Assistive Devices and Services for the Deaf
Many television programs in the United States and many other countries are “closed captioned” in that the audio portion of the program is displayed in text form on the screen. The “captions” are closed in the sense that the text of the audio portion of the program is normally hidden from the viewers. Hearing-impaired viewers may choose to follow the program by turning on the decoding of the hidden signal. In the United States, the Television Decoder Circuitry Act of 1990 mandates that all televisions manufactured for sale in the U.S. after July 1993 must contain a built-in caption decoder if the picture tube is 13" or larger. Older television sets will need a special external decoder to display captions. An increasingly larger portion of television broadcast in the United States now includes closed captioning. The U. S. Federal Communications Commission has a mandate requiring that 95% of all television broadcasts should have closed captioning.Alerting and Signaling DevicesPeople who have severe hearing impairment cannot rely on standard alarm clocks, doorbells, telephone ringers, or smoke detectors. In addition, hearing-impaired parents may not be able to hear the cry of their young children. In all these situations they will require special devices that provide visual and/or tactile alerts in the form of flashing lights, body-worn vibrators, or vibrating pads that may be placed under a pillow. Both portable and stationary alerting devices are available. Portable devices such as an alarm clock with a vibrating pad can be carried with the user when traveling or even from room to room within the house. Stationary systems equip the entire house or any part of it for a single (e.g., baby-cry detector) application or for multiple devices (telephone, doorbell, smoke/fire alarm, etc.).Hearing-impaired people whose speech may not be intelligible in telephone communication rely on text telephones. Text telephones, which are also known as TTY machines (teletype machines) or TDDs (telecommunication devices for the deaf), require communication partners at either end of a telephone connection to type out their messages instead of speaking them. The technology is similar to chat rooms found on the Internet where people communicate in real time by typing their messages. However, unlike computers, which use ASCII codes to transmit text, text telephones use a coding system called Baudot. A text telephone cannot communicate with a computer without special software to convert Baudot code into ASCII code. Some modern text telephones have the option of using either the Baudot code (which is certainly required to communicate with an older text telephone) or ASCII. The text telephone consists of a keyboard and a LCD (liquid crystal display) screen that holds a line of text. It signals an incoming call by flashing lights or, optionally, by way of a vibrating wristband. There are an estimated 4 million users of text telephones, which is useful not only to deaf people but also others with severe speech disorders.
Several companies such as DT Interpreting provide on-demand remote ASL interpreting via two-way video links over the Internet. For instance, a deaf patient who uses ASL for communication in a local hospital can communicate with the hearing medical staff through an interpreter located in another city. The remotely located interpreter watches the deaf patient's signs on a monitor. Similar the deaf patient watches the interpreter on a monitor. The medical staff speaks to the interpreter, which is relayed to the patient by the interpreter through ASL. The patient's signed messages are relayed to the medical staff by way speech by the interpreter. While an on-site interpreter is the best solution in these situations the cost and the availability of a "live" interpreter has led to the development of these high-tech innovations.
Every state in the United States has a message relay center (MRC) to connect people who use text telephone with people who use a standard telephone. MRC is useful when a person, who does not have a text telephone, needs to initiate calls to or receive calls from a text telephone. The operator in the MRC uses a text telephone and a voice telephone to relay messages between the two parties. MRCs make it possible for text telephone users to connect to any telephone, not just other text telephones. The calls handled by MRCs, although operator assisted, are charged at the same rate as regular telephone calls. In the U.S., text telephones can be used to summon emergency assistance by directly dialing 911 (in areas where this facility is available) without going through an MRC.
In the United States, major hotels and motels fall under the Americans with Disabilities Act which requires them to provide a hearing-impaired guest with assistive equipment. When a reservation for a hearing impaired person is made, a request for a TTY or amplified phone, closed caption decoder (if necessary), door knocker, and a visual signal smoke alarm may be made.

PARKSAFE 580 AUTOMATIC CAR PARKING SYSTEM BY WOHR PARKING SYSTEMS
The increasing adoption of automated car parking systems is a trend that’s here to stay. Across the world, real estate developers and municipal agencies have come to realise that the scarcity of parking space is a substantial problem that requires urgent attention and consideration. The continued adoption of smart car parking systems can help alleviate some of these problems.
The automatic car parking system is one of the most pioneering innovations of our times. Some salient features of this parking system are:
● It is a multi-level car parking system in which cars are parked vertically, thereby using less space on the ground.
● The automated multilevel car parking system typically has horizontal pallets or carts on each level and a vertical lift that carries the cars from the drive level to and from the different floors for parking and retrieving.
● The driver is eliminated from the parking process. The car is driven to an entry point where the driver and passengers exit the car. The vehicle is then automatically transported to its allotted space.
The Parksafe 580 is an automated parking system with one central vertical lift and storage shelves positioned either rightwards or leftwards of the vertical lift. It is available in tower, pit or tower/pit configurations with the transfer area at either the base level, top-level or at one of the intermediate levels. It is possible to arrange between 1-3 parking rows rightwards or leftwards of the vertical lift.
The safety provided by the Parksafe 580 is another major facet of the system. There are no ramps, sharp edges or gaps in the transfer area, which ensures the safety of the users while using the system. The Parksafe 580 automated car parking system comes with a free fall arrestor that acts as a safeguard against the pallet free falling in case some part of the system fails. The Parksafe 580 also features mechanical interlocks during every exchange which ensures that the lift is never suspended during critical exchange operations. This system also comes with software and hardware switches to protect the lift from overtravel. The system comes installed with a dedicated safety PLC and stop monitoring circuit. The Parksafe 580 comes with access monitoring and control to manage the service and fire doors’ operations. Fire and earthquake detectors can also be installed onto this system for protection from calamities. This system includes vehicle detection and dynamic monitoring wherein the system can detect tall cars, open doors or an open trunk if they extend beyond the permissible limits. The E-stop and Open-Door buttons are strategically placed for enhanced safety in case of an emergency. The system can also detect fractures in its driving chain and warn the operator before an accident occurs. The Touchless RFID Chips used to operate the system are coded and tamper-proof to prevent theft, vandalism etc.
Wohr has worked towards making the operation of the Parksafe 580 as convenient as possible. It features an Active Driver Assistance System - with a display and traffic lights - to assist the driver with the parking process. It is also possible to integrate a turntable into this system so that the car always reaches the driver the right way forward. The system also comes with a remote control that allows the driver to initiate parking commands safely and conveniently from the car. The waiting lounge where the driver waits for his car to arrive features a display letting him know the status of the system. The Transfer Area in the Parksafe 580 has an appealing design that helps polish the aesthetics of the rest of the setup. It is also possible to conveniently integrate EV charging points into this system.
Wohr’s focus on the reliability of its systems is also quite commendable. The Parksafe 580 comes with an Auxiliary Drive that allows the user to operate the system manually in case the main motor is not functional. The structure of this parking system is tested and validated taking into account wind, earthquakes, and local standards. This system can be installed quite quickly since Wohr ensures strict quality control at the factory and no welding, drilling or cutting is done on-site. The Parksafe 580 comes with a remote monitoring system that provides email notifications for any errors that may occur. This system has the most advanced motor and drive technology available, along with smart sensors that ensure the smooth operation of the setup.
The Parksafe 580 features special sound barriers to avoid the transmission of noise and vibrations to the building. It comes with an insulated highspeed roller shutter - with safety sensors and see-through panels for monitoring. This system also ensures fast access times with a max lift speed of 0.9 m/sec. This system features an energy-efficient design with Automatic Transfer Area lighting control and a coloured touchscreen user interface with safety verification.
There are a number of ways in which the system can prove to be beneficial for architects and developers. For example, the system comes in flexible configurations that allow it to be installed in a variety of layouts and floor plans. This system can be either freestanding or installed inside the building. It can be configured to be overground, underground or even a hybrid setup. The Parksafe 580 doesn’t require a machine room, which ends up saving even more space for architects and developers.
Contact Wohr to find out more about the Parksafe 580 and their other car parking systems in India. Wohr is the industry leader with the most extensive range of car parking systems, and proven expertise built up over 60+ years and thousands of installations worldwide.

Nutech 2104 Canister Cleaning System
The cleanliness of the canister is very critical to the overall accuracy of the detection of VOCs in the sample.
EPA Methods TO-14A and TO-15 require sampling devices be clean down to sub-ppbv level. The newly release EPA TO-15A dictates a much more strict requirement on the cleanliness of the canister than TO-15 published in 1999: from 0.2 ppbv at 30 psig to ≤0.020 ppbv (≤20 pptv) at 0 psig. The 2104 canister cleaning system is suitable for meeting these requirements. It is able to clean SUMMA canisters of various sizes (1/3/6/15L) as well as Tedlar bags.
Features of 2104 Canister Cleaning System
1. Dual pumps (Turbo Pump and Diaphragm Pump) are custom designed, with the final vacuum pressure reaching less than 10mTorr.
2. The 2104 is capable of automatic humidification, leak checking, and easy operation.
3. The 2104 uses dedicated software, capable of multiple rounds of cleaning as well as customized final vacuum or pressure. This automation will allow chemists to focus on other lab work, improving laboratory efficiency.
Nutech 2203 Precision Static Dilutor

best video doorbell
A video doorbell is half doorbell and half security camera. Video doorbells work by sending real-time alerts to your phone and supplying you with access to a live video feed of who's ringing the bell. A built-in microphone and speaker allows you to talk together with your guest via two way audio, and in some cases, the device also will have smart features like smart locks so you'll let the person in without physically opening the door yourself. Most candidates for best video doorbell camera today fall under the smart video doorbell category. They're Wi-Fi-enabled and offer features like a chargeable battery, two-way communication, a motion detector, video feed and recording, alongside the normal doorbell button. But the designs, video quality, video storage subscriptions and installation process for every doorbell cam can vary. We've highlighted our favorite models below, and we've explained exactly how we test video doorbells. So if you are looking for the simplest video doorbell, likelihood is that it's among those we've tested. We update this list periodically.
Arlo Video Doorbell
Arlo's best video doorbell cam is straightforward to put in, performs well and has competitive features and cloud storage fees, starting at a month. With a cloud storage subscription, you get access to advanced functionality like custom person, animal, vehicle and package alerts. The Arlo Video Doorbell, our pick for best video doorbell overall, also features a built-in siren, two-way audio, motion detection zones and arm/disarm modes. Read more about the Arlo Video Doorbell.
Ring Video Doorbell Wired
Ring's Video Doorbell Wired is one among the simplest deals on the market: it is a fully functional video doorbell, with 1080p resolution and therefore the standard notification features, including motion alerts and person-only alerts. Ring's app is straightforward to use, and provides fairly quick push notifications when people approach the door. It also offers two-way talk and reliable night-sight. Ring's subscription service allows for 60-day video storage and a couple of other useful features, including Smart Responses with Alexa.
Eufy Security Video Doorbell 2K
The Eufy Security Video Doorbell 2K includes tons of features that the majority companies charge for, like enough internal memory to store up to 30 days’ worth of video, also because the ability to differentiate between people and other motion, like from birds or swaying branches. The Eufy doesn’t have as wide a viewing angle because the Arlo, but the Eufy doorbell creates clear recordings as long as motion is detected, for up to 5 minutes, and it stores those clips in its 4 gigabytes of built-in memory or Eufy’s cloud service, which offers 30 days of history for $3 per month per camera. And although the Eufy draws power from your existing doorbell wires, it won’t work together with your existing chime but it does include its own wireless plug-in chime, so we don’t think that’s really a drag.
Nest Hello
Google’s Nest Hello is that the most advanced best video doorbell cam we’ve tested. Unlike most smart doorbells, it can record and store video 24/7, but at 1600×1200 pixels, which remains crisp, but slightly lower resolution than on our other two picks. For straightforward access, Google’s cloud service also automatically tags clips that include motion or people, using facial-recognition software to find out and identify over time who is coming and going. This comprehensive approach comes with an elevated price, however: A Nest Aware subscription, which is important for video, costs $6 a month to capture motion events and store them for 30 days and $12 per month to store events for 60 days or 24/7 recording for 10 days. Therefore the operating costs are above for many doorbell cameras we tested.
Blue by ADT Video Doorbell
The Blue by ADT Video Doorbell receives a really Good rating for video quality and offers great data security, but its reaction time is pretty slow and its smart features and data privacy are within the middle of the pack. Its feature set includes monitoring zones, face recognition, and voice control via Amazon Alexa. ADT claims support for Apple Home Kit/Siri, and Google Assistant is within the works. The Blue by ADT doorbell gives you a rolling 24 hours of free cloud video storage, but you'll expand it to 30 days of storage for $6 per month for unlimited cameras at one location.
Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus
For a battery-powered best video doorbell with terrific video quality, consider the Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus. It receives a superb rating for video quality and offers great data security. It also falls within the middle of the pack for data privacy, but it could offer more smart features and faster response times for alerts and loading live feeds. Its feature set includes a removable rechargeable battery, voice control via Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, monitoring zones, alert schedules, privacy zones that permit you black out areas you don’t want to film (such as a neighbor’s house), and pre-roll video that provides you a four-second clip of what happened before the doorbell detected motion. With an optional subscription to a hoop Protect Plan, you’ll get a rolling 60 days of motion-triggered video clips and photo snapshots between recordings.
SimpliSafe Doorbell Pro SS3
If you’re concerned about privacy, then the SimpliSafe Doorbell Pro SS3 is that the doorbell to shop for, because it is the only model in our ratings with a really Good rating for data privacy. It also rates well for video quality and data security. The downsides? It lacks many smart features, and it's slow to send alerts then load live video feeds. Its few features include monitoring zones, person detection, and HDR video, but there is no support for voice control via digital assistants.
It's easy to ascertain why you would possibly be tempted to urge a video doorbell. These compact streaming cameras allow you to video-chat with visitors and keep an eye fixed on package deliveries from the screen on your smartphone. Porch pirates, beware. These devices are proving to be quite popular, too. The amount of video doorbells sold per annum within the U.S. is estimated to top 5 million units in 2022, consistent with Parks Associates and Statista. To assist you discover the simplest doorbell for your home, we've rounded up the simplest video doorbells from our tests, listed below in alphabetical order. You’ll find models from Blue by ADT, Eufy, Google Nest, Ring, and SimpliSafe. All of them feature night-sight, HD video, and two-way audio.

All of the essential gear fit for your next vacation
As you head out on your summer vacation —or any vacation —make sure you are prepared. Here is the actual gear that we pack up and take with us whenever we hit the road (or air).
Vacation planning
We all bring tech on vacation. Having just returned from a spring trip, this is the gear that I brought with me —and recommend —that got me through a near week-long trip without hiccup.
Zendure SuperTank
Zendure SuperTank
The first we needed when heading out on our vacation was a reliable battery pack. This was going to be essential when we were in the car, in the air, or wherever we end up. We couldn’t guarantee we’d find power so a battery —and a big one at that —was crucial.
youtube
After our initial review of the Zendure SuperTank we knew this was the one we were going to bring along. It is massive —the largest allowed on planes —and had four ports including multiple USB-C. That was enough for us and our travel partners do ensure power for our phones, watches, cameras, tablets, and computers.
It is also quite small and portable compared to most other battery packs of this size. It slipped easily into the side of our bag and we were off.
After a wildly successful crowdfunding campaign, the SuperTank is now available to order for $99.
Nikon Z 7
Our iPhones are exceptional cameras. They get better each year with each new phone and each iterative iOS update. There are still times though when we want to get just the best images possible. Whether it is low light or a distant subject, we have to turn to our dedicated shooter.
Nikon Z7 Mirrorless camera
For us, that camera is the Nikon Z 7. We reviewed this camera when it launched and what makes it so perfect for our vacations is the fact it is so compact. We need a camera that is far better than our iPhone but without bogging us down. Z 7 is a mirrorless full-frame camera that is small enough for us to bring with us while not being overly burdened.
It has a massive 47MP, a growing lineup of new Z lenses, in-body three-axis stabilization, 4K video, and much more. It pairs to your iPhone via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi which make it great to either transfer images after you shoot them for quick sharing or controlling from your iPhone to get the great selfie.
The Nikon Z7 is available from Nikon authorized reseller Adorama with no tax collected on orders shipped outside New York and New Jersey*.
B&H Photo and Amazon are also Nikon authorized resellers who sell the Z7.
Zendure SuperPort
With a giant battery like that you need a great charger. Luckily Zendure thought the same thing. The SuperPort is a four-part multi-charger capable of up to 100W of power output. The SuperTank allows for 100W in so they go great together and is the fastest possible way to power up your battery.
Zendure SuperPort 4 ports
Unlike other multi-chargers from Anker, Satechi, RAVPower, or Aukey, Zendure took a different design approach. Rather than stacking all the ports on top of one another vertically then expect users to lay it on its side, Zendure started with a horizontal charger. It is flat and wide similar to an old MacBook Air external SuperDrive with all ports side by side. It is exceptionally convenient and easy to access.
When we travel, it seems we have more gear than ever that needs to constantly be charged. Our cameras, phones, smart watches, battery packs, tablets etc. Even if you go with the minimum for an Apple fan with just an iPhone and Apple Watch, if there are two of you (or more) you will need a few ports to utilize.
The four provided by SuperPort are great, two of which are super fast USB-C. That means we can leave our MacBook Pro charger at home and just rely on this for almost everything.
SuperPort 4 is also available to grab for $69. Don’t forget the 100W cable if you plan to charge your SuperTank at full speed though.
Insta360 OneX
If you are looking for more stylized photos and videos, we recommend the Insta360 One X.
This 360-degree camera shoots both photos and video and has a huge array of different effects. Create Matrix-inspired Bullet Time videos that appear as though time has frozen. Or sped up videos that slow down and rotate the camera’s perspective after the fact.
The intelligent software also is able to remove the selfie stick so it appears you are just standing there in front of the camera with nothing in your hand. This is a super fun device that we even took SCUBA diving with the added housing. Stay tuned for a more in-depth review soon.
It is available to purchase from Amazon for $399.
LaCie Copilot
Whenever you are traveling and taking pictures, you need a backup. The LaCie Copilot was co-developed in partnership with DJI. It allows you to easily clone and backup any SD card or USB enclosure to the internal drive. We always worry about losing our camera or our footage so being able to back it up with the Copilot is really reassuring.
It is ultra-rugged with the silicone enclosure so it is fitting for any adventure you take it on.
Grab a 2TB version on Amazon for $349.
Moment Lenses and Nomad case
If you don’t want to take a whole camera with you but still want to elevate your images, try pairing your phone with a lens. We travel using the Nomad Rugged Case on our iPhone XS Max and use several different Moment lenses in conjunction. They have a wide angle lens, a fisheye lens, a 2X tele lens, an anamorphic lens, and a macro lens.
Nomad Rugged Case with a Moment lens
Each lens can be mounted to either the wide-angle or tele lens of the iPhone which can produce some great images. For example, if you put the tele lens on your wide angle lens you get 2X zoom with a wider aperture which results in less grainy pictures.
The Superfish fisheye lens is also quite stylized and is great in tight spaces or expansive landscapes and nothing captures pictures quite like the ultra-wide anamorphic lens.
The Rugged Case from Nomad is available for $49.95 and Moment has a variety of lenses available from its site.
Tile Pro
Tile Pro
Tile launched new trackers in the fall of 2018 including the new Tile Pro. Tile Pro is a great accessory to take on vacations to make sure you always have your gear with you. If you accidentally leave a bag behind, or your camera somewhere, Tile can help you find them.
The updated Tile Pro will work from over 300 feet away and is louder than ever. The battery is also replaceable so that you don’t have to worry about it dying on you.
Pick them up from Amazon.
HomeKit accessories
Smart home accessories aren’t always what you think of when you think vacation but they really do add a certain peace of mind. Leaving your home unattended can be worrysome if someone would break in or another emergency occurs and you aren’t aware.
There are three accessories for our home that best relieve that uncertainty.
August Smart Lock
First, the August third generation smart door lock. This HomeKit enabled lock not only gives you all the conveniences of a smart lock such as auto unlock as you approach, but you can be notified any time the lock is used.
If someone opens the front door, you will see that lock open regardless if its an intruder that picked the lock, a neighbor watering your plants, or a maintenance person coming to do a repair. Regardless, it is always nice to know when your door is locked or unlocked —and that you can unlock it if someone needs to get in. It is available on Amazon for less than $200.
We dig the HomeKit-enabled Circle 2 from Logitech. It comes in at around $170 and is a great value for the features. It is water resistant so you can place it outside your home or you can place it inside and always know what is going on.
The last home-monitoring accessory we have is a HomeKit smoke detector such as that from First Alert. The OneLink Smart Smoke Detector will alert you wherever you are if smoke or CO should be dected in your home. That that point you can jump on your security camera to see what’s happening or unlock the door for a neighbor or friend to get inside —assuming whatever is happening is minor enough you don’t need to immediately call emergency services.
Peak Design Travel Bag 45L
If there is one accessory we’d be hardpressed to go without it is the Peak Design travel bag. There are several bags they put out such as the Everyday Backpack or Everyday Messenger but for a vacation we pack up our 45L Travel Bag.
This giant backpack has several optional packing cubes that you can store your camera, clothes, shoes, tech accessories, and toiletries in which fit right into the bag. There are countless handles and hooks to clip on additional gear, straps that can be tucked away and hidden, expanding pockets for water bottles or small tripods, and much more.
it is a brilliantly designed bag that can fit everything we need and still fit under an airplane seat.
Grab it, or any of the packing cubes, on Amazon.

Threats, Security, Management, and Protection
With the current rise of endpoint devices, your organization is more susceptible to threats and cyberattacks.
In the digital age, more and more employees work from remote locations. Whether you hire freelancers, offer work-from-home days, or allow people to work on the road, employees need to collaborate with their coworkers through email and phone calls, and attend meetings with video conference capabilities. However, many workers need to connect to your corporate network in order to access shared data and files.
Endpoint devices allow employees to remotely communicate and connect with your networks. Endpoint devices include:
Desktops
Printers
Smartphones
Laptops
Tablets
Servers
Endpoints are one of the biggest targets for cyber criminals because these remote devices are especially vulnerable to various attacks. Criminals often attempt to use endpoint devices as entry points to access corporate networks and steal data, leverage existing software vulnerabilities, or hold information hostage. Learn more about endpoint devices, the possible threats, and today’s most effective practices to detect, respond, and protect your endpoints from these threats.
Endpoint Management and Threats
Two of the biggest endpoint threats are phishing and ransomware attacks. According to the Secureworks® 2018 Incident Response Insights Report, email compromise and ransomware were the most prevalent threats.
Users can fall victim to an attack from opening seemingly harmless emails or web links. Drive-by download attacks can even compromise an endpoint when a user browses to a website without ever clicking on anything. However, cyber criminals bait users and, once they bite, they have an entry point to an organization’s network.
Advanced Endpoint Threat Prevention is managed Next-Generation Antivirus, which helps organizations implement more effective and modern threat prevention tools. Businesses used to only need traditional antivirus software to protect their endpoints, but threat actors are now much more advanced.
According to a Ponemon Institute report surveying hundreds of IT security professionals, 63% thought companies could not monitor their off-network endpoints and 56% lacked a cohesive compliance strategy. Also, 50% of companies required 35+ full-time employees just to manage endpoints and an average of 425 hours are wasted every week investigating false security alerts.
Efficient detection and protection is a must to protect your organization and potentially save millions in staff hours every year. Supplementing your staff with experts can also help you move to newer technologies faster.
Remote Endpoint Host Service and Security
Endpoint security providers can remotely monitor your organization and gain a complete view of your endpoint activity to effectively monitor threats. When users attempt to login to the enterprise’s network, user credentials must be approved from the endpoint security system. The endpoint devices are scanned and analyzed to make sure they meet the corporate security policies.
This is similar to a guard stopping a contagious individual from entering a room full of people. If the guard recognizes someone is sick, he prevents the infectious person from possibly spreading disease to the others, i.e., spreading malware to the rest of your organization.
Endpoint Security Software
Endpoint security software should be installed on every endpoint device and your company’s critical servers. The software looks for known and unknown malware, tools used by threat actors and other potential threats. Signature-based protection looks for known threats, like a virus or trojan, while behavior-based protection looks for suspicious activity that may or may not leverage malware.
Security administrators can use software to restrict access to websites for individual users if there are potential security risks and threats, but even well-known websites that are considered to be reputable have been compromised so this is only marginally effective.
Endpoint security software applications include:
Virtual Private Network (VPN) access control
Anti-malware
Antivirus (AV) or Next-Generation Antivirus (NGAV)
Anti-spyware
Personal firewall
Application control
Endpoint Security: Detection and Response
Endpoint security aims to secure each endpoint device in order to protect your organization. Threat actors employ advanced and evasive techniques to compromise endpoint devices and access your sensitive information so prevention alone is not enough. Effective endpoint security solutions involve monitoring and protecting your organization to help halt phishing, malware, ransomware, and other endpoint threats.
Endpoint security products use application control, device control, anti-malware, vulnerability patching, and other strategies to detect and eliminate cyber threats. 24/7 monitoring is essential to detect malicious activity and protect enterprise endpoints. Since constant and consistent monitoring is required, automated threat detection is essential to lower costs and protect devices. In 2017, the global average cost for a data breach was $3.62 million; in the United States, the average cost was $7.35 million.
Endpoint Protection Platforms
Endpoint protection platforms are a combination of endpoint security products, either managed by experts on your security team or by a third party.
Endpoint Protection
Endpoint protection, sometimes called endpoint threat prevention, includes technology like AV and NGAV, which are focused on identifying threats and either blocking or quarantining them. This is necessary technology that reduces the threats that reach your organization, but all an attacker needs is one gap to get past these solutions. With over 350,000 new malicious programs or potentially unwanted applications registered each day by the AV-Test Institute it is impossible for any prevention technology alone to keep up.
Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR)
Endpoint detection and response helps find threats that slip past AV or NGAV. If managed by an MSSP, EDR may include actionable remediation recommendations. EDR tools and solutions focus on providing the visibility you need to detect, investigate and mitigate potential threats.
While EDR technology helps illuminate blind spots, it requires trained security analysts to interpret the output and take action. For example, if an intruder breaks a window or picks a door lock, your home security system will ring an alarm, alerting you of the potentially dangerous situation. Someone must still validate the threat to ensure the alert wasn’t just a raccoon tripping your security camera motion detectors. EDR provides the earliest possible warning that an endpoint device may have been compromised, but just like a great home security system you need experts to understand the data so you can respond appropriately and effectively.
Managed Security Service Providers (MSSPs) such as Secureworks offer EDR as a managed solution called Advanced Endpoint Threat Detection (AETD) for organizations who need help getting the most value from their technology.
This goes beyond surveillance and includes an analysis of threats and incident response recommendations. The fully-managed service also includes daily intelligence updates to keep up with new threats.
Monitored Server Protection
Servers are also susceptible to malware and targeted attacks. Though they are typically inside the protected corporate network, they are often a target due to their high concentration of enticing data. Threat actors often move laterally between compromised endpoints and servers to bypass other security controls. Monitored server protection facilitates compliance and visibility for your critical servers. Secureworks also includes EDR for your monitored Windows and Linux servers to help you identify more threats.
Advanced Endpoint Security Solution
Secureworks’ proprietary endpoint solution provides behavior-based analytics that can be partnered with other endpoint security vendor products. Sensors from Secureworks or partner vendors are installed directly on your endpoint devices, providing the telemetry needed to help identify threats that may slip past other security controls. This visibility is critical to identify threats that may be lurking in your organization.
Secureworks leverages the telemetry gathered either via our sensor or a partner’s EDR sensor and evaluates that data via our analytics engines that incorporate our threat intelligence. This combination of human intelligence and machine learning allow us to bubble up important alerts fast, so you don’t waste time on false positives or low risk issues. Secureworks currently process 250 billion logs per day from our global client base. Greater than 99% of events of interest are automatically resolved by the Secureworks Counter Threat Platform
(CTP). This then leaves less than 1% of the events to be manually analyzed. When Secureworks escalates a critical ticket, we strive to ensure they are meaningful, have embedded context and are immediately actionable.
The goal is to reduce the time to detect and effort to respond to cyber-attacks so your security team has more time for initiatives that help grow your business. The partner program is designed to foster cooperation between security vendors, leading to a more comprehensive view of threat activity, better context for validating and addressing threats, and ultimately providing more consistent results and better outcomes.

Nutech’s VsCMS 6700 Online VOCs Monitoring System Used in a Roadside Station
Working Principle of Nutech Online VOCs Monitoring Systems
The ambient air enters into the sampling unit of the online monitoring system at a constant flow rate. The VOCs are enriched and pretreated by low temperature trap, and then separated by gas chromatography through thermal desorption and detected by hydrogen flame ionization detector (FID) or mass spectrometry detector (MSD/TOF-MS). Therefore, the concentrations of total hydrocarbons (THC), non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHC) and each VOCs species are obtained.

‘Microscope on a chip’ could bring medical expertise to distant patients
Scientists are reducing the size and costs of medical microscopes to make it possible to use them more widely, and hook them up to experts able to diagnose an illness even from far away.
Falling ill in a remote part of the world can mean difficulty in finding the right care. Even where medical help may be available, it may be impossible to get a definitive diagnosis because of a lack of specialist expertise and laboratory equipment, such as microscopes.
Advanced miniaturisation means patients could benefit from a ‘microscope on a chip’, according to Dr Angel Dieguez, senior lecturer in the Department of Electronics and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Barcelona, Spain.
He runs a project called ChipScope, which uses some of the smallest light sources ever manufactured to push the limits of conventional optics, in a device potentially compact enough to fit in a pocket.
‘It may be possible for a modified mobile phone to have images of the nano-world,’ Dr Dieguez said.
Shadow images
ChipScope’s prototype illuminates a tissue sample using an array of minute light emitting diodes (LEDs) – among the smallest ever manufactured – to create shadow images of the specimen. These images are then captured using a detector sensitive enough to detect single photons and processed to produce a complete picture.
Through very precise control of these LEDs, which are about 1,000 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair, the ChipScope imaging system has a spatial resolution of just below 200 nanometres – which is the usual limit with visible light.
ChipScope’s microscope works by using some of the smallest light emitting diodes ever manufactured to create shadow images of the specimen. Image credit – TU Braunschweig
‘(By) triggering these tiny LEDs individually, and in sequence, we can add together the shadow images to build up a picture of the sample,’ Dr Dieguez said.
Given the practicalities of positioning tissue specimens or bacteria on such a tiny detector, ChipScope is working on a small analysis tool to position the sample between the LEDs and the sensor.
The mechanism under development uses a minute amount of liquid and high-precision pumps to manipulate the sample through channels in a plastic slide and into the field of view, which is about 10 microns – just under the size of an average human cell.
The microscope could also be used to identify and study pathogens, such as tuberculosis bacteria in a patient’s sputum.
But outside the mobile medical field, ChipScope could play a role in environmental monitoring, such as in assessing water quality or examining particulate matter in polluted air, Dr Dieguez says.
It could readily provide images of airborne nanoparticles, including those smaller than 2.5 microns, considered the most dangerous to human health.
Dr Dieguez estimates the microscope and control electronics cost less than €1,000 for the prototype being developed, and that further development and economies of scale could bring this down to as little as €10 or so.
While ChipScope shrinks the light sources and captures a specimen’s shadows, another novel system, developed by Grundium of Finland, uses repeat scans with coloured light to assemble a digital picture that can then be analysed by a specialist or intelligent diagnostic software.
‘Anybody who can prepare a slide can use the technology.’
Mika Kuisma, CEO, Grundium
Red, green and blue
The Grundium digital scanning microscope makes high resolution scans of a tissue sample – done separately in red, green and blue light – which can then be combined to analyse samples at different layers, as well as maximise the resolution and level of detail.
The digital images can be displayed on any device with an internet connection and a web browser, for analysis onsite or shared online to be studied anywhere in the world. The system produces images in a range of digital formats compatible with sophisticated diagnostics applications that can recognise patterns of infection or signatures of disease, such as cancer, which can sometimes be missed by even the best-trained human eye.
Intelligent diagnostics is a major growth area in digital medicine, given a global shortage of pathologists and the increased need for tissue analysis – as demonstrated by the explosion in demand for such expertise in the global Covid-19 pandemic.
Grundium’s approach is to develop and combine hardware, optics and software to work together, chief executive Mika Kuisma said, rather than adapting a conventional, analogue system to the digital world.
He estimates only about 20% of potential users such as pathology laboratories and small- or medium-sized clinics have access to digital scanning tools, and that bringing down the costs and size of the equipment can open the door wider to digital pathology.
‘We are trying to democratise the access to professional diagnostics services,’ said Kuisma, an engineer formerly at mobile telecommunications company Nokia.
‘The potential is enormous,’ he added, noting that the company sees a market of about 10,000 small- and medium-sized clinics or pathology laboratories just in Europe and North America and a global market of about €5 billion by 2023.
Once the samples have been scanned and their images saved and stored, all the necessary information is available for diagnosis, with no need to preserve or transport the original sample to a distant laboratory.

In a pilot of this approach, Grundium has worked with a clinic in rural Kenya since 2018 to diagnose cervical cancer. Clinic staff use the microscope to scan tissue samples and the images are then shared online to be instantly available for examination by a pathologist in Helsinki, Finland. By working with local health authorities, Kuisma believes the results will help patients get better treatment.
Grundium’s products are on the market for about €15,000, but Kuisma sees this coming down with economies of scale and expects to offer a product for less than €10,000 in the next few years. That compares with existing systems that can cost 20 times as much.
While that may still be out of reach for smaller clinics in developing countries, Grundium sees scope for collaboration in those circumstances with capable partners – and the possibility of special rates where the technology could be of benefit.
Sample preparation costs just a few cents, the same as for any optical microscope, and does not require a medical specialist, Kuisma said, adding that other potential applications include systems for use in veterinary medicine.
‘Anybody who can prepare a slide can use the technology,’ he added.
By putting the technology within the reach of clinics and small or medium-sized hospitals, he sees potential for linking patients with smart diagnostics and medical expertise that would otherwise be out of reach.
