A soft sigh left him. Of course Undyne would want to know more. Children were naturally curious, after all. That didn't make him want to part with the information any more than he had before, however.
'It isn't a happy tale,' Gaster warned, gaze turning serious. It was filled with bloodshed, pain, and loss. He certainly wouldn't be sharing all that with Undyne, but he needed her to understand why most of the Underground's previous soldiers keep their stories to themselves.
@the-scrappy-urchin asked: "What happened to your eye?" The fish asked the question before, but didn't get any answer
Bony fingers pick at his coat as Gaster peers off to the side. He does not want to answer this question. Maybe if he's really vague, Undyne will just let it be.
'The war," he signed, vaguely, eye light finally stopping to focus on Undyne.

The phone went unnoticed to Gaster, who was still busy being embarrassed by the entire situation. Maybe he should start wearing a watch- that way he wouldn't lose track of time so easily. Bony fingers tapped lightly against his chin as he considered the idea.
Gaster was pulled from his thoughts as he caught sight of Grillby's hands. 'Just ketchup,' he replied with a click of his teeth. 'On the side, if you don't mind.' He enjoyed a little bit of ketchup with his fries, but he didn't like them soaked in it, as some monsters did.
At the idea of delivery, Gaster tilted his skull. It would be easier for him to have his food delivered, but he really enjoyed the atmosphere of the bar from the few times he'd been inside. It was.. comforting, in a way. Perhaps welcoming was a better word. 'Thank you for understanding,' He signed, gratefully with a small smile. He still felt bad, but Grillby's reassurance made him feel a tad better about the situation. 'And I'll keep that in mind. It'd definitely be really helpful. But, I hope to keep better track of time for the next time I stop by.' He let out a small chuckle, and immediately cringed at the mechanical sound that it made. He peered over at Grillby, apologetically.
Starter for @bow-tie-bartender.
It had been a long few days in the labs. Gaster hadn’t been able to leave the night before, so he had simply worked through until his shift ended the next day. Actually, he worked past his shift end. It was late when he left Hotlands and took the Ferry to Snowdin.
The exhausted Skeleton took notice of the lights on inside of Grillby’s bar. He paused, thinking. It had been a few days since he’d had any real food to eat. With that decided, Gaster made his way to the front door and entered the building. What surprised him was the lack of patrons inside. Wasn’t the bar usually filled with Monsters?
Gaster’s eye light fell on Grillby as something clicked. ‘Are you closing for the night?’ His hands signed slower than usual, which was likely due to exhaustion. 'Sorry, I did not mean to barge in.’

Gaster nodded in understanding. He could tell Chara was flustered, so he decided to accept their answer and not bother them any further. Using his sleeve, the skeleton erased the board and started writing again. Understood. He paused, thinking. Some of my interns are working on science projects, while others run errands for me, he explained.
The Skeleton summoned an extra set of hands to hold the whiteboard and the marker, freeing up his actual hands. I can show you around the labs, if you'd like. I only have a few projects to review today. Gaster peered at Chara, eye light bright. He loved showing people his work space, even if he was a little jumpy with a human around. Maybe if he just treated Chara like the child they were, his fears would lessen? Unlikely, but one could certainly hope.
speaksinhands:
Gaster wasn’t surprised by the polite greeting Chara gave him. They were living with Toriel, after all. He found solace in that fact. Toriel was a great parent, which likely meant Chara was a good kid. Gaster just couldn’t get past the human portion of it all. This child was by no means a mage, but that didn’t help squash Gaster’s fear. An Irrational fear. He was scared of a child. What a stupid thing to fear.
The Royal Scientist clicked his teeth together at Chara’s words. Ah. Maybe using simpler sentences would help? He was thankful they could at least somewhat understand. But.. perhaps it would be easier to find a dry erase board? Gaster had a few lying around, as some of the Monsters he worked with didn’t understand his signing. So, the Skeleton held up a bony finger and momentarily disappeared into a near by room. Internally, he was thankful to have a moment to collect himself. It wasn’t long before he reappeared with a marker and a board.
Is this better? Gaster’s handwriting wasn’t the nicest (his handwriting was better when he wrote in his Font), but it was legible. He didn’t mind writing to communicate- especially since he could easily conjure up a magical set of hands to write for him when needed. Besides. This meant he would have Chara’s eyes off him and on the white board. I can always ask an intern to translate, he wrote after erasing his previous question.
Chara was a little puzzled by his sudden exit, but they assumed he knew what he was doing. What else could they do but wait? Their gaze darted around the room as they rocked back and forth on the balls of their feet. Even just in here, there was so much they wanted to ask about, so many questions mounting up on top of the heap inside their head.
They started a little as the scientist entered again, making a quick shift to fix their posture as they turned their attention back to him. Being able to read his words easily was a relief, and they almost began to relax - only to freeze up when he presented them with the choice. It wasn’t even about the translation, really. They could have handled it, one way or the other. It was the idea of making the wrong choice here without realising, of irritating him even more than they already had. The kid visibly tensed, silent for a few seconds - before realising that standing there panicking was just going make them look worse than any other option.
“Oh, uh-” They stumbled over their words, trying to get their thoughts in order. It was best to just play it safe, right? “-it’s fine. The board is fine. No need to trouble an intern.” True, there was a twinge of regret that they wouldn’t get to use the information they’d learnt, but it was better than spending the whole conversation terrified of missing a sign or interpreting his words wrongly. He was already having to deal with their presence here, he didn’t deserve an extra level of stress. “I’m- sure you’re all busy enough at the moment.” A slightly forced-sounding chuckle, as Chara attempted to pretend they actually knew what the hell they were doing here.

Send in "You're baby!" for a starter where my muse is child. Whether it takes place during their childhood, or they were somehow turned into a child again, is up to the asker.
