This. Full heartedly!
It's a good and bad movie objectively, all because of these points. It's not a family unit and you don't really get that sense when you start it. I think that's a problem with some tmnt content in general, that they don't feel like a family first. They feel like ninjas first that just so happen to be reluctantly stuck together for their life long mission.
I could go on and on with this, but yeah I agree that it has so much good just as bad in it. It's genuinely a good time to experience, just to give it a watch if you haven't. And hey, maybe you'll watch it as much as I did just to see that rooftop scene and the new encounters! (Even though it does feel like it was a bit rushed with the villain stuff at points imo)
What's your opinion on tmnt 2007? Personally I love it and think it deserves a lot more love
So this might sound kind of weird, but I think 2007 is potentially one of the worst TMNT versions (that I have seen) overall, but with some of the best and most iconic scenes and sequences.
What I think makes it "bad" is that it makes many of the main characters, especially Leo and Splinter, kind of mean and unlikable, and throws in a lot of heavy-handed melodrama and interpersonal conflict that makes the turtle family feel, well, less like a "family". And while the main arc and point of the film is them being able to come together more by the end, I feel like it juuuuust misses out on making a stronger statement on that theme by the end. It comes close tho, but somehow that makes it more frustrating for me haha (like you almost had it!). It also gives laughably little screentime to Donnie and Mikey, which is a travesty in my opinion.
BUT despite me not being impressed by it overall, I think it also has one of the BEST sequences in all of TMNT - that being the Leo vs Raph fight. That whole scene is absolute perfection and it still illicits awe and emotion from me even after multiple viewings. I also really enjoy April, Casey, and Karai in it! Casey especially is fun as a surprisingly more level-headed balance to Raph in their friendship. And I highly respect the film for doing something new with its plot and creating a new villain for the TMNT to face.
So I guess, I liked certain pieces to the movie, but it just doesn't add up to a better whole. It's more "fun" than it is "good" in my opinion, if that makes sense.
Despite certain issues I have with the film, I have enjoyed watching it multiple times, and it would've been nice to see what they would've done with future movies if they hadn't lost funding
