Part 51 [Soldagand x Carly Masterlist]
“Ani? Can you translate something for me?” Carly asked Aniketos. The two were perched on a boulder, waiting for Soldagand at their agreed meeting spot.
“Perhaps," Ani said. "What language is it in?”
“I’m not sure," the mage explained with a shrug. "Soldagand won’t tell me what it means, and none of the Sofeans I’ve talked to seem to know either, so I’m thinking it must be some fae thing.”
Ani paused. “Soldagand won’t tell you?”
“Nope.”
“But he knows?” he asked quizzically.
“Mmhm.”
Aniketos was clearly perplexed. “Why is that?”
She shrugged. “Beats me. I’ve asked him a hundred times, but he just won’t.”
“Well, I can certainly give it a try. What is it?”
“The word indis," she said, doing her best to match Soldagand's pronunciation.
Ani raised his eyebrows. “Indis?”
“Mmhm," Carly nodded. "Do you know what it means?”
“Where did you hear this?” Ani asked cautiously.
“Sol calls me that all the time.”
Ani laughed and sighed. “Oh, dear... If Soldagand won’t tell you, perhaps I shouldn’t either.”
Carly's eyes widened. “What? Is... Is it bad?”
He couldn’t stand the look of worry on her face. “No! Of course not, dearest, I—" He took both her hands in his and let out a breath. “You know Soldagand is very fond of you.”
She nodded, squeezing his hands in return.
“And I am sure you know by now that you’re the only person he treats this way.”
Again, she nodded.
“Indis, my dear friend...” Ani paused and sighed to himself again, fully aware he would not be able to take back what he was about to say. “... means wife.”
Carly’s face slowly turned burgundy. “Wife?” she repeated, as if she had somehow misheard him.
He smiled sympathetically. “Or bride.”
She quickly dropped his hands to cover her mouth. “He’s been calling me his wife?” came her muffled squeak.
“Yes, little one. I’m afraid so.” The poor girl’s breathing had become rapid and shallow. She looked ready to faint. He was glad they'd already been sitting down. “Now, now, please, there is no need for all this,” he said quickly in an attempt to calm her. “You’ve known for quite some time that he loves you.”
“But— But— I thought dryads didn’t—“ she stuttered frantically.
“Well, no, dryads do not typically mate for life in the way that humans often do. And as such, there is no system in place for such unions. However, he certainly knows what it means, if that is your question. He has been around humans long enough.”
“I— I don’t understand! Why would he— I—“
Again, he took her hands. “He seems rather determined to keep that to himself, seeing as he’s speaking in a language no human can understand. He hasn’t said it around me, and I am sure Alora would have made a fuss if he’d said it around her. You know she loves to tease him about how fond he is of you.”
”That can’t be right," she insisted. "I— I must have said it wrong.”
“If he calls you this as often as you claim, I doubt that, dear one. I believe it would be safe to assume he intends to keep you at his side for quite some time. Carly, he's put a ring on your finger. Surely this can't come as much of a surprise."
The leaves rustling behind them suddenly caught their attention. They whipped around to find Soldagand approaching. “Sorry to keep ya waitin’!” he called, ducking under a tree limb. “Got caught up in the village.” He looked from Carly’s embarrassed expression to Aniketos’s apologetic grin. “What?” he asked awkwardly. “What’d I miss?”
Ani let out a nervous laugh. “Our friend here had a question for me. She wanted something translated.”
It took a few seconds for the implications of Ani’s words to sink in. Soldagand's cheeks turned brown with blush. “Oh. D-darlin’, I—“ He sighed and sat next to her. "Oh, lord."
“I’m sorry, Soldagand,” Ani said. “She insisted.”
“Soldagand, tell him that’s not what you mean!” she pleaded.
“Sweetheart, I..." Soldagand looked to Aniketos for help, but received none. He had to be honest. "Yes, Carly. I've... I've been callin' you my wife. But just to myself, only to you, I--"
Before he could finish, she went limp.
“Shit!” Soldagand caught her as she toppled over to keep her from hitting the ground. "Sweetheart, I--" He quickly realized she had fainted.
“Soldagand, what were you thinking?” Aniketos scolded with a sigh.
“You’re the one who told her!” he argued.
“She was bound to find out someday! How long did you intend to keep this up?”
Sol groaned and set the girl in his lap. "I've gone and made a mess, haven't I?"
"Would you like me to give you two some privacy?" Ani asked.
"No, if you're gone when she comes to, she'll think I'm gonna propose or somethin'."
"Are you?" Ani teased.
"Watch it," Sol warned with a huff. "And no, I ain't."
"But you're considering it." Aniketos smiled.
"No, I ain't!" Sol's cheeks had darkened. "Hush, now, she's stirrin'."

Wedding
The one where there's a wedding in town and Soldagand wants me to come with him. The region of Sofea apparently has Scandinavian vibes so I went for a bunad sorta look since I think those are neat.
Part 10 [Soldagand/Carly Masterlist]
The four friends sat in what had been dubbed The Room. In reality, it was actually three rooms that existed within a pocket between the mortal realm and that of the fae. Aniketos had helped Carly create it after realizing the physical distance between him and Soldagand was too much for the poor human. He could tell how badly she missed him. Ani’s mirror trick could only supplement so much. Soldagand, embarrassed as he was to admit it, needed her in his arms every so often to assure himself that she was alright. Small, naive, mortal? He worried about her almost constantly. Needlessly, Ani always tried to remind him, as she was fully capable of taking care of herself, but it did little to ease the conifer’s nerves.
Once initial hugs were out of the way, which typically lasted several minutes between Sol and Carly to accommodate him fussing over her like a mother hen, Soldagand retrieved the box he had brought with him.
“What’s that?” Alora asked, eyeing it curiously.
“Chief’s daughter is getting married today,” Soldagand said. “Carly’s never been to a Sofean wedding before, so I’m takin’ her with me.”
”Never?” Alora repeated.
“I don’t even go to most of ‘em,” Sol explained, “but I’m real close with the girl’s father and he says it would mean a lot to her if I was there. Should be quite an event! I’ve met the groom; he’s a good guy. Moved to the village probably five years ago.”
Aniketos, ever entranced by human affairs, was naturally delighted. “Carly, you must tell me how you enjoy yourself. Soldagand has brought me along a few times. Sofean weddings are wonderful.”
“They’re pretty cute,” Sol chucked. “You’ve gotta look the part though, doll, which is what this is about. I borrowed this from one of the women in town. Her daughter wore it when she was younger.” He lifted the lid of the box as began sorting through its contents.
“What is it?” Carly asked.
“National costume.” He handed her a long-sleeve white blouse and a green vest that was attached to a long black wool skirt. “Put both of these on and then come back out. This part goes in front.”
Carly stepped into the side room to change, then re-emerged to a chorus of awws. Soldagand gazed at her adoringly. “Oh, darlin’,” he cooed. “You’re so cute! I don’t think I’ve ever seen you in a dress before. My goodness, I could just eat you right up!” He seized her waist and kissed her forehead.
“Soldagand,” she whined halfheartedly, pushing him away as she blushed and smiled.
“So could I,” Alora piped up, smirking playfully.
Carly’s face turned slightly pale.
“Alora!” Soldagand scolded. ”Cut it out, you’re gonna scare the poor thing!” He held the girl protectively against his chest.
“I’m joking, I’m joking!” she laughed. “I obviously don’t want to eat her! You’re so uptight.”
He grumbled to himself as he doted on Carly, adjusting her shirt sleeves until he was satisfied. “Alright, let me help you with the rest of it.” He walked off to retrieve the box from the table then returned to Carly. “Arms up.”
He took the apron out of the box and carefully wrapped it around her small waist. His deft fingers made quick work of the complicated knot. The embellished tails of the ties hung down in front.
“This might be a little tight,” he warned her. He picked the wide woven belt out of the box and wrapped it snuggly around her waist. “That alright?” he asked quietly. When she nodded, he tucked the tails of the belt into itself in the back. He knelt in front of her to more easily attach her cuff links, displaying a tenderness his companions rarely had the chance to see. His massive hands dwarfed hers as he delicately worked the small pieces of metal through the holes in her sleeves. Aniketos and Alora shared a knowing glance. There had always been a performative aspect to his affection, but it was moments like this that reminded them how deeply he truly cared for her.
Once the cuff links were secured, he stood and took the silver brooch in his hand. After brushing her hair out of the way, he carefully closed the top of her blouse. He picked the last item out of the box—a green kerchief of sorts. He considered it for a moment, glanced at her, seemingly decided against it, and let it drop back into the box.
“What’s that?” Carly asked.
“It’s a head covering. You’re technically supposed to wear it since you’re single, but...” He twisted one of her curls around his finger with a smirk. “I think it would be a shame to hide this gorgeous hair of yours, don’t you?”
She blushed and smiled. “I guess so.”
Alora caught Ani’s gaze and rolled her eyes. Ani skillfully stifled a laugh.
“Alright, give us a spin. I wanna see everything, make sure I did it all right,” Soldagand said. Carly slowly twirled in a circle to let him examine her clothing. He considered his work with a critical eye, ultimately seeming pleased. He gave her an adoring smile. “Oh, pumpkin...” Without another word, he lifted her off the ground and hugged her tightly. She wrapped her arms around his neck and squeezed him back.
When he set her back down, he let his fingers gently caress her cheek. “You look beautiful,” he murmured, his gaze as tender as his touch. She gave him a quiet “thank you” as he kissed her hand respectfully. “Ani, keep an eye on Alora while I get myself changed, will ya?” he asked once he was done manhandling his dear human like a little doll.
Alora rolled her eyes. “I’m not gonna touch her, I swear!”
Soldagand gave her a look that suggested he didn’t believe her. “I’ll be right back.” With that, he vanished.
“You and Solly are adorable together, by the way,” Alora soon purred teasingly.
Carly gasped. “We’re— We’re not—“
“Oh, please,” she scoffed. “That head covering bit? He’s clearly marking you as taken. I’ll bet he doesn’t want any of the men in town making a pass at you.”
“I have to agree with Alora,” Ani said with a sympathetic smile. “As lovely as your hair is, I cannot imagine that is his true intention.”
Embarrassed, she hid her face in her hands. “You don’t actually think that, do you?” she whimpered, peeking between her fingers.
Ani chuckled. “He is very fond of you, Carly!”
“Oh, darlin’,” Alora said dramatically in a mockery of Soldagand’s voice as she pretended to swoon, “you’re so beautiful!”
“Alora,” she whined, “it’s not like that!”
“Dear, I think it may be time to consider that it might be,” Ani said.
“Not you too!”
Soldagand soon reappeared, dressed in his own formal attire—a white dress shirt with a green kerchief around his neck, a green vest under a black jacket, black pants, and his best boots. Ani and Alora caught Carly blatantly gawking at Soldagand. He certainly looked handsome. The costume’s high waist made his legs look impossibly long and slimmed the bit of a beer belly that he had. Somehow, his shoulders and chest looked even broader than usual. His hair was neatly slicked back, a stray lock of hair curling handsomely at his brow.
Alora let out a wolf-whistle. “Soldagand, you handsome devil, you!”
“Impressive!” Aniketos praised him.
“You— You look incredible! I—“ Carly stuttered, finding herself at a loss for words.
“Aww, thank you, guys,” Soldagand chuckled as he adjusted the cuffs of his jacket in the full-length mirror against the wall. “Not what I’d usually go for, but I think I wear it well. As far as cultural-wear goes, it’s actually pretty flattering. C’mere, darlin’, I wanna get a good look at us.”
Carly timidly joined him at the mirror. He looked unbearably handsome like this. His typical rugged appearance was already enough to overwhelm her some days. Seeing him so polished and refined, his chest puffed out proudly, was simply too much. If she were a braver woman, she would have grabbed him by the shoulders and kissed him that very moment.
“Damn, kid! We clean up nice!” He rested his hand on her shoulder, looking them both up and down. “You and I are gonna be turnin’ some heads.”
“How sweet,” Alora cooed, resting her chin in her palm. “Did you two plan to match?”
Until then, Carly hadn’t realized that she and Soldagand were wearing the same colors. He nodded with a broad smile. “Of course! She’s my date, after all.” He wrapped a proud arm around her waist and pulled her closer.
“I— I am?” she asked, clearly caught off-guard.
Sol immediately looked concerned. “Was that not clear, sweetheart? You’re my plus-one. Is that alright?”
“Oh, yeah, that’s fine, I just— I didn’t know,” she stuttered quietly with a small smile, her face flushing.
A grin tugged on his lips. “Goodness gracious, you’re just so damn cute,” he sighed, effortlessly lifting her off the ground to sweetly kiss her cheek. She was too flustered to protest, merely squeezing her eyes shut as she received his affection.
“Control yourself, Soldagand!” Alora laughed. “Give the poor girl a break!”
He set her down with an apologetic smile. “Sorry, sorry,” he chuckled. She hugged him tightly, hiding her face in his chest. “Oh, darlin’, did I embarrass you? Aww, I’m sorry!” He wrapped his arms around her comfortingly and rubbed her back.
Once she had calmed down and he was finished doting on her, he offered her his arm, ever old-fashioned. “Ready to go?” She gently took his elbow—a picturesque sight, Ani thought to himself.
“Do not keep her out too late,” Ani warned him.
Sol shot him a wink. “No promises. You’ve come with me before, you know how these things are.”
“At least promise me you will take good care of her.”
“Don’t you worry,” Sol assured him. “I’m not lettin’ her out of my sight.“
