It was the anniversary of Matilda’s mothers death today, a whole five years now, she missed her mother. Her father was wonderful, but he was always busy with work and overprotective when he wasn’t. She didn’t talk to him anymore, not after what had happened two years ago, after meeting Colt.
Normally Matilda would spend this day remembering and celebrating her mother’s life with her father, but she didn't have him anymore.
She could talk to Colt about it, he understood what it felt like to lose a parent, but she didn't. Matilda on this day just acted as if everything was fine.
Colt had gone out leaving Matilda alone trying to straighten her thoughts. After some time Matilda grew tired of the deafening silence in the apartment and wallowing in her own thoughts, then went to talk to somebody who would understand.
Matilda wandered through the cemetery, hands in her coat and wind billowing gently through her hair. It sounded strange but she liked walking there, she always felt as if her mother was always there too.
She took a seat on the bench in front of her mother’s grave. “Hi mom,” she smiled, a few minutes of relaxed silence passed. “I haven't been here for a while,” she started, “I’m sorry about that. I’ve been busy mom, I just moved in with my boyfriend, Colt, into a new apartment. Dad doesn't like him...I think you would though, he makes me happy, so happy,” Matilda explained, the smile never fading as she spoke about her boyfriend. She swallowed hard, looked from the tombstone, then back to it, sighing . “I’m not talking to dad, I haven't seen him for a long time, two years...I made some mistakes, mom, I did some bad things and I lost him because of it. I miss you both so, so much. I wish you were here, mom, you’d know how to fix this.”
“She would,” the voice she hadn't heard for two years said behind her. Matilda turned in a hurry, looking up at her dad, he’d gotten older, his hair more grey than it was a couple years ago.
“Dad...W-what are you...?” He said down next to her, a few moments of silence passing between them, neither sure what to say.
They both sat staring and the tombstone, “How are you?” the detective asked.
“I’m good...what about you?”
“I’m fine...Are you and..?”
“We’re still together,” Matilda interrupted, another moment of silence passed between the family members.
“I’ve missed you.”
“Me too,” Matilda sighed, turning to look at her father, “What are you doing here?”
“It was the strangest thing I was walking by and thought I saw your mother walking in here...”
“You are getting old,” Matilda teased, causing her father to chuckle. “I’ve missed that,” she said honestly, “missed hearing you laugh and seeing you smile...I miss you dad. Whoever would’ve thought a boy could cause all this trouble, eh?
“If she were still here-”
“But she isn't,” she interrupted her father, “it’s funny, even when she’s dead she has the ability to bring us back together. I told her that we hadn't been speaking, you see her and for the first time in forever, we’re talking.”
“I’ve never been one to believe in the supernatural,” the detective made clear.
“We’ll just call it one hell of a coincidence then.” Matilda turned back to the tombstone. “Thanks mom,” she whispered.
