A jumble of thoughts for whatever it’s worth:

Since wifey talked to some people on stage at ACL, she got herself an Artist wristband. And probably a pair. I have a theory that this was the game-changer (pun intended) for Jared that resulted in Jared saying “fuck that con” and living it up beyond VIP instead. An Artist pass has to come with even more clearance and freebies.

The guy below also had an artist pass and got himself a selfie with Jared as well. His other pics have him on the wings of the stage looking out at the crowd. I would almost bet money that we see a post from Gen Brag-alecki this week from the same angle.

Before someone bullies this young lady into deleting this pic, let’s also note that apparently it was a family affair. And now this is what The League of Jared Defenders will use to infinity and beyond to excuse him cancelling his obligation:

I was also reminded that the male half of the couple behind the project that Gen was promoting is a friend of Jensen’s.

Somebody (or several) in that Spn crew is likely a private investor for this docuseries that will be airing on Texas PBS.

I’m not sure who was doing who a favor in this circle jerk of wealthy connections and vanity projects, but one thing is certain: Gen RARELY if ever gets an opportunity that can’t be traced back to knowing the right people…not her own résumé or charisma. *snorts*

Quick bio/extra facts:

Phin's longest and best friend is K'Sante, he was Phin's first tattoo client and soon became a regular. They bonded due to his recent visits, not just because he wanted more tattoos. With K'Sante's recent visits, they have met the rest of the guys including Yone. Phin is an introvert through and through unless you want to talk about any form of technology, they'll never shut up.

Phin had been hard of hearing pretty much since she came out of the womb, somebody had popped a confetti popper in the hospital room and pretty much damaged her barely formed eardrums. Along with her hard of hearing, their form of speech isn't the best, no amount of speech therapy has helped. So they use sign language to communicate. Phin originally would've been a triplet, yet she swallowed both her siblings in the womb. Yes, they are a natural blonde. Phin's bike was originally her mother's before she passed, and she's worked on it since she was 10. Now the bike is perfect, greatly matching her aesthetic. Despite being a tattoo artist Phin only has three tattoos, a heart tramp stamp, a band-matching tattoo behind her left ear, and a medium medusa tattoo on the right side of her pelvis.

To work their power, they often need some sort of sound hence the guitar. K'Sante had given the angel guitar to them for their birthday. Sometimes she'll use her powers on the guy's voices, to make them louder in case of a mic malfunction. Or just to hype up the crowd.

Phin knows how to sing, just thinks it'll mess up the band's vocal vibe. Their voice is a contralto. Kayn and Sett are the only ones who know about their voice. They were singing a bit too loud while cooking forgetting that Sett and Kayn were still at the house sick.

Now onto Yone & Phin's relationship. They're the intimidating and silent couple. Yet in the comfort of their own space, they're as sickeningly close and gross as it gets. They were definitely secret fwbs to lovers. They're the parents of the group, the guys often call them mom and dad(phin being dad and yone being mom). Yone knows how to do Phin's hair. Phin had gave every member and match tattoo yet Yone and Phin's are slightly different, have a tiny heart next to it.They guys didn't know about their relationship until Yone and Phin got caught making out on the couch.

Phin smells like sorbet, their favorite dessert is key like pie, and loves mango. Phin's eyebrows are dyed black. She always carries a camera on her when she travels just in case. The guys, especially Yone and K'Sante often go to them for fashion advice. Phin is actually quite thick despite their height.

She has quite a lot of scars around her lips and cheeks, hence her reason for wearing a mask. They had gotten the scars from a technological experiment exploding on her face.

If annoyed w/ any of the guys or upset, they'll take out their hearing aids and continue what they're doing. When their hearing aids are dead or for some odd reason, not working she'll place her hands on the guy's throats as they talk to further understand what they're saying. It's especially handy when the guys forget to sign to them. Since her hearing isn't the best the rest of her senses have heightened making her a hard target for Phel's pranks.

That's pretty much all I have so far. This OC really aligns with the HEARTSTEEL AU rather than the actual League of Legends lore, especially when I don't know nor do I play the game. I just love the song and the video that it has become my new hyperfixation. And I hope y'all enjoyed my OC.

Punk! Moon Fic (Rockstar AU)

I wonder how much of this counts as angst. I don’t think I’m very good at writing angst since life in general feels too angsty for my liking, so I go heavy on fluff. Anyways, this is like, third person but it follows Punk! Moon’s POV. Have fun! Thanks for the ideas, @kaleidoscopek9.

            Moon was strolling down a dark alleyway of the city. He’s been out for an hour and his battery was at 45%. Not bad all things considering. He hasn’t really had to exert himself all that much to hid, so he’s been enjoying looking up and round at the buildings and petting stray cats and dogs that aren’t scared of him.

            He rounds a bend and finds himself on a deserted street. Hardly any of the streetlights were on and it looked like a residential area of the city. Some of apartments were lit up and he could see people passing by the windows.

            Moon stood there, watching the windows for a long time. He wished him and Sun could join in a family like that. To be a part of a unit of people who love them for them, not just because they like their music or because they think they’re “sexy” or because of their talent.

            Moon lets a static-y sigh escape him as he takes a right and walks down the abandoned street.

            Moon had his eyes looking up as he walked, watching out for what stars he could see.

            As he walked, he heard music blearing out from somewhere. As he got closer to the sound, he looked ahead of himself and saw a little grocery store and he realized that it was his song, Moonlight Rapids, that was blaring.

            The grocery store was called Grandma’s Bodega.

            Moon looked through the giant window of the bodega and he saw someone using a broom as a guitar/mic as they sang wildly to the song.

            Moon smiled at the sight. It always makes him happy to see people enjoying his and Sun’s music. Moon’s smile got even wider when he saw that it was you. The little star that tricked them into signing marriage licenses.

            Before the better part of his circuitry could think, Moon was walking into the bodega, smug smile plastered onto his face.

            The music was so loud that the bell over the door was muted, and you didn’t react as he stood there watching you dance with the broom. Soon Moonlight Rapids was over, and you immediately perked up as the song I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me) started to play over the store’s speakers.

            You made to do a little twirl, but when you saw him, you jumped and screamed.

            Moon doubled over laughing at the look on your face.

            Soon he was the loudest thing in the building as the music was turned off and he was still laughing.

            “Are ya done yet?” you asked.

            Moon held up a finger as he reigned himself in. Then he stood back up to his full height. When he looked at your unamused face, he had to look away again and put a hand over his mouth.

            You click your tongue, “So. Mr. Moondrop. What brings you to my workplace? Can I get you anything?”

            Moon cringed at being called that.

            “Please,” he said, as he looked back at you, “Just call me Moon. Mister Moondrop’s my father’s name.”

            “You don’t have a father,” you said with a half-smile.

            Moon shrugged.

            You return his shrug and say, “Would you like a tour of my workplace, Moon, or do you need to get going?”

            He needed to get going, but he said, “I would love to see my spouse’s workplace.” He winked at you.

            You pouted at him as your face changed color, but you set aside the broom and gave him the tour.

            You told him the history of the bodega, and showed him pictures of a Mexican family and how they grew and thrived and made the bodega that the two of you are in. He saw little kid pictures of you with some of the kids, from the Mexican family in the bodega.

            He liked hearing about why there was a dint in this specific part of the bodega’s floor. He liked hearing why the shelves have to be shelved the way they are. He liked hearing about how Grandma keeps trying to set you up with her children in an attempt to make you more than just a family friend. He liked seeing all the nick-nacks and paintings and life in the store.

            It made him long for having something like this of his own even more, but it made him happy that you were willing to let him see any of it.

            “Is that my jacket,” you eventually say as you point accusingly at his chest.

            Moon looked down at himself as he blinked out of his longing.

            Looking back up at you he smiled smugly and said, “Technically, this is Sun’s. He loved the silly string and glow sticks by the way.”

            “Can I have it back please,” you asked.

            “Can Sun have his shirt back,” Moon asked in turn.

            You open your mouth, but nothing comes out. Then you close it with an annoyed grumble that made Moon chuckle.

            You roll your eyes and say, “Fine! It’s a trade then,” you stick out your hand.

            Moon takes it questioningly.

            You start shaking his hand.

            “Promise he’ll take care of it? It means a lot to me. It was the first merch I bought of you guys.”

            Moon’s smile softened, and he said, “Of course.”

            You nod, satisfied with that as you take your hand back.

            The entrance of the bodega rang, and Moon tensed up as he crouched down more.

            “Coming,” you yell, then quieter you said to Moon, “Go into the freezer. It’s the closest hiding spot.”

            You point him in the right direction, and you go to talk with the person who entered.

            Moon went into the direction you pointed and found the little freezer door you were talking about.

            As quietly as possible he opened the door and walked in.

            It was a small place, so if anyone walked in, he’d be immediately spotted.

            Moon stood in the dark for five minutes as he waited for it all to end.

            Mentally, Moon was berating himself for his stupidity.

            He shouldn’t have entered the bodega at all. He should have kept walking. If he gets caught, he’ll be leaving Sun behind. The company will take everything away from him, everything away from Sun. Sunny didn’t do anything wrong. It’s not fair. Why can’t they just live their lives?

            The freezer door opens, and Moon stiffens, but he only sees your face.

            You don’t say anything for a second as you see him stiff and scared.

            Moon tries to play it off.

            “Hey, thanks. I don’t need a group of fans following me when I don’t have security protecting me,” he said as he relaxed his stance and shoved his shaking hands in his pockets.

            You take a second longer to speak, then you said, “You’re not supposed to be out and about, are you?”

            Moon doesn’t say anything. The smile on his face is strained from not knowing what you’ll do next.

            You walk into the freezer and close the door behind you.

            “Don’t worry about cameras around here. They erase themselves at midnight every day. If you leave now, you won't be on the records by the time midnight rolls around. Will you be able to get home safely?”

            Moon stares at you for a few seconds, processing what you just said.

            You speak up again, thinking he's still nervous.

            “And don't worry about the police around here. We have their paroles memorized and they won't be coming to this neighborhood for a few hours more. You'll be able to leave freely.”

            Moon smiles softly at that and he moves forward. You back up and open the freezer door for him. You step out together.

            “Thank you. For everything.”

            You give the rockstar a sheepish smile, “I didn't do much, Moon.”

            “You did a lot for me,” he said.

            Moon walks away before he has a chance to see what your reaction would be from his words.

            Before walking out the door, he asked, “Will I see you at the next concert?”

            “Yep, I already have my ticket and everything,” you say, sounding absolutely excited for the future.

            Moon nods at you and says, “See you around, Angel.”

            Then he was out the door and heading home.

A/N: ... Okay, this is dark as hell. An idea I ran by @starchaser-the-prophet​​ and went through with because the idea itself made me interested to explore. First of all, this is another version of Mitsu. Where in which their birth parents ended up selling them to Overhaul, who is just as intrigued in their quirk as he does in the OG.

This is not canon.

This is a hypothetical.

What would happen if he was the candidate for the quirk marriage and succeeded in wedding them before they ran into Smite. Either way, this relationship is terribly unhealthy and illegal.

This version is nicknamed by Overhaul himself.

Their nickname is “Kiyoi” which means “noble”... And “pure”.

"Angel."

The term of endearment flooded the nearly empty room, coupled with the unattractive creaking of the door. It was actually cringe worthy, annoying, and in clear need of fixing. Sight of the dimly lit space was also slightly straining to the eyes, much to the doctor's dismay.

Brows pulled together just slightly in disapproval, Overhaul allowed himself to get used to the change in lighting. The door swinging shut behind him.

Gaze flickering around the space, he paused mid-step in his search of the space when the sound of water met his ears.

Along with the radio spilling the drivel of that pro hero, Present Mic. "This next song is an oldie but a goodie, an song straight from the states! This is "Tonight You Belong to Me" by Patience and Prudence!!"

The notes of an piano along with a snare of a light drum, upbeat and bright. He feels his shoulders fall just slightly, though his expression remained.

"i know, you belong to somebody new...

but tonight, you belong to me..."

A moment passed before the water shut off, the click of the radio switching off following. He turned his head towards the bathroom door just as a slight fog of steam billowed out.

"Kai...?"

Overhaul preens at the call of his given name, pleased to hear it after being around filth and incompetent beings with no business living or breathing the same air. It leaves him with a pleasant warmth crawling under his skin, gaze falling upon the figure slipping from the bathroom.

Cheeks flushed from the shower, a pure white towel pillowing against slightly wet skin, still weighed down with water. Eyes peering innocently at him betwixt fluttering lashes.

You were a welcome escape from the monotony.

A clean escape.

A polished diamond among coal.

"Kiyoi, angel..." He nearly crooned, finding satisfaction how two simple words made goosebumps break across your flawless skin.

How you flustered so quickly at his very presence, turning into a mess under his attention.

So sweet and so pure.

Like your namesake.

Slowly, he seats himself on the couch, lifting a gloved hand and holding it out. There was no need to speak, as you hung the towel to dry and rushed over him. It was amusing how eager you were to sit with him or rather, on him.

Drinking in how the pencil skirt stretched over the plush of your thighs, he shifted as you settled one of his. The light sheen of stockings on your soft skin elicited a low noise from his throat, pleased to see in the items he'd chosen for you. Reclining slowly into the leather couch, the man relaxed.

With a half nod given, arms snaked around the back of his head. He leaned forward just so to allow you the space, hooded gaze crossing your's.

"How was your day?" The soft inquiry came, the mask around his head loosening under nimble hands.

A low sigh slipped from between his lips once he breathed in the filtered air, lavender clinging to your clean scent. His own hand grazed over the fabric of the sweater, settling upon the curve of your hip and carefully drew you against him.

"Exhausting." His fingertips delicately slid over the dip of your waist, serving to only pull you even closer to him. "Being surrounded by those uncouth businessmen put me in a bad mood."

Nose carefully nuzzling against the side of your head, greedily taking in the sweet smell with fervor. His hold tightened when you shuddered, warming up under his touch and stare.

"Make me feel better, won't you, angel?"

Kai's eyes lingered upon the plush of your lips giving as you pursed them, how you leaned against him. Baring his neck to you with purpose.

Taking notice of your hesitation, the flush dusting over the bridge of your nose, he has to resist smiling.

You should be honored.

You likely were.

He doesn't show weakness so openly or often, nor give affection in this manner.

He is very aware of how enticed you are by his looks.

"Don't make me wait."

How you traced the pads of your digits up along the fabric of his dress shirt send a thrill through him, nervously tugging at the tie wrapped tight against his throat.

It was almost uncomfortable.

But it didn't last as the knot loosened, becoming undone almost agonizingly slow.

Were you teasing him?

Turning his head just so, he could smell the mint on your breath. How it ghosted over his lips in the most tantalizing of ways as he focused on the pretty darkening of your cheeks.

Kissing you was something he barely does, but he'd be lying if he didn't enjoy it.

Closer and closer he came.

"Boss."

A throb settled in the back of his skull, the beginnings of a headache. Suppressing the snarl that threatened to rise in his throat, your head dropped onto his shoulder with a long exhale. He grunted as he feels the arm draped around him settle on his hip, goose-flesh rushing over his body when your soft lips touched the side of his neck

Only to mumble against his feverish skin, "Duty calls."

Chisaki sighed, still holding you.

"Come in."

The door swung in and Kai fixed Chrono with a stare that could freeze blood, but he just bowed his head. He knew better than to interrupt if it was something poultry.

Leaning his body against the leather cushions, he drawled, "What is it?"

"Bubaigawara Jin and Toga Himiko have arrived."

He breathed lowly out of his nose, eyes shutting for a moment to quell the pain drumming in his brain. With a light squeeze, he'd finally let go.

"Tell them to wait another minute."

Reknotting his tie, he flicked his fingers to shoo his right hand from the room. As the door clicked shut, he peered down at you, almost contrite. Tenderly, his fingers trace over your cheekbone.

His voice dropped, just low enough for you to hear.

"I'm sorry Angel."

Turning your head, your lips touched the tips of his gloved fingers.

The sweet call of them begged him kiss them especially as you spoke, "You're busy. I understand."

Overhaul swiped his hand under your chin, tilting your head back. Your legs buckle and the corners of his lips drag into that devilish smile that never failed to make your heart race...

Though not in the way one would be with one's spouse.

With the quickening of your pulse, it was unmistakable.

That fear mixed with want to please him.

Good.

He didn't want you getting too full of yourself.

He loved you, naturally.

But if he didn't teach you, you'd never learn.

"I am forever blessed." He sighed, brushing his nose over your's.

"K - Kai..." The quaver of your tone made a pleasantness crawl under his skin.

Gold irises glimmered as he watched tears flood those pretty eyes he adored. Stroking his finger under your chin, he listened to your breath hitch.

He was so close.

Tightly squeezing you to his chest, he purred, "Remember Angel, I own you."

You only trembled.

A quivering whimper escaped as he kissed you, as he was dying to do. The gentle jingle of the chain around your neck made him smile, sighing at the taste of mouthwash lingering behind.

He felt you shake.

Adorable.

He supposed he himself was lucky.

You were clean.

So perfect and compliant.

His.

If he'd have to tear you apart to keep you, he would.

But he knew you'd stay.

You didn't have a choice.

Betting for a date

Hizashi bets. A lot. This time his bid comes in the shape of his husband, Aizawa Shouta

As a joke and a way to have fun, Present Mic bet his husband to be somebody else’s lover for two days. Unexpectedly, U.A’s staffs eyes were red with lust at the announcement. Unknowingly, a certain student of Eraserhead was accidentally there.

His own husband was mad by the time he knew he was sacrificed for his spouse’s bet.

What’s worse was the fact that his husband lose and the next day he was supposed to be Midnight’s lover.

After his scandalous days with Midnight (without any funny business), he was ushered once more by Kan a.k.a Blood King.

It was probably because Kayama was his long time friend that he wasn’t very anxious spending his days with her. But Kan was not his best friend. He was even more nervous when he realized Kan has a dog while he was cynophobic.

His days end and the next day he somehow monopolized by his whole class. His whole class who gathered their money for gambling with Present Mic.

He sighed when he enter the dorm, thinking about his doomsday.

“Sensei!!!” Mina and Hagakure hugged his waist.

Before he could be frozen from the unexpected gesture, his hand was taken by Kirishima and Bakugou.

Mina glared when Aizawa was taken over from her clutch.

“We have talked about this racoon eyes! Sensei is ours until evening!”

Mina still glared, but her hand on Aizawa fell back.

“Fine! But Sensei is here on 6 p.m!”

“Yeah yeah”

Aizawa was undoubtly shocked to see his students fighting over him.

“Come on, Sensei!”

Kirishima sent him a blinding smile from his right side.

Aizawa nodded and surrendered to his fate when he saw Bakusquad and Shoji, Fumikage, and surprisingly Kouda in Ground Beta. They all wore their practice uniform.

“We would like for you to practice with us, Sensei!!”

“Hurry up, Sensei! It’s already eleven o’clock!”

Aizawa practiced with his students until it was near two p.m. Drenched in sweat and trying to not smile from his students enthusiasm with practicing, he didn’t notice several figures on the side. He just realized their presence when someone yelled.

“Kacchan! It’s two o’clock!”

Bakugou, who was charging to him stopped suddenly. The blast in his hand diminished quickly. He clicked his tongue in annoyance.

Then his hand was taken by Midoriya, who was dressed nicely for once, to the side where Todoroki stood. Both of them wore long sleeves shirt and All Might jackets. Next to him was Satou Rikido and Aoyama Yuuga.

The next minute, he was taking a shower.

When he had dried his body and hair, he looked outside to find his hero suit was gone. In replace of it was a black long sleeve turtle neck and a pair of jeans. His underwear was embarrassingly a new one but the clothe was soft and smelled of his own detergent. They probably asked Hizashi to sent them his clothes.

After he came outside the bathroom, Ochako and Tsuyu was there. A comb, rubber band, and several hair clip were in their hands. He took a seat on one chair that was prepared for impromptu saloon.

When he was outside the dorm, Midoriya and the other was there. Including Bakugou, Kirishima, and Kaminari.

“You look great, Sensei!”

“That really suited him! You’re a great fashion guru, Bakubro!”

His next stop was inside a cinema with probably half of his class surrounding him while they were all watching some kind of horror movie. Aizawa bought them 5 packs of popcorn bags to share. One of them was finished by the advertisement end.

When the movie was finished, he once again found himself lead to a mall where apparently the girls were.

Bakugou and Mina was still glaring at each other.

“6 p.m sharp! Thank you, guys!”

“Whatever ponytail. See you later, Sensei”

Why..he was just handed to another pack of his students.

They took both of his hands and together they went from one store to another. Aizawa was sitting on each store’s seat while sometimes become a mannequin or dummy. He didn’t mind accompanying his students window shopping apparently.

Around 8 p.m, they went back home to find himself in a black v neck shirt and sweatpants. The girls were playing with his hair, braiding and other things he didn’t bother to know. Sometimes they gossiped while asking him advice here and there. He grunted sometimes, nodding, and giving answers he hoped would satisfy them.

When he opened his eyes in the morning, the girls were splayed all around him. The nearest was Ochako whose hair was on his mouth and Hagakure’s hand on his chest.

The day was spent once again outside but with his whole class this time to Asakusa Temple. It was like school trip once again but with less stress on his mind.

His date time ended when they went to a cat cafe in Akihabara. It’s his favourite cafe. On one of the window was a familiar blonde with one of the cafe patron, Hikage, on the table near his cappuccino. Hizashi was off his hero suit and wore a red cardigan over his white shirt. He looked like a statue on Louvre rather than a human whose spouse is Shouta.

“Zashi”

“Shouta!! Hey guys!”

Hizashi stood from his seat. Hikage leaped down to his feet. His spouse gave him a quick peck on the lips to signal the whole date is finished.

Aizawa turned back to watch his students smiling happily.

“Thank you for the date, Sensei! We have so much fun!”

“You too, Yamada-Sensei! Thank you for the opportunity!”

“We hope you enjoy it too, Aizawa-Sensei!”

Aizawa was taken aback. He thought that his students wouldn’t like having him near them all the time, what with dorm system and such. Apparently his student bought his time with the money they gathered. He might need to spent more fun times with them and join their practice rather than lounging and napping all the time.

“I enjoy it. Thank you for having me for the past two days”

It was worth it when their smiles getting wider.

“Later on, just confront me if you want something from me, whether a pajamas party or practice or watching movie”

When his students left, they were still brimming with happiness and joy.

Maybe Hizashi’s bet was not so bad.

Heather’s eyebrows lifted but she held still when Valencia brushed back her curls and attached the earpiece. “Surveillance headsets again, huh? Doesn’t really say ‘small, intimate affair,’ does it?” 

“Just because this is a vow renewal and not a wedding doesn’t mean I’m willing to stop being efficient and detail-oriented,” Valencia replied while pushing her corresponding receiver into place. “I have a reputation to uphold, even when the event is for someone I know. Especially then, so prospective clients will see that I maintain my standards at all times. Besides, Paula is one of our closest friends. I want this to be perfect for her.”

“Totally. She deserves it,” Heather concurred. “I’m down for pulling out all the stops. I just wanna check that you’re not making more stress for yourself when you don’t have to.”

“I think Paula and I have established a balanced arrangement.” Valencia nodded toward the mauve binder on the table. “Elegant but not elaborate. A touch of class, but still cute and fun.”

“Okay, if you say so. I know you’ve both put a lot of hours into brainstorming.”

“Yes, we have.” Valencia plucked up the mic with one hand. She caught the neckline of Heather’s shirt between the thumb and forefinger of the other.

“You know, the last time I helped you with one of these, you let me put the headset on myself,” Heather commented as Valencia made adjustments.

Valencia secured the speaker near Heather’s heart. “Last time, I wasn’t revisiting a familiar activity.” She lightly grazed one fingernail over the sensitive skin below the fabric before withdrawing both hands from Heather’s chest.

Heather held her gaze and smirked. “It’s a nice change, but I’m glad that suit has stayed the same.”

Valencia angled so the fitted pants could be admired in profile. She winked. “I thought you might like to see it again.”

“Solid guess.” Heather clipped Valencia’s microphone for her and smoothed the cloth around it.

“I haven’t used these in a while.” Valencia regarded the equipment with concern. “We’ll need to try them out.”

Heather rested her forehead against the hollow of Valencia’s throat and spoke in a hushed tone while she activated the nearby speaker. “Assistant Coordinator to Head Coordinator. Test -- one, two, three.”

Valencia rolled her eyes even as her fists disappeared in Heather’s hair. “You are the worst. I meant checking over distance. March it outside, wise-ass.”

Heather kissed Valencia’s nose before following orders. “I’m on it.”

She left through the back door and strode parallel to the house until she reached the edge of the property. 

Valencia’s voice traveled over the comm. “Okay, that’s probably far enough. Can you hear me?”

Heather turned to peer into the distant window at Valencia, who was standing on tiptoe as she strained to keep sight of her girlfriend. “All clear,” Heather verified, “but there’s a tiny woman in black watching me from my kitchen. She’s either a lost stagehand or an easily distracted robber. I think I’m gonna have to investigate.”

Valencia’s tongue tucked into her cheek and her eyebrow arched. “Are you going to be like this all day?”

Heather tried to appear contrite, but she knew Valencia could detect the poorly-suppressed grin when she spoke. “Sorry. Serious now.”

“Mm-hmm.” Valencia crossed her arms, unconvinced. “I’m going to need your word of honor.”

Heather strolled back across the lawn. “Have you and Rebecca been watching period pieces again? Nobody in this era talks like that.”

“Somebody does now.” Their eyes met when Heather drew closer to the glass, and the slight edge in Valencia’s tone softened. “It’s just really important to me for everything to flow smoothly.”

Heather came back inside and crossed the floor. She wove her fingers between Valencia’s and clasped. “Like you said, everything’s under control. Plus I’ll help with whatever you need from me. Best behavior. I promise.”

Valencia freed one hand to access her mic. “Head Coordinator to Assistant Coordinator?”

Heather played along and did the same. “Yeah?”

“I'm thankful you agreed to be part of this. I know I get tightly-wound when I’m working.”

Heather’s eyes flicked appreciatively over Valencia’s pantsuit. “You can growl commands in my ear any day.”

Valencia blushed in spite of herself. She gave Heather a peck on the cheek. “Good to know.”

Valencia carefully slid the curler free from the cluster of auburn locks. She stood back to let Paula get a proper view of herself in the mirror. “There. All set.”

“You girls are gonna spoil me,” Paula declared while she turned her head from side to side. “I can’t remember the last time styling my hair didn’t involve trying to brush my teeth and yell to Tommy down the hall at the same time.”

Valencia conducted a final scan of her friend’s pale pink dress. “Well, today you won’t have to handle a thing except carrying that bouquet and reading your vows. Rebecca has your index cards.”

Paula caught Valencia’s palm as she smoothed her sleeve. “Thanks again for helping me make it all happen. I’ve actually had a lot of fun cooking up plans with you.”

Valencia beamed. “Me, too.” 

Paula extended her other hand to reach for Heather. “And thank you for helping me do my makeup. You saved me from a dangerous combination of jitters and mascara.”

Heather ran her thumb over Paula’s knuckles with a small smile. “Anytime.”

“All right, come here. We’re doing a group hug.” Paula tugged them both toward her. 

Heather’s and Valencia’s arms overlapped when they leaned into the embrace. 

Valencia rested her chin on Paula’s shoulder. “You look beautiful, by the way.”

Paula tightened her grip affectionately. “Back at ya, honey.”

The door flew open and Rebecca bustled into the room. “Okay, Father Brah’s waiting in Hall A. Josh has the tech rigged and ready. I think we’ve g-- Ah! Perfect timing. Hold it right there. I’m coming in.”

The girls giggled and maintained the pose so Rebecca could throw her arms wide to envelop them all. 

Valencia disengaged with obvious reluctance. She gave the hem of Heather’s blouse a tug to get her attention. “We’ve got a few last-minute concerns to take care of, but we’ll see you in there. Rebecca, you’ll hold down the fort?”

Rebecca saluted and replied in a voice that sounded like several British regions blended into one. “I won’t let you down, ma’am.”

Heather and Valencia stepped into the hallway and shut the door behind them. Valencia blinked rapidly as her mid-event agitation kicked back into gear. “She’s doing accents now.”

Heather’s lips turned up at the corner. “And you were worried about keeping me in line.”

They veered to the right and spotted Brendan with Tommy waiting outside the bathroom for Scott. Brendan fished something metallic out of his inside pocket. He turned it over between his fingers. 

Valencia changed course and zipped past him, snatching the item out of his possession without breaking stride. Brendan jumped but did not fight the confiscation. The blazing look he received was enough to stop him in his tracks.

“Not on your mom’s special day,” Valencia snarled through gritted teeth. 

“It’s a Swiss Army knife!” Brendan protested with his hands lifted in surrender. “I just needed the toothpick!” 

Valencia shot him a parting skeptical glare and turned on her heel. “Tell it to the hand, Silas Botwin!” she called when she swept away.

Tommy offered a belated greeting. “Hi, Heather. Haven’t seen you since RenFaire. Cool necklace.”

Heather gave them a jokingly formal nod. “The Brothers Proctor. Yeah, um, thanks. I’ve gotta go before she finds out Brah’s going to rap about Jesus or something.”

Heather jogged to catch up with Valencia. 

Brendan waited until she was out of earshot before he nudged Tommy. He mimicked his brother’s voice. “‘Cool necklace.’ Good going, Buttface. Real suave.”

Tommy narrowed his eyes. “Heh heh heh. That’s funny. You know what else would be funny? If I told Valencia about that Scottish knife in your sock.”

“It’s a sgian-dubh and it’s ceremonial - you know that - but fine, all right, point taken.”

The final preparations were made without further incident. Invitees from the law firm and warehouse settled in foldable chairs while Josh piped instrumentals through a strategically hidden sound system. Valencia’s attention was divided in at least half a dozen directions as the start time approached, verifying that all participants were following their cues, but Heather managed to guide her to a spot in one of the front two rows. 

The next classical selection played. Entrances at either side of the hall swung wide. Darryl and Mrs. Hernandez held the doors to the left so Paula could step through them. Hank and Sal from the barbershop quartet cleared the way for Scott on the right. Brendan moved forward to extend an arm to his mother and Tommy escorted his dad. The spouses met in the middle of the room and their sons took seats nearby.

Valencia calmed somewhat now that the first phase was well underway. Her hand found Heather’s and rested on her knee. Father Brah said a few words about Paula and Scott, touching briefly on their history as parishioners and his increased familiarity with them through counseling. He led a short prayer - devoid of improvisation, much to Valencia’s and Heather’s relief - and then introduced the guest speaker: Rebecca.

She rose from her chair beside Valencia to stand before the temporary podium. Heather could see her hands trembling when she adjusted the microphone. Rebecca unfolded a piece of paper and smoothed it flat.

“Um, hi, everyone. I thought a lot about what I would say today. As all the people in this room already know, I’m Rebecca Bunch. But, to Paula, I’m Cookie. I call her Mama. Brendan and Tommy have actually been really cool about that, so, thank you both for letting me be an honorary member of your family.” 

She found the boys in the front row and smiled. Tommy inclined his head. Brendan thumped a fist against his chest. 

Rebecca laughed and continued. “In the time since she became my best friend, Paula has helped me learn so much about love. She has an encyclopedic knowledge of vampire romance novels and rom-coms from the last four decades, but the best way she has taught me true love is by example. Her heart is so full and so fierce that, when you have her in your corner, it's like no problem is truly insurmountable. I know Scott feels the same, and that’s a major part of what brings us here today. Scott and Paula got married a little shy of two decades ago, and they’ve experienced a ton of life events together -- good, bad, and everything in between. Some of the problems would have broken a weaker bond, but they are standing before us now stronger and more committed than ever. Their journey kind of rattled a revelation loose in my brain recently. This is the sort of thing that seems obvious in retrospect, but it’s hard to genuinely understand until you encounter it in real life. As much as I’ve always loved sweeping fictional romances, and I probably always will, love is a lot more than that first choice we see in stories. It’s the ongoing choices we make, day after day, to stick by each other through all the years that follow. Voluntarily Ever After. It’s saying, ‘I can get by on my own, but I will save room for you. When I face the highs and lows of this life, you’re who I want by my side.’ The new engraving on their wedding bands commemorates that lasting devotion. Paula, Scott, do you wanna tell everyone what’s written inside?”

Scott’s hands clutched Paula’s while he recited the first half of the inscription. “In any universe...”

Paula beamed tearfully and squeezed his palms. “... I’d pick you.”

Rebecca blinked to contain her emotions before turning back to the assembled guests. “To wrap this thing up, and in honor of a couple that is embracing something new built on an old foundation, I decided to share a traditional reading with a fresh twist. In keeping with my proclivity for fairy tales, this passage comes from one. My dearest friend deserves only the finest in the world, so I’ve chosen a quote from the most epic fairy tale of all time: the Bible. The beginning should ring a bell; after all, why veer from a classic? But I couldn’t resist making a few little personalized tweaks and, well, you’ll understand in just a sec.”

She flipped her paper and took a deep breath. 

“‘Love is patient. Love is kind.’ It is being ready to do the work. It is passing through the Ring of Fire. It is heart-to-heart conversations over late night pie at your kitchen counter. It is somehow turning evening game shows and study sessions into couple bonding activities. Love is agreeing Thelma & Louise Brad Pitt is still the dreamiest Brad Pitt. It is making memories in moments big and small, whether it’s finally taking a vacation or playing board games around your dining room table at home. Love is finding your own path. When you travel that path, and find the one you love, you should hold on tight.”

Valencia’s fingertips curled against Heather’s hand. Heather returned the pressure and shifted across her seat until their sides touched. Though they kept their attention on Rebecca’s speech, both indulged in a private smile.

The ceremony was a vision of pastels and mood music, but the reception provided a burst of rich colors and myriad sounds. Rebecca tested pretzel flavors from her new shop in addition to the catered cuisine -- a table beside which Nathaniel lingered beyond plausible explanation given that he wasn’t even holding a plate. Darryl and Maya reenacted their viral dance from YouTube. Tim and Jim fenced with sword picks from the hors d'oeuvres platter.

Once everyone made their first trip through the buffet line, Josh turned down the current track from his set list for an announcement. “All right, party people, let’s make some noise for the West Brovinas!”

Paula stole a glance at each Gurl Group member in turn but politely set aside her cutlery to listen. The men assembled in front of her table to croon “Bright Was the Night.” Though being the center of attention was clearly not something Paula enjoyed, the visible displeasure faded over the course of the performance as she looked into Scott’s eyes. His sincerity was disarming. When the final note faded, he stepped forward with hat in hand. Scott bent low, lifted the boater to hide their faces, and spoke words only his wife could hear. Paula pulled him in for a kiss while onlookers clapped.

Heather witnessed the highlights of the evening, but following Valencia took up every spare second in between those moments. They made countless circuits around the rented space until she started to regret her choice of footwear. When cake was served, all that remained was general socializing and celebration. Heather used that opportunity to still Valencia’s frenetic pacing with a caress along the underside of her elbow.

“What is it? What’s wrong? Did I miss something?”

“Yeah, the part where you take a breath and have a good time with our friends.” Heather wrapped her arms around Valencia’s middle. “Babe, it’s almost the end of the night and you haven’t sat down once since we left the other hall. I don’t even know where our food is because we ate on-the-go and put it down somewhere.” 

“If I don’t stay focused, nothing gets done,” Valencia said defensively. “That’s what being a party planner is. It’s like being a conductor or a director. I have to know how everything fits together and see it through from start to finish.”

“Which you’ve done, hella thoroughly, as always. There’s a gap in the schedule until cleanup. For the sake of our arches, can we just slide these shoes off and take an actual break?” Heather protruded her lower lip.

Valencia tried to glower, but it wouldn’t stick. “All right, but my shoes are staying on. I don’t think they mopped very well.”

Heather shook her head with a chuckle. “Close enough. So, are we gonna talk about the other reason your Boss Lady mode is cranked to eleven tonight?”

Valencia broke eye contact and stepped backward. “What do you mean?”

“This job is important because you care about the guests of honor, but you’ve also got something to prove.”

Heather studied Valencia’s features while the latter fidgeted. 

“No more than usual.” Valencia feigned interest in a centerpiece.

“Bullshit.” Heather’s assertion was gentle, her stare unwavering. “This is your first time running the show on your own since Beth.”

Valencia glanced in Heather’s direction but could not lift her gaze. “It’s fine. I don’t need her.”

“No, you don’t,” Heather agreed, “but it’s understandable if something feels off and you’re nervous about the transition. You were together for, like, nine months. As partners in more than one sense of the word. Nobody’s expecting you to just bounce right back from it. Sure, you’ve moved on relationship-wise, but other pieces are still settling into place. You and I both know there are a bunch of little recoveries that come with separating your existence from someone who was part of it for that long.”

“It sucks.” Valencia stamped her foot. “I understand it’s my fault for mixing personal and professional, but I don’t want what happened to cost new business if clients don’t trust me to juggle responsibilities. You wouldn’t believe the competition out there or how fast they can spread any gossip that gives them an advantage. All it takes is a single seed of doubt.”

Heather held Valencia’s face between her palms. “You were always really good at this. That was true before, and I think it’s even more so now. Look around. Everything in here was all you. People are having an amazing time. That photographer’s getting kick-ass photos for your website. No one is going to dispute that you’ve got the necessary skill set. The only one left who needs to believe that is you.”

“Easier said than done.” Valencia sighed. “You know how my mind works. Even if strangers don’t say bad stuff about me, some part of me is convinced they will.” 

Heather shrugged. “Then prove them wrong. The real voices and the ones you imagine. Also, in the meantime, go easy on yourself. The two of you had a rhythm. You just need a chance to get your groove back.”

Valencia’s mouth twisted. “How you would you advise I do that?”

Heather removed Valencia’s earpiece and mic, then her own, and pocketed them all. Valencia reached for the comms instinctively but let the theft go uncontested. “Maybe,” Heather posited, “what you need is to get your groove on.”

Valencia raised her eyebrows. “That’s your solution? ‘The Cha Cha Slide’ will cure my insecurities?” Her expression shifted and her head tilted to the side. “Wait, are you asking me to dance?”

“That pretty much sums it up, yeah.” Heather rocked back and forth on her feet. “Do you want to, or...?”

Valencia did not reply aloud. She simply led Heather by the hand toward the dance floor as a slow song began.

“Okay, I’m reading that as a ‘yes.’” Heather grinned playfully. 

Valencia’s lips twitched and her wrists crossed behind Heather’s neck. “Just shut up and hold my hips.”

Heather complied with a laugh. She nuzzled Valencia’s hair and closed her eyes.

“It’s funny,” Valencia remarked, “but when you, Josh, and Scott were working on the music, I was pretty sure I heard that you get a rash from ‘all the Ed Sheeran flavor of shamelessly sugary crap.’”

“Oh, I do,” Heather insisted without missing a beat. “I’ll be covered in hives within the hour, so, let that be on your conscience.”

Valencia snorted. “It’s very romantic of you to endure a ballad-based allergy for me.” 

“I know.” 

Valencia winced and groaned. “I might reconsider your earlier suggestion about the shoes. These heels hurt like hell.” She leaned against Heather’s shoulders. “What are the odds of you carrying me to your car when all this is over?”

“Considering my back problems continue to exist? They aren’t in your favor. If you’re hurting that much, I’ll try because I love you; just know we might not get very far.”

They stopped swaying. Heather gulped.

“Wow,” Valencia murmured. “You said it. We haven’t... That was the first time.”

“Yeah.” Heather's eyes widened and her jaw clenched. “Shit.”

Valencia pulled away enough to see her. “Did you not mean it like that?”

“I meant it,” Heather confirmed, “but no pressure at all. That was super early. I won’t be pissed if you’re not there. We were literally talking about everything you’re dealing with, like, two minutes ago. It was just... a fact.” She lifted her shoulders helplessly.

Valencia coaxed Heather forward until their foreheads touched. She traced her thumbs over Heather’s cheekbones and along her jaw. “If you’re too fast, then so am I, because I’m completely in love with you.” Valencia exhaled shakily. “I’d argue that ‘early’ depends where you’re counting from, because we’ve already been there for each other through a lot. Will other people think it’s quick? Does it retroactively call my past two relationships into question because this one is so natural by comparison? Honestly, I’ve realized that I don’t give a damn. I spent enough time pretending to feel things when I didn’t or not feel them when I did, and I’m done. This is the truth and I’m not apologizing for it.”

Heather enfolded Valencia in her arms. They kissed through the end of the ballad but took no notice. Midway through the next song, they resumed dancing. Valencia’s cheek rested on Heather’s biceps while she observed their friends and the circular lights that intersected on the floor. Heather saw Maya at a table watching them, both hands over her heart and mouth forming what looked suspiciously like the word ‘goals.’ Heather’s shoulders shook at the exaggerated reaction but that did not prevent a pleased flush of heat from spreading down her back. She cradled her girlfriend closer and breathed in the smell of her perfume.

“You were right,” Valencia mumbled against her skin. “Dancing actually did make things better.”

Heather smiled. “I surprised even myself with that one.”

“Really? I couldn’t tell,” Valencia teased. She slid her index finger up to the tattoo of Wilbur the Robot and traced a heart over his chest. “I’m talking about my outlook too, though. At least for the moment, I’m feeling less overwhelmed. Carrying on with planning by myself isn’t a defeat; it’s a comeback.”

Heather brushed her lips over Valencia’s forehead. “I’m glad we agree.”

Valencia relaxed and heaved a contented sigh. “Whatever else happens from here, I’ll be able to face it. I have everything I need.”

Aria and Leo pull up to the palace around 5:30, they were to met Liam, Constantine and Regina for dinner. Aria stares out the passenger side window, anxiety starting to make her panic a little. Leo took her hand “are you alright love?” He questioned, sensing her fear. “No, but I need to do this. As long as I have you I will be fine.” She sighed squeezing his hand. “You always have me love, I am right here.” 

Bastian met them at the door, the palace staff took their luggage. “Duchess Arias belongings are to be taken to my quaters and not her usual suite, she will be staying with me.” Leo ordered them, after everything that had happened he did not want her alone, he also hated sleeping with out her anymore. “You’re looking well. How are you Bastian?” Leo clasped him on the shoulder. “Just fine, Duchess Aria how are you feeling?” Bastian turned his attention to Aria. For safety purposes Leo, Aria and Liam thought it best he be in the loop about the pregnancy. Should any safety concerns arise he would know how to proceed. “Better now that I am not puking my brains out anymore.” She tries to make light of the thick tension hanging over her,Bastian chuckled. “Dinner is at 6pm, his magesty trust you will be on time?” Bastian said arching his brow. “Yes of course Bastian.” Aria spoke up. “My apologies, it was Leos tardiness I was referring to.” Aria giggled “ Don’t worry Bas, I will make sure he doesn’t get into to much trouble while we are here.” “Has anyone else arrived?” She questioned walking behind Bastian. “Not yet your grace, I will inform you when they do.” He answered.

Leo and Aria enter the dinning room. Liam was there waiting for them. His eyes lit up when he seen her, she looked radiant. A tinge of jealousy coursed through his body when he caught sight of her holding Leos hand. She is happy, thats all that matters. He told himself. “Aria you look as beautiful as ever.” Liam wrapped her into a hug. “Leo isn’t giving you to much trouble is he? You know I can have him locked away in the dungeon if he gets out of hand. ” he chuckled. “Haha brother.” Leo pulled him in for a quick hug, patting him on the back. Before they could sit Constantine and Regina joined them. Aria felt nauseous, she had not faced the former king and queen since Madeline shot her. She knew Regina hated her for the fact her niece was dead.

 They sat down as the staff served them. Everyone else was given salmon except Aria. Liam made sure the kitchen prepared her something entirely different as he was told seafood was not ideal for pregnant women, not that they could not eat it, but Leo being ever so protective insisted she have a different option. Aria did not mind, she was not a fan of seafood in the first place. “Why does Aria have chicken? Salmon is on the menu” Regina scoffed. “I had the kitchen staff prepare her a different meal, due to her dietary needs.” Liam spoke up. “What does it matter Regina.” Leo questioned. “You two are always giving into her, she has you both wrapped around your fingers.” Regina’s words hitting Aria like daggers. “Dear perhaps this isn’t the time ” Constantine whispered, trying to calm Regina. “No, this is the perfect time. She is a duchess now, although I am not sure why, a lady should always eat what is served and not expect changes be made.” 

“ENOUGH.” Leo hollered. “I will not allow you to speak to her that way Regina. She is the mother of my children and you will show her some respect.” Leo slammed his hands on the table. “Children? Leo are you saying?” Constantine stammered. “Yes Father Aria and I are expecting twins in the fall.” Leo softened his voice holding Arias hand. “Oh Jesus, you aren’t even married.” Regina scoffed. “I am going to be a Grandfather, that is wonderful news, congratulations.” Constantine smiled. “You.. you’re happy about this?” Aria spoke up. “Yes my dear, Oh I can not wait to have children running around again, when are you due dear? Constantine gushed. "November 4th.” Aria whispered completely stunned at Constantine’s Joy. “Wow, I did not know it was twins.” Liam stammered.

They finished their meal in silence. Regina abruptly leaving afterwards. Leo and Liam enjoyed a drink, Constantine pulled Aria to the side. “My dear I want to apolgise for what happened earlier. My wife, she has her ways about her, and sometimes our spouses make us do things that we do not want to do.” He paused a moment, she could tell he had more on his mind.  “I know what I did to you, well you may never be able to forgive me. But I am truly sorry I had those letters sent.” Constantine hung his head. Aria sucked a breath in “I blame Madeline, and Regina for this Constantine. You played a role, yes. But my anger is with Madeline and Regina, not you.” She let her breath out. “Is everything ok over here.” Leo wrapped his arm around Aria. “Yes son, I was just apologizing to Aria. I owe you an apology too, I was wrong to tear you away from such a wonderful woman all those years ago. I am happy you have found your way back to each other. As a father you want whats best for your children, do not make my mistakes, listen to them, let them tell you what they want.” Constantine’s eye met Leos, it seemed there was something left un said. Leo reached out and embraced his father.

 “Aria, the others have arrived.” Bastian interrupted. “Well, this old man needs to retire for the evening. I am glad we were able to talk.” Constantine kissed Aria’s cheek and he walked off.

“Could you have everyone meet us in here once they get settled please. ” Liam ordered. “I planned on having cake with everyone for Drakes birthday, but he would kill me if I announced it.” Liam chuckled. “So no cake?” Aria pouts. “We are having cake just not singing happy birthday.” Liam chuckled. “You shouldn’t have told me it was Drakes birthday Liam.” Aria chuckles. Liam smiled, he knew she would want to make the best of it, Drake could tell Liam no, but not Aria.

A few minutes later their friends entered the dining room. “So what’s for desert Liam, I am starving ” Maxwell plopped himself into chair grabbing a fork and knife. “Oh we are having, cake…. birthday cake!” Aria giggled looking over at Drake. Maxwell put some music on, as the group drank and laughed. Have another Rhys, Drake elbowed Leo wanting him to have another Whiskey. “No Drake I better not, I don’t want to get to drunk. ” Leo shook his head. “Hey you, have fun, let lose. We are celebrating Drakes birthday, and If I cant join in, somebody’s got to drink a few for me.” Aria placed a hand on her stomach. She leaned, her lips brushed against his. “I love you, do I tell you this enough?” Leo chuckled returning her kiss. “I could stand to hear it more.” She teased.

Some time later after the group drank a couple bottles of whiskey Ellie had enough of Maxwell’s music selection. She walked over to where his phone was plugged in, and plugged hers in. She randomized her spotify music. “Ahhh shit Aria its out jam.” Aria laughs as the two of them break into the first verse of the catchy 90s tune.

Aria said her goodbyes and walked over to where the guys were sitting. “There’s my baby, and my babies.” Leo placed his hands on her stomach he leaned in placing a sweet kiss to her small bump. “Daddy loves you two sooo much.” He pats his lap for Aria to sit on it. He wraps his arms around her “I’m going to be a dad guys. Can you believe it?” Leo slurred “hell no I cant, never in a million years Rhys.” Drake bellowed. “Ooookay Daddy lets get you to bed.” Aria stood up reaching for his hands. “Take me to bed future Mrs Rhys.” Aria chuckled “future Mrs Rhys huh?”  Leo flashed her a wide smile.“Look at Leo, already whipped.” Drake teased. “Hey! the the wifey says jump, you say how high Walker. You’ll learn one day.” He chuckled stumbling backwards. “Goodnight gentlemen.” Aria waved as she ushered Leo out of the ball room. 

Once they reached their room Aria helped Leo out of his shoes and clothes. “If I didn’t know any better I would think you were trying to seduce me love.” Leo hiccuped. “As much as I  would love to, I think you have had a bit much to drink for that.” She chuckled helping him onto the bed. He grabbed her wrist “While I may have had ALOT to drink I am serious about one thing.” Aria raised her brow “I want you to be my wife love, I want you to have my last name and be bound together for the rest of our lives.” He looked at her through bloodshot droopy eyes. The man was three sheets to the wind, but even then she could see the sincerity in his eyes. She kissed his forehead “and I would like nothing more then that. But for tonight, lets focus on getting some sleep. We have a busy day ahead of us.” Aria changed into one of Leos t-shirts and climbed in bed next to him.

Leo wrapped his arms around her, one arm around her chest, and the other on her belly. Aria smiled, Mrs Rhys, she thought to herself, she yawned I like the sound of that. She closed her eyes as the exhaustion of the day washed over her, putting her to sleep.

Healing the Marriage Crisis (Pt 1)

This topic is one that we chose to address because it’s something that a lot of people have questions about and a lot of people are undertaking the process of getting to know someone for marriage without a lot of guidance, without a lot of support. Within our community, we have a strong tradition of taking advice and taking support from those who serve as Imam, as teachers, as Shuyukh and this is perhaps one area where that is really not happening as it should, as it could.

So, a lot of the time, for example, in my work as a chaplain, or as an advisor, I get people coming to me in the middle of a process, or at the end of the process, where they’ve been trying to get to know someone and they’re already in the state of crisis by the time they reach out to me. So, the situation has either become a situation of stalemate where they have no idea what’s going on- they had every intention to get to know this person for an actual outcome like marriage and now they’re in a state of just talking to this person almost every day without knowing where is this going to go – is this ever going to result in a proposal? Is this ever going to become something they can they show to their parents? Or is this kind of relationship always going to remain taking place via Whatsapp and text messages and there’s no wedding in sight. That’s one kind of crisis that people came up to me with.

Another kind is ‘Ghosting’, which is, I guess, a new term, a new phenomenon to some degree that’s made possible through Whatsapp and this other modern means of communication. I’m saying modern because it’s modern for me- at the time when I was getting married, those were not really there. In that sense, it’s something recent and I know I’m dating myself by saying that but that’s good. It’s always good be older these days. So, Ghosting is where there have been a few messages to get to know each other back and forth and all of a sudden, the other party disappears completely – does not answer any messages, has left no trace of where they are and so this is called Ghosting because they disappear like a ghost into thin air. Of course, this leaves the other person in a state of shock, in a state of discomfort, in a state of feeling let down by that process.

And the third type of crisis, is of course, the heartbreak. The heartbreak that occurs after someone has taken a lot of time to get to know another person has invested, has become vulnerable which you have to do to some degree when you tried to get to know someone who shared parts of who they are and what they hope for in a life shared, and then the other person lets them down sometimes for no good reason, sometimes because the other person is simply afraid of committing, which also adds to the sense of heartbreak because it’s not even clear really what went wrong. So, these are some things that people are experiencing and perhaps you know someone who’s gone through that or perhaps you, yourself have gone through one of these situations.

I’ll add one more, because it’s very pertinent. In fact, just today, somebody was writing to me, just before I left home to come here and that is the situation where two people who are likeminded, who are both religious, who seek to have a religious life together, have met usually from a religious setting, like a masjid or working on a dawah project together, they come from different worlds, socially speaking, culturally speaking, they’re not from the same ethic background and yet they have good potential to become wonderful spouses to one another and they’ve not done anything wrong in getting to know each other. And at least one set of parent steps in and said, “This is absolutely not happening.” Because the other person is not from the same village where they are from and we need to maintain our bloodline essentially and not let it get it sullied by another ethnicity. Of course, they don’t put it in that language but that’s what it is.

So, these are the things that are going on for young people who are simply trying to do something halal and they’re getting all of these obstacles placed in their way. So, it’s important to speak together as a community. Amongst here are scholars, parents, elders, all of us, we play a role in allowing and enabling and empowering other people to get married. This should not be an individual pursuit, it’s a community responsibility to look after people and to help them to get married. In fact, in traditional Muslim societies, there’s money set aside for that, there’s a kind of sadaqah you give just to enable people to get married- to let a girl have a nice dress to wear for that occasion, to have some food to serve her guests. We have a bigger problem now than just economic problem and so we have to adjust and we have to start give sadaqah in a different way, which is to give our energy, to give our support, to give our wisdom, to help take someone by the hand and help them through this process so that they don’t end up with a broken heart.

A broken heart is a very hard thing to deal with because it’s the heart through which you connect to your Lord. And if that’s broken, then we’ve got a bigger problem on our hands than just a few tears cried in the night. So, we need to take care of this altogether and there is much guidance to be had in our religion. Our religion has left no grey area. Alhamdulillah, there’s guidance that we can seek. And so, this talk is meant to shed light on those things and how we can access resources that will allow us to go through this process in a safe way- a way that doesn’t hurt us and that doesn’t hurt other people.

I would like to pass the mic to Shaykh Walead because I think that one of the most important things when we’re looking at any process is to think about the relationship between the means and the end. And the end, being the maqsad and we know in Islam, that the end does not justify the means. Just because you have a good intention about where you’d like to end in a particular process doesn’t mean that you can take whatever means necessary. So, sometimes we end up taking whatever means necessary because we don’t have guidance not because we deliberately wish to go outside the boundaries. I think that’s what I see with mostly with people- it’s not that they deliberately trying to take whatever means necessary but they feel sort of that they’re in a void, they haven’t been shown how to do this in a healthy way. So perhaps in terms of how we can determine what is a healthy way to get to know someone for marriage – ask them questions like, should I make an online profile on a marriage website; if I see someone on Facebook who I like, should I private message them; should I go through a friend? Should I go through the imam? Should I ask my parents to talk to his parents? Should I just go up to him and ask him to go for a coffee with me? How do I know what to do?

I think that if we look at what the whole intention and purpose of marriage is - this will shed light on how we can actually take the steps and what steps are purposeful towards that outcome.

I hear this question a lot:

How am I supposed to compete?  It'll be something like I've been podcasting for three years. There are these other podcasters who I'm pretty sure are buying their audience. They're spouting their numbers, and they're gigantic. How am I supposed to compete with somebody like that?

I totally understand that question. Here are some things to consider:

You Can't Compete

Because its a good visual. How would a seventeen-year-old boxer compete against the champion who has held the title for six years? You don't put that kid in the ring. He's going to get killed. The experience, the stamina, he just isn't ready. He is completely out of his league.

But I've Been Podcasting For Three Years

But Dave, I've been podcasting for three years. You say that in some cases, you know people who are really starting to make a difference with their podcast at three years mark. To this I say"Uh-huh," but here are some things that we need to think about. We never know what's going on behind the scenes with a podcast. You might have a job (or two) and a spouse and some kids. The other podcast may not have any of those. Can you imagine how much free time you would have to promote if you didn't have any other activities and could focus on your podcast 100% of the time?

So if you look at podcasters from the outside, there's a person with a podcast here, and another podcaster over there and you think they are the same and they are not. We have no idea what is going on behind the scenes. They might have a background in selling and your background is in teaching.

Radiolab thanked 25 people at the end of their show. I am an army of one. Can I compete? In 2015ish I was up for a Podcast Movement Podcast Award and one of the shows in my category was Reply All.  I was competing against them. I've also had my Logical Weight Loss podcast compete against Jillian Michaels. Can we compete? Yes. The minute you turn on the microphone you are competing. Some of the things these teams of 25 use you don't need (original music?). While great production is like icing on a cupcake, if its all icing (and no cupcake) that doesn't work (see serial season two).

I am a co-host on the Podcasters Roundtable with Daniel J. Lewis and Ray Ortega. Technically both of these people are my "competition" but they are not. Why? Because you can listen to me on Monday,  Daniel on Tuesday, and Ray on Wednesday. As long as you deliver value, you're safe and don't have to worry.

You Can't Buy An Audience

You can buy an opportunity for people to hear your show, but you can't pay them to listen. Your podcast needs to provide value so they will come back because they want more.

Holly Barey is beautiful. In 2004 they put her in a Catwoman suit, spent a million dollars to my $82 million (a loss of 18 million). On Rotten Tomatoes the movie has a ranking of 9 out of 100 with 197 people voting.

In 2009 Disney worked on a movie called John Carter based on a popular book. According to Wikipedia is the most expensive movie ever created. It was a super popular book. It's kind of a sci-fi fantasy thing. It had a young, hot actor from Friday Night Lights, which was a very popular TV show here in the States.  Yeah, they lost $200 million on that movie

You cannot buy an audience.

And upon the release,  it received a mixed critical reception. In other words, it wasn't any good. There are great visuals. It had a great soundtrack. It had great action sequences. But the biggest criticism was toward the characterization and this thing called the plot that movies have, and you kind of need a good plot, you need a story.

It's the content. It's delivering value. And apparently, this movie did not deliver value because it lost them $200 million.

And I remember seeing all the ads for this movie, that all the promotion.

Before You Start Spending Money to Grow Your Podcast

I see a lot of people who say, "I'm not getting enough downloads and they turned to Facebook ads or advertising an overcast or Spotify or Castro (all podcast listening apps). They are trying to get the word out about their show. You can buy eyeballs/earholes but you can't buy an audience because an audience is someone who comes back for more.

Do What Your Big Networks Can't

Answer every email (in my travels big shows don't do this)

Get your audience on the phone. In the book Superfans (and in the Colin Morgan Interview on Podcast Juinkes) Pat Flynn and Colin Morgan talk about reaching out to random members of their audience via the phone (you can get a free Google Voice number, or Podcast Voicemail to mask your real phone number). How do you provide great content? You know who your audience is. How do you know what they want? You talk to them.

You are a Jetski, they are a cruise ship. You can change your content in record time. They can't. You are much more flexible. They are not. You need to identify your weaknesses and your strengths. You also need to identify your "competition's" strengths and weaknesses and don't try to cover the same area whey they will unquestionably squash you.

Go to where they are. In some cases, if a show is so big they can't go out in public. You can, and while you're there you can get feedback on how to make your show better.

Be sure to poll your audience. This can be as simple as "what do you like about the show, what do you wish I would do differently?" If you want to ask, "How did you learn about the podcast" so you can do more of that.

The New Academy of Podcasting

Let's start off with the positive. Wondery, a company with 82 employees and revenues (according to growjo.com) of around 15 million per year organized a new "Academy of Podcasters" and will launch a Golden Mic awards in 2021. Per their website, "The Academy is professionally run by an Executive Director and an Account Manager.  These roles are overseen by a volunteer Board of Governors who set the strategic vision and goals of the organization. 17 Founding Members will establish the organization and guide its initial creation with a goal of 1) moving The Golden Mics into a key recognition position and 2) encouraging growth and networking of the Academy and the industry. Members are individuals in the podcast industry who are part of one of the Academy’s Peer Groups; each Peer Group will vote on its respective categories for The Golden Mics." 

So it's great that big companies with big budgets are going to be promoting podcasting. This is a good thing.

Someone Needs to Learn How to Google

The companies listed above need to learn how to do some Google searches. When you come in with a "We've arrived" mentality, you can easily offend those who have already been here working in the trenches. I mean who do you think you are the pilgrims?

The larger media companies keep saying things that seem to just ignore history. For example, an article that came out THIS WEEK stated that " Born in the halls of public radio, podcasting has emerged as one of the fastest-growing businesses in media over the past few years." Podcasting was NOT born in the halls of public radio. It was born in a hotel room where Dave Winer and Adam Curry met. In the past, I've just let them roll off m back, but I remember someone from one of these companies who stated there weren't any women podcasters in the early years (completely erasing people like Mignon Fogerty and Murr Raferty. Who can forget Steve Jobs referring to podcasting as "Amateur Hour."

So when I approached Hernan Lopez the founder and CEO of Wondery that there HAS BEEN a  “completely peer-based, not for profit, fully representative" awards show and I had won such an award he apologized.

I'm Not Saying Get Off My Lawn

Lopez was at an educational conference stating a lack of education. I'm not saying get off my lawn. I'm saying Marc Maron didn't invent podcasting (nor did Serial) and if you want me to greet you with open arms, it would be much easier if you would stop kicking me in the balls.

To the best of my knowledge, the Adamy of podcasters which controls the Hall of Fame is still in existence. It hasn't had a ceremony since 2018 due to a lack of sponsorship. This is sad. While some may feel this is just a bunch of friends slapping each other on the back, if you do some research that it's not just old white guys but women and people of color (granted the majority of the recipients is middle-aged white guys because when podcasting first started THOSE WERE THE PEOPLE WHO WERE PODCASTING.

So I look forward to seeing the spotlight the new academy will point at podcasting, and just ask them to quite saying things that make use feel invisible or worse, erase the past.
