You're not sure what you're seeing at first. They look like people, but they're…wrong. You can see where they look like people, and where they look like something else. It's like something has taken root and grown inside, bending and breaking the shell to suit its needs. There's at least 3 of them slithering towards you, slipping out of rubble and shambling around. Some of their noises sound like groans, some like creaks, some like hisses. You can hear the joints cracking and squelching unnaturally as they walk. Your stomach tightens instantly and you step back anxiously. They continue to close in, reaching out fingers, spines and tendrils at you. Your mind is racing a mile a minute, screaming at you to run, but you're frozen in place. It takes what feels like minutes for your body to catch up, but it does. And you turn and run.

As you run for your life, panting and sweating, tripping over yourself and fumbling, you momentarily curse yourself for being afraid to take the pistol from the hatch. A pocket knife isn't nearly enough to handle something like this. How could you be so stupid?! You can hear them behind you. Their unnatural movements make them unusually capable of crossing the ruined landscape. You're not sure how long you can evade them. Heresy didn't say anything about this! Did she lie? You can't believe you fell for the trap and became corrupted by Otherside. You're going to die, and all because you let yourself be persuaded by its influence. You start to cry. The tears mix with your already messy appearance from the dirt, grime and sweat. They're catching up, you can hear them getting closer. You trip over an overturned chunk of asphalt and collapse. You look up at the monsters. They slow down, knowing their prey is vulnerable, and creep forward towards you. You close your eyes and brace for the end. You hear them leap forward, and…You open one eye. They're all frozen in the air, like the world just paused. Quickly, you go from fear to confusion. After a moment, a hand grasps your shoulder and you hear a familiar voice behind you. "Close your eyes, Sofia." You scrunch them shut. As soon as you do you hear the horrendous cracking and squelching of bodies breaking and being crushed, and then a number of heavy impacts all around you. "It's ok now, kid." You open your eyes and look around. There's still dust and debris flying from the bodies of the monsters being launched in all directions. You look up, nervous and confused, and see the face of your guide this entire journey. "Heresy?" She smiles and extends her hand. "Yeah. Let me help you up." You get a good look at her as you stand back up with her help. She's pretty. She has soft features despite her lanky body and nervous demeanor. There's an undeniable air of awkwardness about her, but confidence as well. Her long hair is tangled and frizzy and she's wearing simple, loose clothing. "We need to get back to home base. The more noise we make, the more attention we're going to attract." Without even asking she scoops you up into her arms. You yelp a little in surprise but let her. It's surprising how strong she is despite her thin body. But you're even more surprised when she leaps into the air far faster and higher than any human possibly could. She launches herself forward and hops over the ruined landscape, flying like a natural. It's hardly natural for you, but you can't muster the energy to ask her why or how this is even remotely possible. Heresy seems to be aware of that much, though. "I know you've got a lot of questions, but once we're safe I'll answer them all."

Eventually she stops her relentless and quick run across the apocalyptic wasteland and starts to walk more calmly and steadily, and sets you down. "Come on, we're almost there." You walk together into a ruined and overgrown building, reduced practically to just concrete. You're not really sure what's so special about it. But Heresy continues to walk forward confidently and opens a slanted metal door built into the wall. Behind it is an angled tunnel illuminated by cage lamps. "Apollo built these bunkers as a backup plan. We've been finding and repurposing them." She waves you forward and you comply, stepping down the tunnel. Heresy followed behind, closing the door behind her. "There's something important we have to do before we get too much further into explaining the situation," she says, and jogs ahead of you a bit. "Just follow me." You walk through several rooms. They're illuminated with warm, dim bulbs that flicker a little. The walls are bare concrete with just a tiny amount of decoration. Heresy waves you into a small room and sits you down in a chair. You look around. There's a small set of cabinets nearby with a sink on top. She starts washing her hands. "I know it might sound odd, but I need to draw a little blood." Turning around, she draws a needle and starts to dab at your forearm with a small wipe. "It won't hurt, promise." You nod, albeit a bit nervously. She holds your hand with one hand and carefully pushes the needle in with the other. You wince a little, but she's right, it's not very painful. After a moment she retracts the needle and gingerly applies a bandage. "It'll take some time to analyze the sample, but it's OK, we need some time to talk anyway." She gestures towards the door and you stand and follow.

The two of you walk back through the bunker, and you take note of the prying eyes of people. It makes you anxious, even with Heresy's air of confidence. The watchful eyes of the people staying here don't seem actively malicious, rather curious. She hands off the filled syringe to someone and looks back at you. "Let's go to my room. We deserve some privacy, I think."

CHARACTER DETAILS

The Alvarez siblings were plucked from a life of struggling paycheck to paycheck to the glitz and glamour of the Upper East Side thanks to the sacrifices of their parents Matteo and Yennifer Alvarez. Matteo earned a scholarship to Columbia University and worked his ass off to graduate at the top of his class and work his way up the ladder of Wall Street while Yennifer was a couple boroughs away taking care of their growing family by running an at-home day care business on top of working nights at a bodega. 

Nadia was five when the family left the Bronx for Manhattan and for all intents and purposes the family adjusted quickly to their new lifestyle, mostly because they had to in order to avoid becoming outcasts. They were the Cinderella story of New York City. Tabloids and newspapers loved to retell the tale of how they went from rags to riches. For eleven years they lived in a bubble of happiness. The hard times, they thought, were finally over and now they would be able to live the rest of their lives in peace. Only, Matteo Alvarez had other plans. 

Unbeknownst to the other family members Matteo had started up an affair with Nadia’s ballet instructor. They were sneaking around everyone’s backs for almost four years before she accidentally got knocked up and Matteo made the decision to “do right” by her. Turns out his version of doing right by his mistress meant doing wrong by his wife and children because he served Yennifer with divorce papers before she even had time to process the affair. Then he lawyered up and made sure he wouldn’t have to pay her a penny in alimony or child support. 

Just as quickly as Nadia and her siblings were plucked out of poverty, they were thrust back into it by the hands of their father. Nadia was seventeen at the time of this ugly divorce and to combat the embarrassment and hurt inflicted on them by Matteo, Yennifer chose to take her children to the otherside of the country. Away from New York City to an island off the coast of California, Catalina Island. 

Yennifer’s mother ( the kids know her as Nana Rosa ) was pretty much the only family member willing to accept them with open arms to help them get back on their feet. Her new husband Henry Joseph ( granny met him on a cruise ship & they were had been married about a year ), was just as happy to have them as she was. If not more. Henry had never had his own children so he embraced Yenny like the daughter he’d never gotten and her children like the grandchildren he’d always wanted. 

When Nadia was eighteen she got into Parsons and returned back to New York City cause she hadn’t been a big fan of the move ( she missed her friends & life back in nyc ) but she eventually moved back to the West Coast after being run out of the city a second time shortly after her wedding. She’s been living in Los Angeles for the last couple of years but recently moved back to the island & is crashing with her mother until she lands on her feet again. Whether the siblings have stayed in Catalina since their mom first relocated all those years ago or returned to NYC / lived elsewhere since is up to players but I imagine they all are back on the island once again much to the pleasure of their mother and grandmother! 

EXTRAS

They are loud, rowdy, opinionated bunch who will always let you know when they think you’re wrong but they are tight knit too. To see all four of them together is to truly understand what the term ride or die means. They don’t always get along but they would go to the ends of the earth for each other. Nadia loves her siblings, she practically helped to raise the younger two. They mean the world to her and she likely wouldn’t have survived being run out of New York City twice if it wasn’t for them.

1: Marvel or DC?OH. Marvel? But I really like DC.Honestly, I just really really like X-Men and Harley Quinn & Co.… But I love spiderman.

2: Do you have any siblings?I have a brother who is a loveable pain. He is not a potato.

3: Do you watch anime subbed or dubbed?Generally subbed–the voices and mouth movements make more sense. There are some exceptions to this rule though.  

4: How old are you?Eighteen. Unfortunately, that makes me an adult in the UK but I am less adult than other people I know.

5: What is your favorite sport?To play? LOL none. I am an indoor cat. I love nature and the outdoors but I appreciate it more from the otherside of the window.To watch? F1, ice skating, uh idk I barely even watch those. I always watch the superbowl too but I never actually pay attention to it. Same goes for the World Cup or Olympics.

6: Favorite soda/beverage?Tea. Coffee. Hot Chocolate. Coconut water/milk. Iced tea (but not most of the kinds people try to give you in the UK). LEMONADE BUT NOT SODA THE REAL KIND GET IT RIGHT ENGLAND. If I have to drink soda, then coke.

7: What is your favorite tv show?Oh god. Gosh um maybe from my 2nd birthday but its hazy and I’m not sure if I’ve partially made it up by accident from dreams & pictures.But I’m wearing this party hat and I’m grumpy because the elastic is bothering my chin and we’re in the garden in the sun so I’m already a little irritated. We used to have these small animal statues around the garden–kind of like garden gnomes–and and we had these three little rabbit statues. One big one and two baby ones.(Side note: rabbits are like a thing in my family. My parents are “Mr. & Mrs. Bunny”, they sign all their cards and gifts that way and call each other “honey-bunny”. Its gross. In a really cute way. Basically, we’re the “bunny family”.)Right, so I was two and vaguely not happy. At my backyard birthday party with some friends and lots of adults. I did what any reasonable two-year-old Rachel would do. I went over to the larger bunny statue, whispered that I wanted cake and I didn’t like my hat. Then I kissed the top of its head.I still have not lived it down and there’s a picture.

You sit at your desk and other students steadily trickle in, some still chatting. You can't say you're too interested, though. You just sit quietly and unpack your backpack. You carefully pull out your pencil case and notebook and sit them on your desk. Your teacher doesn't take long after that to arrive and the class naturally settles down as she sits at her desk and greets you, then starts taking names.

"Sofia Gardener," she asks? You put your hand up. "Present." She nods and ticks your name off the list and continues down. You sit and wait and fiddle with your pencil. Eventually she wraps up the list and stands up. "Today we're going to continue learning about Luna's history and how we were blessed as a people to be free of Otherside's corruption, and to do that we're going to step out of the classroom and I'll show you all the murals in our halls and teach you about them. Make sure to bring your notebooks and pencils so that you can study the material later." She walks to the door and the students all file into line. You follow suit and grab your notebook, tucking a pencil above your ear.

One by one you're ferried out into the hall and brought to the front of the school. Your teacher stands behind the first image in the mural and your group clusters into a small group in front of it. "This is where everything began," she starts, gesturing at the planet portrayed in colored tiles on the floor. It's a beautiful, lush planet covered in nothing but blues and greens. "We were created by God here, in Eden, with all of God's other creations, including the angels." She points at the edges of the planet which are surrounded by Angelic figures dressed in all white robes. "The angels were supposed to help God create and oversee the universe, but the first 9 tried to rebel, led by their figurehead, Lucifer."

As she speaks she walks backwards and gestures at the next mural, depicting 9 figures with black wings, albeit still wearing white. The cluster of students follows suit, maintaining distance and allowing the mural to remain in view. "Lucifer and the fallen angels spread their corruption throughout Eden, attempting to demonstrate humanity's fallibility and the failure of God's sense of morals. Much of humanity surrendered to temptation and became corrupt." The mural beneath her feet depicts the planet, once lush and green, now being changed to black and red. "However, some of humanity stayed strong and resisted the influence of Lucifer, and stood as proof against their morale. God rewarded this faith and strength of will by sparing them when the rest of the corrupt humanity and the fallen angels were smited, and Eden became our world, Luna. And the smited ones went…" she points down at the final mural, depicting 2 planets orbiting each other, "here. Otherside."

You look down at the image depicted in tiles. Luna has remained colorful and bright, but in contrast, Otherside is depicted in blacks and grays with small hints of brown and tan. "We retain our faith and redouble our wills every day to thank God for his kindness, and to ensure that we don't waste the holy land gifted to us. That's why we have to strive to be good above all else. Does anyone have any questions?" You continue to stare down at the mural and write notes as someone asks, "what happened to the people who went to Otherside?" "We don't know exactly," your teacher says. "Our books say that they attempted to build their own society on Otherside, but we simply can't check to see if that's true." "Why can't we see," another asks? "If we showed interest in Otherside it's possible that it would only be so long before its influence reached us again. God gifted us a peaceful life and spared us because of our refusal to listen to Lucifer. That's why it's important not to investigate it." You look down at your notebook and realize just how little of your notebook pages are covered in notes, and instead have been dominated by doodles. You stare at them for a moment. You're so lost in thought that you jump a little when the lunch bell rings. "Ah, time for lunch break everyone. Meet me back at the classroom in 30 minutes," your teacher says.
