Throwback Thursday to this skate painting called “Peru Unido”, which I did after a trip I did down here in 2006. Back then I still had a lot of wounds from growing up in Lima. One of my biggest issues was the racism that exists here. I don’t particularly identify as my race (white man?) but people here would either treat me better or worse based on that superficial detail. That is why I painted shaking hands of different pigmentation, as a symbol of us getting over that unnecessary division. I think things are getting better though, especially after 1 million Venezuelans immigrated and created more genetic diversity. At the bottom of the piece I also painted Peruvians I’m proud of like former world champion of surfing @smulanovich and my friend former skate national champion @albertomontesk8 , surrounded by a bunch of pre-Colombian symbols and mysticism. I Love Peru and have faith it will continue to mature, evolve and grow, despite all the bad role models in the government and other issues we have.
