I realized that I never posted my big project of 2021, painting CMON’s Bloodborne: The Board Game!

This was an all-in pledge on the Kickstarter back in 2019 I think it was? Included here (and through the imgur link at the top and bottom, seriously, click it!) is just under 200 miniatures and almost everything they sent me. I still haven’t done the duplicate Hunters that serve as random minibosses, but they’re on my list for sure. Either way, I did paint all the Hunters already, so maybe just imagine the same thing but with bloody weapons and red bases or something.

These were really, really fun to paint, and having such an expansive project to work on over the course of the entire year (or two 4-month chunks with a couple weeks of break in between) was super great for seeing myself improve and try new things as I cracked into each new box.

The minis are simply superb, packed full of detail, and a lot of them are actually quite large, which makes the finished product look even better as it looms over the player characters. I think everything is basically true to game-scale, except maybe Ebreitas being a bit smaller? Her wings sure add a sizeable footprint. I dunno, maybe not having to stare up at her changes things.

Boy can I do that! My top recommendation would be Spirit Island, every game is it's own challenge, you can adjust the difficulty as much as you want, and it works no matter how many players you have. I play it true solo quite frequently, but I mix it up every now and then and control 2, or even 3 spirits.

My own personal favorite is Legendary, the marvel deckbuilding game. It's alright true solo, but it really shines when controlling two players. It does require at least the dark city expansion to shine however, the core box is fine, but it won't last forever. With just dark city, so many different combinations are available, and any additional expansions make it so that you can have endless different setups!

Other games that I really enjoy and would highly recommend are Mage Knight, Terraforming Mars, and A Feast for Odin!

A lot of people I talk to seem to be so surprised that solo boardgames are like, a thing. It's such a nice way to just relax for me, the set up and tear down are calming, it gives me something to focus on, and I just love playing physical games. It's hard to get people together often, but who needs them, I can just play by myself most of the time!

After a day spent saving the realm, let's see what it takes to deduct where planet X is in The Search For Planet X from @playfoxtrotgames and @renegade_game_studios This game is a delightful little puzzle where you take the logic cues you know and learn along the way to determine what is out there and, if you can, which sector contains planet X. On your turn, take some sort of action which will give you more information for your deductions (i.e. there is one asteroid in sectors 1-4) which will cost a certain amount of time. Move your telescope meeple forward one sector for each time and whomever is farthest back takes the next turn, even if that is you. At certain points, get more information about Planet X and offer theories which can score end of game points if you are correct. All in all, a great game. Yes it is app dependent, but that allows for a large amount of replayability. The solo variant is also manageable on the standard side and challenging on the advanced. My favorite part, however, is that you score points for all deductions and bonus points if you are correct. This means it is possible to win without ever finding planet X. Difficult, for sure, but doable.
