Marlene Dietrich (Shanghai Express, Witness for the Prosecution, Morocco)—Bisexual icon, super hot when dressed both masculine and feminine, lived up her life in the queer Berlin scene of the 1920s, central to the 'sewing circle' of the secret sapphic actresses of Old Hollywood, refused lucrative offers by the Nazis and helped Jews and others under persecution to escape Nazi Germany, the love of my life
Sophia Loren (Marriage Italian Style, Houseboat)—Major Italian star, first actress to win an Oscar for a performance not in English (for Two Women (1960)) and later when Roberto Benigni won an Oscar in 1999 he jumped over the chairs towards the stage going "Sophia Sophia!!" because he was running towards Sophia Loren and said he cared more about her than the Oscar, that's the effect she had on people. She was big in the 60s already even though she gained a lot more notoriety after that. And I mean. Can we take a moment and just.
This is round 6 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.
[additional propaganda submitted under the cut.]
Sophia Loren:
She has maxed out all her stats: beauty, elegance, sensuality, she's got it all. her mesmerizing eyes, her sensual mouth, her sharp face shape, her everything is so striking and unlike any other beauty in films. she was also voted the world most beautiful woman when she was freaking 65
im submitting her in honor of my dad bc she was the first celebrity crush of his he ever admitted to me and my sister :) and he was right. shes so pretty
OSCAR WINNER. Worked with some of the hottest leading men in Hollywood but remained faithful to her husband whom she had a loving marriage with till he died (even though Cary Grant almost tempted her once, it's complicated)
One of the most well-known sex symbols of the Golden Age of Hollywood, and unlike some unfortunate others, she seems to have been pretty well at peace with occupying that status. She made assertiveness and a tempestuous temper seem glamorous, and although she's famous for side-eying Jayne Manisfield's cleavage, honestly? She's one to talk.
Absolutely, drop-dead sexy, also a hard working, extraordinarily talented actress who didn't shy away from the less glamorous roles to gift us some gritty, memorable performances
Submitting this on behalf of my dad, who knows nothing of tumblr or this blog, but I remember being a kid watching Houseboat while my mom thirsted after Cary Grant, dad thirsted after Sophia Loren, and I was excited that they lived on a boat. Anyway, she's extremely beautiful and was an international star, doing a ton of movies in Italy before being recognized in the US.
JUST LOOK AT HER Y'ALL
Very smart and beautiful, the characters that she played (I mean those in the movies that I put in the previous question) are as strong and determined as her which I think adds to her hotness.
Global superstar and my late grandfather's long time movie star crush and for a man as quiet as he was, and as hopelessly devoted to his wife as he was, the fact that I know that means she was EXCEPTIONAL.
Big in the chest, snatched in the waist, pretty in the face 😳
Sexy, beautiful, deep. A real star.
Her performance in "Man of La Mancha" is just so very captivating. Dubbed as "the Italian Marilyn Monroe", she looks beautiful in any movie and at any age.
Forget the exotic sexpot of her Hollywood films and go back to her Italian career: sparking with Marcello Mastroianni as the woman who drives him mad and outwits all his fumbling attempts at macho posturing in their early films, and showing a tender side in their 1970s films. Sophia isn’t self-conscious about who she is or her beautiful body: she enjoys being herself and she wants us all to enjoy ourselves too.
She starred in films as a sexually emancipated persona and was one of the best known sex symbols of the time. She is a great cook and her filmography is immense.
On the misattributed quote that Sophia owed everything to spaghetti: 'Did you actually say the quote frequently attributed to you, "Everything you see I owe to spaghetti"?' "Non è vero! It's not true! It's such a silly thing. I owe it to spaghetti, no, no. Completely made up."
Marlene Dietrich:
ms dietrich....ms dietrich pls.....sit on my face
its marlene dietrich!!!! queer legend, easily the hottest person to ever wear a tuxedo, that hot hot voice, those glamorous glamorous movies…. most famously she starred in a string of movies directed by josef von sternberg throughout the 1930s, beginning with the blue angel which catapulted her to stardom in the role of the cabaret singer lola lola. known for his exquisite eye for lighting, texture, imagery, von sternberg devoted himself over the course of their collaborations to acquiring exceptional skill at photographing dietrich herself in particular, a worthy direction in which to expend effort im sure we can all agree. she collaborated with many other great directors of the era as well, including rouben mamoulian (song of songs), frank borzage (desire), ernst lubitsch (angel), fritz lang (rancho notorious), and billy wilder (witness for the prosecution). the encyclopedia britannica entry im looking at while compiling this propaganda describes her as having an “aura of sophistication and languid sexuality” which✔️💯. born marie magdalene dietrich, she combined her first and middle names to coin the moniker “marlene”. she was a trendsetter in her incorporation of trousers, suits, and menswear into her wardrobe and her androgynous allure was often remarked upon. critic kenneth tynan wrote, “She has sex, but no particular gender. She has the bearing of a man; the characters she plays love power and wear trousers. Her masculinity appeals to women and her sexuality to men.” in the 1920s she enjoyed the vibrant queer nightlife of weimar berlin, visiting gay bars and drag balls, and in hollywood her love affairs with men and women were an open secret. she was an ardent opponent of nazi germany, refusing lucrative contacts offered her to make films there, raising money with billy wilder to help jews and dissidents escape, and undertaking extensive USO tours to entertain soldiers with an act that included her a playing musical saw and doing a mindreading routine she learned from orson welles. starting in the 50s and continuing into the mid-70s she worked largely as a cabaret artist touring the world to large audiences, employing burt bacharach as her musical arranger.
First of all, there are those publicity photos of her in a tux. Second of all, I have never been the same since knowing that she sent copies of those photos to her Berlin lovers signed "Daddy Marlene." Not only is she hot in all circumstances, but she can do everything from earthy to ice queen. Also, she kept getting sexy romantic lead parts in Hollywood after the age of 40, which would be rare even now. She hated Nazis, loved her friends, and had a sapphic social circle in Hollywood. She also had cheekbones that could cut glass and a voice that could melt you.
Her GENDER her looks her voice her everything
“In her films and record-breaking cabaret performances, Miss Dietrich artfully projected cool sophistication, self-mockery and infinite experience. Her sexuality was audacious, her wit was insolent and her manner was ageless. With a world-weary charm and a diaphanous gown showing off her celebrated legs, she was the quintessential cabaret entertainer of Weimar-era Germany.”
The bar scene in Morocco awoke something in me and ultimately changed my gender
youtube
"Her manner, the critic Kenneth Tynan wrote, was that of ‘a serpentine lasso whereby her voice casually winds itself around our most vulnerable fantasies.’ Her friend Maurice Chevalier said: ‘Dietrich is something that never existed before and may never exist again.’”
"Songstress, photographer, fashion icon, out bisexual phenom (notoriously stole Lupe Velez and Joan Crawford's men, and Errol Flynn's wife, had a torrid affair with Greta Garbo that ended in a 60-year feud, other notable conquests including Erich Maria Remarque -yes, the guy who wrote All Quiet on the Western Front- Douglas Fairbanks Junior, Claudette Colbert, Mercedes de Acosta, Edith Piaf), anti-Nazi activist. Marlene was a bitch - she had an open marriage for decades and one of her favorite things was making catty commentary about her current lover with her husband, and her relationship with her daughter was painful- but she was also immensely talented, a hard worker, an opponent of fascism and the hottest ice queen in Hollywood for a long time."
youtube
"She can sing! She can act! She told the Nazis to fuck off and became a US citizen out of spite! She worked with other German exiles to create a fund to help Jews and German dissidents escape (she donated an entire movie salary, about $450k, to the cause). She looks REALLY GOOD in a suit. If you're not convinced, please listen to her sing "Lili Marlene". Absolutely gorgeous woman with a gorgeous voice."
Gifset link
"Bisexual icon and Nazi-hater. Looks absolutely stunning in the suits she liked to wear. 'I dress for the image. Not for myself, not for the public, not for fashion, not for men'."
"would you not let her walk on you?"

HEADCANONS FOR POLYAMOROUS TAMARACK x READER x QIU ꔛ
"Unexpected stability".
step: step 3 will suit, i guess!
amount of symbols: ±3728 symbols.
enjoy!
— At this age both Tamarack and Autumn are stable and pretty happy with themselves, so...
— your relationship will be such a green flag!
— Speaking of Qiu, they took it well. It didn’t make much difference to them that you wouldn’t only be in a relationship with them. For Autumn, the main thing was you. Their eyes always look only at you, and this is unchangeable. Even if they continue to be popular, they always find time for you. You are their trully favorite neighbour now, after all.
— Speaking of Tamarack, she was a little worried. Don't think of her bad, she was incredibly happy and excited about her relationship with you! But because of Qiu, she felt a little insecure. Of course, over time she will understand that despite them, you still give her so much love that she has enough of it for days to come. And she is willing to give you the same amount of love, if not more! Just give her lots of affectionate hugs.
— At first, it was a little difficult because they didn’t want to share you with each other. But seeing that it was too painful for you to handle, they immediately decided to try to get along well. And, fortunately, they actually made it!
— Basically, they have nothing in common with each other, but they have you. You are the only reason of them interacting well again to be honest, but they don't regret it. How could they when you are so happy with this?
— Finally it's the perfect combination of calm yet direct Tamarack and chaotic and slightly cunning Qiu and you. You are their golden mean.
— If you decide to spend time with both Qiu and Tamarack (which must happen really often), It's going to be... a little chaotic.
— In most cases, you have some kind of mini overnight stay, or a trip to the forest for a couple of days in tents, or many other ideas!
— But of course, if you want to have a quiet time, they are totally fine with watching a movie with you, having a tea party, or whatever you or they would like! They care a lot about you and each other in general anyway. The shared together time will always be memorable for you all.
— Speaking of them separately, Qiu would constantly take you with them somewhere, be it a hike to the Golden Grove Park, go somewhere in the forest or stargazing. Sometimes they even allowed themselves to treat you to Diner. I guess Autumn will get a little irritated if someone is trying to interfere their quality time with you, like who they think they are to interrupt?
— They also love to doodle you in their notebook and take some notes about you to this day. If they feel bad and you are not around, they always look at them, as some kind of therapy, and it's actually gets better. Will definitely be blushing if you find out about this.
— I guess if you want to braid their hair, Qiu will most likely allow it! And you will be the only one to whom he let to do this. Btw, you can also try to invite them to dance, they'll be ecstatic about it.
— Tamarack is quite shy to the point of inability to express affection first, but don't think less of her! She always stands up for you and always goes with you when she has time, like you know, practically everywhere. She also always takes food and sometimes a first aid kit with her. Tamarack doesn't want you to feel bad in any way, and Qiu do too. Sometimes she has enough food even to have a picnic!
— I think Tamarack would be fond of herbariums! This is part of the forest at her house, isn’t it wonderful? She gives almost all the beautiful ones to you, and if you accept them, then she walks all day happy.
— At the end of the day, Tamarack and Qiu are so in love with you that they cherish every moment you are with them. And they definitely let you know about this in any way they can!
A/N: ahhh i desperately hope it's not too ooc help😭😭😭
if you have any advices for me or anything else feel free to write it!!
(BTW ENGLISH IS NOT MY FIRST LANGUAGE SO....... yeah....)

Favorite Traditional Christmas song?
Favorite Modern Christmas song?
Favorite Christmas movie(s)?
Favorite Christmas episode (any tv show)?
Favorite food to eat or serve for the Christmas meal?
Favorite Christmas beverage or dessert?
Most memorable Christmas gift you received as a child?
Best Christmas gift you ever gave to anyone?
If you have a Christmas tree, what’s your tree topper?
What’s your favorite version of Santa in a movie?
Which fictional character would you like to be caught under the mistletoe with?
Hello my dear friend 💖
It was my pleasure to decorate your Christmas tree! 🥰 I'll try to answer as many as possible so bear with me
Favorite Christmas season activity? Oh, that is definitely baking and even now I have two date cakes in the oven. 😊
Favorite Traditional Christmas song? That would be "En etsi valtaa, loistoa" which means "I Seek No Power Nor Splendour". It is basically a prayer for world peace and a wish for merry Christmas for both the rich and the poor.
Favorite Modern Christmas song? As corny as it might sound "Last Christmas" by Wham! I was a Wham! -girl in my youth. 😄
Favorite Christmas movie(s)? There are quite a few but here is few honorable mentions: It's A Wonderful Life (1946), Disney's From All of Us to All of You (1958), The Snowman based on the novel of Raymond Briggs and Santa Claus and the Magic Drum based on the children's book on the same name by Mauri Kunnas
Favorite Christmas episode (any tv show)? Usually we watch The Doctor Who's Christmas Special when it airs but nothing in particular comes to mind.
Favorite food to eat or serve for the Christmas meal? I love fish so that would be salmon, warm or cold smoked and graved salmon which is basically thinly sliced cured salmon using a mix of salt, sugar and dill. Another which I love is fish roe with smetana (a thick type of sour cream).
Favorite Christmas beverage or dessert? Beverage: alcohol free mulled wine, absolutely a must in Christmas, usually served with almond slices and raisins. Dessert: I love the traditional dessert, prune kissel. It is made with prunes and a sweet broth thickened with corn or potato starch. Usually it is served with cream, not whipped but plain cream. Of course you can use milk, any of it's substitutes or just enjoy it plain if you wish, it's all up to your taste. Another sweet I love is Yule tart/Star tart, puffy pastry with prune jam. This is the one that has risen eyebrows internationally because of its shape. It is star-shaped or a pinwheel but some people say it resembles a swastika. 🤷♀️
Most memorable Christmas gift you received as a child? Oh good god, that was sooo long ago. Sorry, no recollection of such. Age is catching up. 😂
Best Christmas gift you ever gave to anyone? My gifts are usually very practical so only their receivers could answer this one. 😊
If you have a Christmas tree, what’s your tree topper? A silver coloured star. Usually there is an angel and an elf just right under it. Christianity and Finnish ancient beliefs meeting under the same star. 🌟
What’s your favorite version of Santa in a movie? The Santa in Santa Claus and the Magic Drum. He's just so adorable trying to find the owner of the mysterious letter who is by the way very powerful Sámi shaman and causes havoc during the search.
Which fictional character would you like to be caught under the mistletoe with? Well, that would be our precious Elvenking Thranduil or the golden haired balrog slayer Glorfindel. Either will do. I hope they would be delighted to lift me a bit or otherwise their necks might get hurt. 🤭
Thank you for this wonderful ask, my friend. This was so much fun, you have no idea how many times I used Google to translate or find some type explanation. 😊

Hello, Meda! Let’s say, hypothetically, for the sake of the argument, I was considering checking out some of Pedro’s roles to start pooooossibly writing for him. What shows/movies would you recommend to a total newbie? 👁️
Eli!! Hey!! 🫶🏻☺️
I’m leaving all my recommendations under the cut since I went on for a stupidly long amount of time lmao.
I would say that it depends on what kind of media you’re in the mood to consume right now!! My good reliable recommendation is always The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. That one features one of my favorite Pedro boys, Javi Gutierrez. He’s an absolute sweetheart and even though I’m not a massive Nicolas Cage fan, him and Pedro are such an enjoyable duo. It’s one of my go-to comfort films since it’s pretty lighthearted!!
Another good goofy one is The Bubble. Here, he plays Dieter Bravo. An aging, paranoid, somewhat washed up actor who has…so many fucking issues…so many of them. The movie itself isn’t fantastic (in my opinion lmao), it takes place during the earlier days of the pandemic so a lot of the humor it employs is very reminiscent of the time. But it’s still a fun watch, if only for the sake of our favorite trash panda.
In a similar, still somewhat lighthearted vein, I’d recommend Kingsman: The Golden Circle. It’s an action film with plenty of goofs and gaffs. In this one, Pedro plays a classic cowboy, Jack Daniels, also known as “Whiskey.” He’s got the southern charm, the lasso, and ever so slight himbo vibes.
I would say that quintessential Pedro is him as Joel in The Last of Us, Javier Peña in Narcos, and Din Djarin in The Mandalorian. Those are easily some of his most memorable roles in my mind and that’s for good reason!! They’re the parts where I think he really shines as an actor. However, I would highly recommend taking a look over content warnings for both The Last of Us and Narcos since both shows deal with some possibly triggering material if you’re not familiar with either of them!!
Last but not least, my underrated pick: him as Ezra in Prospect. Prospect was one of those films I didn’t think much of at first, but it’s lowkey one of my favorites. Ezra by himself is such a fascinating character but it’s also a great example of how well he bounces off of other actors?? He and Sophie Thatcher play off of each other so well (though I may be a tiny bit biased because I also adore Sophie lol). So if you’re ever in a little bit of a sci-fi mood, I would definitely recommend diving into Prospect!!
Keep in mind, there are so many other roles he’s played. His career spans all the way back to the 90s. Aside from the more well known things he’s been in, there are more indie projects he’s been a part of and little roles that he’s taken on various shows. I very strongly believe that there’s a Pedro boy for everyone and I hope you have fun delving into the insanity!! 💛

Saw Wish (2023) recently and tbh it wasn’t as bad as ppl said it was, but it was pretty unbefitting for disney’s 100 anniversary movie. I feel like if it weren’t high stakes put on it and was just a regular disney film, it wouldve gotten average reviews. Tho i dont think it deserves to be nominated solely for the fact that a lot of better animated movies came out, i think it still had a lot of neat stuff in it (I mildly enjoyed the message and some of the songs). But even then, it still had many flaws, like the songs being all pop instead of a broadway-style and not rly memorable, as well as not developing the story more.
Another thing I would like to add is that it truly doesn’t appreciate the legacy it’s trying to showcase here. it only encapsulates what the company is to a marketable and modern audience, so it only includes relevant and recent disney pop culture references rather than include stuff from one of the older movies. it shows us what disney, the corporation, is; not disney, the animation studio, is.
I’m just gonna blurt out a list of things what I personally think would make the movie better since it had a lot of potential but wasn’t directed well. again this is my opinion so no need to get all defensive or aggressive:
• first of all, the music. they shouldve gotten either a.) a new and upstart musician from broadway since Ashman himself stated that most of the disney melodies we now know are pretty much a broadway musical but animated or b.) gather a band of all the musicians that wrote for disney and each of them contribute a song. Like in the beginning the songs could sound like golden age of disney songs and then it progresses until we get to the end where we get the modern taste of it.
• wouldve also been nice for the animation to also progress with the music. from 2d to 3d as the film goes on but that could translate poorly so I suggest just making it 2d since it’s the best way to incorporate the storybook style.
• next, the villains. i rly agree with the concept of a villain couple, not just because it would be really fun but also could comprise of characteristics from both past male and female villains of disney.
• random idea but these villains should have like henchmen/apprentices. I know asha’s there to be the apprentice but I think I wanna shift the plot a bit here. now all these apprentices reference a disney villain and agree with magnifico’s philosophy about wishes. at the end of the movie, when the big baddies are defeated, they hide and go out into the world where they become the true baddies we know them to be. Preventing dreamers from achieving their dreams.
• Asha as a character should have traits that resembles the majority of the disney princesses, not just the recent quirky trope. Should be somewhat naive but a dreamer and still kind but also misunderstood. idk just like a character that symbolizes the typical disney heroine. They also shouldve given her clothes that resemble more of a fairy godmother (specifically the one she wore during the climax) rather than her rapunzel-esque outfit to distinguish her more
• they shouldve made star have human-like qualities and included the romance with the star. i like how disney’s going with the no-romance thing but romance was a big part of the disney franchise for a long time, and it wouldve been nice to see that again, but with more modern romance tropes (e.g. black cat gf/golden retriever bf, etc) to appeal to modern audiences, so younger kids could understand what made the early films so dreamy and charming.
• flesh out the citizens!!! if the seven friends are the seven dwarves, add more to them. i was especially sad with grumpy since he was more annoying than grumpy. Justify his personality, as well as the others. give us a reason why the citizens need their wish back instead of just showing one character that without their wish, they are just boring. Show the entire population just being outright miserable and blank without their wishes.
• another thing to add to the point above is to establish the people of rosas’ dreams. Because we see in one scene with magnifico that each person dreams of becoming something magical (e.g. one person dreaming of being peter pan and another wanting to become mary poppins). wouldnt it be nice to establish that the people of rosas ARE the disney characters we love and know, which makes them getting back their wishes so important. without it, they wouldn’t be the childhood favorites we know and love today.
• it wouldve been really swell for the grandpa to be a walt disney adjacent character that dreams of learning how to draw. yes he’s a controversial figure nowadays but if ur gonna make a disney 100 celebration, at least make it a point to include the guy u named the company after.
• it also wouldve been really swell if the sidekick character wasn’t a goat but a mouse that resembles mickey in a way, plus a whole gang of other side characters that references mickey’s gang (a female mouse, two ducks, two dogs, etc). they are the official mascots of the company so it’d be really weird to not include or reference them.
• this is going into fanfiction territory but i want the ending scene to be about how the people of rosas finally achieving their wishes and setting forth out into the world to inspire others to follow their wishes (including the evil apprentices in the hopes of destroying those dreams). in the end, when nothing is left, asha just looks out into the distant and transforms into the fairy godmother and then the rosas castle kinda becomes the disney castle we see in the intro. ik this sounds bad on paper and it probably is but by adding stuff i think we could make it better.
I know all of this is bordering fanfiction but like it wouldve been nice for the disney creatives to just go all in. And as a viewer, i did see the potential this movie had, but it just wasn’t done right. And it rly did make me sad to see a good premise go to waste because the message of the movie is what captures that disney magic: the ability to make a wish and seeing that wish come true.
tl;dr: Wish, although one of the less better animated movies this year, really had the potential to be great but wasn’t done right due to pressure of it being the disney 100 celebration. Instead of showcasing the passion and heart that the Walt Disney animation studios did for 100 years, it only displayed the heartlessness of the corporation it has grown to be. And I for one, though I attempted to fix it, am still saddened to see that what was once (and should be) a celebration of creativity and passion got turned into a moneymaker that billionaires see only as products, not as art.
#my posts#didnt explain a lot of it well#but u get the point#wish 2023#wish#disney#walt disney studios#disney 100#sorry if my grammar is bad i promise i could write better#but im sitting in the coldest room known to man so my fingers are ridged and not rly wanting to type now#plus that misconstrued concept wherein your brain thought u wrote that word down but u didn’t#I honestly appreciate what other ppl say abt this movie and would like to see what yall guys think would make it better if u didn’t like it

IN MEMORIAM
David Lynch, Visionary Filmmaker Behind Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks, Dies at 78
“There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us,” his family shared in a statement. “But, as he would say, ‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.’”

David Lynch, the mind-bending filmmaker behind Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks, and Mulholland Drive, who merged weirdness and surrealism with the mundanity of the everyday, has died at age 78. The news was shared by his family on Thursday, January 16, via his official Facebook page. No official cause of death was provided.
“It is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and the artist, David Lynch,” the statement reads. “We would appreciate some privacy at this time. There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us. But, as he would say, ‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.’ It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way.”
Last August, Lynch refuted rumors that he would be retiring from the film industry due to struggles with emphysema, a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease that limits the body’s ability to take in oxygen from the air. “Ladies and Gentlemen, Yes, I have emphysema from my many years of smoking,” Lynch wrote on X. “I have to say that I enjoyed smoking very much, and I do love tobacco—the smell of it, lighting cigarettes on fire, smoking them—but there is a price to pay for this enjoyment, and the price for me is emphysema.” The director said that he had quit smoking for more than two years and was “in excellent shape except for emphysema.”
Lynch also reiterated: “I am filled with happiness, and I will never retire.”
Upon word of his passing, he was praised by Steven Spielberg, who cast him in a memorable supporting role in his 2023 semi-autobiographical drama as the legendary Western filmmaker John Ford. “Here was one of my heroes—David Lynch playing one of my heroes. It was surreal and seemed like a scene out of one of David’s own movies,” Spielberg said in a statement Thursday. “The world is going to miss such an original and unique voice. His films have already stood the test of time and they always will.”
Lynch’s last known major project was a series tentatively titled Unrecorded Night. It was apparently set to shoot at Netflix, but it was among the projects canceled by the streamer during the pandemic. Sabrina Sutherland, who worked alongside him as a producer, said earlier last year that she held out hope it might still be made, but added that Lynch “has been enjoying his artwork and music endeavors, so we haven’t gone back to it.” He also remained busy with the YouTube channel David Lynch Theatre, an experimental project in which he and collaborators supplied new and absurd dialogue for vintage film clips that had fallen into the public domain.
Before that, Lynch also used the channel to post two other peculiar fixtures: his daily weather report, in which he described atmospheric conditions while wearing the exact same dark glasses and black shirt each time, and something he called Today’s Number Is, which featured him extracting one of 10 numbered balls from a jug. The purpose of the numbers? None can say. That’s just the effect Lynch wanted.
Perplexity was his favorite medium. The filmmaker dedicated most of his work to creating feelings of wonder or dread rather than making literal sense, although he was capable of surprising audiences with a linear narrative now and then—as with the 1999 drama The Straight Story. In that earnestly heartwarming drama, Richard Farnsworth played an elderly man who can no longer drive a car, so instead he pilots his riding lawn mower across two states to make amends with an ailing brother.
Far more often, Lynch leaned into the eerie and unsettling. His breakthrough was 1977’s Eraserhead, starring Jack Nance as a man whose shock of hair stands up like the rubber back end of a pencil as he confronts a series of nightmarish images and scenarios—including having his severed head sent to a factory so it can be used to erase the mistakes of actual pencils. Lynch had initially studied fine art and painting before becoming transfixed by film in the early ’70s, and Eraserhead was a student project that he began crafting while studying at the American Film Institute in Los Angeles. He was heavily influenced by the surrealist writing of Franz Kafka, and sought to create equally unsettling images and stories onscreen.
That student film became an underground sensation, playing for years as a midnight movie and vaulting the young filmmaker into the mainstream.
Comedian Mel Brooks recruited Lynch to direct the 1980 film version of The Elephant Man, based on the life of 19th-century artist Joseph (John) Merrick, who struggled with a medical condition that made him an intriguing presence in carnival sideshows but an outcast from regular society. Lynch later recalled meeting with Brooks, who was producing the drama despite being primarily known for crowd-pleasing comedies like The Producers, Blazing Saddles, and Young Frankenstein. “Mel Brooks took a chance on me,” he said. “All I had done was Eraserhead. Unbelievable that Mel Brooks loved Eraserhead! He backed me in ways you can’t imagine. People wanted to change this, do that, and gave me all kinds of hell. Never would Mel let that happen. He protected me all the way.”
The Elephant Man was also a sensation. It received eight Academy Award nominations, including best picture and best director. “It won zero,” Lynch noted, making his thumb and forefinger into a circle. “But it didn’t matter. It put me on the map.”
Lynch was lionized by audiences who loved his outsider storytelling. His fellow filmmakers were enamored with his audaciousness as well. George Lucas even considered hiring him as the director for Return of the Jedi. “I was asked by George to come up to see him and talk to him about directing the third Star Wars. I had next-door to zero interest,” Lynch later recalled. “But I always admired George. [He] is a guy that does what he loves. And I do what I love. The difference is that what George loves makes hundreds of billions of dollars.”
Instead, Lynch made another space epic, one that influenced Lucas’s generation—a big-screen version of Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel Dune.
Dune was not a successful picture when it debuted in 1984. The grim space saga underwhelmed at the box office and seemed to irritate critics, who described it as an intriguing mess. But it was the director’s first collaboration with Kyle MacLachlan, who made his film debut in the role of Paul Atreides and would go on to collaborate with Lynch many times over the years, including on 1986’s Blue Velvet and the groundbreaking, surreal network TV series Twin Peaks. The actor bore a striking resemblance to the clean-cut appearance of Lynch himself, and many critics have seen his various performances as an avatar for the filmmaker. “I think he saw my face and thought: ‘I want to throw him into weird situations,’” MacLachlan said in 1993. “He thinks like an artist, and I think he saw me as someone he wanted to paint with.”
The actor posted a stirring tribute to Lynch on Thursday, after news of his death broke. “David was in tune with the universe and his own imagination on a level that seemed to be the best version of human. He was not interested in answers because he understood that questions are the drive that make us who we are. They are our breath,” MacLachlan wrote on Instagram. “While the world has lost a remarkable artist, I’ve lost a dear friend who imagined a future for me and allowed me to travel in worlds I could never have conceived on my own.”
Born on January 20, 1946, in Missoula, Montana, Lynch never lost his flat Midwestern charm—even as he indulged in all manner of cinematic strangeness. Blue Velvet merged his observations of mainstream American life with menacing surrealism and the brutality he saw lying in wait beneath placid, everyday settings. The 1986 film was a kind of bizarre film noir, starring MacLachlan as a naive college student who plays detective and tries to trace the origin of a severed human ear he has found. This puts him on an odyssey involving a cabaret singer (played by Isabella Rossellini) and a psychotically abusive drug fiend (a gas-huffing Dennis Hopper) who has intimidated her into doing his bidding.
Rossellini, who starred in multiple Lynch projects and later devoted a room to the director on her Long Island farm, still remembers being cast in Blue Velvet.“He called me one day and said, ‘Isabella, you want to make a film about lesbians? You like this kind of thing,’” she recalled with laughter to Vanity Fairlast October. “David didn’t expect this film to be very successful. I don’t even know that he liked it particularly.”
The New York Times hailed it as an instant cult classic. “Other directors labor long and hard to achieve the fevered perversity that comes so naturally to David Lynch,” wrote critic Janet Maslin. “Kinkiness is its salient quality, but Blue Velvet has deadpan humor too, as well as a straight-arrow side that makes its eccentricity all the crazier. There’s no mistaking the exhilarating fact that it’s one of a kind.”
Many tried to imitate Lynch’s oddball perspective, but few came any close to matching it. To describe something as “Lynchian” is almost a cliché today, marking a work that defies easy understanding and upends perspectives on so-called normalcy.
In 1990, Lynch brought his reality-warping point of view to the most mainstream of mediums: network television. ABC provided a home for his landmark drama Twin Peaks, which starred MacLachlan as an FBI agent who investigates the death of a young girl named Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee) in a small Pacific Northwest town. “Who killed Laura Palmer?” became a nationwide catchphrase as viewers tried to sift clues from the dreamlike narrative Lynch presented.
The show only lasted two seasons but became an enduring cult phenomenon, spawning the 1992 feature film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. It returned in 2017 for a third season that aired on Showtime, with MacLachlan reprising the role of Agent Dale Cooper, still struggling to escape that woodland, transdimensional town.
Lynch remained active on the big screen even after experimenting with TV. Among his bigger hits was the 2001 drama Mulholland Drive, starring Naomi Watts and Laura Harring as two women with dual identities in the highlands of Los Angeles. It’s another of Lynch’s projects that defies simple narrative description, blending scenes of sun-baked Southern California with inexplicable dreamlike surrealism. You have to see it to get it. And even then, aspects of it may remain a puzzle that your mind turns over and over for years to come.
Watts said she learned to trust Lynch’s vision. She told VF in August: “I was coming down that escalator in Mulholland Drive and riding around Los Angeles, and he was like, ‘More, Naomi, more.’ I did more, then, ‘More, Naomi, more!’ I felt like this was going to be the worst thing ever to hit the screen. How could an adult person be that excited? It just didn’t feel right. And, of course, he knew what he was doing, and I had to just trust his vision and throw myself into it.”
Blue Velvet may have been a high-water mark for Lynch, and it established another longtime working relationship. This one was with Laura Dern, who played Maclachlan’s sunny young girlfriend Sandy—a contrast to Rossellini’s sultry and dangerous femme fatale chanteuse. Dern appeared in several other Lynch films in the years that followed, including the 1990 twisted romance Wild at Heart, opposite Nicolas Cage, and 2006’s Inland Empire, a reality-fractured thriller in which she plays a Hollywood starlet whose identity begins to blend with her latest character.
Dern was also instrumental in getting Lynch to make one of his most memorable—and final—onscreen appearances.
At a crucial juncture, she stepped in to help Spielberg, who had worked with her on Jurassic Park, recruit Lynch to play John Ford in the final scene of The Fabelmans, a moment based on Spielberg’s real-life childhood encounter with the filmmaking icon. Lynch was initially resistant, but Dern tirelessly advocated for him to change his mind. “When they described the opportunity to me of David and Steven collaborating to pay homage to John Ford in this way, it was like, I just wanted all of us who love movies to have this,” she told Vanity Fair in 2023.
With her vouch, Lynch agreed—but he had a few conditions. One was that he wanted to have his costume two weeks in advance so he could get used to wearing it. “He shows up on the set, and it’s filthy. It’s filthy and it’s wrinkled!” Spielberg recalled of their shooting days. “And you can really see the wrinkles where he was sitting on chairs. He really wore it nonstop for two weeks.”
His other demand: Cheetos in his dressing room. “We were like, ‘Absolutely! He can have as many Cheetos as he wants!’” Fabelmans producer Kristie Macosko Krieger said.
“At the end of the day, when he left, there was still a lot left in the bag,” added Fabelmans screenwriter Tony Kushner. “And he very politely said, ‘Can I take these home with me?’”
“Only David would ask if he could take the rest of the bag—only him—because there’s no presumption about David,” Dern said at the time. “It’s all humility. And he makes art purely to make art, because he has to, because he needs to.”

Extremely well-illustrated with 200 film stills, this delightful book sheds much light on some of Hollywood's best known and loved repertoire, explaining how the film industry made certain songs memorable, and highlighting important moments of film history along the way. The book focuses on how the songs were presented in the movies, from early talkies where actors portrayed singers "performing" the songs, to the Golden Age in which characters burst into expressive, integral song--not as a "performance" but as a spontaneous outpouring of feeling. The book looks at song presentation in 1930s classics with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers and in 1940s gems with Judy Garland and Gene Kelly. LAST POLL OF ROUND 5
Propaganda
Sophia Loren (Marriage Italian Style, Houseboat)—Major Italian star, first actress to win an Oscar for a performance not in English (for Two Women (1960)) and later when Roberto Benigni won an Oscar in 1999 he jumped over the chairs towards the stage going "Sophia Sophia!!" because he was running towards Sophia Loren and said he cared more about her than the Oscar, that's the effect she had on people. She was big in the 60s already even though she gained a lot more notoriety after that. And I mean. Can we take a moment and just.
Mbissine Thérèse Diop (Black Girl)—She’s a Senegalese actress known for starring in Black Girl, one of the first African films to receive international attention/acclaim. So much of the movie relies on her ability to convey her character’s sense of isolation/loneliness, she’s so amazing, I really wish she had acted more. However, she just recently appeared in the film Cuties!
This is round 5 of the tournament.

End of year meme! Check out last year's version here!
1. Song of the year?
Måneskin - Honey! (Are U Coming?), although Fifteen's theme from Doctor Who has grasped me over the last few days. More music-specific stuff here!
2. Album of the year?
Strictly speaking the only full album I heard was Måneskin - Rush, and that had… some issues even though I love most of it, haha.
3. Favourite musical artist / group you started listening to this year?
Can we count the BG3 soundtrack as a new artist?
4. Movie of the year?
I rewatched Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory last night and that was... it, so that, I guess!
5. TV show of the year?
I still haven't recovered from Good Omens season 2.
6. Episode of TV or webisode that defined the year for you?
Episode 2.06 of Good Omens, Doctor Who - all four specials.
7. Favourite actor of the year?
Honestly it's gotta be David Tennant. Like, between Good Omens and Doctor Who? Yeah. Neil Newbon comes in a very close second, though!
8. Game of the year?
It's a. It's actually a tie which is goddamn unheard of in a Zelda release year, but Baldur's Gate 3 genuinely nearly kicked Tears of the Kingdom aside??
9. Best month for you this year?
Oh man tricky. Do I say October because I went on my first actual proper holiday in eight and a half years? November for the Maneskin concert? Or do they lose points because I had COVID in late Oct/early Nov? Let's skip both and go with June (Vivid down in Sydney and the single greatest sorbet I've ever tried, a super fun VtM tabletop session, and got Operation YEETerus more or less confirmed)!
10. Something that made you cry this year?
Cried pretty much the whole way through the end of Tears of the Kingdom, does that count?
11. Something you want to do again next year?
Ooh I'd love to go back down to Sydney for Vivid!
12. Talk about a new friend you made this year
Shrug emoji. You're all cool.
13. How was your birthday this year?
Super chill. Ordered pizza and ate ice cream, and a few days earlier when my brother came up, we went to one of our favourite Lebanese restaurants.
14. Favourite book you read this year?
A top three - Hell Followed With Us, Space Opera, and Camp Damascus! You can check my book-specific stuff here!
15. What's a bad habit you picked up this year?
Not sure I picked any up? Still haven't ditched the finger-chewing, alas.
16. Post a picture from the beginning of the year
A haul from Sydney in January. Hell Followed With Us and Legends and Lattes were bought new, as were most of the CDs. The other three books and the Sigur Ros CD were second-hand.
17. Post a picture from the end of the year
Okay so on the cruise (late October, I'm gonna say it counts) each floor on the stairwell nearest our cabin had these like, sailing/ships/cruising-type collages, right? Golden Age of Sail, 50s cruising, all that stuff. Which is fine! Great! Except one of them was this!
For the love of god, why would you think an image of the Titanic sinking would be appropriate for a cruise ship?!
18. A memorable meal this year?
The hazelnut sorbet of the gods. Listen. Sydneysiders, listen, if Rivareno Gelato is doing the hazelnut that week you have to try it.
19. What're you excited about for next year?
Australian Literature Festival at Sea! Not until December, but it should be fun as hell!
20. What's something you learned this year?
I did a course on how to make an author site! I should. Do that.
21. What's something new about your place of residence (room, home, or general location) now vs the start of the year?
We started fixing up the old, kinda leaking upstairs bathroom! Gonna be moving back upstairs once it's done!
22. Favourite place you visited this year?
Eden in southern NSW, and Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary in Hobart <3 Both on the cruise. Eden was absolutely gorgeous and Bonorong had critters.
23. If you could send a message to yourself back on the first day of the year, what would it be?
You're gonna get COVID on the cruise. Yes, even wearing your mask and sanitising every five seconds. Bring decongestants because you'll also pick up sinusitis at the same time.
24. Did you keep any New Year's Resolutions?
Didn't make any :D
25. Did you create any characters (in games, art, or writing) this year? Describe one
Probably the two main ones are my first two BG3 characters? A custom Tav, Ta'varin 'Tae' Arkenval, and my beloved Durge baby, Tavias. I'm probably most attached to Tavias, he is going through The Horrors while being the pureblooded child of the God of Murder and also just trying to be a nice person. Wish him luck as I enter act 3!

The Fifties
The Queen’s Coronation
After the death of King George VI, the then Princess Elizabeth had to take over the throne. The Coronation took place in Westminster Abbey on 2 June 1953, conducted by Dr Geoffrey Fisher, Archbishop of Canterbury.
It was the first televised coronation of all time, as the ceremony was broadcast on radio around the world, and at the Queen’s request, on television for the first time. There were more than 2,000 journalists and 500 photographers from 92 nations on the Coronation route.

The Milky Way (1940)
"The Milky Way" is a beautiful little animated short from back in 1940. It was produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM). MGM's animation department created a series called "Happy Harmonies," and "The Milky Way" is one of the cartoons from that series. The film was produced by Rudolf Ising and Hugh Harman - two animators who bounced around from studio to studio throughout the Golden Age of Animation. It has received an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Short Subject in 1940, which is a testament to its artistic and technical achievements.
Technique
One of the most distinctive features of the production technique was the use of a multiplane camera. This camera allowed different layers of animation cels to be filmed at varying distances from the camera, creating a sense of depth and dimension in the animation. This technique made the animation appear more three-dimensional and added depth to the scenes, giving it a unique and visually appealing quality. This was a groundbreaking technique at the time and contributed to the film's acclaim. The use of depth and dimension in the animation was achieved through the skillful manipulation of multiplane cameras, which allowed for more complex and visually impressive scenes. The film was notable for its imaginative use of animation to bring celestial imagery to life. Fireflies in the night sky form constellations that tell stories, showcasing a creative approach to storytelling and animation. The film emphasized artistic craftsmanship, using hand-drawn animation and meticulous painting techniques to create visually stunning scenes. The attention to detail and artistic creativity made "The Milky Way" stand out as a visually captivating work of art. The final result was a fully animated short film that combined hand-drawn characters and backgrounds with innovative multiplane camera techniques to create the illusion of depth and dimension. This was a labor-intensive and artistic process that was the standard for animated films of that era.
Representation
Three tiny kittens, who were deprived of milk as a consequence of misplacing their mittens, embark on an adventure to the Milky Way in a hot air balloon. During their cosmic journey, they encounter various celestial wonders, such as a lunar surface resembling cheese, a high-speed comet train, a Mars that shoots stars, and the prominent constellations of the Big and Little Dipper. The narrative is rich in fantastical elements as the kittens journey to the Milky Way in a hot air balloon and encounter a series of playful and comical events in outer space. The story highlights themes of curiosity, escapism, and the world of dreams and imagination, where the boundaries of reality are blurred. It showcases the joy of exploration, the unexpected twists that can occur in a dreamlike setting, and the humorous consequences of their actions. Overall, the story is a creative and lighthearted tale that appeals to the imagination and sense of wonder.
Reception
"The Milky Way" was shown in theaters as a theatrical animated short, typically as part of a larger program that included feature films. During the era in which it was released (the Golden Age of Animation), animated shorts were a common feature before the main movie, and they were highly anticipated and well-received by audiences. At the time of its original release, "The Milky Way" was likely received positively by audiences. It was a part of MGM's animated short film series, and these shorts often featured imaginative storytelling, humor, and memorable characters. "The Milky Way," in particular, was a playful adaptation of the nursery rhyme "The Three Little Kittens," which was familiar to many, making it relatable and enjoyable for viewers.
Today, "The Milky Way" is recognized as a classic animated short from the Golden Age of Animation. While it may not have the same level of fame as some other animated characters like Tom and Jerry (which were also produced by MGM), it is appreciated by animation enthusiasts, historians, and those with an interest in vintage animation. The response to such classic animated shorts like "The Milky Way" today is generally positive, as they hold historical and artistic significance in the world of animation. They are valued for their nostalgia and as examples of the creativity and artistry of the time.
