5 reasons why you should install uPVC windows and doors
As a material for window and door installation, uPVC is a popular choice due to its affordability, low maintenance, good insulating capabilities, and modern, clean appearance.
uPVC windows and doors are known for being a high quality product delivering protection and peace of mind, not to mention a tremendous amount of variety - in terms of colour, style, and texture - to fit all sorts of properties, tastes, and budgets. Because of its low cost in comparison to hardwood timber and aluminium solutions, uPVC - also known as unplasticised polyvinyl chloride and PVCu - is one of the most popular choices on the windows and doors market.
What is uPVC, exactly?
Polyvinyl chloride, a chemical compound composed of carbon, chlorine, and hydrogen, was initially created in the 1930s and has been used to make window sills and frames for industrial usage on a wide scale for the last fifty years or so. It is also used for drainpipes, guttering, soffits, and fascias.
PVC is one of the most common commodity polymers, coming in second only to polyethylene. Aside from the low cost, maybe what makes uPVC so appealing to many is its insulating capabilities. When compared to wood and aluminium, uPVC is a far greater insulator.
The Benefits of uPVC Windows and Doors
The purchase of uPVC doors and windows for your home is a long-term investment that provides numerous benefits, some of which are as follows:
Variety is the spice of life, and there are plenty of alternatives when it comes to finding the perfect uPVC windows and doors. There will be a style of uPVC windows or doors to precisely complement your property, whether you are searching for casement or sash uPVC windows, French doors or sliding patio doors.
Quality - uPVC doors and windows require little maintenance and are both sturdy and lasting. They are also resistant to the environment, which means they will not fade or decay like wood or rust like aluminium.
Value - As a material, uPVC offers good value, and windows and doors made of this material are less expensive than those made of wood or metal, making them a cost-effective option.
Energy efficient - Installing uPVC windows or doors will help to increase the energy efficiency of your home. They cut down on heat loss, draughts, and noise.
Recyclable - Because it can be reformed at high temperatures, the material can be recycled. Recycling garbage minimises the amount of rubbish sent to landfill.
uPVC windows and doors were once only available in white; however, top manufacturers such as Eurocell and Veka are now able to offer products in a number of colours, styles, and patterns, including a wood-effect finish. White plastic, on the other hand, remains a popular choice among homeowners.
Whatever type of uPVC windows and doors you require, Windows Guide has registered firms around the UK offering supply and installation services to fulfil your requirements. Fill out the quote form today to get up to three quotes.
Heritage Install’s is the right choice for home improvements in Stockport and Surrounding areas.

Insulation Installers Manchester
Tumblr media
When you live in the Northeast, you learn that home insulation is a very important part of your home. Not only can it keep your home at a comfortable, even temperature, but it can also help you save money on your energy bills. While you may already think your home is insulated, there are several areas that insulation installers Manchester recommend considering adding insulation:
Attic Access Door
Even if your attic has sufficient insulation, you’ll want to make sure your attic door has it too. Attics get cold during the winter months, and whether your door is built into the ceiling or is a walk-in door, it can easily let that cold air out into the rest of your home. Insulate it properly and you’ll eliminate cold drafts and keep surrounding rooms warmer.
Cantilevers
While cantilevered floors are a great way to give your home some character, you have to remember that they sit beyond the exterior wall below. This means they don’t receive any warmth from the room below and can get cold. Installing insulation between the floorboards and the exterior-facing soffit can help protect the floors from cold outside temperatures.
Ceilings/Walls Next to Cold Spaces
Ceilings and walls that are adjacent to a cold space (such as an attic, a garage, or a crawl space) may require extra insulation in order to protect the room from the colder temperatures next to it. Consider extra insulation especially if the room is one you spend a lot of time in.
Joist Spaces
Many older homes don’t have insulation between their first and second levels, which allows air to easily flow from one floor to another. By installing insulation underneath the floorboards between the spaces of your home’s joists, however, you can reduce airflow and regulate the overall temperature of your home more easily.

Prater lands major envelope package in Manchester
Prater has been selected by Lendlease as the specialist envelope contractor to deliver high performance curtain walling, glazing and a roofing package for Manchester Goods Yard.
The Manchester Goods Yard development will provide a total of 31,000m2 of commercial space, including 28,000m2 of workspace and 3,000m2 of retail space across three, distinctive interlinked building blocks.
Prater will be providing a roofing and envelope package, which includes curtain walling, rainscreen cladding, undercrofts and soffits.
Tumblr media
To plan and execute the works to a strict schedule, Prater is adopting offsite construction methods in partnership with supply chain partners Kawneer and Interpane, who are supplying the curtain walling and the glass units.
Works are scheduled to commence in April beginning with the offsite installation of windows into pre-cast concrete panels that will see at least 20 units per week completed to meet the demanding schedule of works.
William Morrison, Associate Operations Director for Prater said: “Time is critical on this project, to ensure each stage is completed to schedule.
Tumblr media
“In the very early stages, we satisfied the architects and the main contractor that our offsite capabilities would ensure the project meets the desired schedule, without any delays, in a safe and timely manner.
“For our clients, it is important they trust us to complete the project without health and safety risks. By using our offsite expertise, we are able to minimise any risk, as floor to ceiling height windows can be installed and glazed at ground level, in a semi-unitised format, eliminating the risk of falls from height and negating the requirement for leading edge protection from Floors 1-7 of the building.
This ensures safety of operatives, and a high quality installation.”

Everything You Need to Know About Roof Wind Damage Repair in South Windsor CT
When the weather gets chilly after summer's warmth, you can expect the instability to cause hurricanes and cyclones. Unfortunately, in South Windsor CT, these sometimes evolve into strong-winded rainstorms that can uproot roofing material and afterwards require intensive roof wind damage repair.
The repair procedure for roof wind damage is similar to any and all existing processes. However, as any experienced and knowledgeable South Windsor CT roofing contractor knows, identifying the full details of the roof's condition is the key to proper roof wind damage repair. Dry Home has an excellent list of areas to inspect below.
Perform an Outdoor Inspection
Look for missing and damaged shingles (damaged shingles might be curled, cracked, or torn) on your roof or around your property. If this type of damage is localized (i.e., it covers less than 30 percent of the entire roof), roofing repairs might be able to address the problem. More extensive damage might necessitate roof replacement. Also keep in mind that not only the roof itself, but the chimney, ventilation pipes, roof flashing, gutters and fencing can also become damaged. Be sure to inspect them for damage as well. If you suspect that your roof is damaged, here is a basic list of what to look for:
Composition shingles: curling, loss of granulation, broken, damaged or missing shingles
Wood shingles/shakes: Mold or decay, splitting or curling
Flat roof: Obvious patches, cracks or tears, several blisters and/or wrinkles (also check patched areas from inside the attic)
Flashing: Tears, buckling around roof penetrations
Roofing cement: Excess cement, crumbling
Soffits and fascia: Decay, stains
Soffit and ridge vents: Clogged or damaged vents, flashing and shingles around them curling or missing
Gutters: Decay or rust, leaky seams, loosely attached to structure, bent or sagging, missing sections of gutter or downspout, filled with debris. Clogged gutters can easily freeze shut and cause excessive weight on gutter fasteners, ice dam conditions, and slippery walks below.
Chimneys: Leaning, loose or missing flashing, damaged bricks, cap or cracked joints. Chimney flashing is especially prone to tearing because a chimney settles independently from the house. (Continued)
Prevention is always better than any cure, and it's less expensive too. Preventative measures to reduce or even eliminate material uprooting and eventual roof wind damage repair exist. However, it begins right at the start -- the moment your architect designs your roof and the roofing contractor installs it in place.
Roof design plays an integral role in preventing strong winds from blowing off a roof. Fortunately, the roof design doesn't have to make your roof installation expensive to resist strong winds. LSU AG Center has a good list of roof design characteristics that can resist strong winds.
Roof Wind Damage Repair Prevention: Design considerations
youtube
Hip roof style: Hip roofs (four-sided roof design) are more aerodynamic and inherently more resistant to uplift forces of high wind than gable end and other roof designs.
Gable end walls braced: If your home has a gable roof (two-sided pitched roof), the end wall takes a beating during a hurricane, and typical framing methods create a vulnerable “hinge” line at the joint between levels. If not properly braced, it can collapse. Properly bracing gable end walls can prevent wind from pushing or pulling the gable end at that weak point. In new construction, this can be provided with code-specified bracing details – which may include lateral bracing and blocking of ceiling joists, extra metal strapping, structural panels under the joists and sometimes cross bracing of ceiling to roof framing.
A simpler alternative to bracing is to use a “balloon framing” method for gable end walls; this refers to using continuous studs or columns from the foundation to the roof without a break. This method is less labor intensive, but tall spans may need larger lumber or closer spacing than for other walls. (Continued)
However, the roof design is only 50% of the preventative measures you can take to prevent roof wind damage repair. Using the right materials allow you to clamp down your roof deck with their weight and density.
Luckily, these roofing materials are available from any supplier, and they're not too expensive. Traditional asphalt shingle roofing is one of the best wind-resistant materials to prevent costly roof wind damage repair. Goodrich Roofing has a list of the best materials below.
Roofing Materials Resistant to Roof Wind Damage
Asphalt Shingles
The most common type of residential roofing in the country, asphalt shingles are used in over 90% of U.S. homes. Available in different styles and colors, these roofing materials are tested to perform well against fires and storms. In fact, the standard types can handle 60- to 80-mile-per-hour wind speeds while architectural shingles can withstand winds of up to 110 miles per hour.
Metal
This roofing material offers better resistance to wind damage, minimal upkeep and longer lifespans. It can perform well in any weather, regardless of severity. Installation requirements call for fewer sheets, which reduces the likelihood of wind passing through openings within the roofing system. (Continued)
Remember, preventative measures that avoid costly roof wind damage repair require the use of an experienced and knowledgeable roofing professional. If you have yet to find a reliable roofer, you can count on Slavin Home Improvements to help. With over 10 years of roofing experience and serving residential properties across South Windsor CT, we're confident in delivering what you need. Allow our team to help -- call us today!
