March 1, 1980 - "And The Beat Goes On" by The Whispers started a five week run at No.1 on the Hot Soul Singles chart. Formed in 1964, Whispers had to wait until 1980 before this became their first Top 20 hit in the UK and US. This remained their biggest hit in the UK but in the US 1987's "Rock Steady" had a better chart placing peaking at No.7 on the Hot 100. The Whispers were at a low point as the '70s ended. Like many soul music acts, the quintet had been put adrift as the disco boom continued to dominate the charts. As the flagship act of manager Dick Griffey's Soul Train Records, they scored hits with "One for the Money," "Living Together (In Sin)," and a tantalizing cover of "Make It With You" by Bread. By the end of the decade, the label had become Solar Records and the roster had expanded to include Shalamar and Dynasty. Most of the label's hits were courtesy of the skills of songwriter/producer Leon F. Sylvers III. Assigned to work with the veteran vocal group, Sylvers played the group "And the Beat Goes On", which he'd co-written with Lakeside member Stephen Shockley and William Shelby. They knew it was a hit but had little belief that it would break their dry spell. The completed track made good use of twin brothers Walter and Wallace Scott's unique vocal interplay and the group's doo wop-honed harmonies.
