.â A sleazy smile ran past his lips, as he left to mingle with another circle. Inside, Ethan shuddered. There was just something about Bloom that didnât add up and he was yet to figure what it was⌠but now his focus shifted to something else entirely.
Just like he predicted (or diagnosed, if you will) with every sip, every passing minute, the guests were falling deeper and deeper into inebriation - the excellent staff made sure that every time someone emptied their glass, a new dose of liquid happiness was ready for them. Dr Ramsey knew this must have been Bloomâs doing.
They may have had money and resources but during these events, they were like wild animals held captive and then suddenly let loose. Their problem was that they thought money could pay for everything, but it certainly couldnât buy back dignity, redeem bad manners and erase terrible first impressions.
Tonight, he will use this flawed logic to his advantage.
* * * * * *
Noelle was sitting across the table, not even trying to hide anymore that whatever the tech moguls were trying to sell, she wasnât buying.
Neither their fancy apps nor their bullshit.
Ethan finished yet another glass of scotch and stood up, his height towering over everyone else at the table.
âWell, itâs about time I was moving. Thank you for a very⌠revelatory evening, gentlemen.â The other table occupiers didnât even pay too much attention and murmured something, shifting their focus back to the beautiful female doctor. âDr Valentine, can I offer you a ride home? That is, if you were planning to leave soonâŚâ
âThat would be great, thank you, Dr Ramsey.â If her eyes could speak up, they would have definitely thanked him for throwing her a lifebelt.
âFantastic, meet me outside in 10 minutes then? I haveâŚone more business to attend to beforehand.â
She wasnât exactly sure what it was â the look, the pause between words, the accentuation - but something told her that whatever business he meant, she was very much a part of it.
Her suspicion has soon turned out to be justified, as his tall figure wandered off and disappeared around the corner.
A corner he had absolutely no reason to disappear around.
The younger doctor waited a minute before making her excuses and assuring her companions that a future partnership with Edenbrook couldnât look any brighter, Noelle turned around and followed the man in black suit.
Walking as fast as her hurting feet and long gown were allowing her, Noelle entered a long corridor at the back of the fancy restaurant and had to admit that even this place, which must have simply led to different utility rooms, looked spectacular and stylish. Almost like those fairytale corridors, which lead to other dimensions.
But only if a voice summons you and guides you there.
Just as the thought popped into her head, a firm grip tightened around one of her wrists, making her jump.
When she turned around, his index finger was on his lips in a clear message.
Quiet.
They only made a couple of steps before he cautiously opened the door and rushed her into a room. It looked like a sophisticated pantry or a wine cellar and she thought the stock must have been worth more than her annual salary.
The room was dark, bar for the little window, which wasnât much helpful with providing the light, given that the world outside was hugged by the arms of the night.
âEthan, whatâs goiââ She never had a chance to finish the sentence, before he took her breath away with his lips, not for the first time this evening. He didnât stop there, pushing her towards the counter, like a famished animal backing its victim into the corner.
âYou said youâll be looking for an encore, didnât you?â She was trying to accustom her sight to the darkness, the gleam in the blue of his eyes her only reference point.
âAlthough, if Iâm not mistaken and my opera knowledge is still sharp, I think coda** is actually the word youâre looking for.â
She stilled, a shiver running through her spine, the electric feel both hot and cold. An audible swallow filled the silence that lingered after his words, not for long as he continued his monologue.
âAnd Iâm sorry, Dr Valentine, but Iâm not a patient man todayâŚIâve exhausted all my patience on senseless endeavours this evening.â Almost as if to prove the sincerity of his words, he started moving towards her, his every gesture deliberate; there was no space for randomness.
Every word hit her like a wrecking ball, her remaining senses overkeen. She couldnât rely on her eyes anymore and her hearing, smell and touch suddenly became heavily heightened, almost supernatural.
She couldnât reflect on this for too long though, as he backed her further towards the counter, blocking her moves.
âH-how⌠how do you know no oneâs gonna come in?â
Even in the dark, she could see the corners of his lips going up, in a smile which wasnât affectionate. It was dark, almost sinister.
And hot as hell.
Ethan leaned into her and dropped his voice even lower than she thought was humanly possible, whispering straight into her ear.
âI donât, but⌠my diagnostic instincts rarely fail me, Noelle Valentine. Plus⌠thatâs a part of the thrill, isnât it?â He paused for a second to gloat upon the effect his ministrations had on her. Dr Ramsey enjoyed controlling the situation - more than heâd care to admit.
âLook me in the eye and tell me you havenât fantasised of this, of losing yourself in me completely⌠except you couldnât, because of a tiny detail, a stubborn question in your pretty head⌠what if someone walks in on us? What if it happens when you are overwhelmed by pure ecstasy, knowing there is no coming back, that the only way is forwardâŚâ
Ethan knew immediately that these words hit the jackpot. If she wasnât before, she was definitely shaking now, her treacherous body betraying her in all ways possible.
Thatâs how she knew all these months ago. Maybe her mind could, but her body could never lie to Ethan Freaking Ramsey.
Ethanâs hands started roaming her body, discovering his favourite promised land, as if he had not been touching her on that balcony earlier, as if heâd never touched her before.
Because for him, every time with her was first and last. And he hoped things would always feel this way.
âWho are you and what have you done to Ethan Ramsey?â
She couldnât see the smirk that appeared on his painfully handsome face.
âIf I were you, Iâd be more worried about whatâs to be done to you, Dr Valentine.â
With this, he lifted her up by grabbing her ass and sat her on the counter, pressing her back against the cold wall, which felt strangely warm against her body.
Or not so strangely, given there was a fire inside of her.
Securing her neck with his palm, he pulled her closer for a long, wet and greedy kiss, the obscene sounds of their mouths filling the otherwise silent space.
âTouch me.â A silent plea fell off her lips, her voice a quiet sob. Usually, heâd enjoy teasing her forever, playing little games, checking how far she would go to get what she wanted. But not tonight.
Tonight⌠heâs gonna give her exactly what she wants.
Because he wants it even more.
His middle and index finger slipped past the silky material of the dress and the band of her underwear. Noelle parted her lips slightly and drew a shallow breath, waiting in anticipation. Her wish was granted a couple of seconds later, when he ran up and down her folds, eliciting a small, guttural moan, which he was sure would forever be his favourite sound in the whole world.
Before she was even able to get used to the feeling, he pushed 2 digits into her without warning, making her eyes wide with amazement. But the movement stilled a second later. Maybe he couldnât not tease her after all.
âPlease.â The sound that came out of her was almost inaudible, yet extremely high pitched. Even if he tried, Ethan simply didnât know the words that could come close to describing what these reactions were doing to him.
âYou know I will give you the world⌠I will give you anything you want, Noelle. You just need to tell me what it is that you desire.â
She didnât know what was the biggest turn on - his sultry voice dripping with desire, the feeling of his digits inside her or the well thought out choice of words. But it gave her an answer immediately.
âFuck me with your fingers, Ethan.â
There was something shy and yet confident about the way she said it, he couldnât explain it. Whatever it was, it made him even harder, which, at this point he thought wasnât humanly possible. Although he was painfully aware of his own desire, he couldnât rid neither her nor himself of the pleasure of watching her come undone on his fingers.
âAs you wish, my naughty girl.â
His fingers started moving in come-hither motion, first slowly and teasingly. Just when she opened her mouth to beg him again, his thumb circled her swollen clit and pressed the sensitive bundle of nerves with precision, sending her mind into overdrive. She had to bite her own shoulder to suppress what she was sure would turn into a scream.
âFuck⌠yes, right there.â She was an incoherent mess, while his fingers curved and touched places that made her eyes roll. âFaster, Ethan.â She commanded weakly as his fingers picked up the face, going in and out of her furiously.
She was pleading and moaning for god knows what and her hands were desperate to grip something, just anything.
Soon, he knew as well as she did that the peak was close, for her body kept moving and shaking on its own accord.
âIâmâŚthisâŚyouâŚâ She cried, making even less sense than before.
âI know. Let go⌠let go now, Noelle. I know you needed this so much. Come for me now, baby.â
Sinking her teeth, this time in his shoulder, and tightening her grip on him, Noelle clenched around his fingers, the feeling so arousing that he thought heâs going to explode himself. He had to hold her with all the strength he had in his free arm, as she was all over the place, trembling, cursing, riding out what must have been one of the strongest orgasms sheâs ever experienced.
When the feeling settled, Ethan slowly loosened his grip over her and slid his fingers out, bringing them to his lips. The taste of her astounded him every single time.
âIn case I havenât told you before⌠nothing can compare to the way you taste. Maybe apart from the way you feel, but I need to check to be certain.â
Before he was able to do so himself, she reached for his belt and unbuckled it hastily, letting his pants pool at his feet. Ethan hissed when she was ridding him of the last layer separating them, his throbbing member oversensitive to the slightest touch. He responded in kind, slipping her thongs down.
He stared at her as if heâs forgotten how to blink before saying:
âIf I were you, Iâd hold on tight.â
She grabbed the edge of the counter and tightened her grip, leaning onto her other arm, palm pressed flat onto the surface. Ethan positioned himself in front of her and the moment his tip met her sex, a wild lust overtook him completely, from top to bottom. He pushed hard, their bodies finally connecting.
He didnât waste time to make himself or her feel comfortable. Right now, he wasnât a guest - he was the invader, the intruder, the conqueror.
âFuck, itâs impossible youâre still so tight.â
In answer, she clenched her muscles around him even more, earning herself a throaty sound.
âYou little minx.â
She was going to be the death of him and what an epic death it would be.
âEthan, fuck me like you mean it.â Noelle bit her lower lip, knowing the effect this tiny gesture always had on him. He didnât need anything more. The sound of fast thrusts soon filled the air, making it thick and dense. The race started, two lovers chasing their gratification like it was the last thing they were ever going to do.
This wasnât vanilla.
It was chilli, whiskey neat and flames.
A dance of carnal desires, intense and salient, leading to the grand finale. Nothing finesse, quite the contrary - a satiation of the most primal of human desires.
Ethan kept thrusting into her so deep that she felt blood when she had to bite her lip, trying to stop the animalistic scream trapped in her throat, begging to be released. She felt every vein, every nerve inside of her, every place he was reaching. Her hands and arms hurt, but her mind, currently controlled by Ethanâs cock moving in and out of her in killer pace, has overridden any physical sensations other than pure pleasure.
âSoâŚso close.â She panted weakly, rolling her eyes as waves of pleasure kept crashing on her.
Leaning into her, he caught her earlobe and as he kissed her ear, Ethan groaned. âYouâre so,â thrust, âfuckingâ, thrust, âhotâ, thrust, âwhenâ, thrust, âyou come.â
And with that, she came.
Her whole body arched and hot white pleasure turned every cell of her body into bliss. It was like jumping into the pool on a sunny day, submerging yourself completely and then just⌠floating.
Ethan followed her instantly, her climax triggering his own. They were holding onto each other for dear life, compounding the intensity of their sensations and silently praying for this moment to never, ever stop.
When their breathing returned back to normal a few moments later, the older doctor pushed aside strands of her hair that stuck to her face and then cupped her cheeks.
âYou ok?â The tenderness in his voice almost made her heart stop.
As if she hasnât already been dead.
âOk? No, Iâm not ok. I am pretty fucking great.â
âThat you are.â He smiled wide. âYou are pretty fucking great.â
âWell you are not too bad yourself. How are you feeling?â
âI feel like I died and was reborn, all at the same time.â
They laughed at each otherâs choice of words, still in a tight embrace.
âReady for the next part, Ramsey?â
âNext part?â
âNow we need to sneak out of here for real.â

weâre in this together, arenât we?
okay so hereâs something i notice more and more everyday.Â
most people are like noble gases, in that their default status is being alone. they are just like me. iâm not the only one painfully aware of how alone i am. we are all a little bit alone, as much as we would hate to admit.
so, i believe, the most basic want, is the want to be wanted. to be seen, heard, acknowledged. human beings are social creatures. we survive by living in herds. when you acknowledge someone, you are bringing them into the herd. you are helping them survive. when you call their name, you are throwing them a lifebelt .

Word Count: 6k+Â
Rating: R
Summary: Ethan & Vickyâs first Christmas together⌠will everything go as planned?
Category: Mini series, completed. Part I can be found here.

Authorâs note: Part II is here and itâs long - sorry not sorry :D I put a lot of effort into this story and I hope youâre gonna like it :) Iâd like to thank A. from the bottom of my heart, not only has she proofread it and corrected my mistakes, but also gave me the most amazing feedback. Jennerâs response is also hers, but she thoughtfully let me use it :) This is for you my dear <3
Written for CFWC Winter season, using prompt 10.Â
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/1d0f9af3d2b2209b68469bb1f99039d0/fb4414f59d6cb601-6e/s540x810/a09ee6b8bc0d1772a41e6cad442691a1a92458e4.jpg)
Christmas Eve
And then it was just them.Â
In the car.
Alone.Â
âFor someone who has just said more words in 5 minutes than he does for a whole week, youâre surprisingly quiet, Dr Ramsey.ââ
âExcellent observation, Dr Valentine. This is exactly the type of insight that earned you a spot on the Diagnostics Team.â Ethan threw her a tiny smile. âBut itâs not surprising. Itâs called getting things back on an even keel.â
She didnât say anything, just gently moved her gaze outside the window, where the wintery Boston landscape unfolded right in front of them. In the background, Frank Sinatraâs velvety voice tucked her like a blanket and she couldnât help but think heâd love White Christmas in the state of Massachusetts.
It wasnât until then that she actually realised the Christmas song was playing in Ethan's car and not from the radio. This healthy compromise (Sinatra for him, Christmas song for her) made her smile, as she knew how much of an effort listening to Christmas tunes was for the man sitting on her left. His ears must have been bleeding heavily. She made sure of it, playing the jingles at full blast every evening, scarring him for life.Â
âDid you call your family to let them know youâre not coming?â Ethanâs deep baritone roused Vicky from the sea of thoughts she was immersed in.Â
âNope, for two reasons: a - they didnât know I was coming in the first place and b - I am still undecided.âÂ
Vicky noticed the muscles on his face twitch in an instant. Â
âWhat can I do to help you make your mind up?â Ethan gently took her tiny hand in his and caressed the inside with his thumb. Then, he took it to his mouth and placed a kiss with great reverence, as if he was a religious fanatic and she was an object of religious cult.Â
This took her by surprise. She was expecting a snotty remark, a raise of an eyebrow or dead silence. Instead, the question hit her with a load of affection so genuine that warmth instantly spread in her chest.
She knew exactly what it was that she needed.
He knew exactly what she was going to ask for.
âEthan, I⌠listen, you and I both know there is something more to your reaction. What I said in your office, it was just a trigger. I donât know what it is and frankly I thought about never mentioning it again. But we both know that the next time this happens, you will cut me off again. I am not going to force you to do something you donât want to. I just canât keep going through the same cycles and⌠andââ
He put his palm on hers and took a deep breath.Â
âAre you hungry? Tired?â The older doctor asked with concern.
What the hell? Oh, I see what youâre doing Ramsey. Change of subject. Fine. I said what I wanted to say. The ballâs in your court now, doc.
âNo to both.â She said as neutrally as possible, trying her best not to show him that the sudden change of subject upset her.
âGood. Before we go home, there is a place I need to stop by, is that ok?â The question sounded shyly, it wasnât a tone sheâd ever associate with him.
âIâve never heard of a murderer who asked his victim if itâs ok to stop by the crime scene.â
âTrust me, if I were to murder you, you wouldnât know.â
âHmm, Iâd like to think I know you well enough I would at least suspect.â
âIâd like to think you know me well enough to also know that Iâd rather give you one of Dr Ramseyâs signature tirades. They are worse than murder.â
âNo arguments here. So, will you tell me where we are going?â
âYouâll see.â
Soon, Ethan parked the car. He unbuckled the seat belt, opened the door and rushed to the other side, to open hers. He reached out for her hand with a faint smile and she blushed at the gentlemanly gesture.Â
Having intertwined their fingers, Ethan led her along a high brick wall until a gate materialised in front of them. He gently pushed the gate and let her through. Only then did she realise where they actually were.
âCommonwealth Avenue Mall? What are we doing here?â
âIf you ask me, itâs one of the most picturesque pathways Iâve ever seen and not only during winter. I like to come here for my runs and to⌠contemplate. Walk with me?â He asked, but it wasnât really a question. Hand in hand, they walked down the alley. Fresh snow scrunched underfoot and the strings of lights danced to the melody of delicate wind. If this wasnât a fairytale setting, she didnât know what could be.
Vicky studied Ethanâs features carefully. Although he was still a closed book sometimes, sheâs gotten quite good at reading him over the months. After Edenbrook, Ethan Ramsey was the second biggest field where her sharp diagnostic skills were heavily utilised. Maybe thatâs what she should focus on once she starts her PhD? âThe curious case of Ethan Jonah Ramsey.â
Thatâs how she noticed that something was clearly eating Ethan from the inside. If her calculations were correct, there was approximately 1/1000 chance of him making a decision to speak, so she decided to throw him a lifebelt.Â
âEthan, I can see that you want to say something, but it feels like youâre hesitating. Please donât feel obliged to talk, I want you to do it on your own terms. As long as I know you want to talk to me eventually, Iâm fine.â
âIf I donât speak now, Iâm afraid I might never summon the courage.â Ethan tried to make it sound like a joke, but she knew how serious he was right now. She knew how much it had to cost him. Suddenly, she stopped and put her hands around his neck, then pressed her forehead to his.
âDonât do this because of me.â
âBecause of you? Iâm not doing this because of you. Iâm doing it for you. For us. What Iâm about to say is painful, Vicky, but itâs nowhere near as painful as the thought of losing you. Iâve already told you how much time we lost because of my stubbornness. When⌠when you and Raf were locked in the hospital roomâŚwhen I thought you were slipping from my graspâŚâ He had to stop to clear his throat and take a deep breath, clearly struggling to talk. âI promised myself that if life gives me a second chance, I will not waste it. I will work on this, on us, harder than Iâve worked during my 10 years at Edenbrook combined. Iâd climb every damn mountain and swim every ocean if thatâs what it takes to have you in my life.âÂ
She wanted to cry. It took every ounce of her strength not to. Ethan wasnât a blabbermouth, but when he spoke - man, he knew how to choose his words wisely.
âEthan, whatever it is⌠we will get through it. Together. You are not alone, darling.â
Ethan felt tears prickling from underneath his closed lids. Not only because of what she said, but also because of what she didnât say. He saw the impact of his words in her eyes, yet she didnât want to make this about her, but him. Her selflessness was one of the things he loved and admired most about her. The older doctor never let himself be so vulnerable with any other person and as hard as it was for him, it also felt strangely right. As if all the pieces of this crazy puzzle called life finally came together.Â
Feeling as ready as heâd ever be, he took a deep breath and said: âLet me take you on a trip down memory laneâŚâ
25 years earlier
Ethan is 11 and heâs sitting alone in his room. The window in the 4 walls of his world overlooks the street and it's his only connection to the outside world. The window sill underneath is wide enough to sit on it, but not very comfortable for a long time.Â
He doesnât know how long heâs been sitting there, unmoving. It may have been hours, it may have been days. Time lost its sense.
Heâs already past the point of pain caused by the unnatural position, his body has entered the numb phase, and he doesnât feel anything anymore. He wishes his mind could join his body in the bliss of being rid of feelings.
It is only thanks to the carollers wandering on the streets that heâs convinced it must be Christmas Eve. And how he also knows itâs been 27 days since his mother walked out on him. Anger mixes with despair, yet heâs unable to stop waiting for her, stop jumping involuntarily at any movement in close proximity of his home. There is still hope.
Unbeknownst to him, Alan stands on the other side of the door trying to make the hardest decision today: to save his son or to be there for his son. Alan is a painful reminder of the life they once had, a bridge to the reality that tumbled down. He slowly retreats from the door, unsure if heâs doing the right or the bad thing. How are you supposed to know? Life does not exactly prepare you for moments like this.
Everyone asks him how Ethan is. No wonder, he is just a child whose mother disappeared into thin air. But do they not realise he suffers too? He loved, loves this woman more than life itself.
Alan was furious at Louise. But was he surprised? Not entirely. Deep down, he always knew that she was a restless soul. She always gave him hints - a subtle comment here and there, some words said during one of their fights. But he was blindly in love, so whenever she gave him reasons to think they shouldnât be together, he ignored it. And when she did something that surprised him, she won him over and he lost the argument with himself.
What worried Alan was that Ethan started showing Louiseâs personality traits. And as much as she fooled him, he didnât want his only child to end up broken and hurt. If he could, heâd do anything to protect him. But even as a father he was unable to shield his child from the damage of being abandoned by his mother, the only person that should forever shower him with unconditional love. How does one ever recover from such trauma?
Ethan knew. Although his dad tiptoed around him, he felt it. He knew exactly that he was fighting internal battles. He knew that his father suffered.Â
There wasnât anything that he wanted more than for his dad to come and hug him and tell him everythingâs gonna be alright.
Or for his mum to come back home and explain the unexplainable.Â
But somehow he knew this wasnât going to happen and he was tired of waiting for a miracle.
And on this Christmas Eve he made a decision: he will never let anyone fool him with a promise of unconditional love ever again.
He will separate himself from the rest of the world, build a wall so high no one will ever be able to jump over it.Â
No one will hurt him again, because you canât hurt the rational mind, you can only hurt an emotional heart.
Today
âI havenât cried since.â Ethan was now full on sobbing. âUntil I met you, that is.âÂ
She pulled him as close as humanly possible and enveloped him in a tight hug, with his head resting upon the crook of her neck. Hot tears streamed down his cheeks abundantly.
The older doctor was afraid that once heâd start, heâd never stop crying. All his shattered dreams, his sleepless nights, silent prayers, fake smiles, they all joined forces and attacked him with all their might. Had it not been for her hard grip, he mightâve fallen on his knees. How this petite girl found so much strength was a mystery to him, but heâd never been more grateful.Â
She kept rubbing soothing circles on his back and neck. It made her feel so unspeakably sad that the man she loved had to carry this unimaginable burden throughout his whole life. And as much as it sucked, she was happy that from now on, they could carry this burden together. Although he didnât say anything, Ethan must have agreed, as she felt the tension slowly leaving his shoulders. They stood there in the freezing cold for what felt like forever. But neither of them seemed to mind, because they were in their tiny little bubble, impenetrable, where no one could hurt them.
Finally, the older doctor broke the silence.
âLetâs go. You must be freezing.âÂ
âIâm about 5 minutes from hypothermia but I should be fine. I know a great doctor.âÂ
âWell, one of the most important principles of modern medicine is âprevent, not cure.â Plus, I think someone has really missed you.â
âââ
âOMG Jenner stââ
Before she was ready to finish the sentence, she was already on the floor, laughing like a maniac.Â
âYou will be the death of me, Jenner.â
Iâll treat that as a compliment, Vic. But Christmas treats first, chatting later, lady! Â
Thatâs how she thought the conversation went in the dog's head. Ethan helped her get up and took her coat.Â
âI hope you are still not sleepy.â
âNot really, why?â
âBecause I need a companion.â
âAlways & with pleasure, but I assume you mean something else right now?â
âYou minx. I want you to sit down comfortably, Iâll pour you a glass of wine. You can watch one of your favourite Christmas movies or play Christmas songs - whatever your heart desires.â
âWho are you and have you eaten my own Mr Grinch, Christmas-friendly creature?â
âI just need you to sit here whilst Iâll be working. Now go and get changed.âÂ
She obeyed quickly, which she always did when he used his commanding doctor voice on her. Whilst changing into leggings and a hoodie, some weird noises reached her ears, clearly coming from the living room. When Vicky came back, a glass of white wine sat on the coffee table. But thatâs not what surprised her.
The 37-year old diagnostician was tangled in Christmas lights and so was Jenner, who thought his master was playing some sort of game with him and kept jumping around Ethan.
âWhat are you doing?â
âWellâŚsince, because of me, you had to call off Christmas, Iâm reinstating it. I will take all the decorations out while youâll be sitting here doing nothing, maybe apart from instructing me on how to do it right. Does this sound like a fair punishment?â
âOnly if you let me record this and post it on Pictagram.â
âDonât cross the line, Valentine.â
âEthan Ramsey, king of rhymes! Fine, I suppose I can still die happy knowing Iâve instilled the Christmas spirit into you.â
âMaybe it wasnât such a bad idea to actually dump you in the forestâŚâ
âTalk to the hand, Gramps!â
 ---------
Christmas Day
Christmas mornings were always rushed and crazy at the Valentine household. Although Vicky loved Christmas in her family home, she didnât know how much she actually enjoyed the lazy, easy Christmas mornings until she was able to experience it. And she couldnât be more content that it was with Ethan.
Mercifully, he let her sleep until 9am (obviously, he wouldnât be himself if he didnât mumble something about her sleeping too long and how she was able to function like this, but she completely ignored the remarks) and then brought her breakfast to bed, which she consumed in its entirety, with a little help from Jenner. The most important meal of the day had been delivered with a complimentary kiss, which was her favourite part.
âEthan!â She shouted from the bedroom, not quite ready to leave the comfort of his bed. The older doctor left her with the food and went to prepare them both a cup of coffee.
âJesus Christ woman, youâre so loud Iâm starting to consider getting rid of my stereo.â
âOh, it didnât seem to bother you last night.â She winked at him and he grinned involuntarily. How was it possible that she was in possession of his facial expressions too?
âAnyway, can you please remind me what time we have to be there tonight?â
âBe where tonight?â
âNaveenâs Christmas Party.â
âWeâre not going.â
âYes, we are.â
âNo, we are not.âÂ
âOk, let me rephrase this: me and my unearthly seductive dress are definitely in attendance. If you and Your Royal Grumpiness wish to stay home, be my guests.â
âYou donât play fair.â
âAllâs fair in love and war.â
âYou know how much I hate rubbing shoulders with idiots in bowties.â
âI do, but let me offer some consolation. This time, you donât have to do this, because we are not raising any donations. Also, we can laugh at those idiots together and if either of us is stuck in a pointless conversation, the other can always rescue them.â
He couldnât argue with her logic, instead pulling her close against his chest and kissing the top of her head.
Later this eveningÂ
âV, how much longer until you are ready?â Ethan was growing impatient. He hated waiting and just couldnât understand what took her so long. He was convinced that even wearing a garbage bag, sheâd be the most stunning woman in the room.
âEthan, nothing has changed since youâve asked me 5 minutes ago.â
âFine, but donât be surprised if I leave without you.âÂ
âNo you wonât. But for someone who didnât want to go at all not longer than 8 hours ago you are quite eager now. Call me an influencer.â
âIâll call you whatever you want if this means we can leave soon. The sooner we leave, the sooner we can come back.â
âWhatever I want? Bad move Ramsey, bad move.âÂ
âIâll shoââ
He turned around and the words got stuck in his throat at the sight unveiling in front of him. She looked like a freaking goddess, who decided to descend from Mount Olympus and grace the mortals with her presence.
âYou were saying?â
âI..I⌠you..well..â For a man so educated he now sounded less articulate than a toddler. To make things worse, a certain body part painfully reminded him that behind the facade of accomplishments, he was still a primate.Â
âEthan, could you stop talking so much? I canât hear my own thoughts.â She laughed and it was so infectious that he couldnât help but smile.Â
She decided to wear a long, black gown, with a thigh high split showing her slim, tanned legs that he was a total sucker for. The ensemble was complimented by crystal embellished sandals and glamorous drop earrings.Â
âIâve never seen anyone whose insides matched their outsides so accurately. To me, you are perfect.â
Her heart stopped and she felt butterflies waltzing through her stomach. No matter how many times Ethan complimented her, she always felt like Cupid punched her right in the face. And she hoped the feeling would never fade or disappear.
âSo you watched Love Actually with me yesterday.â
âWatched is an overstatement. I might have peeked a few times.â Ethan cleared his throat. âCan we go now?â
âAbsolutely not. Did the Edenbrook gala not teach you that if you need to attend an event you are not particularly excited about, you shouldnât go sober?â
âI suppose you have a point here. One drink.â
âThree.â
âTwo.â
âDeal! Pleasure doing business with you, Dr Ramsey.âÂ
Ethan poured them both a glass of his best scotch. Before she was able to take a sip, he stopped her with his hand. âIâd like to propose a toast.â
âFire away.â
âTo curing the incurable. In medicine and in life.â He sent her a sweet, genuine smile that made her heart beat ten times faster.
Then, they made some bets about whatâs going to happen during this yearâs party, whoâs going to get so wasted that they will be forced to perform a walk of shame for months to come. For the whole time, the younger doctor couldnât shake the feeling that he is studying her.
âWhat is it? And donât tell me itâs nothing, Iâve spent too much time with you for my observation skills not to improve insanely. Like it or not, you created a monster.â
âI like to think of it as making the world a better place⌠nevertheless, Iâm impressed, Dr Valentine. For a 3rd year resident your skills are exquisite.âÂ
She put her hand on her heart and smiled. All the compliments sheâs ever received in her life faded in comparison to one from Ethan Ramsey. Her high school hero, her inspiration and she still couldnât quite believe it, the man she was now sharing her life with.Â
âNow, if youâll allow me, I must order a cab now, otherwise I may lose a battle soon.â
âWhat battle?â
Ethan looked at her, lust flooding from his eyes. He quickly stepped behind her and gripped her waist, then leaned into her ear, catching it ever so gently with his lips. This alone was enough for her knees to give out and she was never more grateful for the kitchen island and the fact she was holding onto it for dear life. But he didnât stop there. He whispered into her ear and no other sounds in the world could compare to the symphony of his voice, dripping with desire.
âThe one in my mind, between my rational mind and my primal desire, urging me to rip off this dress and devour you right now.â
Goosebumps spread across her body, a painful reminder of the fact that maybe her mind and mouth could lie to Ethan, but her body couldnât. Damn it.
She knew it was a matter of milliseconds before sheâd be unable to make a rational decision, so she quickly slipped from Ethanâs grip and whispered: âYou should order it now then.â Then, she placed a gentle kiss on his cheek.
âOh, youâre gonna make me work for it, arenât you?â
âWell, thatâs only part of the reason. The other, bigger part is that I just really, really want to show up at this party with my insanely hot boyfriend by my side, without finally having to hide and pretend. UnlessâŚheâs ashamed of me.âÂ
âVic, there are a lot of things in my life that have âshameâ and âyouâ in one sentence. Iâm ashamed of running away from you to Amazon. Iâm ashamed of denying my feelings for so long. Iâm ashamed of hurting you, more than once. But to have you by my side, to finally call you mine? Thatâs my greatest pride. Now, shall we?â He offered her a wide smile and his arm.
âYou asshole. First, you try to seduce me and then you make me cry. Letâs go then, Naveen is going to kill us. I promised weâre only gonna be fashionably late.â
âââââââ
The party was already bustling when they arrived, the room filled with chatter of many guests in attendance. The event was Naveenâs pride and a tribute to his many years as one of the most important figures in todayâs medicine. It was almost like Elton Johnâs Oscars after party - everyone wanted to be there. Being there made Vicky feel special, but more than that, uneasy - she was still just a resident and somehow felt like she didnât belong there. At least, not yet.
In the background, the string quartet played classical versions of popular songs and carols. The venue was impressive, located within one of Bostonâs most prestigious hotels, whose owner was Naveenâs - obviously - long time friend.Â
The second Dr Banerji spotted them, he practically ran in their direction, almost bumping into one of the guests.
âWell well, if this isnât my favourite pair of doctors. Dr Valentine, you look like you walked out of one of Botticelliâs paintings.â
âEnough with the formalities. Iâm so happy to see you, Naveen! Merry Christmas.â She hugged the old doctor tightly and although initially surprised by this display of affection, he instantly relaxed and returned the hug.
âMerry Christmas, my dear.âÂ
âItâs quite something, this party of yours Naveen. Youâve outdone yourself.â
âWhy, thank you. You know what my favourite part is?â He locked arms with the younger doctor and leaned in to whisper in her ear. âThis party satiates my hunger for gossip for months to come. And Iâm pretty sure this evening will be, for many reasons, unforgettable. Enjoy your evening, my friends, I shall see you around.âÂ
Naveen winked at Vicky and Ethan felt like there was some sort of unspoken agreement between them, one that he wasnât a part of.
âWhat was that about?â
âWhat was what about?â
âI know you and I know Naveen. Something is off here.âÂ
âEthan Ramsey, are you jealous? FYI, I donât fancy older men. Oh no, wait. I totally do.â She was trying really hard to stay serious, but failed miserably.
âVery funny, Valentine.â
âSorry Gramps. This one you were totally asking for.â
âIâm gonna go get us some real drinks, I need to hydrate myself heavily if Iâm to survive the evening.â
âDonât cloud your judgement too much, Ethan. You may need it.âÂ
Maybe he was imagining the whole exchanging looks thing between Vicky and Naveen. But now he was certain sheâs hiding something. And he intended to find out what it is or he was not Dr Ethan Ramsey.Â
After he fetched them the drinks, they found their seats and soon Naveen made his annual speech, summarising the whole year and thanking tons of people. Vicky loved experiencing Naveen as a speaker, he didnât have Ethanâs commanding presence, but his years of experience and sincerity in his voice made everyone listen with absolute silence.
He then joined them at the table. Of course he sat us with him, Ethan thought.
âNaveen, if you think Iâm going to be your source of hospital gossip, think again.â
âI donât know what youâre talking about. We donât spend as much time in the hospital together and I miss my dear friends.â
Before he was able to respond, Vicky pinched his thigh under the table and sent him a murderous look.Â
âWe miss you too, Naveen. Now, why donât you two catch up properly, whilst Iâm gonna go and do my round of talks, there are a couple of people I wanted to chat with.â
âSure, feed me to the lions, Vic.â
âWhen have you become such a drama queen, Ethan? If I wanted to feed you to the lions, youâd be standing over there.â She pointed her finger to the corner of the room, where some big pharma executives were enjoying themselves. She waved friendly in their direction, and they responded in kind.
âAlright gentlemen, I need to run before they catch me.â Â
Before she turned around, her and Naveen shared meaningful looks, but before Ethan had a chance to ask, she was already gone. Plus, Naveen changed the subject and the two immersed themselves in a very interesting conversation, which reminded Ethan how much he liked his mentor, not as a doctor, but genuinely as a human being. This made him one of a few people Ethan truly liked.
Dr Ramsey was one of those people who, when they were focused - whether on the case, on the conversation or on watching an opera - dedicated their attention entirely to said activity. Which was probably the reason why the sounds coming from the stage took him by surprise. He didnât realise that the string quartet had been replaced by a group of young people, who started playing more lively.Â
No longer than 30 seconds later, someone started singing, but the voice was not coming from the stage. It was coming from behind. Suddenly, all the guests turned their heads around as one.Â
The snow's coming down
I'm watching it fall
Lots of people around
Baby please come home
The angelic voice belonged to a beautiful girl in a black gown. She sat on a bar stool, side-facing everyone. Suddenly, she jumped from the seat and started walking towards the stage, each step sensual.
The church bells in town
All ringing in song
Full of happy sounds
Baby please come home
Ethan must have looked like an absolute idiot, because he sat there gaping like a fish.
They're singing "Deck The Halls"
But it's not like Christmas at all
'Cause I remember when you were here
And all the fun we had last year
Once on the stage, she owned both the stage and the crowd. Some people started dancing, others clapped to the rhythm and sang with her. When she finished and took a bow, the audience applauded her generously.Â
âGood evening everyone. Iâm Vicky and Iâm a doctor at Edenbrook Hospital. Thank you for organising this amazing event, Naveen, and thanks for having me. And now, please meet these amazing musicians, whom I have the honour of calling my friends. Back in high school we formed a band, which we called Valentineâs Day⌠that was a very accurate name on many levels.â She chuckled and the crowd followed.Â
âYou are looking at people who never gave up on their dreams and now play in some amazing venues. I couldnât be more proud of them. It would have been the same for me, most likely, if it wasnât for a book, which Iâm sure a lot of you ladies and gentlemen are familiar with. Itâs called Diagnostics Principles. After I read it, nothing was the same. And here I am, all these years later, getting covered in blood and sweat almost every day. But today, I can at least bask in the glory of the amazing people standing here with me.â Â
âIâd like to dedicate this next song to the author of the above mentioned book. He changed my life in more ways than he can realise. And although I promised him we will not exchange any Christmas presents, I havenât spent any money on this one, so technically it doesnât count, right?â She earned another amused reaction from the crowd.
âItâs my favourite Christmas song and Iâm so honoured to be able to sing it for you.â
The subtle sounds of a piano reverberated in the room and she started singing, her voice pure and powerful.
O Holy night
The stars are brightly shining
It is the night of our dear Savior's birth
Ethan couldnât move or breathe. He just stared, completely transfixed.Â
Long lay the world in sin and error pining
'Til He appears and the soul felt its worth
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn
To hear her singing was one thing. To feel all the things the act was doing to him, was completely different. With every sound produced by her vocal cords, a new, overwhelming sensation was born inside of him.
Fall on your knees
O hear the Angel voices
O night divine
O night when Christ was born
O night divine
O night
Oh night divine
Their eyes locked and she sent him a look so full of affection that he felt a warm tear flowing down his cheek.Â
For him, it was anything but watching a performance. It was a spiritual experience. Towards the end of the song, she hit the notes so high, that he couldnât help but look around the room. Everyone was in awe of her. And he was never prouder to call her âhisâ.
After the last bits of instruments resonated, the guests gave her a standing ovation. Ethan clapped his hands so hard that they hurt. He even whistled on his fingers which he hasnât done since high school. To hell with it, he thought.Â
And then he ran, knowing that in a second he will not be able to squeeze through the crowd of admirers. He scooped her in his arms and kissed her with so much passion that she felt dizzy.
âWow, that was different.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âThe kiss, it felt different.â
âThere are so many things I want to say right now, but I canât do it here. How much longer do we have to stay?â
âI promised the guys I will sing a couple more songs with them and then I wanted to introduce you and have a drink together. After that, weâre free to go.â
âDeal.â
ââ
âMy feet are killing me. I donât know how I survived in those heels, but Iâm walking barefoot for the next 2 days.âÂ
âHow fitting since Iâm not going to let you out of this apartment until we have to go back to work.â
âIâm gonna go get changed in my PJâsâ
âAh, not that soon.â Ethan said with a devilish smile and then approached her, reaching for her hand. âMay I have this dance?â
âAlthough Iâm tempted to say no to Dr Ramsey just to prove a point, I could never say no to Ethan.â She took a bow and gave him her hand.
âLucky me. I just wanted to dance with you away from the prying eyes. For the whole evening everyone stared at you. Iâm a selfish man and I was counting the minutes until I have the view all to myself.â
The sounds of Something by The Beatles started seeping from a glamorous gramophone.
âThe Beatles? I didnât take you for the type whoâd listen to them.â
âFrank Sinatra christened this song the âgreatest love song ever written.â And who am I to argue with him?â
For a moment they swayed in silence, cheek to cheek. Then, the older doctor leaned back and looked her straight in the eye.
âSo, you are not great at keeping promises, are you?â He mumbled playfully.Â
âYou mean the âletâs not exchange giftsâ thing? I stand by what I said earlier, I havenât spent a dime on it, so it doesnât count.â
âItâs funny that you donât even begin to realise how wrong you are.â He was very serious but there was a rare gentleness in his voice. âFirst of all, you mentioned you had a band in high school and that you sang but you never told me that you practically traded being a music star for being a doctor.â She blushed shyly at the compliment.
âSecondly, when you sang, I just couldnât take my eyes off of you. It was the most beautiful thing Iâve ever heard and I consider myself an audiophile.â
âComing from you, this is officially the biggest praise ever. I will have this printed and framed. You may even get an autograph if you play your cards right.â
âShut up, I havenât finished. You can ruin the moment later.â Ethan playfully swatted her arm.Â
âWith you, I am discovering parts of myself I never knew existed. And Iâm strangely content with this. So, to sum up, all of the above makes me feel very guilty that I didnât get you anything.â
âEthan, you donât have to give me anything. But itâs funny you said that, because you donât even begin to realise how wrong you are.â She was proud of herself for being able to use his own words as a counterargument.Â
âActually, you gave me the biggest gift yesterday: a real part of you. Iâm guessing, actually itâs more than a guess, that this is not something you shared with many people.â
âI havenât shared this with anyone.â
âAnd thatâs the biggest gift I could ever ask for. I want to be the person who helps you carry the cross, no matter how heavy it is.â
He pressed her even tighter against his chest and rested his chin on her head. But he felt the need to express all the other things his words couldnât, so he gently lifted her chin and pressed his lips to hers. She tasted and smelled divine. On a very basic level, she smelled like coconut and mango.Â
To him, she smelled like spring, summer, autumn and winter. Like a promise of sun after the storm. Like home. Ethan finally found his home, his safe haven.
The kiss made her feel dizzy again and then she remembered.
âSo, the kiss. It feels different. Why?â She looked at him so innocently it almost made him sweat. Ethan cupped her cheek as if he was holding the most precious thing in his palm⌠and for him, he was.
âWhen you were singing for me, I made a promise. From now on, whenever I kiss you, I want to make it feel like itâs the last time, but also a promise of the million more kisses we will share. Merry Christmas, Vicky.â
âMerry Christmas, Ethan.â
