Sohei Nishino New Works at Michael Hoppen Gallery:
Sohei Nishino combines photography, collage, cartography and psychogeography to create large prints of urban landscapes. Drawing inspiration from the 18th century Japanese mapmaker, Ino Tadataka, his prints re-imagine the cities he has visited. To build his Diorama Maps, Nishino walks a city's streets for an average of three months, exploring many vantage points and gathers hundreds of rolls of exposed film. He then painstakingly prints the photographs by hand and compiles them to form the tableaux he will use as the basis for his limited edition prints.

After researching his chosen city, Nishino spends up to two months walking and photographing the urban environment, capturing thousands of images of streets, alleys, corners, and vistas from every angle. Sohei Nishino, 'Diorama Map`s
~The mysterious magnetism I have towards maps drew me to the work of the Japenese artist, Sohei Nishino.
~The journey begins with Nishino cruising around his chosen city clone for 6 weeks. Honing in on the individual architecture of each urban landscape, he'll take thousands of shots from all angles before taking a step back to create his collage.
~Up to 2.4m by 1.8m in scale, each map is highly detailed and diverse. A microcosm of the life and energy of the city, buildings loom amid the disjointed and disorientated terrain. The individual intricacies of each map express the city through his own personal perspective and memory of his time there.
~Such subjective experiences of cities are perhaps lost in today's map reliant age. Maybe we should look beyond our phone and allow ourselves to be vulnerable to fall into the twists and turns of a city, with nothing but a camera and a compass in toe...!
