In March 2007, Googleâs then senior executive in charge of acquisitions, David Drummond, emailed the companyâs board of directors a case for buying DoubleClick. It was an obscure software developer that helped websites sell ads. But it had about 60 percent market share and could accelerate Googleâs growth while keeping rivals at bay. A âMicrosoft-owned DoubleClick represents a major competitive threat,â court papers show Drummond writing.
Three weeks later, on Friday the 13th, Google announced the acquisition of DoubleClick for $3.1 billion. The US Department of Justice and 17 states including California and Colorado now allege that the day marked the beginning of Googleâs unchecked dominance in online adsïżœïżœand all the trouble that comes with it.
The government contends that controlling DoubleClick enabled Google to corner websites into doing business with its other services. That has resulted in Google allegedly monopolizing three big links of a vital digital advertising supply chain, which funnels over $12 billion in annual revenue to websites and apps in the US alone.
Itâs a big amount. But a government expert estimates in court filings that if Google were not allegedly destroying its competition illegally, those publishers would be receiving up to an additional hundreds of millions of dollars each year. Starved of that potential funding, âpublishers are pushed to put more ads on their websites, to put more content behind costly paywalls, or to cease business altogether,â the government alleges. It all adds up to a subpar experience on the web for consumers, Colorado attorney general Phil Weiser says.
âGoogle is able to extract hiked-up costs, and those are passed on to consumers,â he alleges. âThe overall outcome we want is for consumers to have more access to content supported by advertising revenue and for people who are seeking advertising not to have to pay inflated costs.â
Google disputes the accusations.
Starting today, both sidesâ arguments will be put to the test in whatâs expected to be a weekslong trial before US district judge Leonie Brinkema in Alexandria, Virginia. The government wants her to find that Google has violated federal antitrust law and then issue orders that restore competition. In a best-case scenario, according to several Google critics and experts in online ads who spoke with WIRED, internet users could find themselves more pleasantly informed and entertained.
It could take years for the ad market to shake out, says Adam Heimlich, a longtime digital ad executive whoâs extensively researched Google. But over time, fresh competition could lower supply chain fees and increase innovation. That would drive âbetter monetization of websites and better quality of websites,â says Heimlich, who now runs AI software developer Chalice Custom Algorithms.
Tim Vanderhook, CEO of ad-buying software developer Viant Technology, which both competes and partners with Google, believes that consumers would encounter a greater variety of ads, fewer creepy ads, and pages less cluttered with ads. âA substantially improved browsing experience,â he says.
Of course, all depends on the outcome of the case. Over the past year, Google lost its two other antitrust trialsâconcerning illegal search and mobile app store monopolies. Though the verdicts are under appeal, theyâve made the companyâs critics optimistic about the ad tech trial.
Google argues that it faces fierce competition from Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, and others. It further contends that customers benefited from each of the acquisitions, contracts, and features that the government is challenging. âGoogle has designed a set of products that work efficiently with each other and attract a valuable customer base,â the companyâs attorneys wrote in a 359-page rebuttal.
For years, Google publicly has maintained that its ad tech projects wouldnât harm clients or competition. âWe will be able to help publishers and advertisers generate more revenue, which will fuel the creation of even more rich and diverse content on the internet,â Drummond testified in 2007 to US senators concerned about the DoubleClick dealâs impact on competition and privacy. US antitrust regulators at the time cleared the purchase. But at least one of them, in hindsight, has said he should have blocked it.
Deep Control
The Justice Department alleges that acquiring DoubleClick gave Google âa pool of captive publishers that now had fewer alternatives and faced substantial switching costs associated with changing to another publisher ad server.â The global market share of Googleâs tool for publishers is now 91 percent, according to court papers. The company holds similar control over ad exchanges that broker deals (around 70 percent) and tools used by advertisers (85 percent), the court filings say.
Googleâs dominance, the government argues, has âimpaired the ability of publishers and advertisers to choose the ad tech tools they would prefer to use and diminished the number and quality of viable options available to them.â
The government alleges that Google staff spoke internally about how they have been earning an unfair portion of what advertisers spend on advertising, to the tune of over a third of every $1 spent in some cases.
Some of Googleâs competitors want the tech giant to be broken up into multiple independent companies, so each of its advertising services competes on its own merits without the benefit of one pumping up another. The rivals also support rules that would bar Google from preferencing its own services. âWhat all in the industry are looking for is fair competition,â Viantâs Vanderhook says.
If Google ad tech alternatives win more business, not everyone is so sure that the users will notice a difference. âWeâre talking about moving from the NYSE to Nasdaq,â Ari Paparo, a former DoubleClick and Google executive who now runs the media company Marketecture, tells WIRED. The technology behind the scenes may shift, but the experience for investorsâor in this case, internet surfersâdoesnât.
Some advertising experts predict that if Google is broken up, usersâ experiences would get even worse. Andrey Meshkov, chief technology officer of ad-block developer AdGuard, expects increasingly invasive tracking as competition intensifies. Products also may cost more because companies need to not only hire additional help to run ads but also buy more ads to achieve the same goals. âSo the ad clutter is going to get worse,â Beth Egan, an ad executive turned Syracuse University associate professor, told reporters in a recent call arranged by a Google-funded advocacy group.
But Dina Srinivasan, a former ad executive who as an antitrust scholar wrote a Stanford Technology Law Review paper on Googleâs dominance, says advertisers would end up paying lower fees, and the savings would be passed on to their customers. That future would mark an end to the spell Google allegedly cast with its DoubleClick deal. And it could happen even if Google wins in Virginia. A trial in a similar lawsuit filed by Texas, 15 other states, and Puerto Rico is scheduled for March.

Hi I've been meaning to ask, synthv/vsynth is like vocaloid roght?
Yes, it is! But Vsynth and Synth V are two different things.
If you're familiar with Vocaloid, then Synthesizer V (sometimes shortened to Synth V or SVS) is software similar to that. You input notes and lyrics and tune everything so the little robot singer sings.
Vsynth (short for virtual synthesizer or vocal synthesizer) is the catch-all term for these types of software, and the vsynth community uses it to refer to these programs, because there's a lot of them! Since the rise and popularity of Vocaloid, there's been a lot of competitors that have popped up in recent years, and they're all from different companies, so we can't refer to all of them as just Vocaloid (just like how we can't refer to every vsinger out there as Hatsune Miku - also fun fact! Miku hasn't been a Vocaloid in YEARS PIAPRO TOOK HER)
Here's a crash course:
VOCALOID is a vocal synth software by YAMAHA. It's the most popular one out there but sadly, it's fallen behind lately. It's not the thing that sings, it's the thing that makes the little singbots sing. It's the engine. Most of Vocaloid's voicebanks are provided by other companies - Hatsune Miku, Kagamine Rin and Len, and Megurine Luka are from Crypton (and they yoinked them back); Kaito and Meiko are native from Yamaha, Gumi is from Internet Co, etc, etc. You get it. The old versions of Vocaloid have been discontinued and are stupid hard to find. Their latest release is V6.
PIAPRO STUDIO is the engine Miku and the other Cryptonloids are now on.
CEVIO is another vsynth software out there. If you remember IA (you know, Miss KagePro herself?), she was pulled out of Vocaloid and moved to Cevio, and her sister ONE was released there too. CEVIO has come a long way since the IA days. We got shit like ROSE and POPY now.
youtube
ACE STUDIO is also another vsynth engine. I've never used it myself, but I know people who have. IIRC they're planning to use a subscription model (most software including Vocaloid are one-time purchases - you get the engine and the vb separately but you only have to get them once), so you get the engine and the voices but you pay a monthly fee. The English UI is still in development but there are community-made guides out there for those who want to use it. It's still in beta I think so you can test it out. It is SO GOOD.

And then there's SYNTHESIZER V STUDIO (which I personally, along with most of the community, think is THEE leading vsynth program currently). You still have to get the engine and vbs separately for this one but there's a Synth V Basic which is free (it just doesn't have a couple of features like crosslang, scripts, etc). Vocaloid Xingchen (Stardust) was moved here, and LORD. Listen to her
youtube
Synth V also has the most English vbs amongst all modern vsynths, I think, and the Pro version has crosslang so the vbs can sing in English, Chinese, Japanese (or another language if you get a dictionary - the community has made a lot of them and they've got them up on github). And they all sound FANTASTIC

Anyway, isn't it funky how far we've come since the first Vsynth sang Bicycle Built For Two?! :D
#vocaloid#synth v#VOCALOID is a rabbit hole man and ive been here for a decade get me out please#ANYWAY yamaha didnt take care of Vocaloid despite how successful it was so a couple of vb providers jumped ship and now#we got all these programs curbstomping vocaloid#like hello ASTERIAN????? Explanation about recent server issues on Ikesen JP
Details from the in-game announcement made today. Just some details for anyone who wants an explanation/to know what the next steps are.
Also a big disclaimer that I am not a tech person, so if I have gotten something drastically wrong about server migrations and connectivity issues, please do correct me! I'm just curious about this kind of stuff.
On 18th January, a long maintenance was held in order to facilitate a server migration, i.e., moving data from an older server to a new server. According to the announcement, this server migration was done as Ikesen has been operating for 8 years now, and Cybird wants to ensure that they can continue to provide service for a long time to come.
Server migrations are done every so often in tech, for a variety of reasons: in order to improve security or performance, because equipment is approaching the end of its lifecycle, to keep up with improvements in software/hardware, etc.
(You may want to keep in mind that last year, Ikesen JP suffered equipment damage to its servers which caused the game to be inaccessible for around 1 month; server repair fees appeared to be a relatively large budget item over the course of last year)
There are programs that can facilitate the process of a server migration. Due to a change in programs associated with the server migration, various bugs occurred. Among them were:
Stamina being set to 0 and not increasing over time
People unable to set their transfer ID passwords
Unable to greet friends
People's own avatars and the avatars of other people randomly missing body parts (hair, eyes, mouths, mostly)
The ads to get an extra chapter ticket not appearing
Etc
Specifically with regards to Ieyasu's birthday story event: Post-migration, they ran a load test. Basically, they tested the game to see how much pressure it could take, trying their best to simulate what it would be like for a bunch of people to log in and play at once. The game initially passed their tests. However, traffic was higher than they had expected for Ieyasu's event, causing the server to exceed its capacity and thus preventing people from accessing the game.
(Normally, if you're having trouble connecting, it is suggested to wait a little bit and try again as you may be trying to log in during a high traffic moment. That is a common occurrence and would not result in a failure of the server; the load was just exceptionally high in this case)
As for their steps going forward:
The main cause of the issue has been identified when it comes to story events, thus there should no longer be errors during any story events going forward
Collection events are handled differently than story events on the back end. Thus, what may cause an issue with collection events is different from what may cause an issue with story events. Therefore, while collection events are ongoing, Cybird will continuously monitor the server performance. In the event that the server begins to experience problems, this should mean that they are able to respond immediately to resolve the issue.
Notes on compensation and what is to be done about other events:
Overall compensation for everything since the start of this mess about 4 days ago will be: 21 parfaits, 15 chapter tickets, 8 castle storage, 8 closet storage, 10k gold.
Ieyasu's birthday event will be restarted at some point in the future
The collection event which was originally scheduled to begin on January 25 will continue to be postponed. More info will be released at a later date when Cybird is more confident in being able to run collection events.

No, but seriously: the reality of capitalism means that Internet Of Things devices are always going to either be a security risk or suck.
Consider: the company has some specific task they want their device to do â monitor your aquariumâs temperature, or control your HVAC, or turn your lights on and off. The task is well-defined in advance, so they can build a device which can handle that task exactly. There is not going to be a future need for the single device you bought to do other things, because it is understood to be built and sold for a specific purpose. It is understood from the start that if you need an upgrade to this device, enough stuff will have changed that you will more or less automatically be looking at a replacement.
So, the company decides âhey, letâs make this device programmable, so itâs âsmartâ, and letâs give it an Internet interface because controlling it from a tablet/cell phone is a great selling point for anybody who wants programmable stuff ïżœïżœ we can give them an elaborate interface without having to build the hardware into the device itselfâ.
Well, now you have a device which is sophisticated enough to do Bad Things (because it has to be, in order to be âsmartâ), which has an Internet connection. There is no way to be sure in advance that a sophisticated programmable device cannot be hacked. (Anybody who claims otherwise is either ignorant or lying.) There is also no way to be sure that a hackable device with an Internet connection canât be hacked by way of that connection. (Again: anybody claiming otherwise is either ignorant or lying.) The best we can ever do is to say: âthe software which comes with this device is proof against all the hacks we were aware of and tested againstâ â but hackers are always out there looking for new exploits so this is not a permanent guarantee, even in the best of cases.
So in order to keep your device secure, it has to receive software updates.
But monitoring for new threats and writing updates to stop them? That means a programmer has to do work, for which they must be paid. So there has to be revenue to pay that programmer. How do you get that? Either you charge up front, in which case the product has a limited lifespan before it is costing your company money to continue support, or else you have to charge a subscription fee, which means your product kind of sucks.
(Or, of course, you can go open source â but this both gives any competitors you may have insight into anything clever you may have done and makes it easier for homebrewers to bypass your company completely. As 3D printing becomes more and more available, this is more and more of a thing for small device manufacturers to have to worry about.)
(This is, incidentally, related to how Nintendo wants you to buy a subscription to an online service to do online play instead of just providing a free service that they canât back out of without shutting everything down, even if it starts putting them in the red, as they did with the DS/Wii âNintendo Wi-Fi Connectionâ thing.)

Wearing a baseball cap and thick, black-rimmed glasses, Cameron Chell is part defense contractor, part tech executive. His company, Draganfly, used to mainly work with emergency services in North America, selling drones and the accompanying software that could deliver medical equipment, or film traffic accidents from above. But since last February, the Canadian has pivoted his business to cater to a market more than 8,000 miles away: Ukraine.
Now, there are 40 Draganfly drones in Ukraine, repurposed for search-and-rescue missions in bombed-out buildings, landmine detection, and other military tasks that Chell declines to detail. The company has demonstrated its tech to the Ukrainian Air Force, the Ministry of Defence, as well as President Volodomyr Zelenskyyâs fundraising initiative, United24. âThere isn't a branch of the government we havenât worked with or interacted with in some way.â Sometimes he gets texts from Ukrainian contacts, saying a friend of a friend needs a drone for their unit, can he help? Draganfly obliges, of course, for a discounted fee.
Since Russia invaded, military aid has been flowing into Ukraine. The US has committed $39 billion since the war started, the UK $37.3 billion, and the EU $12 billion. Chell and his company are part of a scramble of international tech companies rushing into the country to try and benefit. Business has been so good, heâs set up a field office in Ukraine with four full-time employees. But Draganfly is operating in Ukraine not just to support the cause or to collect the cash. Itâs also come for the data.
The war in Ukraine presents an unprecedented opportunity for military tech companies. The scale of the fighting and the sheer number of weapons systems and high-tech sensors deployed have created a vast amount of data about how battles are fought and how people and machines behave under fire. For businesses that want to build the next generation of weapons, or train systems that will be useful in future conflicts, that is a resource of incalculable value.
âEverybody could have the same AI engine. The only differentiator now is how good are the data inputs that you have,â says Chell. âMaking sure that it's your sensors collecting that data, and feeding it into your software, is absolutely important. Itâs more important than ever to be present.â
There is an old, much derided, clichĂ© that data is the ânew oilâânot only because of its cash value, but because of how it will fuel so much of the future economy. Just as large language models, like OpenAIâs ChatGPT, are trained on hundreds of billions of words, AI products in the defense world also have to be fed vast amounts of data. A company selling drones that can autonomously identify tanks, for example, needs to train its software on huge numbers of images: tanks covered in camouflage, tanks obscured by bushes, tanks deep in mud. It needs to be able to recognize the difference between a military tank and a civilian tractor, as well as what type of tank itâs looking at, so it knows friend from foe. For a company like Draganfly, which is selling drones with landmine-detection software, staff need to train their AI on thousands of images, so their system can tell the difference between a rock formation and a modern mine.
âUkraine is the only place in the world where you can get that data at the moment,â says Ingvild Bode, associate professor at the Center for War Studies at the University of Southern Denmark.
Draganfly is far from the only company to have noticed the potential of Ukraine to gather data. Chell is among a wave of international AI executives traveling to and from the conflict to test and train their products. German AI company Helsing says it has staff regularly traveling to the country. Data analytics company Palantir has opened an office in Kyiv and is offering its services pro bono. âYou have to ask yourself, why are they doing that?â says Bode. âThere are a number of reasons, and the value of the data will absolutely be one of them.â
Some international companies working in the conflict zone are using their experiences in Ukraine to refine the products they are selling back home. Seattle-based BRINC has designed âLemurâ drones, which are designed to be able to break through windows to access buildings. In the US, theyâve been marketed to police to use in active shooter scenarios. But in Ukraine, theyâre being used to help search for survivors after missile attacks, according to the companyâs founder, Blake Resnick. The company recently released its Lemur 2 model, which âdoes utilize some feedback that we've gotten from Ukraine,â he says. The new model can make floor plans of a building as it flies around and can maintain its position in the air, even when the pilot takes their hands off the controller. These ideas might have grown out of BRINCâs work in Ukraine, but according to the companyâs YouTube advert, theyâre now being marketed to police forces back in the US.
The âdata is the new oilâ clichĂ© might illustrate dataâs value. But it also speaks to the way data can be extracted from a country without benefiting the people who live there. In the first year after the invasion, Ukraine was so welcoming to American tech companies that even startups whose pitches had been rejected at home by the Pentagon got the green light to be trialed by Ukrainian soldiers on the front lines. But that warm welcome is starting to chill, as Ukrainian government officials recognize how valuable their battlefield data would be if it remained in Ukrainian hands.
âYou canât even imagine how many foreign companies are already using Ukraine as a testing ground for their products: AI companies like Clearview, Palantir; anti-jamming systems; everything that has a software component is in Ukraine right now,â says Alex Bornyakov, Ukraine's deputy minister for digital transformation.
Ukraine is very aware of the value of its data, Bornyakov says, cautioning that companies shouldnât expect to arrive in the country and get access to data for nothing. âThis experience weâre in right nowâhow to manage troops, how to manage them smarter and automaticallyânobody has that,â he says. âThis data certainly is not for sale. Itâs only available if you offer some sort of mutually beneficial cooperation.â
Instead, Ukraine wants to use the data thatâs being gathered for its own defense sector. âAfter the war has finished, Ukraine companies will go to the market and offer solutions that probably nobody else has,â Bornyakov says.
Over the past few months, Ukraine has been talking up its ambitions to leverage its battlefield innovations to build a military-tech industry of its own.
âWe want to build a very strong defense tech industry,â says Nataliia Kushnerska, project lead for Brave1, a Ukrainian state platform designed to make it easier for defense-tech companies to pitch their products to the military. The country still wants to partner and cooperate with international companies, she says, but there is a growing emphasis on homegrown solutions.
Building a domestic industry would help protect the country from future Russian aggression, Kushnerska says. And Ukrainians have a better understanding of the dynamics of the battlefield than their international counterparts. âTechnologies that cost a huge amount of money, made in [overseas] laboratories, are coming to the front line, and they're not working,â she says.
Brave1âwhich was exclusively open to Ukrainian companies for its first two months of existenceâis not the countryâs only attempt to build a homegrown industry. Kushnerska describes secret tech conferences, attended by Ukrainian tech executives and Ministry of Defense officials, where discussions can take place about what the militaries need and how companies can help. In May, Ukraineâs parliament voted through a series of tax breaks for drone makers, in an attempt to encourage the industry. Those government efforts, combined with the huge demand for drones and the motivation to win the war, is creating entire new industries, says Bornyakov. He claims the country now has more than 300 companies making drones.
One of those 300 companies is AeroDrone, which started out as a crop-spraying system based in Germany. By the time of the full-scale invasion, the companyâs Ukrainian founder, Yuri Pederi, had already moved back to his home country. But the war inspired him to pivot the business. Now the drones, which can carry heavy loads of up to 300 kilograms, are being used by the Ukrainian military.
âWe donât know what the military are carrying,â says Dmytro Shymkiv, a partner at the company, who used to be deputy chief of staff for Petro Poroshenko, the Ukrainian president who preceded Zelenskyy. He might plead ignorance to what AeroDrone drones are transporting, but the company is collecting vast amounts of dataâup to 3,000 parametersâon each flight. âWe are very much aware of what's going on with every piece of equipment on board,â he says, adding that information about flying while being jammed, or in different weather conditions, can be repurposed in other industries or even other conflicts.
Aerodrone offers a glimpse of the future companies Bornyakov is describing. Armed with that data, the company sees a wide range of options for its future once the war is over, both military and civilian. If you can fly in a war zone, Shymkiv says, you can fly anywhere.
