A rather large tree toppled in a storm in May, revealing that the center had rotted through. I drew the stump from a photo taken at the beginning of November, the stump filled with fallen leaves and two clumps of new growth sprouting on the right.
Still reading The White Mosque by Sofia Samatar. From page 147: "I want to go with you, but I can't share your splendid distance, the way you cast a sorrowful eye over history as if from the top of a peak. I can't turn to the men of color the way you do, with your refined, delicate, patronizing nostalgia, because the men of color are Dad and Uncle Togane boiling tea on the kitchen stove. To turn to the men of color is to see the kitchen of my childhood, the kerosene heater squatting on the pale green linoleum. If only I could persuade you to glance in this mirror! For Dad and Uncle Togane are much like you, Kini: they belong to your tribe of wanderers, poets, and voluntary exiles, people who long for something else, a something forever receding, who live bold, undisciplined, experimental lives."

Repost from @bnplit @TopRankRepost #TopRankRepost “A book,” says Vandos of Ur-Amakir, “is a fortress, a place of weeping, the key to a desert, a river that has no bridge, a garden of spears.” • • • @blacknerdproblems blacknerdproblems fave and author @backthatelfup talked about how much she loved this book when she first read it in her newsletter so of course one of us had to check it out! Already just three chapters in and I just love the very poetic writing style of the author. 😍Plus. It. Came. With. A.
