Steve was created in service of Nancy's character journey in season one. Joe Keery was just pretty enough that he managed to snag a character arc of Steve's own. which ultimately drove them apart and forced them to grow outside of one another. I think Nancy is in a state of arrested development similar to Jonathan but not as bad as Jonathan. She's still stuck in her guilt and trauma over Barb, all they buried was an empty box containing Nancy's girlhood and innocence. The Nancy of seasons two and three is still stuck on those stairs. in season four she's learning now, through Steve and Robin, how to crawl forward too.
There's also a ladder motif with Steve throughout seasons 1-3. It's not intentional but it is interesting. Steve as a character is constantly climbing forward. He climbs up while Nancy stays stuck on the steps. Nancy is fully her own person but she's still trapped in that trauma and grief. In season four Steve doesn't have to climb anymore because by that point he's fully actualized. Now, Nancy just has to walk up and meet him.
With Steve, she doesn't have to just be a girlboss. And she never was some boring suburban girl. Nancy was always special to him. Different to him than other girls. (For good and bad.) He loved her kindness and how she cared and he just as much learns to appreciate her leadership and hard work in season four. When Jonathan talks about her initially he just sees her as some teenage girl just like all the others but he states it with derision. And when asked by Argyle what it is he loves about her, he lists all the ways in which she's proficient at her work, and how dedicated she is. While Nancy talks about Jonathan's personality (at least how she views it).
In season four Nancy gets to be a teenager with Steve (and Robin) again. She gets to recapture her lost youth before it's gone from her entirely.
It's another reason why people who don't like or refute anything about Stancy don't understand Steve and think that he's in constant torment over his past and who he was, that he should hold resentment to Nancy for breaking his heart. He isn't! And he doesn't!!! He doesn't hate himself for any past wrongdoings, he acknowledges them and talks about how they're necessary for change and growth, he sees that Nancy breaking his heart is part of that- whether from his mistakes or her own, and he doesn't blame her for it. He thanks her. Because it sucked but it was necessary to keep him from being stuck frozen in season two like she and Jonathan were. Nancy forced him to keep climbing.
And when Steve confesses his love to her it's without pretense or expectation. "I don't want anything from you, I just want you to know that you are loved". How much purer a form of love can one give? To love without pretense or expectation, only for the sake of loving. To love with eyes clear and kind enough to find pleasure in someone else's happiness even if it has nothing to do with you.

Saving Grace (Part 1/2) ~Joe Keery~
summary: after joe saves his best friend from her abusive and stalker ex-boyfriend, she begins to rely on him for everything. This not only drives a wedge between them, but between joe and maika as well
word count: 2.9k
pairings: joe keery x reader
warnings: abu$e is mentioned but not described, dr*g mention, fluff, angst, joe being in an established relationship with someone who is not the reader (if that counts), cute little caleb mention
a/n: I have grown so attached to joe (and even steve) recently, it’s not fair. Also, I love maika, so this is no hate to her. She is fantastic. there will be a part 2 to this, due to the word count i had & it will be shorter than this one
masterlist
“Please leave me alone, Jake.” y/n tried to pull her arm out of the grasp of her ex-boyfriend. “We broke up 6 months ago.”
“Um, I think I’d recall if you broke up with me.” Jake held tighter and looked down at her. She hated how he made her feel so small, not only physically, but emotionally as well.
“Obviously not because it happened. You probably don’t remember because you were so fucked up on drugs to even put together a coherent sentence.”
“Why on Earth would you even think about leaving me? Alright? I own you.”
“You own me? Are you on fucking crack or something? You can’t own a person and you most certainly cannot own me!” y/n raised her voice and yanked roughly. Her arm came free, and she rubbed the spot he was holding, a large purple bruise already beginning to form.
“Will you keep your voice down? You’re attracting unwanted attention.”
“If you didn’t want all this attention, maybe you should’ve thought about that before you tried to harass me in public, dumbass.”
“What did you just call me, bitch?” The look on his face only meant that she was about to be in trouble.
“You heard her the first time, dumbass.” Joe came out of the coffee shop and handed y/n her favorite drink. “Now why don’t you do what the lady asked, and just leave her alone?”
“Why don’t you make me, huh?” he looked at Joe and shook his head. “Who’s this asshole?”
Joe looked down at y/n. “This the guy you were telling me about?” y/n nodded, and Joe placed his own drink in her hand, stepping closer to Jake. “You are in no position to be demanding anything from anyone, buddy. Especially not after what you did to y/n.”
“Whatever this bitch told you is a lie, believe me. That’s all she does is lie and manipulate people.”
“Oh, she’s the liar? Really? That’s the story you’re sticking with?” Joe laughed dryly and cracked his knuckles. “Also, she’s not a bitch. Her name is y/n, so I suggest you start using her name properly. She is my best friend and she’s shown me all the bruises you’ve given her and all the messages you’ve sent. You’ve been stalking her for months and she has all the proof she needs to get you arrested. So, I suggest you back the fuck up and leave her alone or I will see to it, with every fiber of my being, that you get locked up and stay that way. Is that clear?”
“You think I’m afraid of you? You’re nothing but a bitch, just like y/n. You don’t have the-“ Jake was almost done his sentence when Joe’s fist collided with his chin. That was all it took for Jake to tumble to the ground. At this point, a crowd was beginning to gather.
“Joe, let’s go. He’s not worth it.” y/n grabbed his arm and attempted to pull him back. But he just leaned down to look Jake in the eye.
“Stay away from y/n! You got that?” Joe’s face was full of rage and if it hadn’t been for the constant tugging on his arm, he would’ve continued beating Jake to a senseless pulp. When Jake nodded, Joe turned back to face y/n. “Come on, love. Let’s go.” He walked past her and out of the mall.
Y/n looked over her shoulder and sighed before following Joe out to his car. She climbed in the passenger seat and handed him his coffee. “Thank you for that. I honestly didn’t think he was ever going to let go of me.”
“That’s what best friends are for, right?” he chuckled and sipped his drink before pulling out of the parking lot. The drive back to set was filled with nothing but silence. When Joe parked in his spot, he turned to face y/n. “Let me see your arm.”
“No, it’s alright. I’m fine.” She tucked it farther into her sleeve and reached for the door. Joe clicked the lock button and gently touched her elbow.
“Please? I promise I’m not going to hurt you.” He looked at her with pleading eyes. “I’m nothing like Jake.”
“I know. It’s just that…I don’t know.” y/n shook her head. “I don’t like people seeing the effects he ever had on me.”
“You’ve showed me multiple times though. I’ve cleaned up your cuts whenever he got a little too violent. I’ve seen it all. So will you please let me see the damage this time?” Joe pleaded one last time before y/n slid her sleeve up to her elbow. His eyes widened when he saw the bruise. “I’m gonna kill him.”
“Joe, I already told you I’m fine. It’s not that big of a deal.”
“The hell it’s not! He’s not going to get away with this, I promise.”
“Joe, I love you. I really do, but I think you scared him enough today.” y/n smiled. “Thank you.”
“I’m just trying to be the greatest friend in the world. No need to thank me.”
“You’re already the greatest, Joe. You just don’t get the appreciation you deserve for it.”
“I want you to know that I’m always going to be here to help you, no matter what. And I promise to never tell your story to anyone.”
“Thanks, Joe. That means a lot to me.”
Joe smiled as the two of them walked to the set, completely prepared to film their scenes. The secret of abuse would stay between them, for now.
A few weeks later, Joe’s phone never stopped ringing & he had found that he could never get any alone time with his girlfriend, Maika because y/n was always in need of something. While he didn’t really notice, Maika couldn’t help but get annoyed.
She didn’t mind it at first. She knew that Joe just wanted to be a good friend. It wasn’t until y/n started interrupting their special date nights with the tiniest problems that Maika spoke up about it.
“Joe, this is getting way out of hand. We never have a minute alone anymore without y/n constantly calling you or just showing up here. When are you going to tell her to stop?”
“I can’t just stop helping her. She’s my best friend and I made a promise.”
“What happened that was so bad you had to make a promise to help her with everything?”
“She um….I can’t say anything. I promised not to.”
“Why do you keep making these promises for her? Don’t you see that she’s taking advantage of you?”
“What are you going on about? She is definitely not taking advantage of me.”
“Yes she is, Joe. You drop everything whenever she calls. And lately, that’s been every single hour.”
“It’s called being a good friend, babe. I can’t just ignore her. She’s my best friend.”
“I know, but it really feels like you’re dropping me for her. Please tell me that’s not what’s happening.”
“Of course it’s not.” Joe walked closer to his girlfriend and held her. “If it makes you feel better, I won’t go help her every time she calls.”
“Okay. Good.” Maika stood on her toes to place a kiss to her boyfriends lips. Just as he returned the favor, his phone began to ring. They didn’t need to check the ID to know it was y/n, since Joe had assigned her a personalized ringtone. “Let it go to voicemail.”
“I plan on it.” Joe kissed her again and smiled when the phone stopped ringing. “Finally, some alone time.”
For the next week, being on set wasn’t easy for Joe or y/n. Joe was just trying to make his girlfriend happy but to y/n, it felt like he didn’t want her in his life anymore, so he stayed away as much as she could and was coming to work late every day.
The next Saturday happened to be the hardest for Joe. Y/n was running extremely late, and it started to worry him.
“We’re gonna have to start without her. Let’s just film the scenes she isn’t in.” Matt looked at Ross, who was looking at Joe. “Come on, Joe. It’s time to film.”
“But y/n isn’t here yet.”
“It’s okay. The scene we’re going to film doesn’t need her yet.”
“What if something bad happened to her? Has anyone been able to contact her?” Joe looked at his costars frantically. “Caleb, she talks to you the most. When’s the last time you spoke to her?”
“Last night when she told me that she’d be here on time today.” Caleb checked his phone just to make sure. “Yeah. The last message was at 9:45 last night.”
“Damn it. How about you, Gaten? Sadie?”
“Sorry, dude. Nothing new for a few days.” Gaten shrugged. Sadie, on the other hand, was staring at her phone as if she was deciding how to respond to a certain text.
“What is it?”
“Um, she says she’s not coming in today. Female problems.” Sadie quickly typed something in response and shoved her phone in her backpack.
“How many scenes do I have to film today?” Joe looked at Ross.
“7. But they’re short scenes and should be able to be shot quickly. Why?”
“I gotta check on y/n.”
“Won’t Maika get pissed?” Gaten questioned as he followed Joe to their marks.
“She’ll get over it.”
The two boys began their scene and remarkably, Joe only messed up twice, so it was easy to film. But for the rest of the day, he could barely focus on his lines. Y/n was all he could think of and because of that, he was stuck on set until it was dark outside. He checked his phone when he could and noticed multiple missed calls from y/n.
As soon as he was allowed to leave, he hopped in his car and drove to y/n’s apartment quickly. He tried calling her, but she wasn’t answering her phone, causing even more panic to flow through his body.
When he got to her building, he rushed to her door and walked in. All the lights were off, and he became more worried.
“y/n, are you home?”
“I’m in here.” He heard her voice and followed it, finally locating her in the corner of her living room.
“Why are you sitting in the dark?”
“Jake came back so I didn’t want him to know I was home.” She tried to look at his face but failed, due to the darkness. “Why didn’t you answer my calls?”
“I was on set all day. I’m so sorry.” He sighed. “Why didn’t you answer my calls?”
“I meant last week. You just stopped answering me altogether and you were avoiding me on set. Did I do something wrong?”
“No. Well, not really. It’s just that Maika-“
“Of course it has something to do with her.” y/n stood up from her spot on the floor and clicked on a lamp. “Did she tell you to stop talking to me or something?”
“No. She just asked me to stop letting you take advantage of me.”
“I was not taking advantage of you! I needed your help.”
“Yeah, with small problems. That’s not exactly what I meant when I said I’d be there to help.”
“You said you’d always be here to help me, no matter what.” y/n threw her hands up in frustration. “And it wasn’t a small problem. Jake came back and you know how horrible he is. I was terrified, and even more so because I didn’t have my ‘best friend’ to talk to. I was completely alone.”
“A ‘best friend’ isn’t someone who constantly calls on the other person to fix every little problem, y/n.” He chuckled coldly while shaking his head. “This is starting to get ridiculous.”
“Yes, I agree.” y/n sighed and took a seat on the couch. “Maybe we should just stop hanging out with each other for a while.”
“What? That’s not what I meant.”
“Joe, it’s really for the best. I mean, that way I’ll stop bothering you and getting on yours and your girlfriends nerves.”
“No, wait. I take it back. I don’t want that. Your calls don’t bother me. I’m sorry.”
“Look, Joe. You already said it. It’s out there. And it’ll be better for your relationship if I’m not always butting in. Maybe then you guys can move forward with your relationship.”
“Y/n, I-“ Joe tried to form a coherent sentence, but nothing came out for a minute. “What about the show?”
“That’s the only place I’ll see you and talk to you. Our relationship is no longer friendly. It’ll be strictly professional from here on out.” y/n got up and walked to the door. “You can go now, Joe.”
Joe looked at her sadly but left without a word. Once the door was closed, y/n turned off all the lights in her apartment and cried herself to sleep. Losing Joe left a big hole in her heart that she knew nothing would fill.
The sun wasn’t even up the next day when y/n woke up to her phone ringing loudly. She rubbed her eyes and answered her phone sluggishly.
“Ugh, Caleb. What do you want? It’s too early.”
“Are you gonna be coming to set today? You still got a few scenes to shoot. And I feel like I’ve barely seen you all week.”
“Is Joe going to be there?” she sighed and swung her legs off the side of her bed.
“He’s here right now. Why? Are you guys okay?”
“I’ll tell you more when I see you.” She checked the clock on her bedside table. “I’ll be there in 20.”
“Okay, great.” Caleb hung up and looked over at Joe. He was pacing while studying his lines. “She’s coming today. Are you sure everything is fine between you? She didn’t sound very happy.”
“It’s a long story. One that I promised not to tell.”
“Alright. I’m gonna take that as a no, but I’m not going to pry.”
“Thanks, Caleb.” Joe sighed and looked down at his phone. The last text he sent to y/n still said it was undelivered, meaning that she either had crappy service or she had his number blocked. Joe had a bad feeling it was the latter.
When she finally showed up on-set, most of the cast had filmed their only scene and were just hanging around to see how the rest of the day would go. There was also a handful of people who wanted to see what was really going on with y/n and Joe. The second the two of them made eye contact, the tension in the air became thicker. Anyone standing near them could feel the intensity. Gaten was the first one to attempt to break the tension.
“The quicker we get this done, the quicker we can all go out for a celebration.”
“Okay.” y/n smiled and turned to Joe. “You ready to do this?”
“Always.” He returned the smile and followed her to their marks. When the director called action, it was like all their problems were forgotten. Y/n felt like herself again and Joe was happy they were talking again, even if it was only just professionally.
After their scene, Caleb, Gaten and Sadie approached them.
“And I thought you guys were having issues.” Gaten smiled & Sadie nodded.
“Just because we’re no longer friends, doesn’t mean we aren’t going to be professional.” Joe looked at his friend and pulled out his phone. As y/n walked away with Sadie, Joe sat in his chair. “Honestly, it’s hard to do this, guys.”
“I know you can’t tell me exactly what happened, because you promised, but maybe there’s a way you can tell me without giving too much detail.”
“Sorry, but I can’t. It’s not just my story to tell. And besides, a promise is a promise. I can’t go back on it.” Joe thought back to what happened the night before and sighed. “I’m an idiot. I’ll be right back.”
Gaten & Caleb watched as Joe walked out of the studio. Y/n and Sadie gave Gaten a look and he shrugged, prompting them to walk back over to him.
“What was that all about?” y/n questioned while sipping on her coffee.
“Not totally sure. We were talking about promises and he mentioned that he promised you he wouldn’t say what happened and how he couldn’t go back on that promise. Then he just got up and walked out. Mentioned something about being an idiot.”
“He’s a big idiot.” y/n sighed. “He used to be my best idiot.”
“Are you going to tell us what actually went down?”
“I did promise you, didn’t I?” y/n set her cup down and proceeded to tell her costars what happened. She even went all the way to the beginning of her friendship with Joe.
Joe, on the other hand, was currently on the phone with Maika.
“Babe, I know I said I’d get her to leave us alone, but I made a promise, and I don’t go back on those. Especially not ones that I’ve made with y/n.”
“Well I’m your girlfriend. Shouldn’t my needs be more important right now?”
“They are important, trust me. But Y/n is important to me too. You can’t just expect me to drop her because it’s what would please you.”
“You’re never focused on this relationship anymore, Joe. You have to pick.”
“Are you fucking kidding me? Look, I love you, but you’re being ridiculous.”
“It’s either her or me, Joe. Who are you going to pick?”

futures - steve harrington x reader
Y/N’s older sister is getting married, and Y/N’s mom just won’t stop asking her when it’s her turn. Thankfully, she has her best friend Steve Harrington right beside her...who Y/N just so happens to be head over heels in love with. And she’s wearing a dress that makes her look like a giant pink marshmallow. No big deal, right?
Note: Me, writing ANOTHER fic featuring a sister’s wedding and a guy who’s in Stranger Things? But this time, it’s the actual Stranger Things character? Shocking. Anyways, I saw Free Guy a few weeks ago, and it reignited my love for Joe Keery, which then reignited my love for Steve Harrington...so this oneshot was born! Pairing: Steve Harrington x Female!Reader Warnings: A few tiny mentions of alcohol.
Y/N Y/L/N stands on the church’s steps, waiting for her best friend Steve Harrington to appear with her bouquet. No, she’s not getting married. Not for a long time anyway. The bride to be is actually her older sister Nicole, and she’s one of her bridesmaids. Unfortunately, she’s left her bouquet in Steve’s car, meaning he has to speed to the venue to drop it off. At least he’s her plus one. But of course, Steve is late once again. If she misses her walk down the aisle, she’s convinced her, her mother and her sister will tell Hopper to put a warrant out for his arrest. Thankfully, Steve’s BMW pulls into the parking lot a few seconds later, and she jumps down the stairs as Steve gets out of his car, running his hands through his trademark quiff.
“Steve! You’re late! I need to walk down the aisle in like five minutes!” She hisses, speed walking over to his car. “Where the hell have you been?!”
“I’m sorry, okay?! My dad had to help me tie this stupid tie, and then my mom wanted to take like a million photos. You know how she is.” Steve says, and sighing, Y/N nods. Steve’s mom is a lot. She’s barely around her son, but when she is, she doesn’t want to let him go. “But I’m here, and I brought your flowers.” He says, opening the trunk of his BMW.
“Thank you, you’re a-” Y/N begins, but something else in the trunk catches her eye. “Steve Harrington, tell me you did NOT bring your bat studded with nails to my big sister’s wedding.”
“...Okay, I won’t.” Y/N raises her eyebrow, and he rolls his eyes. “Hey! I get it, I do, but monster hunting is a serious business Y/N! It never sleeps, so ya gotta be prepared. And besides, this thing-” He points at the bat. “-saved your life! Remember?!”
“My leg Steve. It saved my leg.” She corrects him, ignoring his comments about how the leg is still an essential part of the body, and how it’s thanks to him that she still has her right one. “...Anyway, you think these monsters are going to attack the church and reception? Seriously?”
“...I-I don’t know! Maybe! At least I’m prepared, just in case.” He exclaims, holding up his hands. Y/N rolls her eyes and grabs the flowers, walking back towards the church steps. “By the way...you uh, you look really pretty today Y/N. I like your makeup.” Steve calls over, and she stops in her tracks, a smile replacing her eye roll. She knows part of her can’t stay mad at Steve, even if he is a total idiot. He’s just too cute to stay mad at for too long. But she’d rather die than admit that to him. And besides, she’d be lying if part of her didn’t like being called cute, especially by someone like Steve Harrington.
King Steve, who only two years ago ruled the school and barely looked in her direction, was now her best friend in the whole world and the plus one at her sister’s wedding. It’s funny how life turns out. After all, like Steve said, the only reason why she and Steve became friends was because he saved her from being attacked by a demodog by wielding the very same bat he brought to the wedding. Even though he was sometimes a complete idiot...okay, he was a complete idiot most of the time, she was glad to have Steve and his protection there. It made her feel safe, feel comfortable. Of course, she would never tell him that either. She hears footsteps behind her, and Steve soon appears at her side. “Or we could just use the bat against your weird drunk relatives.” He murmurs under his breath as the pair enter the church, and she giggles. Part of this still feels weird. Weird to have Steve Harrington of all people next to her, dressed in a tuxedo of all things. Have him socialising with her family. Part of her wonders if she’s dreaming. If she pinches herself, she’ll wake up and go back to being a nobody. Just as she’s about to try it out, she glances over at Steve. His brown eyes are wide with wonder as he takes in the ornately decorated church with flowers and banners everywhere, the efforts of her, her mother, her sister and the rest of the bridal party. Once again, she can’t help a smile from forming on her face. Or maybe she can keep the dream going a little bit longer. But before she can do anything else, one of her fellow bridesmaids runs up to her, grabbing her arm.
“There you are! We’ve been looking for you everywhere! It’s almost time for us to start!” She gasps, pulling her towards the back of the church. Y/N glances back at Steve, giving him a small wave.
“Bye, Y/N. See you on the other side!” He calls. And once again, Y/N cannot stop a big smile from spreading onto her face.
*~*~*~*~*
A few hours later, after the vows have been said and Y/N’s big sister is officially a Mrs, Steve and Y/N stand around at the reception, drinking Coke that they wish was laced with vodka. Steve already tried to bribe one of her distant aunts to get them some, but it didn’t work. Y/N looks over to where her sister is standing, gazing up at her new husband with pure love and adoration. Her chest feels all warm. Maybe one day, she’ll get to experience something like this. Marrying someone she loves, with all her friends and family around.
“She looks great, right? Like Princess Diana.” She sighs happily. Nicole was glowing, both inside and out. Steve nods.
“Yeah, yeah, she does...if Princess Di was wearing a giant marshmallow, that is.” Y/N snorts, trying to hide her laughter so her family doesn’t hear her.
“Steve! You cannot say that! She’s my sister!” She gasps, a few giggles escaping her mouth. “...It is true, though.” Steve grins a classic Steve Harrington smile that sends her heart into overdrive every time she sees it.
“I mean, you’re not exactly one to talk. Your dress is exactly the same, just dyed bright pink.” He smirks, making his escape to try and score some drinks at the bar before Y/N launches a centrepiece at his head. Sighing, she feels her heart slowing down. Not entirely, but a noticeable difference nonetheless. She can see Steve out of the corner of her eye getting roped into a conversation with her uncle. He’s the one who’s really into birdwatching and just loves to tell everyone about his experience when he was stuck in the pouring rain but just had to look for this really rare bird. Of course, hearing that story was about as exciting as watching paint dry. But Y/N decides to let Steve hear it for a little bit, just as a punishment for calling her a marshmallow. She sniggers as Steve makes eye contact with her, desperately trying to signal to that he needs rescuing. However, just as she decides to give him a break and rescue him from her uncle’s clutches, her mother sidles up to her. Great. Now she’s the one who needs rescuing.
“Hi, sweetheart.” She smiles. Y/N suppresses a groan rising from within her. Her mother is wearing the classic ‘mom smile’. The one they give you just before they ask what you’re doing with your life and why you haven’t got a well-paying job and already produced at least two grandchildren for her before the ripe age of 30.
“Hey, mom. Nicole looks great, right?” Her mom nods while Y/N braces herself for the impending question.
“She does. She really does.” Her mother beams, tears glistening in her eyes. Y/N softens slightly at that. Seeing the happiness on her families face all morning has been nice. Hopefully, she’ll get that chance one day. “You know sweetheart...” Her mother begins. “One day, I’d like to see you in a dress like that. Maybe not as big as Nikki’s, but similar anyway.” And there it is. “You know...James over there has a son about your age. He’s in your algebra class, I think. He’s cute, right?” She grins, and Y/N groans. She knew Andrew well. Most people in her year did. Andrew was someone who was more preoccupied with picking his nose and trying to cheat off of her paper than actually doing work. He wasn’t exactly her idea of her true love, no Prince Charming. “I’m not saying anything...”
“But...” Y/N continues under her breath. Of course, it was not the first time she had heard this speech in her life.
“-But I just want to make sure you’re happy and taken care of, sweetheart. I know I can be overbearing, but I’m just thinking of your future.” Y/N’s groan fades, and she smiles, pulling her mother into a hug. Even though her mother’s incessant questioning and trying to set her up with everyone was annoying, at least it came from a place of love.
“I know, mom, I know. I just...”
“And besides, James said Andrew wants to be an accountant! That’s good, right?” And there it is again. Y/N decides against telling her that there’s no way in hell Andrew will ever be an accountant and instead says nothing. In all honesty, she didn’t want any of the guys her mother suggested for her. Because all Y/N wanted...was Steve Harrington. Even though he’s a complete idiot and slightly insane (at least, insane enough to try and fight armed Russian guards one on one) like some sort of embarrassing cliché, Y/N has been in love with her best friend Steve Harrington for the last few months. Whenever she thinks of her future...it’s him that pops up into her head.
Falling in love with Steve was a lot different than she expected. Not least because at the start, she never thought it would be him she’d actually fall in love with. But as time went on, and they grew closer and closer, and Steve was there for her more and more, she found herself and her feelings changing. In a good way. When he did his complete 180 and became the surrogate father to a bunch of kids definitely helped. But it wasn’t just that. Because for Y/N Y/L/N, falling in love with Steve Harrington was far easier than she ever expected. It was nothing like the movies. There were no fireworks. No butterflies in her stomach. It was...so normal. She had gone to visit him and Robin at Scoops Ahoy, just like she had done multiple times before. When she walked up to the counter, Steve turned around, his winning sales speech prepped...and stopped the moment he laid eyes on her. The way his face lit up as soon as he recognised her unlocked something inside her. Everything she had ever felt about Steve made sense at that point.
Why she wanted to spend so much time with him, even if it was just eating so much ice cream that it made her stomach hurt whilst he was on shift, why she tended to his wounds after he got his ass kicked once again, why she put up with his dumb jokes and movie references, why she could spend all night talking to him, unlike anyone else...it was because she was in love. In love with Steve Harrington.
Of course, Robin and most of the kids...(well, Max and Jane) noticed almost immediately and have been encouraging her to tell him ever since she found out. Both to see their friends happy, and so Steve will stop hopelessly flirting with every woman who comes into the Scoops Ahoy store. But Y/N’s too nervous. Most people don’t fall in love with their best friends. And if they do, they definitely do not tell them. So, Y/N’s kept her mouth shut all this time, unwilling to ruin their friendship and afraid that he doesn’t feel the same. And of all the days to freak out about this, she picked the day her sister is getting married. The day she’s wearing a pink marshmallow. Speaking of the devil, Steve walks up to them. Y/N tries to ignore how good he looks in his suit, his trademark quiff as fluffy as ever. It doesn’t work. “Hey, Mrs Y/L/N!” He grins. “What a lovely service. Nikki looks gorgeous, by the way.” Her mother’s face lights up.
“Thank you very much, Steve! That’s so nice of you to say.” She pulls him into a hug. Y/N wonders if her mother would ever approve of her dating Steve. She adores him, but being your daughter’s best friend is a lot different than being her boyfriend. And, of course, that would involve actually telling either of them. Her mother would probably be happy for her, but she still has no idea how he’d react. And after all, he’s the important one. “Okay, kiddos, I’m off to speak to the caterer and see where this dang food is. You two stay out of trouble, alright?”
“Of course, Mrs Y/L/N. Wouldn’t dream of it.” Steve nods, and the pair wave her mother off. “God, your uncle is so fucking boring.” Steve groans, and Y/N giggles.
“You’re telling me you didn’t enjoy hearing his story about that time he got stuck in the rain for the...fourth time now?”
“Is this because I said you looked like a marshmallow?”
“Maybe.” She smirks. A silence falls amongst the pair. Y/N asks herself if it would be so bad if Steve knew she was in love with him. Maybe she should tell him? How could it hurt? His eyes flicker down to her lips, and for a moment she wonders if he feels the same...if he’s also wondering what it would feel like to kiss each other.
“Y/N?” Oh god, here it is.
“..Mhm?”
“I think you have lipstick on your teeth.” ...Or maybe not. Her eyes widen, and her cheeks flush.
“Oh fuck, Steve! And you couldn’t have told me this before? God, you’re such a...boy!” She exclaims, dashing off to the bathrooms, embarrassed by her outburst and by looking bad in front of Steve. Speaking of Steve, he’s left standing alone, confused.
“Was it something I said?”
*~*~*~*~*
Later that night, Y/N and Steve sit alone at a table, munching on leftover cheese and pineapple sticks from the buffet as couples sway on the dance floor. “My mom is kicking my ass about not going to college.” Steve groans. “I just don’t get why she won’t let me live my life a little. I feel bad enough as it is. Like, I like Scoops Ahoy! Sure, it’s not ideal, but it’s a job, and it’s good! Well...it’s good when you come to see me.” He admits, and it takes everything in her to not reach over and kiss him right there.
“I feel you. My mom keeps trying to set me up with every single guy at this wedding, and I don’t want any of them. These guys are not my type.” Steve raises his eyebrows suggestively.
“Oh? So who is your type then?” Oh shit. Y/N almost chokes on a cheese cube. Steve keeps staring at her, his eyebrows raised as she tries desperately to think what to say. Should she just come out with it? Just admit it?
“You.” She takes a breath, and for a second, she sees something flicker in Steve’s eyes. What it is, she doesn’t know. But then, before she could ask him, her fear takes over. “...You don’t know him.” She curses herself for being so close to admitting it and still not doing it...but in reality, she’s still terrified of rejection. It took her and Steve long enough to become friends, and she can’t ruin it just yet. “He goes to another school.” Steve’s demeanour changes slightly, and he frowns. But it’s barely noticeable, and soon he’s back to his regular self.
“Well, you’ll have to introduce me some time, alright?” He asks, and she nods. A part of her is still confused by Steve’s change in demeanour. What does it mean? Could it be...could he feel the same? But before she can even say anything, the opening sound of Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline begins to play. Steve’s eyes light up, and he springs up, pulling her up with him. “Come on! I love this song!” He grins, leading her onto the dance floor, dodging the bodies of her family left and right. They soon stop, and Steve takes both her hands in his, pulling her closer into his body. She feels sparks the instant he does. Steve is so warm...and smells so good. Her heart starts beating faster. Thankfully, Steve doesn’t notice and twirls her around the dance floor, singing along to the song as he does so. “Thought I’d at least give the most important bridesmaid a dance.” He smiles.
“Steve, I’m not even the most important one. I’m not the maid of honour. You don’t have to do this.”
“You should be. You’re the bride’s sister, for fuck’s sake.” He says, twirling her under his arm and bringing her closer to him. “But anyway...to me, you’re the most important girl here.” Her cheeks flush. Okay, that’s weird, right? Most best friends don’t say that about each other, do they? As the song fades out and is replaced by the sound of Foreigner’s I Want to Know What Love Is, Y/N and Steve continue to hold onto each other. Steve gently begins to sway her. The world fades out around them. The sounds of her drunk relatives, her cousins jumping around...everything goes. Just them and the music. “I want to know what love is...” Steve softly sings along to the chorus, staring into her eyes. “I want you to show me..” Y/N’s heart soars. Is...is he singing about her? Does he mean her? Steve continues to serenade her as the two slowly spin around the dance floor. Y/N goes through everything in her mind. Every memory, every scenario, everything she and Steve have ever been through. And then...she decides to tell him. Tell him the truth. Tell him that she’s in love with him.
“Steve...”
“Mhm?”
“I couldn’t tell you this earlier, but...”
“Yeah?”
“...It’s you. My type, I mean. It’s always been you.” Steve looks slightly shocked, and she continues. “I’ve been too scared to tell you, but...I’ve been in love with you for the past few months now, and...fuck, I don’t know. I just. I love you, Steve!” Steve doesn’t say anything for a moment, and Y/N sighs, thinking she’s destroyed her friendship with Steve forever. But, just as she’s about to leave Steve’s embrace and go hide from the embarrassment, he whispers:
“God, I’ve been waiting for you to say that.” Steve leans his head in closer, and Y/N’s head rises up to meet it. The music swells as their lips connect. Y/N can hear her mother and sister gasping in the background, but she doesn’t care. All she cares about is how she’s kissing Steve Harrington. And he loves her back. The music soon changes to What a Feeling by Irene Cara, and the pair pull apart. Steve has her lipstick smeared on his lips, and she’s sure her hair is falling out of its meticulous hairstyle, but neither of them care. “Wow...that was....amazing.” Steve gasps, and she nods. “You know, it’s weird.”
“What do you mean?”
“Well, I just kissed the girl of my dreams, who is also my best friend. I think my world is kinda...changed forever. Even after all the crazy, life-altering shit we’ve been through...kissing you is the thing that turns my world upside down. Even after dealing with the literal upside down.” Y/N smiles.
“Well...maybe you should do it again then.” Steve smiles.
“Don’t have to tell me twice.” He chuckles, leaning in once more.

have you met benjamin ‘benjy’ watson yet? he has lived in saltlight for his entire life & i believe they’re twenty eight. they are determined, adaptable, & sharp, but can also be abrasive, angry, & cold; they work as a drug dealer/bartender. they look exactly like joe keery & their label is the dirtbag.
full name — benjamin watson nickname(s) — benjy name meaning — son of the right hand age — twenty-eight date of birth — november 1st place of birth — saltlight current location — saltlight gender — cis-male pronouns — he/him sexual orientation — bisexual (heavy preference to men) religion — atheist occupation — bartender / drug dealer education level — high school family — jude watson (father), mila watson (mother, estranged) elodie & celestine (half siblings, estranged) finances — poor spoken languages — english, spanish faceclaim — joe keery
You were a sweet boy, that’s what your father says while you sit with him during his long doctors appointments, you were a sweet boy with a big heart and so much love to give. What happened to that sweet boy? Where did he go?
Benjy was the kid on the south side of saltlight that everyone knew because they all loved his father, a kind man in his own right, did everything that he could for the community that needed some joy in their life. He was the favourite school teacher that everyone loved and would take just about any kid under his wing that didn’t have a parent, and it never made Benjy jealous, it just made him proud. But eventually there came a time when everything got to be too much for his mother, his dad was spending all their money for this community that he loved so much, sometimes, she says, i think you love them more than us.
He’s ten when he watches her leave, the last thing that he heard about her was that she had gone off and married someone else. It was hard for him to look at his father after that, his father who loved everyone so much.
It starts when he’s thirteen, maybe he can blame it on growing pains, maybe he can blame it on the fact that he and his father were constantly in a state of losing their house, or that no matter what he does he will never be enough to get into the good schools that he needs to for a bright future but he starts acting up, he’s caught stealing from a woman he’s known his whole life, when she catches him he watches this kid with a pinched face and a chip on his shoulder and gives him kindness instead of calling the police on him. She knows that his mother left, knows that his dad has now taken on a second job that he shouldn’t have to to make ends meet.
It’s then that he starts working for her, doing small things around her shop. It's not much, it’s not even a real job but she pays him, and he sits and does his homework while she works the register and his father picks him up at ten pm like he always does. It’s a kindness that Benjy didn’t deserve, and he kept it with him after she died. He was fifteen then, too young to take on the shop itself he watched it close down, it later became a high end thrift store and Benjy can’t walk past it anymore.
He gets arrested when he’s seventeen for stealing a car.
It’s the first string of small offenses and he’s only saved because another teacher sees potential in him.
You’re a smart boy Benjy, he looks at him with empathy in his eyes, it’s a look that you can’t fake.
Benjy starts getting better grades and is even staying out of trouble, and then he meets his partner, the one that he swore he was going to marry. They set him on the right track, they’re a good influence on him, and Benjy never liked planning too far ahead in the future but he wanted one with them.
When it comes to their last year of high school things start to change again, his dad starts forgetting things, and then he forgets how to drive. It’s a phone call you never want to get from someone, he and his partner rush to the hospital and it’s then that he finds out that his father has early onset Alzheimers. All thoughts of the future are put on halt, Benjy makes it into college but it’s not the university that he wanted. He breaks up with his partner not long after he drops out and starts working full time at the bar and taking care of his dad.
Benjy doesn’t blow his life up like he used to but he did get into somethings that he shouldn’t have, and all he can think about is the people that had helped him along the way and how they would feel if they saw him now and what he does outside of the bar. It’s the only way to get money since his father is no longer capable of teaching.
At the heart of it, Benjy likes to think that he’s still good, his foundation is just a little cracked.
CONNECTION IDEAS:
Exes / First Love—i had mentioned this in his bio but will go more into it here, but he really loved this person, they were such a big influence on his life and he would talk about their future together because he wanted that for both of them. Eventually it just got to a point where he had to end it because it wasn’t fair—he thought that maybe they could go off and be the things that he couldn’t be which is mainly why he ended it—it wasn’t because he didn’t love them anymore. This could go with either m/f/n he’s bisexual so open to any gender <3
Childhood / High School Best friends—Honestly he needs a bestie, someone that’s been through it all with him and probably is the only one that actually knows how his dad is doing because they come by so often.
FWB—honestly he probably wouldn’t be that “friendly” with this person and would never bring them over to his house because that’s simply too personal, but they sleep together and that’s fine as long as he can leave at the end.
Client—so since he’s a drug dealer maybe he deals to your characters.
I’m open to anything else, this is just at the top of my mind!

𝐦 𝐲 𝐭 𝐫 𝐮 𝐭 𝐡﹔shq interview.
‘ can i just say that it’s been a long ass time since i’ve done one of these, so, like, don’t roast my ass. i’m nervous. just expect me to say what everyone’s too scared to say ─── also, is this gonna take all day ? i bought chipotle ‘nd i really wanna eat it, i’m pretty hungry. no ? okay. cool. ’
it’s rumored that your recent arrest is directly linked to shawn mendes. according to our sources, you absolved shawn of any wrongdoing and took the blame for the entire incident. in light of shawn’s actions, including the subtweets, and refusal to acknowledge you, do you regret it? do you wish you would’ve been honest about shawn’s involvement knowing that he would so easily turn his back on you?
whew, y’all are clearly startin’ off on some shit with these fuckin’ questions. but, uh, i promised that i’d be honest n’ willing to cooperate so …. do i regret takin’ the blame for shawn ? uh, for sure, just like any person in my situation probably would. i went from feelin’ like a caged animal cause of the paps, the fans, the meet n’ greets, camera’s all in my face, you know ? n’ this was before this shit got stuck to my ankle, mind you. to being an actual animal locked up in my crib all day. but for the sole purpose of him turning his back on me ? no, that would be an entirely new level of fucked up. keep in mind that this is comin’ from me. i’m not mad, or upset with shawn ─── alright, i am, but i would never drag ‘em back into this shit. it’s been complete hell for me inside n’ he’s struggling out there on the outside, so, who’s really winnin’ here ? i just want shawn to realize two things. one, being that i’ve always been there for him when it mattered the most. two, i need him. that’s what it comes down to. i want my brother back.
sofia carson confirmed in her interview that you two were seeing each other. given all that we know (and what is rumored to be true) about sofia, are you sure that you want to be in another relationship with an emotionally damaged woman? do you honestly see yourself with her in a longterm setting, or are you just living in the moment? and what is your opinion on her relationship with shawn? do you think cutting sofia off would heal your friendship with shawn?
ay, i’m already gettin’ claimed ? is she gonna see this ? hey baby, what’s up ? alright, let me stop. but, uh, am i sure ? dude, i have never been more sure about anythin’ in my entire life. i’m fucked up, she’s …. well, ‘ emotionally damaged ’ ─── i like that, can i use that ? but we just work well together, i think. she doesn’t call me out on my shit, or throw my past in my face, what we have is new n’ everyday brings us somethin’ new. as for whether longterm or not, did you ask her this question ? can i know her answer ? either way, i’m takin’ the day by day thing very seriously, so, yeah. i know it’s been a fuckin’ rollercoaster ride between ‘em two, comin’ from someone who has seen shit with his own eyes. you know ? n’ of course ya’ll are going to think that i hate ‘em if i say something bad, or want ‘em to be together if i can somethin’ good. but, quite honestly, i don’t care. just as long as sofia n’ i are okay, it’s whatever. oh, n’ for sure. cuttin’ off sofia would for sure land me back into shawn’s arms. is it right though for me to cut her off just to get my friend back ? nah.
your career has been on a standstill for a long time now. have you lost your passion for music? are you working on anything new? do you fear that your time is over with? and what about your recent release of your fashion line? is that something you can see taking over music in your life?
damn, i didn’t know this was turnin’ into a draggin’ session. thanks for knockin’ me off whatever pedestal i thought i was on, shit. i’ll have you know that i’ve been in the studio, whenever i have permission to, n’ ya’ll will be hearin’ something from me pretty soon. can’t say when, but your boy is never really over. yeah, ‘ drew house ’ has been somethin’ that i’ve been interested in for the longest fuckin’ time, but the time was never really right until now. you know ? it’s just somethin’ to do in the meantime while this whole music shit works itself out, honestly. plus, a superstar does a million things at once. that’s me.
you’ve been renown for your good looks. however, recently, it seems like you’ve stopped taking care of yourself. your fans have been worried about you. every time you’re seen out in public, you appear very solemn. how is your mental health doing? do you blame the chaotic people in your life (shawn, sofia, ariana just to name a few) for bringing you down? do you ever wish you had a different life? a different group of friends?
again, way to make a guy feel really fuckin’ good at himself here. thanks. but i’m fine, as fine as a guy could possibly be. i’m taking everything easy, doin’ things that make me happy, surroundin’ myself with a shorty who makes me happy, n’ everything under the sun. i also can’t point fingers at anyone since the only one who allows ‘em to take control of my emotions is me, so, yeah. different life ? nah, i know the impact my existence n’ my music has had on people, so takin’ that away would just be a slap in the face. what i’m about to say may be a slap in the face, too, but different friends would definitely improve my life. i mean, people think havin’ a hard exterior means there’s an equally hard interior, but that’s rarely the case. i stay in my feelings, and people just give up on me when i would go above ‘n beyond for ‘em. it’s the truth, and all of those people that you named know that shit. so … yeah, do i want a new group of friends ? doesn’t everyone ?
critics of your relationship with sofia would state she is using you to move on from shawn mendes. however, people neglect to remember your whirlwind romance with madelaine petsch that ended shortly before you began to see sofia. are you guilty of the same tactics? using someone else to get over another? and how has this affected your friendship with madelaine’s boyfriend, joe keery? are you two on better terms, or do you still resent him for intervening on your relationship with madelaine?
thought about that myself, n’ i just don’t get that vibe from sofia. call me crazy, stupid, whatever fuckin’ name in the book, but i genuinely don’t feel like she would do that to me ? nor would i do that shit to her ? that situation with madelaine happened months ago, which led to months of me actin’ up. i had my fun, did whatever i wanted to do n’ then sofia came along, let’s not. listen, i wouldn’t say that joe n’ i will be lickin’ whip cream from each other’s assholes anytime soon, but i’m over it. from what i’ve heard, they’re more than happy together, shorty even has a bun in the oven. like, tell me, should i still be dwellin’ over this situation ? no. she made her decision n’ whether or not i agreed, the only option would be to move the fuck on. so i did. simple. do i resent ‘em ? as a human, i’m sure that shit will always be in the back of my mind, but at this point, i just want that keery dude … hell, everyone too, to just be happy n’ leave my name outta their fuckin’ mouths. simple.
am i done ? hopefully i didn’t piss off too many people with my answers, but guess what ? the honest truth hurts sometimes n’ that’s the truest tea. uh, yeah, if you have a problem with me then beat my ass or just stop talkin’ about me ! it’s not rocket science. sofia, if you’re reading this, we made it ! we famous ! shawn, if you’re reading this … i miss you. n’ my final thing, can anyone tell me who this ‘ g r e g g ’ person is ? i’ve been hearin’ that name everywhere. weird.

greetings! i’m katara and this is my man, j ! he has a v sad backstory but still remains a radiant light of (badly humored) positivity, so be cautious with the soft pup that is james. i’m currently on break from school (yeah, who decides to go back to college at nearly 30 years old?) so there are times where i’ll be on and off, but i’m here for now!
( JOE KEERY + CISMALE ) — JAMES HARMON is a TWENTY-SIX YEAR OLD MECHANICAL ENGINEER who resides in EAST HERMOSA. He has been living in Hermosa Beach for THREE YEARS. Those who know him say he is ALTRUISTIC AND UPLIFTING on his good days, but can also be FLIPPANT and CIRCUMSPECT if you step on his toes.
trigger warning, this introduction (and his full biography) have mentions of: alcoholism, abuse, and mental illness.
a nerd through and through, j loves star wars, machinery and figuring out it’s innards, horror movies, paranormal/supernatural movies & shows, and he basically loves researching anything and everything! whether it be medical, history, weapons, true crime stories, anything else that piques his interest is on his browser history!
his only hobbies really are forms of robotics and repairing broken things, watching tv shows/movies, and playing drums. (he needed some sort of outlet growing up, so he saved up, bought himself a kit, and learned.) he can also play guitar, but drums are his main deal.
he was raised by a semi-functioning alcoholic mother (absent biological father). whenever she wasn’t able to get to work or take care of her six children, j was the parental figure for his siblings.
she was a waitress and usually made enough money to keep the family going (it was a very small, inexpensive town in Virginia), but as she became attached to a man, she would become flaky and that led to j get a job himself to supplement her income. it was a cycle and he was tired of it, so he eventually just began taking care of most things himself.
SO, he essentially raised all of his brothers and sisters. they turned out very well, btw. he taught them how to be respectful, hard-working, honest, and reliable. they worked together as a unit to keep the harmon house up and running.
eventually, someone had enough to the constant arrests his mother faced for defacing ex-boyfriends vehicles/houses or for causing a scene at the local pub, and called social services. the police were always understanding and would return lena harmon home safely (or take away a boyfriend who was losing his temper, usually aimed at the oldest, j, or his mother) for the sake of the kids. basically the whole town helped out in one way or another. but, whoever it was, ripped away all j ever knew. at 18 years old, he was left with only his mother (all of his siblings were under 18)
he didn’t want to be alone with his mother after she just kind of drank herself into oblivion from depression. j chose to internalize this depression and self-hatred for letting it happen. he kind of just began to save up. he found a new job outside of washington DC, began renting a shitty trailer, and applied for colleges in the area. last minute, he got into george mason university in fairfax.
four years, many mistakes, and a possible slight drinking problem developing later: j graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering.
because of his responsibility at home, j only ever made it to a handful of town events and only held a handful of friends, his best friend being his sister marni. but she was taken away. aside from her, he never really learned how to establish any sort of networking, professional or personal. (he held basically the same job his entire teen years too) so his professors helped him find a one-year contract job with a power company.
when that year ended, he packed up everything and moved to california, signed another contract, and began renting a place.
NOW his contract is about to end (after three years), he owns a very small house of his own, and has enough money saved up to take a break (but he prob wont since he’s sort of a work-a-holic).
he wants to take some time to focus on establishing friendships but is having a hard time opening up and being ok with people caring about him. he truly believes that every time he gets close to someone, something shitty happens. his siblings, his mother, even the friends he did have either moved away and never spoke to him again or met a tragic end from there being nothing else to do in their small town besides drink.
personality wise, he’s very jokey-jokey and supportive! but he gets embarrassed and anxious VERY easily. he’s also completely oblivious to basically anything that is more than platonic.
think of: 80’s horror classics, jean vests with patches, knock off ray bans, leather jackets, hand sewn/drawn artwork on clothing, “ghost hunting”, black coffee & cigarette smoke, high school sports tees, battered combat boots, halloween decor all year round, stacks of books lining the floor, 1984 Ford Ranger truck. Positive: altruistic, witty, intelligent, gallant, supportive, uplifting, loyal. Negative: circumspect, flippant, truculent, brash, guarded, pessimistic, anxious. The Black Hole: self-destructive and terrified. they destroy everything around them, including themselves, and they may or may not be conscious about it. they’re normally afraid of pulling people in with them.
this got long! sorry!

Hudson had always been the golden child of his family. He had no choice. While he was leading his siblings to greatness, they were far behind, mocking him.
He had always been into sailing and into baseball, doing everything he could to make his parents proud.
While he was a stand up kid, he also suffered from severe sarcasm and anger problems, something his mother graciously handed down to him.
He keeps his anger under wraps and always keeps himself busy so he never snaps but he’s running on empty. He’s bound to break any day.
Truthfully he’s just tired, in between playing baseball, going to school, playing in a band and most importantly, making sure his siblings didn’t get arrested… he just wanted a break.
RELATIONS
Derek Buchanan: Little brother that he will always care for but of course he’s not going to let him know that. Instead of a hug, Derek often receives a swat upside the head for acting up and trying to get himself in trouble. A classic relationship of cat and mouse. And while Hudson is trying to grow up, it seems like Derek and Baylee want to stay immature.
Quinn Ridgeway: After hooking up at a party where neither of them knew who they were, Hudson realized just how close Quinn was to his younger brother. Now he has to keep it a secret to protect his relationship.

“Molly’s Game” (2017)
Drama
Running Time: 140 minutes

Molly Bloom: “I’ll be hosting a game in this suite every Tuesday night. The first buy-in, two hundred and fifty thousand.”
Disappointment is the word that comes to mind after watching Aaron Sorkin’s directorial debut, “Molly’s Game” (2017) a film that is so unsure of itself and what it wants to be that the writer/director seems to have included just about every kind of plot device possible to make a coherent movie, none of which really come together, making this something that reflects everything that is wrong with Sorkin’s writing. That is the way in which characters communicate between themselves, as well explaining the plot to an audience, just a word of advice Mr. Sorkin, film is a visual medium, if I wanted almost two and a half hours of people talking I would listen to a podcast or audiobook, both would be more original and entertaining than this movie based on the memoir ‘Molly’s Game: From Hollywood’s Elite to Wall Street’s Billionaire Boys Club, My High-Stakes Adventure in the World of Underground Poker’ by Molly Bloom.
There is no doubt that Aaron Sorkin, at his best, can deliver a great television show like “The West Wing” (1999-2006) or an equally compelling film like “The Social Network” (2010), high minded liberal projects that not only attract great actors but are helmed by even greater producers and directors. Of course when Sorkin himself has control we get “Studio 60 on Sunset Strip” (2006-2007) and “Steve Jobs” (2015) two disappointing projects that both fell in love with dialogue over visuals as well as coolness over substance. Even though they had other directors these two pieces were utter disappointments, which suffer from similar issues to “Molly’s Game”.
This is the true story of Molly Bloom, a young woman who ran the world’s most exclusive high-stakes poker game in Los Angeles and New York City, for nearly a decade, before being arrested by the FBI. Her players included Hollywood celebrities, athletes, business titans and the Russian mob. With the help of her lawyer, Molly must face federal charges.
I have no doubt that when actors are offered or are aware that an Aaron Sorkin script is in the offering there must be a queue a mile long, after all if there is even a chance to appear in something that could be a ‘West Wing’ or ‘Social Network’ then you must grab it. That explains how the two leads; Jessica Chastain and Idris Elba are able to come aboard, as well as supporting actors Kevin Costner, Michael Cera, Chris O’Dowd and Graham Greene are cast. Chastain plays the title character of Molly as a vampish raccoon eyed femme fatale who seems to be smarter than everyone, except for the male lead of course, Idris Elba as her lawyer that acts as an audience substitute, who is explained to what is going on in the plot, with a narrative that is so full of flashbacks you will be forgiven for leaving the cinema with a case of whiplash. Both Chastain and Elba have suffered from the same fate in recent years, after bursting onto the scene with some memorable roles they have either had the leads in fairly ordinary as well as forgettable films, or, had flashy supporting roles in good films, but been relegated while the leads get all the glory. With “Molly’s Game” they are playing frankly unbelievable people who every time they want to make a point have to point out some arbitrary metaphor then meander to the point, supplying voiceover to action that is described then acted out – it is frankly a waste of their talents to ask them to perform these roles in a movie that begs to be directed by someone who knows the craft. The same can be said of the supporting actors who to have to act like characters out of a rat pack film, all too cool and knowing to be treated as real people.
That brings me to the script as well as the way the film has been structured, edited and shot. This should have been a slam-dunk of a film to direct but somehow Sorkin takes what is on the surface an interesting real life story turning it into a never-ending mess of constant set up, with very little pay off. In fact I struggled to see what the film was attempting to say but was just happy it ended after its marathon like running time. Not only does the main character constantly explain almost every flashback scene in voice over, but then the exact thing she talked about is acted out so we have many aspects of the movie done twice. As if that were not bad enough within each scene everything is painstakingly explained literally as well as in metaphor. Another aspect of the film is the meandering nature of it as well as the multiple sub plots that go nowhere as well as being reexamined at many points throughout the narrative, which lends to the running time of this quasi drama that wishes it were in fact a thriller – which it is not. There is a distinct lack of editorial decision making, firstly in the script, which I shudder to think how long that was, then in the actual edit room where I also do not want to think how long the possible first cut was. At times I found myself asking why certain scenes were present when they obviously should have been cut to streamline the movie into something that is actually compelling.
While this film is about Molly as a character as well as some kind of cautionary tale, one of the key problems is that there is often talk about the rich and famous but there are no real revelations about who these people were. Not only that there is too much time explaining (literally once again) why these names are not being mentioned which leads to a meta narrative that unfortunately does not work within the confines of this film. I can see it working in a book, but here it just falls victim to the narrative as a pointless endeavor.
Molly’s Game should have been a very good movie, with performances that could have captured the imagination; instead they are rote as well as staid and boring. When you have Jessica Chastain and Idris Elba the screen should be crackling and the audience transfixed to what is happening, not wondering when will this movie end. Not only that but for a film about poker it may have added to the narrative if Molly actually played the game. There is a section in the movie where the obviousness of her lack of agency exists where the players just decide to play somewhere different thereby negating any power she has. What is interesting about that is that audiences can do the same thing to Sorkin, that is leave and go to a better well thought out and visual film.
“Molly’s Game” is released on 1st February 2018 only in cinemas.

RELATIONS
Abel Holm: Opposites. And boy, does Hudson hate this guy. It was like a written obligation for them not to get along. The kid was always getting into trouble and he didn’t want anything to do with that, he already had to deal with enough of that as it is. And he was no where near relevance to him.
Emlyn Barrett: Sister figure. Of course he has a sister and loves her, but Emlyn has always been one to relieve stress from the boys life. Always being the only child, it was a nice change to have someone older and watching out for him.
Derek Buchanan: Little brother that he will always care for but of course he’s not going to let him know that. Instead of a hug, Derek often receives a swat upside the head for acting up and trying to get himself in trouble. A classic relationship of cat and mouse.
