Solstalgia - Creative Cultures and Context
CCC summary Generation Anthropocene: How humans have altered the planet for ever, Robert Mcfarlane
Robert McFarlane analyses the “Anthropocene”, how the word originated and how it is related to todays society. Anthrcopocene has been defined with the definition being “the new epoch of geological time in which human activity is considered such a powerful influence on the environment” (Mcfarland)
Mcfarlane’s raises awareness of our effect on the world and how on our environment has been catastrophically changed, leaving a mark on a geographical and astrological level. Being in New Zealand places us away from a majority of the harmful aspects but none the less we contribute through carbon emissions etc… The term “solstalgia” is mentioned as a “form or physic or existential distress caused by environmental town”
(Mcfarland) which is a home sickness but instead of leaving home the home changes. This is a closer to home topic as the rivers and landscapes are now so polluted we cant swim in them, once a fond memory now solstalgia.
The Antropocene is a topic many artist explore and Mcfarlane clarifies that this art is generally about the loss of something or the disappearance of memories and home“Taken in sum, they speak of our stuttering attempts to describe just what it is we have done.” (Mcfarland)
