Winter Solstice 2020
Winter solstice 2020  there was a lot of weird things in the sky that day. Unfortunately the sky was cloudy in Detroit, but my mother took this photo in North Carolina on that day. I just happened to ask her to look out her window since the sky was clear and there was this bright green object moving around the sun.  She sent me the photo and I decided to capture it in this brooch for her.

'Unhinged' is Not Unhinged Enough
“Unhinged” was one of the first movies to be released in theaters near the end of the COVID-19 pandemic. This may very well be its biggest claim to fame as what results is an action thriller which is never boring, but hints at a motion picture which could have been so much better than it is. As much as I want to look at a movie for what it is as opposed to what I want it to be, this one has me…

Song Review: Simple Minds - "Solstice Kiss"
On June 30, 2023, Simple Minds released “Solstice Kiss,” a song from the band’s 18th studio album Direction of the Art that was also featured on The Macallan’s global brand film, The Spirit of 1926. The last time I remember hearing a new song by Simple Minds was 1995’s “She’s A River,” so when I saw that the band had released a new song recently, I was quite curious to hear what they had to offer…

i decided to get needlessly curious about the progression of time in tfota, then realized there wasn't much about it online. so for the like. two other people in the world who care about this stuff, here's what I've got:
jude says her birthday is nov 13, 2001 when telling dain a series of truths + one lie. the lie is that she can't swim, so we can assume this is truly her birthday
madoc says the new king will be coronated on the autumn solstice, which typically falls in late september (if you want to be really annoying about details, the autumn solstice was on sep 23 in 2019, the year tcp is set)
jude is seventeen at the beginning of tcp (7 yrs old when taken to faerie, and tcp takes place 10 years after that). given the timing of the coronation and her november birthday, she turns 18 during the time skip between tcp and twk (happy bday queen, pls take it easy on poisoning yourself)
twk starts with 5 months of jude's bargain with cardan already past, and by the end (when he proposes) 7 months of the bargain have gone by. this puts us at like... springtime. maybe april?
then there's the tqon exile time jump, which the internet says was four months (i tried looking in the book and couldn't find an exact number, but jude does make a comment about it being early autumn near the beginning of tqon, so this (or even slightly longer) checks out)
tqon timeline is a little foggy but it's pretty fast-paced, so I'm going to posit that it's about a month (feel free to drop details below, i just couldn't find much)
tldr: tfota all takes place in the span of about a year, which we already knew, but it's fun (for me lol) to see it all laid out. jude is presumably not far from her 19th birthday when she's officially coronated at the end of tqon. this also means that oak’s books are set in the future! (2028, i think?)
also, if I’ve done the math right, jude was exiled in the mortal world in 2020, so covid does not exist in this universe. good for them

The Shortest Day - Welcome, Yule!
What better way to spend the longest night than around a nice campfire and some hot chocolate, under the stars? (I wish! But I'll live vicariously through the Pines, as usual.)
Kind of an update of a similar piece I did in 2020; and in a way, kind of a sequel, I guess.
With the winter solstice past, the days grow longer once again. But winter isn't done with us yet, so keep those warm drinks coming!

~ in honor of the winter solstice ~ sherlock fic recs ~
Tumblr media
So, I’m hoping that the northern hemisphere’s longest night of the year giving way to the first rays of sunlight will prove to be more than symbolic as a beginning of pushing away the maleficence of the last year that stopped the planet in its tracks. Figuring an offering might be in order, here are some of my favorite light-vanquishing-darkness tales of natural magic where Sherlock and John come together to repair part of their broken worlds … Happy yuletide reading! (… and if you miss celebrating the solstice in-person with other humans, here’s a virtual celebration that occurs on the 21st :-)
Once Upon a Beast Becoming by @antietamfalls from 2015 [ao3, 20k words, rated T] A story set in motion by a druid’s curse, where Sherlock’s place in the natural order can only be reclaimed if he can gain the affection of someone who can see him as he really is, something Sherlock is highly skeptical about: “People did not like him, and humans least of all. To think one might come to love him was inconceivably daft.” And then there is John. The catch is that it all must transpire within one night, and the playing field is even more tilted since John has to be introduced not only to Sherlock, but to the magic inside himself and around him, all as the clock ticks down while something evil and destructive is stalking London. It’s an elegantly-rendered fairytale and John and Sherlock’s interactions are a delight even as the stakes ratchet up.
Cost of a Wish by @slashscribe from 2014 [ao3, 102k, rated E / fusion with  xxxHOLiC, a Japanese manga] Sherlock is the proprietor of a wish-granting shop that John is drawn into through one puzzling happenstance after another until he begins to come into his own powers. This requires that he navigate multiple realities that threaten death and destruction and by means of which he may or may not be able to untangle the binding that prevents Sherlock’s deepest wish from being brought to life. The episodes in the chapters are fascinating, the Sherlock series’ characters in addition to John and Sherlock turn up in especially memorable ways, and about half-way through appears what might be the most ridiculously cute animal in all of Sherlock fic, a pipe-fox who is worth the price of admission alone.
De Veritate Unicornis Modernus by @tepidspongebath from 2013 [ao3, 5k, rated G / fusion with The Last Unicorn] This is John’s story through-and-through, with the world-weariness and despair that he displays in the first episode of the series portrayed here as the outcome of the most famous creature in the medieval bestiary becoming trapped in a mortal body – it’s not civilian life he’s having trouble adjusting to, it’s the loss of his immortal nature. His ancient purpose in life of finding humans to cherish and keep right is rekindled by crossing paths with a consulting detective entirely too enamored of dead bodies who is in need of his influence (and, luckily, possesses the necessary attribute of being a virgin :-) Sketching out the beats of a mythologized A Study in Pink is very cunningly done.
The Stars Move Still by @beautifulfiction from [ao3, 96k, rated E] This is such an impressively plotted fic, which right at the top plunges you into one of the most disquieting Moriarties you’ll come across (a demon, it turns out, that was considered too powerful to bind – Mycroft notes that “The few, previous attempts to which I have found a reference had apocalyptic consequences. The last time an effort was made to summon and tame him appeared to result in the Black Death.”) The portrayal of Sherlock and John’s deepening relationship is exquisite, and the story logic flows from a number of clever plot twists, from the use of St. Paul’s to how Afghanistan’s dreamworld matters, and John’s ease with sprite wrangling (which is intoxicating to read!).
Unsettled by @axemeaboutaxinomancy from 2013 [ao3, 34k, rated E / fusion with His Dark Materials] This amazing fic not only became one of my favorite narratives of Sherlock and John finding each other admidst the mutually transformative effects that begin with their meeting at Barts in repairing the seemingly irreparable ravages of their pasts, but as my introduction to the way the world of HDM works (in other words, you don’t need to be familiar with Pullman for the story to cast its magic). The double resonance of Sherlock and John’s thoughts and feelings being conveyed through their animal daemons is totally captivating, not to mention that Ferendala the wolfhound and Vyarosse the cat are some of the most interesting OCs in Sherlock ficdom. The daemons also help to power the plot, not least, as the author lays out, because “Sherlock’s dæmon hadn’t settled. Once John realized that, so much made sense. Though so much else didn’t, because it practically wasn’t possible.”
A follow-up (the two titles are under the series name “The Utmost Edge of Hazard”) is Snowlight [ao3, 1,277 words, rated E], which takes place at Christenmas time, and has a lovely solstice vibe amidst the mutually satisfying physical activities Sherlock and John have in progress. (Will make more sense if Unsettled is read first.)
