Cherry peeks his head into your bedroom to see you sitting at the window.  Your hand cradling your bump while you looked outside.  Before, Robert had locked you in the house because he didn’t trust you, but now you choose to stay in on your own.  You take a second to glance back at him, giving him a pained smile, before you stare blankly outside again.

Cherry walks over to you slowly, sitting down on the bench, while his silvery blue eyes try to get your attention, “I’m fine.”

“No, you’re not.  You’re pregnant, you’re missing Freezy, and you’re becoming depressed,” you grimace shaking your head no, but now he had your attention.  “You can’t just stay here all day.”

“What’s there to do outside?”

“Anything, but sitting here.  Come on,” he reaches for your hand, but you shake him away.  Instead his hand goes to your bump, and he presses down on the swell.  

Things had been weird with Cherry since your moment.  A moment that you couldn’t forget.  It wasn’t even that you felt guilty for doing it.  There was video evidence of you with another man while Robert was in prison.  It was the fact that you liked it.  You liked Cherry being here too much.  Where Robert was loud and in your face, Cherry had a calm softness to him, but still so filthy.

“What are you doing?” You ask him as his hand roams around your belly.

“Looking for her.”

“Cherry,” you groan, leaning your head back.

“What?” He glares at you, but still his hand moves around.  “Someone’s got to touch her.  I know you want this baby, but you’re refusing to let yourself be connected with her.  Don’t feel guilty.  Robert will get out, and you need to have a bond with his daughter.”

You hold your head back straight, watching Cherry determined to find your unnamed baby.  He was staring so sweetly, but he wasn’t trying hard.  He wanted you to show him where she was.  You sigh, moving his hand over to where she was located, in fact she was kicking on your rib cage.  “She’s acting like her father.”

“Don’t I know,” you wince out.  Your daughter being a bit abusive already.  “I don’t know what we’re gonna do with her if she comes out acting like him.  You think he wants her?”

“I don’t think,” his hand moves from your belly to cupping your cheek, and you take a deliberate breath.  It was that tingly feeling you felt when it was just you and him.  But you missed Robert, and you try to push that warm glow coming from him away.  “I know for a fact he wants her.  I make sure he gets the ultrasound photos, and the updates.  He’s coming home.”

“This is all my fault,” Cherry’s thumb rubs under your eye, wiping off a stray tear.  “If it wasn’t for me…”

“If it wasn’t for Paul.  He’s the one that got you in this mess.  And then — you fell,” Cherry removes his hand off your face, and stands up.  His long fingers brush his pants down, and he holds a hand out to you, “Let’s go for a walk.”

“I don’t want to.”

“Baby Girl, if you stay here, I will have you like I did a few days ago,” biting your tongue you quickly look out the window.  “Fine, ignore it.  Ignore what’s happening here.”

“I love Robert!” You turn back to him.  While your face turns up in anger, your voice is soft, and lacks conviction.

“Didn’t say you didn’t.”

“And I feel like we betrayed him.”

“Exactly.  We.  And let’s not kid ourselves, when Robert left me to take care of you and her, he knew this would happen.  He knows how fucking horny we are.  It’s not like we hadn’t fucked before.”

“He was always present though!  Somehow that makes this feel worse,” Cherry’s head moves back and forth, and he starts to walk away.  “Cherry.  Chris!” He stops, but keeps his back to you.  “I love him.”

“I get it.  You don’t have room to love someone else,” he continues to walk out your bedroom, and you pout.  Ever since that time with Cherry, you have thought about it.  Things changed in that moment, and it was the heat of the moment.  Now you were left with too many scenarios of Robert leaving you, and that couldn’t happen.

But every time he walked away from you, you felt empty.  While your feelings were conflicting, you felt more at ease with Cherry present.  And Cherry was becoming very in tune with your body.  It was like he knew what you needed before you ever did.

Things hadn’t been easy since coming into Robert’s life.  Letting a web of lies and deception turn into something beautiful, and in a weird raunchy way, pure.  Cherry was the heart of that, and you just couldn’t let him go.

Cherry lies awake in his bed.  He was upstairs, and far away from yours and Robert’s room.  He wasn’t sure what he wanted.  He knew he had strong feelings for you, and since that time of just you and him, he couldn’t get it off his mind.  It was a raw and heated moment, but there was a desperate need to try it again, but take his time.  Let him explore your changing body.

He grunts knowing that it most likely wouldn’t happen.  You were stubborn, but also right.  It felt wrong betraying Robert like that.  He looks over towards his door when he hears a familiar squeak.  Your head peeks in through his door, and you give him a soft smile, “Cherry, I can’t sleep.”

“Come here,” he opens his blanket, and lets you crawl in.  Your swollen belly bumps on his hard abs, and Cherry looks down at your belly, letting his fingers rub over your engorged stomach.  You pet your hand over his face, and give him a cheeky grin, “What?”

“Robert will be gone for a while.”

“I know.”

“We’ve had sex before,” he whispers out I know again.  You can’t believe you were even entertaining this idea.  It was absurd, but you also didn’t feel too guilty about it.  “What if…I don’t know, maybe you and I…”

“If you want us to do anything, you better be able to ask me.”

“I just don’t want to be growing this little girl alone.  We don’t have to have sex,” he stifles out a laugh, and nods his head, “But I’m not saying we can’t either.  I want things to be organic.”

“And when Robert returns?” He doesn’t know what he would like to hear from you.  On the one hand he mostly would be invited back into your bed.  Since the two of them had destroyed you, there were a few times that Cherry wasn’t there.  He had become a part of your unit, in a way.

“Then we go back to how they were,” Cherry nods his head.  It was better than nothing.  He would still get to bask in your glory.  But would it ever be enough?  Just your cunt and not your heart.  “And maybe keep this a secret from Robert?”

“Okay,” he responds, closing his eyes.

“What are you doing?”

“I’m tired.”

“And I’m horny.”

“Then I suggest you crawl on top of me, Baby Girl.  I’m not doing anything, and this sweet girl always seems to get in the way,” his hand moves to your belly, and your eyes flutter close.  You don’t know why, but there was something so comforting and loving with the way he rubbed over your daughter’s current resting place.  “What are you going to name her?”

“What do you think?  I haven’t really thought about it.”

“Not thought…your mama is mean,” he playfully talks to your belly.  “Since she hasn’t thought about it, what about Sundae?  Like the dessert.”

“She’d have a name that incorporates you and Robert,” god you were beautiful when you smiled.  He had never had the privilege of seeing your eyes well up with tears, feeling overjoyed in that moment.  It was one of the more simpler things about Cherry.  A calmness that Robert very rarely possessed.  “I love it.  Miss Sundae Pronge, I think that your…that your sweet Cherry Pop has given you the perfect name.”

You gulp as you look at him.  His eyes close slowly, and he lets you think for a moment.  Your close proximity was not making things easy on you.  Wanting to be loyal to Robert, when every part of you was screaming that Cherry was here, too.  You didn’t think that loving two people was possible, so you decided on loving Robert.  Denying any feelings you were developing for Cherry, because it just wasn’t possible.

Cherry picks up your whimpering little girl out of her bassinet.  Laying her body on his bare chest.  He was always topless now.  Sundae loved skin on skin with him, and it was another thing that made you feel guilty concerning Robert.  Cherry was getting all these bonding moments with Sundae when it should be her father.

But even you couldn’t deny how adorable the two looked together.  He never hesitated to help you with Sundae, and you felt your heart breaking in pieces each time.  There was no way you could love two people.  And the thought of bringing that up to Robert, and being honest with him, terrified you.  

You had to suppress those feelings, no matter how adorable that man looked smiling down at your daughter.  It didn’t matter that seeing him walk around topless had you ready to drop to your knees, and beg him to have his way with you.  Cherry was always attractive, but holding a baby, he became downright perfect.  It was frustrating.

Cherry loved these moments.  He couldn’t get enough of the perfect angel, and he couldn’t ever remember wanting kids, but Sundae was amazing.  The sweetest little sleeping beauty that he had ever seen.  She was the most comfortable snuggled up on his chest.  He had told himself that he would let you navigate whatever was going on between the two of you, and yet you never did.  

You had offered him the excuse of needing to talk to Robert, to which he assumed you were just avoiding the situation all together.  So instead, he becomes the uncle and father figure that Sundae needed right now, until Robert could come home.  And when he did, he had to get out of here.  Had to meet new people, because he didn’t know if he could just have sex with you.  Share you with Robert with no feelings involved, because there were too many now.  Cherry loved you, and you didn’t reciprocate that.  He couldn’t handle seeing you with Robert, and just using him for fun.

He’d be here for however long you needed him for Sundae, but he had to pull away.  He was only fooling himself for thinking that this could ever work out.  Sundae opens her mouth up wide in a yawn, and he had never seen something more adorable.  She was beautiful just like you, but he had to remind himself that she wasn’t his, and he was certain that when Robert came home, even his relationship with this little angel was going to change.  He was going to be heartbroken in so many directions.  And he didn’t know if he could ever have someone that could compare to you.

Swallows at Dawn

Summary: Further continuation of the Lt series. You can read part one, Queen of Swords, here and part two, Never Falter, Never Fail, here. Destroyer!Chris being soft after the nightmares have faded. 

Who: Destroyer!Chris x reader

Word count: 1,280

Warnings: Swearing, PTSD, flashbacks, mentions of blood, nightmares.

Authors Note: This begins as angst but I promise it has a good ending. I did not serve in the USMC, but my husband did. I consulted with him about parts of this story so I could stay as true as possible to actual realities of deployment and PTSD. This is one of the hardest things I’ve written thus far and honestly I’m damn proud of it. Anything in italics is part of the nightmare. Much love y’all. Allie.

It’s just routine. Walk the same road, just farther down than you went yesterday. You and your team clearing the way so the medical convoy can get from base to a small village in desperate need of supplies. You wanted to go farther yesterday but you’d lost the light.

It’s not safe they said.

Don’t they know it’s never safe? It’s war. There is no such thing as safe in war.

You linger towards the back. You allow your dog to go a bit farther to the side of the road. He’s the most experienced, you should probably be leading but you prefer to double-check.

Just in case.

You pull once on the leash, he comes trotting back to you. Your fingers dig into the fur behind his ears, grounding you back to the task at hand.

There is no warning. It happens too fast for a shouted signal. Just the white-hot burst of flame and darkness.

It’s the sound of your thrashing that wakes Chris first. He bolts upright, his left hand going for the pistol on the bedside table. Even before his eyes adjust to the predawn gloom, the sight is trained on the door.

Silence.

He can’t help but wonder what he heard.

Your sense of smell returns first. There is a distinct scent in the air. The eye-watering, throat burning scorch of hot metal and burning rubber. There is no sound but the hollow ringing in your ears. Your skin feels like it’s being flayed from your bones. The blistering sensation of flesh that’s burnt. You’re pretty sure there is blood dripping from your scalp. You attempted to scrub your face before opening your eyes. Whatever it is, it’s mixing with the sand to create a gritty paste.

There is so much blood on your hands. The bright red looks almost fake, too garish in the sunlight, almost like a gruesome prop. But this is all too real.

You don’t know if it’s all yours.

And then the screaming starts. Horrible, gut-wrenching, terror-filled. As he turns back to the other bed, and the gun falls from his hand onto the mattress. Back arched, hands fisted into the sheets, your body contorts.

“Shit.” He jumps from his bed and onto yours.  Straddling your legs and grabbing your shoulders, he almost shocked by how soaked in sweat you are in the chilly room. He pulls you close, cradling you into his arms and against his chest.

“C’mon sweetheart. I’m here. You’re here. You’re not there.” He’s not exactly sure where you are but he has a good guess.

Your eyes fly open as you try to fight free from his grip. Heart pounding, you’re still half trapped in the nightmare dreamscape of your memories but his arms hold you tight.

There is no sound in the room but the muffled sounds of a tv in the room next to yours and your own ragged breathing.

“You back?”

You nod, too broken to care that he saw what you’ve hidden from everyone. Your nighttime secret. Normally you take medication to sleep. Little white pills that keep the demons at bay, but the medic advised against it tonight after your brush with heatstroke earlier in the day. They’d wanted to keep you overnight at the naval hospital at Camp Pendleton and you’d refused. Too many memories in that place. You’d argued until Chris offered to let you stay with him. He could keep an eye on you he’d reasoned. You’d only accepted when he mentioned there were two beds. Despite your odd history with him, you weren’t willing to share a bed. He considers as he pulls on jeans. “Food first. Further distracting later. I have a late checkout. I mean…” his handsome face is suddenly unsure.
