Factors Affecting Solar System Price in 2023: A Closer Look - Freyr Energy
Tumblr media
Solar energy is acknowledged as popular choice for both businesses and individuals who reduce their electricity bills and support to greener environment. The day-by-day revolution in solar energy illustrate that solar energy for electricity generation is going to be the future. Determining solar panel price in India is not strait-jacket formula; rather, it necessitates various factors that play essential role in determining the price for installing solar panels. In this article, we are going to explore the factors involved in deciding solar system prices in 2023 and growing landscape of solar power in next decade.
Factors Influencing Solar System Price in 2023 is:
There are several factors which lead to solar panel price variations significantly. It is important to acknowledge the various factors that implicated in determining solar system prices, especially those businesses and individuals who want to install solar panel. Let’s have a look at features that play significant role in influencing solar system prices in 2023:
The declining cost of Solar Photovoltaic Panels:
One of the important factors that make solar systems more affordable and accessible is declining cost of solar pv panels. Increased competition, technological advancement in manufacturing processes, etc. plays crucial role in the downfall of solar panel prices.
The Increasing Efficiency of Solar Panels:
Another factor that casts its shadow on solar system prices is the solar panel efficiency. The efficiency refers to its expertise in transform sunlight into electricity. Panels with higher efficiency generate a copious amount of electricity per square metre, necessitating a smaller number of panels to achieve the desired energy output. As solar panel efficiency continues its upward orientation, the cost per watt drops, providing solar systems more economical.
The Growth of Utility-Scale Solar Projects:
The development of utility-scale solar projects utilizes its gravitational pull on solar system prices. Utility-scale projects entail vast solar installations that generate electricity routinely in huge quantities for the power grid. As the requisite for renewable energy escalate, the utility-scale solar projects are arising. The financial system of scale related to these solar projects can trigger racking systems, encompassing solar panels, reduced component costs, and inverters. Consequently, the consumption in component costs can enhance the overall solar system affordability.
The rise in adoption of Solar Energy by Institutions and Corporations:
The rise in the adoption of solar energy by institutions and corporations assumes an essential role in determination of solar system prices. As more corporations embrace solar power, the demand for the solar panel system and other components are skyrockets. This rapidly increasing in demand for solar can herald economies of scale and bulk acquiring discounts, conferring affordability to solar systems for all buyers.
The rapid growth of the Rooftop Solar Market:
The solar rooftop sector is seeing remarkable expansion, which resulted in solar panel system costs being unsteady. Rooftop solar installations authorize businesses and homeowners to produce their own electricity and lessen their dependence on power grid. The growth of this market has ignited extreme competition among solar panel installers, which cause a downward spiral in prices. On top of that, Net metering policies and government incentives have provided solar rooftop more financially attractive, thereby exerting further impact on solar system prices.
The Emergence of Solar Energy Storage:
The emergence of solar energy storage solutions obtained boost popularity, casting its spell over solar system costs. Solar energy storage empowers the capture and storage of excess electricity produced by solar panels. This stored energy demonstrate indispensable during periods of high electricity or scarce sunlight demand, thus decline reliance on power grid. As technology for solar energy storage advances and becomes more economical, the initial solar system costs may experience a rise, but in long run, it can bestow energy dependence and savings.
The Evolution of Solar Power Systems in the Next Decade:
The future of solar power systems is diversified of probability, affect by an array of factors such as policies, technological advancements, and economic currents. While divining the exact orientation of solar energy’s advancement over next decade is a puzzle, several trends follow our attention:
Adoption in Developing Countries:
Developing countries are aroused to latent solar energy potential as cost-effective solution and sustainable. The rapid solar power growth in these nations is likely to rise up exponentially in upcoming years. The reason behind this surge encloses the reduction in solar systems price, governmental initiatives that champion renewable energy and improved access to financing.

"Cody Two Bears, a member of the Sioux tribe in North Dakota, founded Indigenized Energy, a native-led energy company with a unique mission — installing solar farms for tribal nations in the United States.
This initiative arises from the historical reliance of Native Americans on the U.S. government for power, a paradigm that is gradually shifting.
The spark for Two Bears' vision ignited during the Standing Rock protests in 2016, where he witnessed the arrest of a fellow protester during efforts to prevent the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline on sacred tribal land.
Disturbed by the status quo, Two Bears decided to channel his activism into action and create tangible change.
His company, Indigenized Energy, addresses a critical issue faced by many reservations: poverty and lack of access to basic power.
Reservations are among the poorest communities in the country, and in some, like the Navajo Nation, many homes lack electricity.
Even in regions where the land has been exploited for coal and uranium, residents face obstacles to accessing power.
Renewable energy, specifically solar power, is a beacon of hope for tribes seeking to overcome these challenges.
Not only does it present an environmentally sustainable option, but it has become the most cost-effective form of energy globally, thanks in part to incentives like the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022.
Tribal nations can receive tax subsidies of up to 30% for solar and wind farms, along with grants for electrification, climate resiliency, and energy generation.
And Indigenized Energy is not focused solely on installing solar farms — it also emphasizes community empowerment through education and skill development.
In collaboration with organizations like Red Cloud Renewable, efforts are underway to train Indigenous tribal members for jobs in the renewable energy sector.
The program provides free training to individuals, with a focus on solar installation skills.
Graduates, ranging from late teens to late 50s, receive pre-apprenticeship certification, and the organization is planning to launch additional programs to support graduates with career services such as resume building and interview coaching...
The adoption of solar power by Native communities signifies progress toward sustainable development, cultural preservation, and economic self-determination, contributing to a more equitable and environmentally conscious future.
These initiatives are part of a broader movement toward "energy sovereignty," wherein tribes strive to have control over their own power sources.
This movement represents not only an economic opportunity and a source of jobs for these communities but also a means of reclaiming control over their land and resources, signifying a departure from historical exploitation and an embrace of sustainable practices deeply rooted in Indigenous cultures."

Salt pan mining was heavily reliant on diesel, but a subsidy to encourage use of solar pumps has cut emissions and the cost of mining. Photograph: Ahmad Masood/Reuters
In October, as the monsoon recedes and the flooded salt pans dry out, farmers and their families hop on to trucks and tractors to migrate to the Little Rann of Kutch in Kutch district, Gujarat, where they pitch tarpaulin shelters and begin mining the underground deposits.
An estimated 10,000 families of farmers, known as agariyas in Gujarati, migrate to the marshes from across the state. They start each season by digging wells to pump out brine using diesel pumps; the brine is then poured into shallow, squarish plots carved on the salt pans and left to evaporate under the sun to produce salt crystals. These marshes produce 30% of India’s inland salt, typically table salt.
Life in the salt marshes is uniquely challenging. Drinking water comes not from pipes but tankers, children attend schools inside buses not buildings, and the only avenue to healthcare is weekly mobile vans from the health department. Basic amenities such as an electricity grid and toilets are nonexistent.
Diesel constitutes nearly 65% of the input costs in salt farming, and about 1,800 litres of the fuel is needed to produce 750 tonnes of salt
Introduction of solar panels to the pans has triggered a significant shift in the lives and lifestyles of the impoverished salt workers.
In 2017, the Gujarat government gave solar pumps to salt farmers at nearly 80% subsidy, as part of a larger push to cut emissions and bring down the costs involved in salt production.
Tumblr media
“Solar-powered pumps have reduced the cost of salt farming to one-third of what it was”
With more than 5,500 solar-powered pumps now dotting the region, energy costs have fallen to about 90 rupees to produce one tonne of salt from more than 300 rupees before, according to local campaigners. The agariyas such as Mandviya are no longer as dependent on the capital from traders, which gives them greater negotiating power over salt prices.
Tumblr media
Solar pumps and the financial stability they grant have improved access to health, education and mobility, while also offering freedom to salt farmers from an endless work cycle, campaigners say.
“Steady supply from the solar panels is powering not only pumps but also televisions. Children of salt makers are switching to state-run ‘edutainment’ programmes to make up for the loss of education,” says Bhavna Harchandani, a research scholar at the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar, who has tracked the agariyacommunity as part of her studies. The panels offer rare shade for men to relax during breaks, giving women a few moments of privacy in their makeshift homes, she adds.

According to Bloomberg, China is on track this year to install more solar panels than the entire total the US has installed since the development of solar panels in the 1950's.
Also, China has met its Climate Targets for 2025 two years early. Just astounding progress in renewables development in China. It is the fruit of decades of huge investments in actual green energy. Not bio furnaces or some other capitalist scheme, real progress.
Clearly it's investments are paying off.
Most US States are actively blocking progress in home solar by enacting laws and policies that make it illegal to sell your own excess electricity at market rates, taking away one of the biggest incentives for investing in home solar and artificially depressing home solar sales. A clear market manipulation by both Parties to protect the cash cows of their donor benefactors.
Both Parties are responsible for this policy because both Parties are controlled and co-opted by the very Fossil Fuel companies gobbling public subsidies and belching carbon, that can't actually compete with renewables in a fair market.
Also, an industrial policy would be great. Specifically a green industrial policy.
Any time now...

Biden’s ironically named Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) was supposed to create millions of green jobs and launch the “sustainable power” industry.
Subsidies flowed to support electric vehicles, wind farms, and solar energy.  We have been covering the slowdown in the EV market, and residents of the East Coast are questioning all the promises made by the wind energy companies after the Vineyard Wind blade failure.
Now, it’s time to turn our attention to solar power. SunPower, the company that provides solar panels to many Californian homes in the sunny Coachella Valley area, filed for bankruptcy this week.
It is the latest development in a saga that has seen the company facing numerous serious and seemingly escalating challenges over the past several months, including allegations about executives’ misconduct related to the company’s financial statements and a recent decision that SunPower would no longer offer new solar leases. Days after the latter announcement, Coachella Valley-based Renova Energy, which markets and installs SunPower systems, said it was ending its partnership with SunPower and temporarily pausing operations after not receiving required payments from SunPower. SunPower’s executive chairman wrote in a letter posted on the company’s website on Monday that the company had reached an agreement to sell certain divisions of its business and suggested it was looking for one or more buyers to take on the rest, including the company’s responsibilities to maintain solar systems it has previously sold or leased.
It is important to note that SunPower was the industry’s “darling” to understand the magnitude of this development.
Founded in 1985 by a Stanford professor, SunPower was, for the past two decades, a darling of the solar industry. The company helped build America’s biggest solar plant, called Solar Star and located near Rosamond, California, and has installed solar panels on more than 100,000 homes. The company’s stock price has fluctuated dramatically, peaking during the solar stock frenzy of late 2007. As recently as January 2021, SunPower’s valuation momentarily reached $10 billion, buoyed by the expansion of its residential solar panels program. But since then, the company’s value has cratered — and this year, its situation became particularly dire.
It is also important to note that earlier this month, the bankruptcy of a solar-powered company in South Florida created an array of problems on the South Coast of California. Subcontractors are scrambling to find ways to guarantee payment for work on homes with equipment from the firm.
Meanwhile, homeowners are regretting their misplaced trust in eco-activists and city officials.
The business — Electriq Power Inc. — was putting solar panels and batteries on Santa Barbara rooftops at no expense to homeowners and with the blessings of the cities of Santa Barbara, Goleta, and Carpinteria. But then Electriq filed Chapter 7 on May 3, freezing all its operations. This prompted one of its subcontractors, Axiom 360 of Grover Beach, to place mechanics liens on homes for which it had yet to be paid. This preserves Axiom’s options for full payment of its installation work and is not unusual among contractors. But for homeowners who didn’t expect any financial outlay, it came as a shock, especially as the recording notice lists foreclosure in 90 days among the penalties. “You’re helping the environment. You’re not paying high rates to Southern California Edison,” said homeowner Randy Freed, explaining why he signed on to Electriq’s PoweredUp Goleta program. He was pleased with the savings in the solar array and storage batteries, but then he received the mechanics lien in June. The possibility of foreclosure was unanticipated, Freed said, and he’d relied on the cities’ endorsements. “It’s a great program; we’ve checked them out,” he recalled the cities saying on a postcard he received.
Hot Air's Beege Welborne takes an in-depth look at the cascade of warnings that indicate SunPower and the residential solar market are in serious trouble. She also hits on a point that is true for all green energy schemes: Today’s technology cannot keep up with the promises being made about tomorrow.
The technology side still hasn’t ironed itself out and may never with as saturated as the market is. With interest rates as high as they are and home prices through the roof, no one wants to pay a fortune for something that’s not rock solid. …That “sustainable” growth is only possible once all the artificial supports are knocked away and the technology proves viable and worth the cost once and for all.
Of course, the solar industry isn’t helped by the fact that the cost savings for customers aren’t quite as lavish as originally promised.

Microsoft deal would reopen Three Mile Island nuclear plant to power AI
Pennsylvania’s dormant Three Mile Island nuclear plant would be brought back to life to feed the voracious energy needs of Microsoft under an unprecedented deal announced Friday in which the tech giant would buy 100 percent of its power for 20 years.
The restart of Three Mile Island, the site of the worst nuclear accident in U.S. history, would mark a bold advance in the tech industry’s quest to find enough electric power to support its boom in artificial intelligence. The plant, which Pennsylvanians thought hadclosed for good in 2019 amid financial strain, would come back online by 2028 under the agreement, according toplant owner Constellation Energy.
If approved by regulators, Three Mile Island would provide Microsoft with the energy equivalent it takes to power 800,000 homes, or 835 megawatts. Never before has a U.S. nuclear plant come back into service after being decommissioned, and never before has all of a single commercial nuclear power plant’s output been allocated to a single customer.
But the economics of both the power and computing industries are changing rapidly. Tech companies are scouring the nation for power that is both reliable and helps them meet their pledge to fuel AI development with zero emissions electricity — driving a nuclear power revival.
“The energy industry cannot be the reason China or Russia beats us in AI,” said Joseph Dominguez, chief executive of Constellation. “This plant never should have been allowed to shut down, ... It will produce as much clean energy as all of the renewables [wind and solar] built in Pennsylvania over the last 30 years.”
Follow Climate & environment
The four-year restart plan would cost Constellation about $1.6 billion, he said, and is dependent on federal subsidies in the form of tax breaks earmarked for nuclear power in the 2022 Inflation Recovery Act.
Constellation will also need to clear steep regulatory hurdles, including intensive safety inspections from the federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission, which has never before authorized the reopening of a plant. The deal also raises thorny questions about the federal tax breaks, as the energy from the plant would all be produced for a single private company rather than a utility serving entire communities.
A partial reactor meltdown at Three Mile Island in 1979 sent the nation into a panic and the nuclear industry reeling. The unit that Constellation plans to fire back up sits adjacent to the one that malfunctioned 45 years ago.
Constellation and Microsoft conceived the novel deal to solve a deepening energy problem. The sprawling data centers Microsoft and other digital giants need have become so big and energy-intensive that they are straining existing power supplies across the nation.
Constellation disclosed months ago that it was exploring options for restarting Three Mile Island, which sits along the Susquehanna River. The news was met with mixed reactions. Nuclear safety advocates expressed alarm. But some community leaders welcomed the development, seeing potential to revive an economic anchor in a region beset with financial hardship. A study funded by the Pennsylvania Building & Construction Trades Council says a reopening would create 3,400 jobs at the plant and in businesses serving it and its workers, and generate $3 billion in state and federal taxes.
The tax breaks in the Inflation Recovery Act are crucial to making the deal economically feasible, according to Constellation. They provide a credit for every megawatt hour of nuclear energy produced.
Constellation declined to provide details about its contract with Microsoft or disclose the value of tax credits. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm has said in the past that federal subsidies could cut the cost of bringing a new plant on line by as much as half.
The announcement of the Microsoft deal follows an agreement Amazon reached with Talen Energy to purchase power produced by the financially troubled Susquehanna nuclear plant for a planned data center campus in Pennsylvania. That arrangement is running into snags with regulators, as regional utilities express concern that their ratepayers will be saddled with the bill for the power grid updates needed.
Amazon’s plan also raised concerns among clean-energy advocates that tech companies are shifting from driving the transition to clean energy to elbowing others out of it by claiming such large amounts of available clean electricity for themselves.
Dominguez argues that the Three Mile Island case is an example of how Silicon Valley’s outside-the-box thinking will help stabilize the power grid for everyone. The power from the plant will not go directly to Microsoft facilities but into the overtaxed regional power grid that serves 65 million people across 13 states and the District of Columbia, called the PJM Interconnection.
Nuclear power is considered “clean” because unlike burning natural gas or coal to produce electricity, it does not create greenhouse gas emissions. The plants are expensive to build or restart, and industry still has no long-term solution for spent but highly radioactive uranium fuel rods.
“This agreement is a major milestone in Microsoft’s efforts to help decarbonize the grid in support of our commitment to become carbon negative,” said a statement from Bobby Hollis, vice president of energy at Microsoft.
Dominguez said other ratepayers on the PJM grid will not be expected to shoulder any of the costs, nor will Constellation be seeking special subsidies fromthe state of Pennsylvania.
Constellation has already been doing extensive testing at Three Mile Island. It says most of its components are ready to operate again. “The plant is in extraordinary shape,” Dominguez said.
Three Mile Island is not the only nuclear plant the industry is eager to revive. The owners of a plant in Western Michigan called Palisades are also working to bring that dormant facility back. That project was approved for a $1.5 billion federal loan guarantee. The plant owner, Holtec, says it hopes to feed nuclear energy from Palisades into the region’s power grid by late next year.
The Palisades effort came about at the urging of Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D), as her state struggles to both meet its climate goals and generate adequate energy. The plant was destined for permanent closure when Holtec acquired it in 2022. The company had planned to decommission the facility but changed course after conversations with the governor.
On Wednesday, though, that plan was dealt a setback when federal nuclear regulators disclosed “a large number of steam generator tubes” could be faulty and need further inspection. Holtec said the finding does not alter its plans. But some nuclear safety advocates argue the company’s push to quickly reopen the plant puts the public at risk.
The huge cost and regulatory headaches associated with nuclear power are not deterring the tech industry from betting on it. In a remarkable turn of fortune for an industry that just a few years ago was struggling to stay competitive and focused mostly on closing plants, it now finds itself in expansion mode. Beyond seeking contracts for power from existing plants, tech companies are also bullish on next generation nuclear technologies.
Several are investigating the potential of locating their facilities near small modular nuclear reactors that could feed them power directly. Such technology is in its infancy and has not yet been approved by regulators. That isn’t stopping a company chaired by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates from doubling down on it. The firm, called Terra Power, this year began construction at what it plans to be a small reactor site in site in Wyoming.
Microsoft is also pursuing power from nuclear fusion, a potentially abundant, cheap and clean form of electricity that scientists have been trying to develop for decades — and most say is still a decade or more away from generating electricity. Microsoft has signed a contract to purchase fusion energy from a start-up that claims it can deliver it by 2028.

Solar Panels for Home in Coimbatore: On-Grid Benefits
Tumblr media
As the interest in renewable energy grows, many homeowners in Coimbatore are considering the installation of solar panels. One of the most efficient ways to harness solar panels for home is through an on-grid solar system. This blog will explore the benefits of installing solar panels for homes in Coimbatore, focusing on the advantages of on-grid systems.
What is an On-Grid Solar System?
An on-grid solar system is directly connected to the public electricity grid. This means that during the day, your solar panels generate electricity, which is first used to power your home. Any excess electricity is sent back to the grid, and you can receive credit for this through net metering. At night, or when the solar panels are not generating enough power, your home can draw electricity from the grid.
Advantages of Solar Panels for Home in Coimbatore
Reduced Electricity Bills
Benefit: The primary benefit of installing an on-grid solar system is the significant reduction in your electricity bills. Coimbatore receives ample sunlight throughout the year, which means your solar panels can generate a substantial amount of electricity, offsetting your grid consumption.
Net Metering
Benefit: Net metering allows you to send excess electricity generated by your solar panels back to the grid. This can result in either reduced electricity bills or, in some cases, credits that can be used in future billing cycles.
Low Maintenance
Benefit: On-grid systems are relatively low maintenance compared to off-grid systems. Since there are no batteries involved, there is no need for regular battery maintenance or replacement.
Environmentally Friendly
Benefit: By using solar energy, you are reducing your carbon footprint. Solar panels produce clean, renewable energy that does not contribute to air pollution or greenhouse gas emissions.
Government Subsidies
Benefit: The Indian government offers various subsidies and incentives for solar panel installations. These can significantly reduce the upfront cost of your solar system, making it more affordable for homeowners in Coimbatore.
Disadvantages of On-Grid Solar Systems
No Backup During Power Outages
Drawback: On-grid systems do not provide power during grid outages. This can be a limitation in areas with frequent power cuts unless paired with a battery backup system.
Initial Installation Cost
Drawback: While solar panels can save you money in the long run, the initial installation cost can be high. However, this can be offset by government subsidies and long-term savings on electricity bills.
Solar Panel Costs in Coimbatore
The cost of installing solar panels for homes in Coimbatore varies depending on the size of the system, the type of panels used, and the complexity of the installation. On average, the cost can range between ₹40,000 to ₹70,000 per kW. For a 3 kW system, which is suitable for most homes, the cost would be around ₹1,20,000 to ₹2,10,000.
Long-Term Savings and Return on Investment (ROI)
ROI: With the savings on electricity bills and the potential income from net metering, the ROI for solar panel installation in Coimbatore can be as short as 4 to 6 years. After this period, the electricity generated by your solar panels is essentially free, leading to substantial long-term savings.
Zero Electricity Bills: During the summer months, when air conditioners are running continuously, many homeowners report zero electricity bills thanks to their solar panels. This is especially true for homes with a 3 kW or larger system.
Conclusion
Investing in solar panels for your home in Coimbatore, particularly an on-grid system, is a smart decision. It not only reduces your electricity bills but also contributes to a greener environment. With the added benefits of government subsidies and the potential for net metering, now is the perfect time to make the switch to solar energy.

"Passed in February [2024], a massive subsidy program to help Indian households install rooftop solar panels in their homes and apartments aims to provide 30 gigawatt hours of solar power to the nation’s inventory.
The scheme, called PM-Surya Ghar, will provide free electricity to 10 million homes according to estimates, and the designing of a national portal—a sort of Healthcare.gov for solar panels—will streamline the process of installation and payment.
The program was cooked up because India had fallen woefully behind on its planned installations for rooftop solar. In many parts of the subcontinent, the sun is absolutely brutal and relentless, but by 2022, Indian rooftop solar power generation topped out at 11 gigawatts, which was 29 gigawatts under a national target set a decade ago.
Part of the challenge, Euronews reports, is that approval from various agencies and departments—as many as 21 different signatures in some cases—was needed to place a solar array on your house. Aside from this bureaucratic nightmare, the cost of installation was often higher than $5,000; more than half the average yearly income for a working Indian urbanite.
Under PM-Surya Ghar, subsidies for a 2-kilowatt solar array will cover as much as 60% of the installation costs, falling to 40% for arrays 3 kilowatts or higher. Loans set at around 7% interest rates will help families in need get started. 750 billion Indian rupees, or $9 billion has been set aside for the project.
Even in New Delhi, which can be covered in clouds and smog for days, solar users report saving hundreds during summer time on their electricity costs, with one apartment shaving $700 every month off energy bills.
PM-Surya Ghar is also seen as having the potential to cause a boom in the Indian solar market. Companies no longer have to go running around for planning and permitting requirements, and the government subsidies ensure their customer base can grow beyond the limits of household income."
