Outside the Rain - Harry Styles Series (Part 11)
Part 10
“Woah, woah, woah,” you said looking at your manager in a group meeting. “You want us... to perform at the VMA’s? Before the single drops? Isn’t the whole point to have a surprise drop?”
“Yes, but what about a surprise performance? You could do a simple medley of some of your biggest hits and end with the new single,” she said. “No one besides a few people at MTV will know.”
“We know that never works,” Daisy said. “But I don’t hate the idea. I really wanna get back out on stage and I just think it'll be super bad ass to do it.”
“But aren’t the VMA’s like in two days?” You asked. “How the hell are we going to put together a show in two fucking days?”
“We’ve done it before,” Rachel said.
“True, but we haven’t performed in YEARS together,” you said.
“Are you saying you don’t want to do it?” Daisy asked.
“I never said that,” you sighed. “I just wanted don’t want to have ass something just to make it possible. If we do this, it’s gotta be as close to perfect as possible.”
“We got this, Y/N,” Rachel said. “It’s like riding a bike.”
“I can’t ride a bike for shit,” you joked.
“Yeah, well, not our fault,” she smirked.
**
Once it was decided your group would be performing at the VMA’s, you were in stress and work mode. You all decided to take a quick lunch break and then get to brainstorming and getting with your choreographers. You knew this would be a huge thing for your “comeback”, but putting on a performance in two days... when you were starting from scratch was unheard of.
You texted Harry to meet you for lunch near the studio. You knew the next few days were going to be a whirlwind, so you needed at least an hour of calm. You had arrived at the cafe before Harry and waved to him when he walked into inside.
“Hey, what’s up?” He asked.
“We’re performing at the VMA’s,” you whispered.
“WHAT! Holy shit!” He said. “That’s amazing, baby.”
“Did I mention it’s in two fucking days and we’ve got zero plans right now?” You groaned.
“Oh, yeah, that’s fucked,” he said.
You glared at him, “That’s not helping.”
“Sorry,” he winced. “Look, I know there’s pressure, but I’m sure you’re going to do great. You girls always put on a show. Is it going to be announced?”
“Nope,” you shook your head. “No one is going to know until we’re on stage.”
“That’s so fucking bad ass,” he said.
“What is with you and Daisy!” You groaned.
“Am I missing something?” He laughed.
“Not really,” you laughed. “Anyway, so I really hate this because you came all the way here, but I don’t know how free I’m going to be the next few days.”
“Baby,” he said taking your hand into his, “It’s okay. I understand. I’m here for a while. Now, the real question is... do I get to join rehearsals?”
“It’d be boring as hell,” you said.
“Not for me,” he smiled. “I want to see how you work.”
“Don’t you want to be surprised for the final performance?” You asked.
“I’ll love it either way,” he smiled.
“Speaking of the performance,” you said. “Would you want to be my date for the VMA’s or is that like.. too soon for us?”
Harry took a sip of his water and hesitated for a bit. “I mean, I would love to go. I want to go, but I don’t know if we should arrive together, if that makes sense.”
You were a little disappointed at his answer, but you completely understood.
“It does,” you said. “And it’s in New Jersey... We’re going to do a day here and then fly out tomorrow night.”
“Wow, that’s really cutting it close,” he sighed.
“Right? Like why wasn’t this decided like a week ago?” You sighed.
“Well, look at this way,” he said. “When you pull off an epic performance, you’ll get to say you put it together in less than two days.”
“Always looking on the bright side aren’t you?” You smiled.
“That’s what I’m here for,” he smiled.
**
It was the next day and you were in rehearsals. You spent the rest of yesterday, after your lunch with Harry, planning out the performance and now it was time to put it all together. You all had twelve hours before you boarded the plane to New Jersey and time started now.
Four hours had passed and you had run through the entire performance of four songs about ten times. Within the four songs, there were a couple of dance breaks and you felt like you were dying. You laid passed out on the floor, not literally, but you wished you were. You stared up at the ceiling.
“Why did we agree to do this again?” You groaned. “We’re halfway through this rehearsal and I’m already dying.”
“Why did we add so many dance breaks?” Daisy groaned. “My legs are jello.”
“Because that’s our thing,” Rachel sighed. “Why is that our thing?”
“Because we’re stupid,” you joked. “I’m starving, but I also feel like I’m gonna throw up if I eat.”
“Take it to the bathroom with that!” Rachel said.
You rolled your eyes. You heard the door of the studio open and you turned your head over in the direction. There was Harry holding a bag of something and about five smoothies in his hand.
“Give me!” You said reaching out your hand, not moving an inch.
He laughed looking at the four of you laying on the floor, “Um, did I miss something?”
“We’re dying,” Jess said.
“And we’re not joking. Every part of my body hurts like a bitch,” you groaned.
“So, I take it rehearsals are going well?” He asked sitting everything down on th ground.
“Fucking peachy,” Daisy said. “Anyway, I’m Daisy. Nice to finally meet you Harold.”
“It’s uh... Harry, actually,” he blushed. “And nice to meet you, as well.”
“Uh, I’m gonna call you Harold for now,” she said.
“It’s her thing,” you groaned. “She always calls my boyfriends by different names or nicknames until she’s sure about them.”
“Let’s just say I’ve never called anyone by their real name because they never made it that far,” she added.
“Noted,” Harry nodded. “And that’s going to change this time.”
“We’ll see,” she smirked.
“Don’t be fucking Rude, Daisy,” Rachel rolled her eyes. “Welcome, Harry. Sorry, we’re meeting looking like a bunch of hot ass messes.”
“No, you all look beautiful, lovely,” he said quickly.
“No, we don’t. We fucking stink,” Daisy said.
“It’s true,” you added. “Our sweat is sweating.”
“Well, I brought some food and smoothies. I figured you all would need some fuel,” he said changing the subject.
“Thanks, babe,” you smiled slowing sitting up. “Gah, my abs.”
“After our performance, we’re all going straight to the fucking spa,” Jess said.
“Sounds like a plan to me,” Rachel said.
You all moved closer to the food and Harry sat next to you. You smiled kissing his cheek, “Thank you for bringing this.”
“You’re welcome,” he smiled. “So, besides being in miserable pain and sweat, how are you girls feeling about the performance.”
“I’ll admit I was little worried about it, but our last few run throughs went great. I’ve got faith we’re going to kill it on stage tomorrow night,” Rachel said.
“I have no doubt,” Harry said.
“So, Harry, have you always been a fan?” Daisy asked.
“How do you have the energy for twenty questions?” You groaned.
“It takes my mind off the pain,” she smirked.
“No, it’s fine,” Harry smiled. “And I have. My sister and I went to a few shows whenever you came to the UK.”
“That’s really adorable, actually,” Rachel smiled.
“Oh my god,” you shook your head. “I’m so sorry about this,” you said looking at Harry.
“Hey, this will save time during our flight tonight,” Daisy said. “He is going with us, right?”
You looked over at Harry, “Yeah, of course,” he said.
“Perfect,” she smirked. “So, basically it’s either we interrogate him now or on the plane.”
“How about neither?” You suggested. “Especially, since you three were so gun-ho on us getting together.”
“Doesn’t matter. We still have jobs to do,” Jess said.
“It’s fine,” Harry laughed. “I don’t mind it.”
“Just wait until she starts getting into the real personal details,” Rachel said. “You might be running for the hills after that.”
“Hey! That only happened one time and it was for the best was it not?” She smirked.
“What would I ever do without the three of you?” You joked.
“Die alone?” Daisy suggested.
You all laughed, winced, and finished eating before getting back to work.
**
Once you were finished with rehearsals, you went straight home to finish packing and freshen up before meeting everyone at the airport.
“I’m more than ready for a hot shower,” you groaned walking into your bedroom.
“I can’t believe you danced for over eight hours,” he said. “I would have passed out after like two.”
“Yeah, we’ll we can’t all be amazing dancers,” you joked. “Ow.”
“How long as it been since you’ve had rehearsals like today?” He asked.
“Since before the last tour we did together,” you said. “My solo stuff was never centered around dancing, so I never had a lot to practice.”
“Wow,” he said. “No wonder you all were about to die,” he laughed.
“Exactly,” you laughed turning on the shower and pulling off your sweaty clothes.
“Do you need me to do anything while you shower?” He asked standing in the doorway. “I can take the bags downstairs.”
“Or you can join me in the shower and rub my shoulders,” you said.
“Well, I can’t say no to that,” he smirked taking off his shirt.
You both get into the shower. Your tense muscles start to loosen up a bit as the hot water hits you. You close your eyes as Harry rubs your shoulders and leaves kisses on your neck.
“Getting on a plane is the last thing I want right now,” you groaned. “I just want to go to bed and sleep for four days.”
“We can sleep on the plane,” he said. “I’ll cuddle with you.”
“Yeah... that’s not gonna happen,” you said. “You’ve never flown with us... and well, sleep never happens.”
“Is this your way of telling me I should prepare myself?” he joked.
“Hell yeah,” you laughed.
“Bloody hell, what did I get myself into,” he laughed.
Once you were out of the shower, you got dressed, finished packing, and headed to the airport. It was still surreal that this was happening and even though you were beyond sore and a little nervous about what could happen, you couldn’t be more excited and pumped for what was to come.

MARS
Despite not being one of Dimensions’ big international pushes, MARS’s comebacks this year have seemingly garnered them more interest from overseas, evidenced by an offer they get to appear in a series off YouTube videos aimed at Latin American fans. These videos, a series of four, will be filmed on two different days this month. On the first day, they’ll film a simple Q&A with their Latin fans and then will be challenged to choreograph a dance in teams in five minutes to a CNCO song. Team A (members listed below) will win the choreography challenge and get to try Guaraná soft drink and Renata cookies before giving a performance of “Callin’”. On the second filming day, they’ll be told they’re filming individual reactions to the music video for “Mi Gente” and be met with a Halloween-appropriate jump scare part way through. They’ll then do an actual reaction to the music video for a separate video.

Other than the traveling to and from Europe and Singapore, this month is a reprieve from the busy schedules the group has had since they began touring. That said, their time spent not touring is still not a break and members are expected to remain in a work mindset as they approach awards season and the final details of their attendance at award shows is negotiated. Word is, the members are likely to be receiving some long-awaited good news next month regarding their debt with the company.

JESSIE J TALKS TO THE TIMES!
The most honest interview 💕
---------------------------------------------------
The singer Jessie J has always worn her heart on her sleeve. Nine years ago, when she was proudly bisexual, she cast her female lover in the video for her breakthrough hit, Do It Like A Dude. In 2014, as she migrated towards heterosexuality, she announced the change with a forthright tweet: ‘I fancy/date/love men and only men’. It’s no surprise that with romance again in the air, her new boyfriend looms large in her conversation.
“I’m thinking about calling my next tour ‘Magic Mike and I’ and having Chan open for me as a stripper,” she cackles. “He’d do it too! That would sell some tickets, eh?”
“Chan” is the American actor Channing Tatum, star of the 2012 comedy Magic Mike as well as such box-office hits as 21 Jump Street and Foxcatcher. The 31-year-old Jessie, born Jessica Cornish, rearranges the hem of her figure-hugging brown dress when she talks about Tatum. They have been dating since last autumn.
Then, as if by magic, he texts.
“Aw, he wants to know what suit he should wear for his meeting,” she chuckles, gazing lovingly at her screen.
It seems safe to ask how they met.
“Uh uh, no,” she says. “Chan and I got photographed before our relationship was even a thing and that created such pressure. We’ve needed time to get to know each other. We’ve just had our first holiday together, which was wonderful, but that’s all I’m saying.”
Is it fair to say she is happy living on 21 Jump Street?
“Oh I am very happy on 21 Jump Street! I always look for a guy with a good sense of humour and good morals. And hygiene. A man who showers is very important.”
It’s almost ten years since Essex-born Cornish became famous with her self-penned hits Do it Like a Dude and Price Tag. She was a contemporary of Adele’s at the Brit performing arts school, and enjoyed Top Ten album success in the UK and US. Yet in the UK she seemed to get bogged down in pointless debates over her sexual preferences (she was heavily criticised for explaining her bisexuality as a “phase”), and moved to the US in 2014.
“First and foremost I regret ever tweeting it was a phase,” she says.
Why apologise? It was a phase, wasn’t it?
“It’s a hurtful expression for some. But I was young. Aged 19, I was madly in love with a woman and I moved in with her. She was not my first girlfriend either. I was heartbroken when that relationship ended, but then I dated guys and women. I was a young woman experimenting between the ages of 20 and 30 like anyone should.”
Behind the scenes, life has become quite serious for the singer. Cornish has struggled with a heart condition called Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome since she was eight years old, and suffered a minor stroke in 2015, forcing the cancellation of some tour dates. Then she was diagnosed with adenomyosis, a condition in which the inner lining of the womb breaks through the muscle wall. It can cause agonising stomach cramps and heavy periods. It can also indicate a heightened risk of miscarriage or premature birth. It was a brutal blow.
“The pain I’ve been through with this disease is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to face,” she says. “I get severe pain, which I have to manage, and psychologically, well, having children was always a big thing for me. I may be infertile, which, not gonna lie, would be devastating.”
Adenomyosis doesn’t preclude having children, but doctors offered her a hysterectomy, so I can only conclude that her case is serious. She declined the operation and instead pinned her hopes on a change of diet. She hasn’t eaten sugar for four years, and two years ago she went vegan.
“Basically, I am still hoping. Some days it seems possible I might have children and others not. I have to accept that becoming a mother is going to be a battle.”
Cornish is disarmingly frank. She has even channelled her anguish into a song called Four Letter Word. “Baby” is the four-letter word in question. The lyrics address her feelings of heartbreak to a notional child: “I pray I get the chance to bloom,” she sings, “cause someone’s ready for me, waiting to feel all my love and make you with me.”
She isn’t about to discuss whether Tatum might be waiting, but she has met his six-year-old daughter, Everly, from a previous relationship. I suggest that must have been hard.
“God no! She’s just six and absolutely lovely,” she says.
Of course there are other ways she could have children . . .
“Oh yeah, I might go down the route of adoption or even surrogacy. I pray I have children the natural way, but if not, I’ll deal with it.”
Cornish has just returned to our screens as a judge on ITV’s The Voice Kids, a junior version of the adult singing talent show. She beams at the very idea of mentoring 7 to 14-year-olds.
“Oh my God, when a seven-year-old sings a solo you just want to cuddle them. It’s a totally different feel to the adult version of the show.” Cornish was a judge for four years on this version too, before she left in 2013.
Cornish is warm, funny and open. It seems extraordinary that another journalist last year charged her with an “unbearable earnestness and an astonishing lack of humility”.
“Oh, but I cringe how loud I was in the past sometimes,” she says.
She once complained that the UK didn’t take her voice seriously. Nevertheless, she has established a global career. Tomorrow she flies to perform in Romania, then returns to London briefly before setting off to her second home in Los Angeles.
“I’ve been performing since I was a kid, so to me life is work work work. Obviously my health issues mean I’ve had to learn balance. I now have Sundays off. I wake, have a probiotic, then a celery juice. After that it’s breakfast and then a workout. If I’m in London I Iike to walk through the city and then I’ll go home, meditate and then cook.”
In LA the weather is more reliable. She might head off camping or hiking for the weekend.
“I’m happy outdoors and I’m happy around people. Don’t I look happy to you?”
I’d say she looks reasonably content. But then her phone pings again. A broad grin speeds across her face. Now she looks happy.
The Voice Kids continues tonight on ITV1 at 8pm

Don’t panic if you still haven’t planned that all-important long haul holiday. A city break can be even more enjoyable in the summer months, meaning that you can enjoy a holiday for a lot less. You might even get lucky with a beach on your doortsep!
With almost guaranteed sunshine and a real buzz during tourist season, we’ve listed some essential destinations to consider exploring – whether you go solo or with friends and family. From inner city walks to green open spaces, sizzling street food to fine dining, here’s how to enjoy the best city breaks for summer.
Barcelona
Barcelona hardly needs an introduction, but if you are yet to experience the magic of this Spanish city, then let us inspire your itinerary. The best way to explore this metropolitan city is on foot, taking in all of its unique character and great energy.
Boasting iconic gothic architecture in its Gothic Quarter, Barcelona is one of the most stunning cities to photograph. Here you’ll see some of architect Antonio Gaudi’s original works, discover more about Picasso’s youth, and learn about Barcelona’s Jewish past. Portal d’Angel is one of the busiest shopping streets in the area, while nightlife gets lively with late-night clubs and bars.
As well as a cocktail of trendy hotels, museums, galleries and famous landmarks, Barcelona offers plenty of green spaces to kick back and relax. Park Güell is the most notable – a public park designed by Gaudi that emulates an English garden. With over 4 km of coastline, you can take your pick of local beaches too so you can enjoy the pace of city life alongside slow beach days. With temperatures reaching the high 20s, you won’t need much persuading. Sound good?
Budapest
Steeped in history and home to a collection of UNESCO World Heritage Sites – including Castle Hill, Matthias Church and Fisherman’s Bastion – Budapest is certainly an impressive city break destination. Culture vultures will appreciate the vast choice of museums, art galleries and places to hang out. And, every August, Sziget festival kicks off with a line-up of headline music acts, circus and visual arts.
The Hungarian capital is also home to some incredible thermal baths. Relax in hot, mineral-rich waters for a spa experience like no other – perfect for a romantic couples activity. Széchenyi Thermal Bath is the largest medicinal bath in Europe, with an astonishing 21 pools. If you don’t want to physically get wet, head to the river bank where you can enjoy scenic views over the city or even hop on a river cruise.
New York
New York, New York! A few summer days in this metropolis are just enough to get a taste of the Big Apple. Whether you’ve come here to shop designer brands on Fifth Avenue, explore the trendy neighbourhood of Soho, or soak up the bright lights of Times Square, there’s more than enough to keep you busy.
A trip isn’t complete without glimpsing the world-famous sights or wandering through Central Park where you can enjoy a walking tour, rent a bike or ride a horse and carriage. Head to Ground Zero, the Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building and admire their incredible architecture. Known as the city that doesn’t sleep, New York’s nightlife is booming with endless cocktail bars, underground comedy clubs and live music venues.
Edinburgh
Densely packed with its Medieval Old Town and elegant Georgian New Town, Edinburgh is jam-packed with attractions and sightseeing opportunities. History buffs will love the imposing Edinburgh Castle perched on Castle Rock, and the ancient Royal Mile. As Edinburgh is a walkable city, you can easily explore the retail shops and restaurants of Princes Street, Grassmarket and Victoria Street.
The outdoor space means the city never feels too crowded. Walkers will enjoy Holyrood Park, while Inverleith Park is the perfect spot for families and picnics. The Royal Botanical Garden displays a stunning collection of water features and plants in landscaped gardens.
Between 3 – 27 August 2018, the world-famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival takes place and sees the city come alive with performing arts, dance, comedy and music. There’s a host of children’s shows, circus acts, exhibitions and spoken word too across hundreds of venues.
Berlin
Just a short flight from the UK, Berlin is a cheap and accessible city break that offers something for everyone. Once a divided city, Berlin is now a melting pot of cultures and this is evident in everything from the food to the fashion. There are cool coffee shops, techno nightclubs, rooftop bars, art galleries and street food markets in abundance around the city.
One of the best things about Berlin is the transport systems. Get around at speed on the underground tubes, on foot or by bike. Explore hip neighbourhoods like Kreuzberg with its vintage shops, street art and the East Side Gallery. Or venture to the well-groomed Prenzlauer Berg popular with families for its leafy parks and café culture.
The fascinating city is also home to Museum Island on the river Spree; you’ll find the acclaimed Pergamon Museum here. Iconic landmarks like the Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie, Reichstag Building and sobering Holocaust Memorial are must-sees in Berlin.
Dubrovnik
Surrounded by the Adriatic Sea, Dubrovnik is a beautifully attractive city and one of Europe’s best city break destinations. The hilly landscape is filled with Terracotta-tiled roofs, medieval architecture and pebbled streets, making it a perfect location for photography enthusiasts.
A few days here is enough to soak up the wonderful history that Croatia has preserved. Within the ancient city walls, you’ll find remnants of Forts that date back to the 9th century. For panoramic views over the Old Town and Old City Port, hop aboard a cable car to the top of Mount Srd.
With temperatures in the high 20s during summer, it’s the ideal time to island hop to some of Dubrovnik’s neighbouring islands including Hvar, Vis and Mljet.

The Edinburgh Fringe Festival is going online. (Check out the thirty below.) Now, officially; the oldest and largest fringe festival has been canceled because of the pandemic. But the festival wants to “Keep the Fringe spirit alive” by encouraging theater companies to put their shows online. This offers New York theatergoers a chance to get a Fringe fix in August for the first time since 2016, when the International Fringe Festival celebrated its 20th anniversary, then shut down for a year — and then announced it was moving to Octobe
Edinburgh’s Fringe is not New York’s Fringe. It’s unjuried, and it’s….overwhelming. In 2018, there were reportedly 3,548 different shows performed in 317 venues; in 2019, more than three million people attended, which was more than six times the entire population of this city in Scotland. The New York Fringe never had more than 75,000 theatergoers attending some (juried) 200 shows in 16 venues.
There was never a way to offer an adequate preview of the Edinburgh Fringe (the way I did every year of the New York Fringe), and it’s not much easier now when Edinburgh is coming to your living room — or, in at least one case, your bathroom.
“Play In Your Bathtub,” an audio play that I reviewed when it debuted in April is going to Edinburgh. It’s one of eighty shows “all written and produced in lockdown” that are being presented for free over the next three weeks at The Space UK, which this year is a virtual space. This is just one venue at Virtual Edinburgh, but even 80 is too much. So below are the 30 that are going online starting this Saturday, August 8th at TheSpaceUK website. A new batch of roughly the same number will go online every Saturday for the rest of August. Click on each poster to read the descriptions.
For what it’s worth, the ones that most intrigue me include two from the Edinburgh-based Anomaly Theatre Company: “Interrodated, “He thinks he’s interrogating a suspect. She thinks she’s on a blind date. This is not going to end well.” “Glitch” A driverless car runs over a woman, and has to learn grief. and “Bookshelf Ballad,” in which the books we always see behind the TV pundits are given voice to say what THEY are thinking.
after/before Out of Kilter Theatre Struggling with feelings of loss and detachment Alicia, waking from a vivid dream, is disorientated; is she really awake? Then an unlikely companion offers an opportunity to find an answer … and perhaps a chance for the contact she craves. @outofkiltermcr
After the Turn: The Mystery of Bly Manor Nine Knocks Theatre Five years after the tragedy of Bly Manor, the world wants answers. Now researchers begin to uncover the sinister truth. Based on Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw, Nine Knocks presents a modernised tale of the ghosts within ourselves. @Nine_Knocks

The indispensable guide to finding the ideal Greek Isle for you
The Greek islands are having a moment – but how do you choose from the 6,000 scattered across the Aegean and Ionian seas (albeit only 227 are inhabited)?
Are you looking for an active family holiday or a romantic break? Do you prefer the hustle and bustle of a town or panoramic vistas and secluded coves?
Scroll down to find the best island to suit you.
Crete for history lovers
Historic: Spinalonga, above, was made famous in Victoria Hislop’s book The Island and is a short hop from Crete
On every visit to the largest Greek isle, I discover something new (or rather old) – not surprising given that Crete has been occupied by invaders such as the Romans, Ottomans and Venetians. Vestiges of the past can be seen everywhere, from Castello a Mare, which squats at the entrance of the old port of Heraklion, to the Fortezza, the Venetian fortress at Rethymnon. Thanks to its southerly position, Crete has the longest summer in Greece and is a winter resort too. Blazing sunshine in December? Absolutely.
Don’t miss: The magnificent ruins of the Minoan palace at Knossos and other Minoan sites such as Phaistos and Ayia. The Venetian port of Chania with its lighthouse is a charming town to explore too.
Fans of Victoria Hislop’s bestselling historical novel The Island must head to nearby Spinalonga (ten minutes by boat from the village of Plaka), which was famously a leper colony for much of the 20th Century.
Top tip: You need at least seven days to do Crete justice. Two weeks? Even better.
Take me there: Many airlines fly direct to the island in high season, including Thomas Cook, Tui and easyJet.
Check in: We pulled up outside what appeared to be a traditional, whitewashed Greek house. Although it’s a five-star resort, the St Nicolas Bay Hotel has no desire to showcase glitzy bling or contemporary chic. It’s a Cretan hotel and it wants guests to feel it’s just that. From reception, we made our way down flower-strewn cobbled paths, olive groves and lemon trees. It felt like an unspoiled stone-built Cretan village, not least because the resort has its own pretty chapel.
Simple chic continued in our suite, complete with its own pool and framed by a picture-perfect sea view. In the resort, guests can dip into two outdoor pools, and there’s a private cove which tames the sea to become nature’s bathing spot.
The Poseidon spa looms high above the water, and an Elemis facial made for wonderful respite from soaking up the brilliant sun and swimming in the sea.
Foodies will fall in love with the hotel’s three restaurants. Who could tire of the decadent fish buffet with hunks of fresh tuna and smoked salmon tangled with the home-grown herbs that sprout all over the grounds?
The bars, boutiques and tavernas of Agios Nikolaos are a 20-minute stroll minute away. It’s easily manageable thanks to the breeze that blows in on this side of the island. But when you’re lying in the arms of Greek luxury – traditional, hospitable and so keen to please – it seems rude to wander elsewhere.
Olympic Holidays (olympicholidays.com) offers seven nights at St Nicolas Bay Resort Hotel from £1,674pp, based on two adults sharing on a B&B basis and departing Gatwick on August 26.
Kefalonia for first timers
Hidden treasure: Kefalonia’s Lake Melissani with its magical light formations and cool slabs of rock
Immortalised in the Hollywood film Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, the largest Ionian island lures a huge crowd. That said, you can still feel at one with nature in the parks, fir tree forests, and the endless beaches. It’s a perfect entree to the Greek islands.
Don’t miss: The tiny port of Fiskardo, known for its charming 18th Century buildings and fish restaurants, such as Apagio and Panormos, which flank the water’s edge.
If you fancy escaping the heat for a while, head to the subterranean Lake Melissani, with its magical light formations and cool slabs of rock. And the nearby cave of Drogarati, which is 200ft underground, is so renowned for its acoustics that orchestras are known to hold concerts there.
Fans of Constantine Cavafy’s poem Ithaka, or Homer-lovers like me, will want to take a 40-minute ferry trip to the rugged island of Ithaka, the mythical home of Odysseus.
Top tip: Hire a car so that you can enjoy the sheer freedom of cresting mountainous coastal roads – but watch out for stray goats.
Take me there: Fly direct from regional airports with carriers including Thomas Cook, Ryanair and easyJet.
Check in: The Petani Bay, near Lixouri, is an adults-only (over-16s) luxury hotel. It’s small and perfectly formed, with fantastic service and home-cooked food including tiny cheese-filled pies – a local speciality. Set high on a cliff, it has an infinity pool with breathtaking views of the wonderful Petani beach and bay. Prices range from £180 to £330 a night, depending on season and room size (petanibayhotel.gr).
Santorini for romantics
Sitting pretty: The picture-perfect clifftop village of Oia in Santorini, above
On the southern side of the Aegean Sea, this volcanic island is possibly one of the most photographed, with its whitewashed buildings and blue paintwork framed by the cobalt-blue sea. An abundance of adults-only hotels makes this a grown-up place and a magnet for honeymooners of all ages.
Don’t miss: The glorious sunsets or ancient remains at Thira. Boat tours allow you to admire Santorini from afar and drop anchor at bays that are inaccessible by foot. Locals recommend taking the ten-minute ferry ride to the tiny islet of Thirassia, where there is one hotel, 300 residents and not a lot to do except swimming in the clear, shallow waters. It merely adds to the romance.
Top tip: Black-sand, pebbly beaches (pack flip-flops) are not as pretty as clifftop villages such as Oia. In high summer, the beaches become crowded with adults rather than noisy toddlers.
Take me there: There are many direct flights in high season. In low season, you can fly via Athens with Aegean Airlines.
Check in: Opt for a super-luxury hotel to complement the opulent feel of Santorini. The new Andronis Arcadia takes some beating. All rooms are suites and – a first for the island – every suite has sunset views. It is also home to the largest spa on the island. Suites cost from £575 per night on a B&B basis (andronisarcadia.com).
Zakynthos For families of all sizes
The famous shipwreck on the beach at Navagio Bay in Zakynthos – this huge cove can only be reached by boat
Teenagers may enjoy the hedonistic pleasures of Zakynthos town but this island caters for all ages, be it sandy beaches for toddlers or foodie trips for adults. And thanks to its relatively small size, nothing is far away.
Don’t miss: Navagio is one of the most famous beaches in Greece. With the remains of a rusting shipwreck for shade, this huge cove can only be reached by boat. The sea is glassy and the limestone cliffs awesome. Combine a trip to Navagio with a visit to the nearby Blue Caves during an organised three-hour boat tour (getyourguide.com).
Top tip: To get away from it all, the drive up to the Keri Lighthouse works a treat. Here you’ll find the largest Greek flag in the world and views of the fabulous sea.
Take me there: There are regular flights during high season from most UK airports with British Airways and easyJet.
Check in: If you have children aged 12 or over, it’s hard to beat the Olea Suite Contemporary Hellenic on the north-east coast. The hillside location offers splendid isolation, yet it’s only a ten-minute walk to Tsilivi resort. Rooms cost from £393 per night in high season (oleaallsuitehotel.com).
Hydra for authenticity seekers
Known in Greek as Ydhra, this island 50 miles south of Athens feels like an original rather than a printed copy of what a Greek island should be. The harbour and Yhdra town are preserved as a national monument, and this island is traffic-free. Cycling? That’s also against the law. As such, it feels safe and homely for solo travellers.
Don’t miss: The Lazaros Koundouriotis museum, not least because the climb up steep alleyways to this ochre-coloured stone mansion is worth it for the knockout views. Otherwise, roam the town and harbour and marvel at the tiers of grey-stone mansions built mostly by 18th Century merchant families.
Top tip: You’ll need to like walking, so it is not great for young families. Pack good shoes and be prepared to carry your luggage from the harbour (though donkeys can be hired).
Take me there: Fly to Athens and catch the hydrofoil from Piraeus – it takes between one and two hours and runs five times a day.
Check in: The five-star Hydrea Hotel in the port of Idra blends the traditional with the modern. Double rooms cost from £322 in high season (hydrea.gr).
Alonissos for nature lovers
Alonissos is a beautiful and rugged island surrounded by some of the cleanest waters in Greece and one of the most popular hiking destinations in the northern Aegean
A beautiful and rugged island surrounded by some of the cleanest waters in Greece – it is the only permanently inhabited member of a mini-archipelago that has been designated a marine park.
Don’t miss: The island is one of the most popular hiking destinations in the northern Aegean. There are countless routes that have been surveyed, numbered and signposted. If you are ready for a tough climb, take on the Megalo Chorafi Mountain in the middle of the island. And wildlife enthusiasts will love the pine forests.
Top tip: Almost the entire population resides in the port town of Patitiri, so it gets a little crowded in summer.
Take me there: Fly to Skiathos, then take a two-hour ferry ride.
Check in: The Marpunta Resort is the perfect base – it has a range of sports and activities and a beachfront restaurant.
Seven days cost from £1,282pp based on two adults sharing on a B&B basis, departing Gatwick on September 10 (olympicholidays.com).
Naxos for the active
Naxos, above, is a place for the energetic – be it windsurfing or hiking around old farms and villages
This is a place for the energetic – be it windsurfing or hiking around old farms and villages.
Don’t miss: Hora (Naxos town) is a must for its network of alleyways, Venetian mansions and an idiosyncratic Catholic cathedral.
Top tip: The island starts to close down by mid-September.
Take me there: Fly to Mykonos and then take a 40-minute ferry ride.
Check in: The Naxian Collection in Stelida is a mix of minimalist villas and an elegant hotel. A grand pool suite is from £380 a night (naxiancollection.com).
