On this year, we encourage participation in the form of any fanwork of your choosing. Due to time constraints for many of the habitual participants of the event, we would like to put forward that fanfiction entries this year should be drabbles (between 100 and 1000 words). Nevertheless, each participant is free to create whatever they're inspired to make: you will still be allowed to partake in the event if you break the word count limit.
Due to the time constraints indeed, a proper prompt and poll system was beyond our possibilities this time. That being said, the chosen prompts provide a broad scope of possibilities: you can choose to take any of the prompts associated with the planetary theme assigned for each day, you can work with the planet in question, too: anything is valid within the prompts provided. If you had any particular story or prompt you REALLY wished to explore in Sokkla Saturdays this year? Feel free to find whichever prompt it fits best and build your story around it. Depending on participation levels and interest this year, we may return to the poll format next year.
All this being said, let’s get ready for Sokkla Saturdays!
Please, tag #sokkla saturdays 2024 and/or #sokklasaturdays within the first five tags of your entry. Feel free to message us with links to your entries if we miss them, as some content might not show up even when adequately tagged in Tumblr’s search system. Make sure to tag your entries appropriately if they contain mature content of any nature. We encourage all participants and members of the community to be cordial to others. Please observe this fundamental and critical courtesy so as to create a positive environment for this event.
See you on Sokkla Saturdays!

Sokkla Saturdays - Day 5: Jupiter
Summary:
Azula could have melted through the floor right then. If anyone would have told her a decade ago she would become as good as a puddle when it came to children she would have downright laughed in their faces. Funny how fate twisted that around for her.

Scenes of a Peaceful World: Sokkla Saturdays 2024
Day Seven - Sudden Changes
Rated: M
On FF.net//On AO3
Sokka swallowed dryly, eyes wide. Azula challenged him in numerous ways across their lives, far more than he'd dare count… but she was taking it to a whole new level on that day, and without the faintest awareness of it, too.
"I'm not imagining things, am I? Just look at them!"
Oh, he was looking. He absolutely was looking. Nothing could possibly convince him to tear his eyes off Azula's perfectly exposed chest.
It had started that morning: she had said she felt uncomfortable, and she didn't particularly like the way her clothes had fit her on that day. She asked for his opinion a thousand times, and he reassured her that he found her as breathtaking as ever. In true Azula form, she had disregarded the compliment and obsessed over what was bothering her for most of the day.
Now, the day was out. Night had come. And now he sat at the foot of their bed, his shaft hardening quite effectively as his topless wife squeezed her breasts before his eager eyes, with absolutely no intent of seducing him, yet succeeding at it anyway.
"I swear they weren't this size last night. They weren't yesterday!" Azula huffed: she let go, and they bounced. Sokka suppressed a shiver as best he could… his manhood, however, twitched quite noticeably over the visual stimulation. "I've heard… well, it's obvious, isn't it? Women gain weight over life and that affects all their body parts… maybe my ass is like this too. M-maybe…!"
"Azula, y-you don't have to…!"
She shoved off her bottoms next, rushing to their full body mirror to inspect, wide-eyed, the size of her rear.
"It… doesn't look that big. I think. Not much more than I think it was, anyway," she concluded. "Which makes this… stranger. Doesn't it?"
She glanced at Sokka: his uncomfortable, pleading eyes were accompanied by an awkward smile quickly. Azula sighed, meeting his gaze with uncertainty.
"I'm not saying I'm sick or so, you don't have to worry…"
"You don't look sick to me, but if you do think there's a chance that… w-well, whatever you're feeling isn't normal, you can always ask Katara. Or Song," Sokka said, averting his gaze and closing his eyes: he could say responsible things if he didn't look at her, yes. She didn't need to know her very serious concerns over her body's sudden changes were pushing his basest needs to the forefront. Her peace of mind was the priority here, not that of his dick…
"I don't think it's… abnormal. But I'm not pregnant again, that's for sure," Azula pointed out, hands on her hips, glaring at her chest again. "This isn't the first symptom, I'd have been puking my innards out well before this happened, and I haven't been doing that. So… whatever this is, it isn't pregnancy. I'm certain."
"You've had the tea every day… so it shouldn't be," Sokka said, with a small voice.
"So why?" Azula growled. "Do I need more physical activity? That might really be it. Maybe working out more often would ensure I burn off enough energy and reduce them back to normal…"
"I'm not sure it works like…"
Sokka dared open his eyes again: Azula was cupping one of them again, still with that serious scowl… squeezing, no doubt looking for any anomalies, but finding nothing so far. The urge to offer to look in her stead choked in his throat. This was a cruel, beautiful spectacle, and he was to behave himself and hold back and…
"What do you think, though?" Azula asked, glancing at him. Sokka stiffened. "Are they… different? Bigger?"
Sokka swallowed dryly again: he needed so much water. That the woman he had been sleeping with for as good as twenty years would still produce this effect in him might be something to be grateful for, but right now, he wished he could blind himself to her sex appeal if that would make him a better husband…
"I… don't know for sure," Sokka said, slowly. "But they… look… fuck, they look amazing."
Azula froze. Sokka grimaced, burying his face in his hands.
"I'm sorry but you're driving me crazy here. They're… perfect. Always were. But if they're bigger right now, t-then that just means more perfection, and seeing you touch them like that and show them to me, I…! I'm just a man, Azula. Just a shameful, stupid, perverted man who's looking at perfection and blinded by it… more than I would be by the sun, surely, and… oh, this is too much. Have mercy on me, woman…"
Azula watched him for a moment, eyebrows raised. Sokka didn't dare look at her again, cheeks lit up with his fluster, waiting for her judgment to strike him down.
She stepped closer to him. Wearing nothing but her panties, she should have been anything but intimidating… but this was Azula. There was no chance a woman like her could stop being intimidating.
"The only bright side in all this… was the hope that you'd be pleased with the changes, if there were any."
Sokka tensed up. He jerked his head up, out of his hands, to find Azula towering over him, still with that unreadable expression across her golden eyes.
"W-well…" Sokka chortled. Azula smirked.
"Didn't know you'd be that affected by seeing me hold my own breasts, though. You do realize you're not the only person allowed to touch them?"
"I do, and… I just… didn't expect it to affect me this much either," Sokka said, eyeing her with uncertainty. "But you know you're hot as hell, Azula… and no, don't start, I'm not saying it because of your firebending, alright? Which, yes, is hot too, but still…!"
"If my husband still thinks so highly of me in my forties, why… I really should be grateful for it," Azula smiled. Sokka bit his lip and smiled a little too. "Not missing the old days when we were younger and more energetic, are you?"
"I feel quite energetic right now, I can tell you that much," Sokka admitted. Azula laughed.
"Who'd have thought that sudden changes would wind up proving that, in the end, you and I somehow just… stay the same?" she said, cupping his cheek and raising his head so she could lean over to kiss him.
Sokka responded gladly, letting Azula push him down over their bed: his hands couldn't help but move to her waist, caressing her ribcage, stroking her skin circularly with his thumbs…
But then her lips left his. Her body shifted further, and she smirked playfully at him as she held herself above him: her breasts dangled teasingly right over his wide, hungry eyes.
"I think… I need a more thorough second opinion, if you'd be so kind?" she teased him. Sokka's perverted smile brought a delighted blush to her face. "Now, please be gentle, they might just be more sensitive too…"
"I'll be… I'll be good. Just… get over here."
Azula burst out laughing once he pulled her down over him: he as good as smothered himself in the valley of her breasts, groaning with bliss and relief, his face squeezed between both mounds.
"Not the most orthodox testing method, mind you…" Azula chuckled, hugging him to her chest as they rolled on the mattress.
"Okay, okay. I'll be… professional now," Sokka teased her, hands rising to cup each of them: his wicked smirk already told her exactly what he meant to do…
And the truth was, she was ready for it, entirely.
She had spent most of the day feeling foolishly uncertain of herself. Sokka had never rejected those sorts of changes during pregnancy, but it was rather odd for it to happen without one along the way. Part of her dreaded that she could be imagining growth where there might just be sagging, instead… was she that old already? Was this around the point in life where such a thing would start happening to her?
It would happen eventually, she knew… but with Sokka eagerly devouring her nipples, testing her chest in a most inappropriate yet still quite helpful manner, she allowed herself to believe that, as the reach of old age did start to take its toll on them, the reckless, loving man atop her would never fail to see beauty where she might see flaws, just as he always had. She knew she'd be no better, no different, pertaining him and his own body's changes, should he go through any…
He'd said it many times: marriage was indeed a matter of spending their lives together, of basking in every spark of joy their bond would bring. Every smidge of affection her lover had offered her since the moment they'd started their relationship continued to nourish her, just as it did now… and she hugged him tightly, willfully giving herself to him, heart lightened by the love they shared, a love she had long known not to second-guess… for as many sudden changes as they might face, Sokka always found a way to surprise her even more wonderfully than life ever would.

Prompt Voting for Sokkla Saturdays 2023 begins NOW!
Choose your EIGHT favorite prompts within the list and get ready for the official prompt announcement on August 31st!
To clarify the restriction to eight prompts: on this year's edition of Sokkla Saturdays, there will be eight pre-selected broader thematic prompts chosen by the organizing team. This choice is intended to allow further flexibility in the prompt selection process, as opposed to the previous years. Many highly specific and unique prompts in the past have not received any entries based on their concepts since they did not allow enough room for interpretation and creativity. Therefore, on this year we will only choose 8 prompts in the poll, as there are only 8 Saturdays between October and November in 2023, as opposed to the 9 weeks the event has lasted in previous years.
Alright, jump right in and begin voting before August 31st!
Note: Regarding the prompt suggestion process this time around... please read below the cut:
This event has always been a lot freer than many events in other fandoms or communities. Plenty of events don't even hold open prompt selection processes, the leadership holding the event takes care of choosing every prompt instead. We never wanted to do this with Sokkla Saturdays, but unfortunately, this year's situation has called for more restrictive measures on our part than ever before.
We have a grand total of 90 available prompts to vote for in the poll. As it happens, there were 147 prompts on the document where everyone was welcome to share their ideas for this event.
Whether out of malice or ignorance, it appears that one or two individuals took the open call for prompts as an invitation to add 57 prompts that, upon close inspection, were deemed completely inappropriate to feature in this event. The prompts remain on the document, in case anyone still wishes to see them and confirm their nature. Whether it was a matter of trolling, or of antis attempting to sabotage the event, the organizing team discussed the situation and agreed that these 57 prompts did not represent the kind of community and content we want Sokkla Saturdays to provide.
To make matters clear: NSFW content is allowed in this event, as always has been the case. But this event is also open to all audiences. NSFW content is meant to be OPTIONAL. A large number of the prompts that were eliminated demanded for NSFW content that versed along topics that were frankly alarming and disturbing. Some that weren't disturbing due to NSFW components were still alarming due to the ideas that were being proposed in them, ideas that seemed to have been suggested in ill faith by a foul player to create controversy or sow conflict within the community. There's also the possibility that these prompts were suggested in an immature manner as well, rather than out of mere malice: whatever the case may be, they will not be options available to vote for in the poll linked above.
In regards of NSFW prompts: prompts such as 'intimacy', or 'steam', are deemed appropriate due to the flexibility they provide in terms of possibilities for participants of this event to explore. You could very well write a story about NSFW topics, just as you could write a story about emotional intimacy, or about a steam engine. It's nowhere near as forceful as the numerous, highly inappropriate NSFW-themed prompts that we received this year.
It's worth noting that we do have NSFW-themed prompts within the options of the poll: namely, the ones that did not raise red flags pertaining the nature of what was being proposed, or regarding the potential ill intent with which they were suggested.
But considering this unprecedented, apparent sabotage or simple misuse of the prompt suggestion document, our next Sokkla Saturdays may see the prompt screening becoming much tighter and far more thorough than it was this time, and than it has been over the last years.
Prompts for events are not meant to be a way to coax the entire fandom to write your favorite kinks, or a specific kind of fic that is primarily meant for your personal enjoyment. Prompts are about jogging and triggering creativity in participants, they are meant to be ideas, concepts that bring plot bunnies to mind. Fully writing out a potential story's concept or summary is not a prompt either. While some of the suggestions that worked that way were kept in the poll, that won't be the case next time.
We want to make it clear from this point forward that, in the next iteration of Sokkla Saturdays, prompt selection will be much more strict to avoid any manner of misuse in the prompt suggestion stage, whether caused by those targeting the community for the sake of harming it, by those who find amusement in making the organizing team do extra work to weed out troublemakers, or by those who don't truly understand the nature of fandom events due to being too new to this kind of community. The organizing team has suspicions pertaining the identity of the primary responsible party behind the unacceptable prompts: if confirmed, this individual's participation will be excluded from all Sokkla Saturdays, going forward.
If there are any other questions regarding the exclusion of those 57 prompts, feel free to ask them. For now, vote away and look forward to our next iteration of Sokkla Saturdays!

As Long As We’re Together - Sokkla Saturdays 2024
Day 9 - Power: Deep Feelings, Part 2
Sequel of last week.
FF.net & AO3
Mature Content. The word count took it's course. This needed to be long, so hopefully it's okay. I hope today makes up for the „almosts“ from last week.;)
Last Sokkla Saturday of this year. It's my favorite time of the year and I'm thrilled every time. @sokklasaturdays I want to thank you guys for planning and holding this event. Can't wait for the next one! And thanks to everybody supporting my work and for the nice words. <3
Two days.
Two days have passed since she last saw him and cried in his arms. Since the most painful goodbye she's ever experienced.
The palace felt empty, the garden lonely. Sokka's absence was profoundly felt. Azula missed him fiercely. She felt the missing deep in her bones. They grew into each other’s hearts in such a short amount of time. She wondered if she ever felt warmth before he entered her life. She could barely remember how life had been prior going to Shu Jing and spending time with Sokka.
Dusk arrived and Azula was walking through the palace corridors not even knowing where she was going anymore. Unfocused as she was, she didn't notice the ajar door. It was her study room.
A hand darted out and grabbed her arm to pull her inside the room. Before she could react she came face to face with a guard. Only, this person wasn't a regular guard. The Royal Family Guards didn't have blue eyes. They didn't have a wolf tail.
Eyes wide, Azula wasn't sure if this was a dream or not. Sokka was standing in front of her. The man she madly fell in love with.
Sokka.
"Sokka, you ... what are you ..."
"I came for you." he said smiling and coming closer.
Azula smiled back and threw her arms around him hugging him tightly. He instantly wrapped his arms around her body, holding her close and caressing her long hair with one hand.
She couldn't believe that he actually came. It was unexpected.
"How did you get this?" she asked pulling away and pointing at his guard uniform.
"I know someone in the city." he answered still smiling. "I didn't interact with other guards, it was just to sneak in without getting noticed."
Azula knew her smile must have taken half her face. But she didn't care. She leaned closer and looked up at him.
"I can't believe it Sokka. I ..." she paused, not knowing how to form words. "
"I couldn't do it Azula. I felt lost and alone without you. I can’t just go back to my tribe." Sokka said.
"I love you Azula."
She was a mess. A blushing, teary-eyed, happy mess.
"Where are you staying?" Azula asked.
"The house we used to stay in with my parents and sister when we came here." he said.
“You still remember this city then?” she asked.
“It has been several years since we last visited as you know.” he winked, “But yes, I do remember the city.”
“When did you come?”
“This morning. It took me a little time. I met an old friend here who organized this uniform and helped with the everything else.” Sokka explained.
“I should thank this friend of yours then.” Azula said.
Sokka laughed.
“What’s his name?” she pressed on the word his.
“How are you so sure they‘re a his?” Sokka asked smirking.
Azula suddenly grew uncomfortable.
Sokka laughed and caressed her cheek.
“You have nothing to worry about Azula. He is a he.” He enjoyed her jealousy. It brought something fascinating out of her. It made him want to kiss her until he got lost in her taste.
They stared into each other’s eyes for a while. Taking in the beauty of them, the details.
Azula leaned in more and Sokka kissed her then. Slowly, gently. She replied and their world felt good again.
It was tender and mending. Like a need they didn’t know they craved.
All they wanted was to stay like this and never let go. But they had to. Azula grew aware of footsteps outside in the halls. Someone might come in.
"Sokka." Azula pulled away breathlessly.
"Huh." Sokka replied, out of breath himself.
Azula just wanted to snuggle at him and forget everything else.
"My father's meeting will end anytime now. We can't stay here like this Sokka I'm sorry." she told him sadly.
"I understand." he said smiling sadly. As much as he would like to argue and stay, he wouldn't risk her getting in trouble now when so many people were in the palace for the meeting.
"I'll come tomorrow." she said.
……..
Azula smiled the whole evening. She went to her room, changing into her sleeping robe with her usual ponytail.
The warmth inside her deepened now that Sokka was in this city. She still couldn't believe he came for her. She felt bad for sending him away, it took her so much willpower. But with so many generals and admirals around it would have been risky. Sometimes Azula was summoned too. She wondered if she should have just locked the door to her study room until it was night and met him there again.
A knock on the door startled her out of her thoughts.
"Yes?"
The door opened and a guard came in a rush. With one hand he took off the mask and closed the door with the other.
“Sokka?!”
“Don’t worry, nobody saw me.” he grinned.
When Azula smiled back, Sokka was relieved that she accepted him in her room. Upon her glancing at the door lock, he locked it and walked up to her.
He took one of her bangs into his hand stroking it until his palm rested on her cheek. She leaned in closing her eyes for a moment.
Normally they talked a lot. Joking around leisurely. But right now, they needed the nearness of their bodies. The emotions were so intense that simple words couldn't keep up.
Sokka’s eyes travelled down her body. His gaze was lovely and intense at the same time. Only then did Azula realize that she was in her sleeping robe, with nothing but her undergarment.
“I saw you once like this.” Sokka blurted out, sensing her unease.
“I mean, you were covered with a blanket, so I only saw your ponytail and shoulder.” Sokka blushed now.
He was an idiot wasn’t he? What if she misunderstood now?
“What?” Azula asked clearly confused.
“I… when we had an argument in Piandao’s mansion. I didn’t see you that evening, so I was worried and came to check on you. You were tucked in bed asleep. I couldn’t help and neared the bed and watched you.” Sokka told her.
When Azula didn’t reply he grew nervous.
“I left although I didn’t want to. It was just for a minute.” He said swallowing hard.
“That’s okay Sokka.” she smiled.
“Azula.”
“Yes.”
Their voices so low, if they weren’t standing close, they might have missed it.
“That was when I became sure that I fell in love with you.” Sokka said earnestly.
Breathing felt difficult for Azula.
“I am in love you Azula.” Sokka confessed. “I never want a day without you.”
“Me too.” Azula said. She felt her eyes tearing up. “I love you Sokka.”
Sokka didn’t know how much he needed her to say those words.
They kissed the second time that day. Azula’s hands worked on Sokka’s armor, needing to take it off. He complied, it felt uncomfortable anyway.
The kiss intensified all tongues and desperation. Azula fisted his shirt and Sokka’s hands moved up and down her back.
But she needed more. She wanted him to rip away her robe. She wanted his shirt gone so that they could feel each other’s skin.
Azula moaned into the kiss and reached to take off Sokka’s shirt. He understood her needs. When he came to her room, he didn’t intend to take things far. He just needed to be in her presence, no matter what they were doing or not doing. This was unplanned, but his body reacted. Azula’s moan took things in another direction. He wanted to take off her robe the way she took off shirt, but he needed to make sure that was really what she wanted.
Their hands became desperate for more, when Azula touched his bare chest and Sokka’s went to her sides and then lower.
“Azula.” Sokka tried to say in between heated kisses.
It took him all the strength he had to stop kissing her. He pulled away to look into her eyes. A hand rising up to her cheek.
“Azula, even though I can hardly wait, are you sure you want this?” he asked so gently, Azula might have cried then and there.
“We’ve got time. We can wait. I can wait until you are readier or until we engage or marry.”
Azula swallowed hard. Not only was it exciting for him to be patient, but the indirect way he confirmed this was to last forever, and that he is committed was the world for her.
If it had been somebody else, she would never be sure. But she was sure of Sokka. From the first moment she realized she was falling in love with him, she was sure it would be him or nobody. Just the same as it was for him. For Sokka, it was Azula or no one. And only for her he would go this far.
“I am sure Sokka. I want this. I want you to make me yours and for you to be mine forever.” Azula said.
“I am already yours Azula.” he confessed.
Sokka carried her to the bed, bridal side. Azula pulled him over her instantly and joined their lips again. It felt too good. The wetness of their mouths. His weight atop her body, his manly scent.
But it was going to feel even better. Sokka kissed her jawline and went to her neck, then her cleavage. He always kissed first and then let his tongue travel the spot gently. His hands played with the ribbon of her robe until it loosened. Azula thought her heart was about to burst out of her chest. When he was done taking off her robe, he smiled sweetly, as she started breathing heavily.
Unbeknownst to her, Sokka wasn’t having an easy time. Love, lust, passion and affection all mixed to together.
“You are beautiful.” he managed to whisper. And took to caressing and kissing her body softly. Meanwhile Azula still tried to breathe.
Her underwear was gone and Sokka gifted her with the first pleasure that night. With her being a moaning mess, grabbing his now undone hair and her pillow. She bit her hand to keep her voice at bay. Thankfully, the rooms in the palace lay at good distances from each other.
Even after that, Sokka made sure if Azula wanted to keep going or not. He didn’t need to ask. Azula wanted this. She wanted him. She wanted him since Shu Jing. How often did she dream of his strong arms around her. To feel his breath on her skin.
Sokka‘s clothes were gone and when he climbed atop her again, he took the blanket behind his back and covered up as if trying to hide themselves and their mutual pleasure from the rest of the world.
Azula clawed at his back, he held her on her hip and his other hand fisted the bedsheet as love and lust became one. After watching her at the start to see how she reacted, he buried his face into her neck next, kissing her occasionally. Azula‘s mouth pressed to his shoulder.
Sokka was so gentle, yet so intense with everything he did. It felt magical. Kisses, moans, groans, and names were exchanged until there was tight hugging when they reached their peaks. First Azula. Sokka kissed her reassuringly while she came. Then it was his turn, and he buried his face into her neck again, trying to keep his groan as low as possible. Which was yet another pleasure for Azula.
Azula’s trembling slowed down, when Sokka’s started. She ran her hand up and down his back and arms. Gentle kisses made them both calm down. They lay side by side after Sokka gently pulled out. His hands were around her, caressing her back and she caressed his lips with her thumb. Smiles on their faces.
He didn’t let go of her as they cuddled the night away.

Northern Skies & Airport Lights
For the winter prompt of @sokklasaturdays
Summary: Azula and Sokka meet at an airport after their flights get delayed due to winter weather.
Azula watches plane after plane take off through the lightly frosted window. None of them are hers. She groans. Three hours and counting. Three hours and counting when she should have already boarded and been well on her way. Instead she is here with her carry on bags leaning against her chair eating a cup over overpriced, albeit decently tasty, airport yogurt.
She had plans for the day, a trip to Äkäslompolo Lake and a taste of what it entails; mostly the sauna and a daring dip into one of the ice holes. She has never gone ice swimming, and never wanted to. Not until TyLee had talked her into it. Frankly she had planned on going somewhere warm, somewhere like Dubai or Maui or maybe Toamasina. Some random lake in the Finnish Laplands was not on her list. But TyLee had begged and begged until Azula had caved. And now, several hours into her canceled flight catastrophe, she is desperate to get to Finland.
The prospect is exciting, an adventure ready to be taken.
She finds herself mourning the missed opportunities. One look at the clock tells her that she won’t be getting to Rovaniemi with enough time to make the four hour drive to Äkäslompolo. Be it via bus or a rented vehicle, odds are she will only have enough time to unpack and then attempt to sleep in spite of the day’s stressors.
And that’s if she is able to get there at all. All signs are pointing at a night in this airport in Kazakhstan.
She should have just went at the same time as TyLee and Mai but she just had to stay back a day and get ahead on her term paper. Not that she really needed to, she could hammer that out with no problem, she just didn’t want to have to worry about that while she was supposed to be enjoying her winter break.
She sighs and leans her head back, staring at the steady fluorescent lights. Her phone buzzes in her pocket, probably TyLee asking for her hourly update. She fishes around her pocket and finds the phone. Two messages flash across the screen; ‘Did they get you a new flight yet?’ From Tylee. And one from Zuko, ‘I told you to come with us but nOooOoo, you had to get a head start on your head start first.’
She rolls her eyes. And informs TyLee that all flights are still suspended until the weather clears. And so she is stranded here listening to crying babies and griping middle aged women that she has half the mind to join in their mission to get compensation from the airlines.
Instead she gives TyLee her update and fishes around her carry on bag for one of several novels. Zuko can make what he will of her silence. But it is terribly hard to read with that woman with the bob screeching about how, “it’s ChristMAS! How can you keep all of us stranded here on Christmas!?” Nevermind that it is only the 17th of December. The woman is lucky that she gets that gaudy, flashy Christmas tree in the corner.
She hears the thump of buttcheeks on the seat next to her and suppresses a groan—there are at least twenty other seats that this dolt could occupy and he has decided to place his buttocks here. She should have just put her bags on that seat. She has her sense of politeness to blame.
The young man waves. He looks to be about her age with a scruffy little goatee and a floppy dark blue beanie. Baggy gray pants and a baggier blue hoodie complete an extremely leisurely, comfortable look. One that leaves her jealous considering that she will be spending the night in her somewhat tight dress pants and her red and ruffled satin blouse. She can take her belt and some of the jewelry off and let her hair down but that still wouldn’t be nearly as relaxing as what he is wearing. “Hey so, you were on the delayed flight too?”
It is a stupid question. Everyone waiting in this lobby was on one of the many flights that couldn’t take off. “I was, yes. I would probably be in Finland now if not for this emergency weather related stop.”
“Where are you coming from?”
“Japan.” She answers plainly before specifying, “Kyoto.”
“That’s a long flight. Like ten hours right? There would have been a layover anyways.”
She has to admire his flippant, nonchalance. “Yes, but there wouldn’t have been a wait as long as this.” Azula replies stiffly. “I am going to miss my day trip to Äkäslompolo Lake.” She folds her arms across her chest. “My stupid brother is probably having the time of his life in the sauna right now…”
The man nods. “I’m coming from Deering, Alaska so I’m kinda used to this whole blizzard thing.” He rubs the back of his head. “I was supposed to be heading to Finland as well but there was some type of computer error and the wrong flight was booked. Suddenly I’m on my way to Laos.”
“Laos! That’s not even close to Finland. That is exactly incorrect. Are you certain that it was a computer error and not a moron wasn’t paying attention to what he was clicking error?”
He rubs the back of his head again and gives her a sheepish smile as his cheeks grow pink. “Yeah, it could have been that. My mom or sister usually book the flights.” He laughs but there is a flicker of hurt in his eyes that leads Azula to speculate that there might be some story there. “Imagine my surprise when the pilot announced our destination. I’m kind of glad that we made this stop. I was able to book the right flight this time around.”
She should just let the conversation conclude right here but some deeper part of her hopes that conversing with this stranger might take the edge out of her agitation. She clears her throat. “So…what part of Finland are you heading to?”
“I’m meeting my dad and sister in Rovaniemi to celebrate what would have been my mom’s 49th birthday. We lost her two years ago. She was fighting lupus and there were some complications at her last hospital stay.” He swallows. “Sorry, that’s a little dark to just unload on a stranger.”
Azula shrugs, “when I was fourteen they put me in an institution. My family was a disaster.”
“Was? Hopefully that means that things are better now?”
“They’re trying to be.”
He nods.
“Why aren’t you with your father and sister?”
“I’ve been away at college so I didn’t go with my dad and sister when they went to Canada to visit my Gran Gran—I’ll have to pay her a visit too, spring break probably—so I’m meeting them in Finland and then we’re all going to fly back home together.”
“If you booked the right flight, you will.” Azula quirks a brow. To her surprise, the man meets her dry humor with a somewhat booming laugh. “You’re not going to get offended?”
“It was just a joke.” His smile doesn’t fade. “It was a joke right? You’re laughing with me not at me?”
“I could be. Or maybe I’m just a mean person.”
“Hmm, I don’t think so. I like you.”
“You just met me.”
“I make friends easily.” He shrugs. “I mean we’re traveling to the same destination and we’ll be sitting next to each other on the new flight.” She follows his eyes to the new plane ticket that she had forgotten to slip back into her pocket. “That has to be a sign of something, right?”
“Except that you live in Alaska and I live in Kyoto. That’s not exactly within walking distance.”
“We have phones, the internet, video chat!” He declares. “And if you’re old fashioned you can send me a letter.”
“I suppose that, that can be arranged.” She opens her mouth to speak again but finds herself cut off.
“Excuse me.” He begins. “As an apology for the inconvenience of the delay, the airport is offering a free meal to all of our stranded passengers. We are offering beshbarmak, syrne, sopra, and koktal.”
“I will have the syrne, thank you.” Azula replies.
“I don’t know what any of that is.” the young man confesses. Azula listens to the other man summarize each dish.
“Hmm I think that I’ll try some beshbarmak.”
The other man jots the order down. “Your order numbers are 32 and 33. We will have them ready shortly.”
“My name is Sokka by the way.” He introduces himself and holds out his hand.
Somewhat hesitantly, she takes it. “Azula.
He grins. “It’s nice to meet you, Azula!”
She nods. If nothing else, she supposes that she might get a friend out of this. She could use more friends. She supposes that she wouldn’t mind making semi-regular trips to Alaska every now and again if the two of them have a particularly remarkable time together in what little of it that they have. “What hotel are you staying at? Perhaps if you are nice to me I can get you and your family a reservation for one of those glass igloos.”
Sokka’s face brightens, “for real!?”
Azula nods. “But you have to impress me. You have a few hours to do so.”
“My family is going to be staying in a little cabin but it would be nice to stay at one of those igloos for at least one night.” He muses to himself. “Alright, deal! You’re going to have the best trapped-at-an-airport of your life.”
“I hope that this will be my only ‘trapped-at-an-airport.’” She rolls her eyes. But she cant say that she is completely miserable anymore. There’s something about this Sokka. He’s got a good sense of humor and a way of making her goal of being less cynical seem possible to achieve.

Scenes of a Peaceful World: Sokkla Saturdays 2024
Day Six - Discipline
Rated: T
On FF.net//On AO3
The Preservers were a unique faction within the White Lotus. The group had been built, by Sokka's express demands, all training overseen by him, so that they could see to the protection of a unique location in their world.
The hardest part of such an endeavor, of course, was taking his leave from his family occasionally in order to see this enterprise succeed. If asked, of course, Sokka would always claim that the average period of time he could endure without them was five minutes, but where the world's progress and stability were concerned, both he and Azula were ready to make whatever sacrifices were necessary.
Now, the world reaped the benefits of such sacrifices… of the success of a venture many would have considered too dangerous, too worrisome to be carried out at all. Humanity could not be trusted with this kind of responsibility…
Truthfully, Sokka agreed with that notion: thus, Sokka ensured to set all kinds of boundaries and limitations around any visitors who sought to enter Wan Shi Tong's Library.
"It's amazing that this is even possible…" Aang laughed, standing in the grand, golden halls of the library, eyes glancing over the Preservers, standing guard by the Library's entrance and its main halls. Katara smiled, looping an arm around his. "But humans and spirits are actually working together."
"I might just be crazy, but… it almost sounds like there's greater balance between our nations, and worlds, than there ever was," Katara said. Aang smiled and nodded.
"It's not effortless… but the hard work is worth it. We can teach people better… show them the right path," he said, with a proud smile.
Wan Shi Tong had been persuaded to trust humanity one more time: the grand building rose out of the desert anew. The grand doors had spread open once again. Even now, however, there were limitations to the spirit's leniency: he still probed and tested newcomers, and whoever failed to earn his approval, whoever answered his questions poorly, would have to settle for waiting for another visitor to make a copy of whatever books they wanted to check or borrow.
It could be a complicated system, but one that worked fairly well: Sokka had come up with many of its solutions, including the rather obvious one of crafting safekeeping copies for every tome, for Wan Shi Tong's reassurance. The owl spirit seemed pleased with his support and cooperation… enough to allow what Sokka had never imagined he would, once he asked it of him:
A large family, either astride or walking beside dragons, crossed the Library's golden gates on the morning when the Preservers began serving in the Library.
"Wow… wow!" Shun gasped.
"This is… it's a miracle!" Rei gasped, tears in her eyes as she covered her mouth with her hands.
"Where's the owl?" Yuuna pouted.
"So many books…!" Hotaru gasped. "N-no one would be able to read them all!"
"Fortunately, Wan Shi Tong's helpers will be around to ensure you find the ones you're interested in," Azula smiled, clapping her daughter's shoulder. "Now, then… keep your dragons in check. I'm afraid that when he turns up, they'll…"
On cue, all the dragons tensed up: a dark presence, lower down the hallway, caused Yuuna's nervous dragon to squeal, jolting back with the child riding on his back.
"Hey, hey…!" Sokka clasped the dragon's reins, ensuring he wouldn't topple backwards. "No need to worry. He's not going to dissect any of us: he promised."
"It's illegal," Yuuna said, firmly. "No one can dissect a dragon."
"Yeah, I'm sure Wan Shi Tong would feel bound by that law… right?" Sokka said, turning around with an awkward smile: the owl approached gloomily, eyeing their family with an unreadable expression. Xin Long, while also tense, appeared to reassure Hotaru and Shun's dragons, though they still shivered while hiding behind him.
"I see you have arrived. The Avatar and the Preservers said you would be here today, Sokka… and you brought your family, indeed."
"Hey there," Sokka smiled, waving at Wan Shi Tong. "Guess introductions are in…!"
"No need. I know who they are," Wan Shi Tong stated. "Rei, the eldest, a scholar. You are welcome to browse my collection."
"I… I am?" Rei gasped: Azula smiled as her daughter shivered with excitement. "Y-you'd let me…?"
"Provided you do not stay until after the doors close. Our service hours are much stricter nowadays," Wan Shi Tong declared.
Rei couldn't contain her excitement, hugging Azula eagerly at the thought of examining countless books she'd had no access to before. Wan Shi Tong turned to the next child, though:
"Hotaru. You may find our collection on firebending and swordsmanship to your liking… though I suspect you would prefer to read fantasy books, today."
"I…! W-well… maybe a few. I can… I can study and have fun, right?" she said, looking at her mother expectantly. Azula smiled and nodded.
"You're free to do as you wish, provided you follow the rules," Azula assured her.
"Shun. You may browse the firebending section with your sister," Wan Shi Tong continued: the boy blushed upon being addressed, shrinking in place. "It has expanded thanks to your parents' contributions. Ensure to thank them for it."
"I-I will. I… thank you," Shun said, bowing his head towards the owl.
"Yuuna… zoology section: third floor, fifth wing."
"Good."
The child didn't bother waiting to check with her parents: she spurred her dragon to take flight, and the whole family gasped as they took off through the floors of the Library, right towards her favorite subjects.
"Sorry about…! Oh, hell," Sokka groaned.
"I'll keep an eye on her," Rei laughed, clapping Sokka's shoulder before setting out to the third floor, too.
The children scattered, with Hotaru and Shun lingering not too far from the entrance, meeting up with Aang and Katara, while Rei chased down the restless Yuuna. Wan Shi Tong watched the two kids, though it seemed his attention lingered on their dragons.
"You fulfilled your many vows to me, in your last visit," he said, turning his head towards Azula. "I feared I shouldn't have risked trusting any of your nation anew… but I took a gamble with you, and you did not disappoint. Where I have seen much of the worst of humanity… I appear to have discovered the best of it, through the two of you."
"That might be too flattering," Azula smirked. "We're hardly upstanding in every sense…"
"Indeed. Ensure not to sully my Library with improper acts this time."
"H-hey!" Sokka squeaked. "We weren't doing anything that bad! I mean, well…!"
"He walked in on us getting slightly too comfortable in his planetarium room, Sokka: he's not going to forget that," Azula said, with a dry grin.
"Indeed," Wan Shi Tong confirmed. Sokka's cheeks flushed. "That being said, you have been rather successful across the years, building a family, bringing back the dragons, as you promised… you reclaimed peace in a world that seemed beyond all hope. While I remain vigilant, and the Preservers will continue to keep tabs on all who may enter the Library's premises, I find myself at new ease with your kind. History shall always remember what humanity owes to the both of you. I will make certain to make records of it."
"Thank you," Azula bowed her head. "And… for letting my family browse your collection. We told them what a great honor you had bestowed upon us by allowing this. I know they're hardly the most disciplined children…"
"We'll keep an eye on them anyway," Sokka smiled reassuringly. "Thanks, Wan Shi Tong!"
"It is I who thanks you. Truly."
Wan Shi Tong bowed towards them, stunning Azula with the gesture: he spread his wings after, taking flight across his Library anew.
The place truly was different compared to Azula's last visit: the whole place appeared brightened with knowledge, with renewal, with the promises fulfilled between the regal couple and the ancient spirit.
"So… what do you think?" Sokka smiled, throwing an arm around Azula's shoulders. Xin Long shook his head before pressing it against Sokka's chest, startling him. "H-hey! He's gone, no need to be scared anymore…"
"He's thanking you," Azula smiled, reaching over to stroke her dragon's fur. "For everything you've done for this place… and, of course, for successfully fending off the big owl, too."
"He'll never stop being unnerved by him, I'm sure," Sokka chuckled, hugging both Azula and Xin Long with each arm. "So… what section do you guys want to start with?"
"How about we find out if anyone has written stories about us yet?" Azula smirked. Sokka snorted. "I'm curious! There's bound to be so many outlandish tales about how on earth you and I wound up together…"
"I'm sure there's a lot of sordid, raunchy ones too…"
"Eh, well. Either we've already done those things, or it'll serve as useful research for the future, right?"
Sokka snorted and cackled: Azula's mischief never failed to delight him.
They took off together, meaning to explore the place on their terms, to enjoy themselves, keeping tabs on their kids while under the watchful supervision of the Preservers, who greeted Sokka respectfully: humanity had succeeded at reconnecting with its most ancient valuable knowledge, and they had finally learned the wisdom, as well as the discipline, to honor the vows that had finally built true peace between the imposing owl and humanity at large.
