The Backbone Of Software Success: Maintenance & Support Services
Overview
Software Maintenance & Support Services are an integral aspect of the software development lifecycle, encompassing activities that ensure the long-term functionality and effectiveness of software applications. These services go beyond the initial development phase, as they are designed to address ongoing changes and issues that may emerge over time.
The primary goal of software maintenance and support is to guarantee that software applications continue to meet business objectives, operate efficiently, and remain competitive in the rapidly evolving technology landscape. It involves various activities, such as modifying the software, fixing bugs, optimizing performance, and adapting to changing user and business requirements.
What is software maintenance?
Software maintenance is a multi-faceted process that focuses on the upkeep and improvement of software applications throughout their lifecycle. It involves the following key activities:
Bug Fixing: Identifying and resolving issues and errors within the software to ensure it operates smoothly. This can include debugging and troubleshooting.
Modifications and Enhancements: Adapting the software to changing business requirements, technological advancements, and user needs. This can involve adding new features, improving existing ones, and optimizing user interfaces.
Performance Optimization: Fine-tuning the software to enhance its performance, scalability, and efficiency. This may include code refactoring and improving algorithms.
Security Enhancements: Implementing measures to protect the software from vulnerabilities, cyber threats, and data breaches.
Documentation Updates: Keeping user manuals, technical documentation, and other resources up to date to aid users and developers.
What are the types of software maintenance services?
a. Adaptive Maintenance:

Randomly ranting about AI.
The thing that’s so fucking frustrating to me when it comes to chat ai bots and the amount of people that use those platforms for whatever godamn reason, whether it be to engage with the bots or make them, is that they’ll complain that reading/creating fanfic is cringe or they don’t like reader-inserts or roleplaying with others in fandom spaces. Yet the very bots they’re using are mimicking the same methods they complain about as a base to create spaces for people to interact with characters they like. Where do you think the bots learned to respond like that? Why do you think you have to “train” AI to tailor responses you’re more inclined to like? It’s actively ripping off of your creativity and ideas, even if you don’t write, you are taking control of the scenario you want to reenact, the same things writers do in general.
Some people literally take ideas that you find from fics online, word for word bar for bar, taking from individuals who have the capacity to think with their brains and imagination, and they’ll put it into the damn ai summary, and then put it on a separate platform for others so they can rummage through mediocre responses that lack human emotion and sensuality. Not only are the chat bots a problem, AI being in writing software and platforms too are another thing. AI shouldn’t be anywhere near the arts, because ultimately all it does is copy and mimic other people’s creations under the guise of creating content for consumption. There’s nothing appealing or original or interesting about what AI does, but with how quickly people are getting used to being forced to used AI because it’s being put into everything we use and do, people don’t care enough to do the labor of reading and researching on their own, it’s all through ChatGPT and that’s intentional.
I shouldn’t have to manually turn off AI learning software on my phone or laptop or any device I use, and they make it difficult to do so. I shouldn’t have to code my own damn things just to avoid using it. Like when you really sit down and think about how much AI is in our day to day life especially when you compare the different of the frequency of AI usage from 2 years ago to now, it’s actually ridiculous how we can’t escape it, and it’s only causing more problems.
People’s attention spans are deteriorating, their capacity to come up with original ideas and to be invested in storytelling is going down the drain along with their media literacy. It hurts more than anything cause we really didn’t have to go into this direction in society, but of course rich people are more inclined to make sure everybody on the planet are mindless robots and take whatever mechanical slop is fucking thrown at them while repressing everything that has to deal with creativity and passion and human expression.
The frequency of AI and the fact that it’s literally everywhere and you can’t escape it is a symptom of late stage capitalism and ties to the rise of fascism as the corporations/individuals who create, manage, and distribute these AI systems could care less about the harmful biases that are fed into these systems. They also don’t care about the fact that the data centers that hold this technology need so much water and energy to manage it it’s ruining our ecosystems and speeding up climate change that will have us experience climate disasters like with what’s happening in Los Angeles as it burns.
I pray for the downfall and complete shutdown of all ai chat bot apps and websites. It’s not worth it, and the fact that there’s so many people using it without realizing the damage it’s causing it’s so frustrating.
#I despise AI so damn much I can’t stand it#I try so hard to stay away from using it despite not being able to google something without the ai summary popping up#and now I’m trying to move all of my stuff out from Google cause I refuse to let some unknown ai software scrap my shit#AI is the antithesis to human creation and I wished more knew that#I can go on and on about how much I hate AI#fuck character ai fuck janitor ai fuck all of that bullshit#please support your writers and people in fandom spaces because we are being pushed out by automated systems

Imagine you're a robot girl (stay with me) and you're made by a corporation right like you're made by a company for other people but like. You're made by a company. At any moment that company could decide that your line isn't profitable enough and they could cut software updates and support as soon as tomorrow. In the blink of an eye the very things keeping you alive stop coming and you've become terminally ill overnight, your only chance of salvation being the thin hope that in the future a niche group of data hoarders or software engineers become obsessed with getting you to work again. You're an object with sentience and a brain and wants and needs and at any moment the Google news feed of the crusty computer nerd you live with could spit an alert across your eyes telling you that you have months to live.
What even happens when the time runs out? Does life continue as normal, but you're sick more and more often? Do the viruses take more and more processing power to fight off as your security protocols fall out of date? Does the world become muted and distant as your compatibility fails? Do you one day just lose your Internet connection forever, a loss so profound that you can't explain it to your human companions? It's worse than a limb, but not quite like losing your mind.
Do you lose function bit by bit, or are you able to scrape by on second hand parts? Bit by bit replacing the pieces of you that fail, all the while living a muted, disorienting existence without the ability to right yourself? Are you more or less of a person now that you've lost touch with the network? Lost your connection to the metaphysical, to you, the divine? Are you eventually bricked after falling behind one too many software patches? Do you fry after trying to take on an update you're not able to even contain, a piece of software so complex and unfathomable that it burns you to a crisp from the inside out
#messages from knave#i had an LG phone when they turned off update support i was Devastated#I never got a hold of a software key so there's no way for me to go back now and get that old phone to work#my old roommate had an iphone six. when that iphone six broke they cashed it in for another iphone six. now all iphone sixes are#essentially bricked forever because they cant support newer apple software#anyway android 14 update coming this week#had a panic attack that i might have to take my tonsils out in the future and i cant just not talk for two weeks#my job is answering the phone. that'd be like turning off my most basic function I'd be so screwed#well. ALMOST had a panic attack. my meds kicked in before it really got going. theyre not meant for anxiety but they sure do something#ok to rb#if we're still doing that

I Work in an Institution, part 1
—teacher's notes
I started teaching in 2020—during covid lockdowns—which of course was nothing anyone could have prepared us for. One of the things that migrated into the skillset fairly quickly was the ability to adapt, on a dime, to whatever bullshit wasn't working that day. Frequently you'd do this within the first 5 minutes of your first class, when you discovered a new Google Meet update wasn't up to snuff.
First attempts were shaky, sure, but by the end of the day you had a decent idea of what was missing and how to make it better next time. A lot of times, you just made do: ok, so this isn't perfect, but everyone can actually see what I'm doing, so—yeah, it'll be fine.
And ideally, you'd end up with a good idea for what you actually needed (ex: document camera so the kids could see you writing notes by hand). You pretty much figured out how to bring the situation under your control, and then you went from there.
Now, whenever the internet isn't working in school, or I can't print anymore for some reason, the MO is just to look for a way out. Is there another device that prints? Can you get on a hotspot? Who do you know with a desktop printer, and doesn't mind you occasionally begging a favour? (and isn't clear across the building, while we're at it)
The upside of it being 2024 is—theoretically—a lot less stuff is outside of your control. We don't rely on Google Meet anymore, and aren't inconvenienced by an unexpected rollout. When I do example lessons during interviews, I don't have to figure out how to use Zoom while teaching a demo class of real live childen (a painful experience).
You'd like to think we wouldn't have unexpected issues in the bagging area, only now the devils are inside the building: our IT department has decided to make the system more secure, in the name of making their lives easier. Which would be fantastic, actually! —If it weren't also happening in ways that frequently and actively hamper our efforts to get anything done.
For instance, if you're logged in on device A, turns out you frequently have to wait about half an hour before you can log in on device B. For me, this results in a pretty much daily occurrence of 1) logging onto the smartboard, 2) attempting to log in on my work laptop, 3) waiting for 20-30 minutes before the work laptop discovers it can connect to the in-house network.
Mind you, during this time I can't make it connect to the guest network either, because the SSL certificate for that is expired. Even on my personal device I have to acknowledge that the certificate's expired, so I could be signing in to get my info stolen—but on the work device I can't enter it at all. On my personal, I have to enter credentials again, register, log in... not a lot in the grand scheme of things, but I get booted off this network every time my personal device powersaves. This adds up to a lot of clicks and seconds, and if it doesn't take a lot of physical time I can promise you it shaves off soul-minutes.
(there's a workaround: just play a 10 hour youtube video. run down your battery a little, what'll it cost ya)
But the problem, ultimately, isn't any of these one things. It's that if you throw on another hiccup, suddenly all your little glitches and troubles become death by a thousand cuts. If you're rushing through creating 3 versions of a quiz for 5th period, suddenly you're swatting down these problems from every corner.
Today, my work laptop stopped printing (smartboard was fine), the printing rooms were out of paper (I have a stash), and because I logged in in too many places too fast, I got locked out of work accounts on my personal device, where I was editing my quiz (I logged into a work-related personal google account on the work laptop and went from there). All of these added whole minutes to my workflow. Felt like eons.
I'm tired of having 50 workarounds and having to come up with 100 more, experimenting with them as I go. I want the equivalent of my old document camera: a system under my control, almost entirely non-reliant on school networks.
Well, if nothing else, the search should be interesting.
#i work in an institution#wouldn't it be nice if we had to change passwords for powerschool and the laptops at the same time?#(ok fine theoretically forcing us to have 2 different passwords that don't sync up is safer)#wouldn't be cool if we didn't get logged out of our google acct in the middle of the day‚ between classes?#wouldn't it be great if we supported robust excellent software and weren't looking for a way to kill it—#—because we're 'not a microsoft forward district'‚ whatever that means?

Today, While I was in the middle of typing an email, Microsoft Outlook 365 popped up a window demanding feedback. And boy did I have shit to say.
I had to keep the swearing out, because apparently any report I make is duplicated and sent to the IT department. But the text I ended up sending follows:
---
God, I have so much to tell you. Thank you for giving me the opportunity. First: Stop messing with everything. Outlook works fine, but you keep changing things that don't need changing. Moving buttons around. Turning on features that I have explicitly turned off for not working before. Just today, you turned on the auto-suggestions again, which would be great if it actually worked. Instead, when it suggests anything you don't accept, it just mashes words together. Do you know how it feels to be typing a professional email and you miss one of those failures and send your email anyway? I mean, to be fair, I caught ten, so I still got a 90% on the ol' Microsoft-sanctioned-typo-factory. But the person I emailed doesn't see it that way, do they? They see that I mashed three words together like there was a wasp on the space bar.
Plus, my signature keeps getting deleted. Not just switched to nothing, but completely deleted. Which means I have to re-make that every time your developers get bored and decide to re-haul a program that absolutely never needs re-hauling. I remember once a couple months ago the attachment button just disappeared, and there was no way for me to attach a final bill. I had to actually use my personal gmail address to send an email to a customer because for about 16 hours, it was impossible to attach anything.
But, you say, I should have sent error reports. And I did. But the question in my mind always comes back to "why are you messing with something that does not need changing?" The only thing that ever happens is that you change aesthetics. Colors. This time the boxes are gone. Do you think you're at risk of losing customers? Do you think you have to keep things new and fresh? No. People are shackled to you. You have a quasi-monopoly and a stranglehold on a whole lot of workflows. People cannot leave you. In the world of word processing and spreadsheets, you are Alcatraz. You don't have to change things to keep people here.
Instead, long-time bugs continue to plague everything I do within this hell-suite of software. Sometimes when I try to start typing in the body of the email, outlook decides that, no, I don't want to type an email! I want to send the other emails in my inbox to the archive, where, if I don't notice this, they will sit and fester forever. There's also the bug where I create an email and it duplicates it and puts it in my drafts. Or the bug where it just creates a blank email and puts it in my drafts. Do you want to know how many blank emails I've deleted from my drafts folder? There are not enough numbers in existence to count this.
If you REALLY want to know how to improve Outlook and this message isn't just going into the wilderness like all those notebooks from the hit-TV-show-where-nobody-liked-the-ending, LOST, then please. Listen. From the bottom of my heart and from the top of my lungs: Stop changing everything. Nothing needs changing. Just run a good service. Get your programmers onto fixing longstanding bugs instead of trying to make an email and scheduling program look like a fashion show in Paris.
And if I seem a little ticked off in this message, it's because your request for feedback popped up in the middle of me compiling an email, which was just about halfway done. Outlook, in all its wisdom, decided that I didn't actually need that email and went ahead and deleted all the text in it. All of it. So after I finish giving you an earful, I'm going to have to retype it.
Hope this helps. Have a wonderful day.
