Screen Froze
Podcasting had become inescapable in recent years. Everyone seemed to have an opinion on...well everything. Politics, world sports, cooking, an obscure movie from 1978 only released in a now-extinct language. If it could be covered, it would be. And one could find this content anywhere across the internet. Youtube, social media, even streaming services promoted their podcasters. Everyone was watching everyone talking.
Of course, with so many different podcasters flying about, it was difficult to actually spot out talent. And from a sociologically micro perspective, it was even harder for individuals to find podcasters discussing the content they actually wanted to hear about. The more unique the niche, the less people one could happen upon to be talking about it during their recorded stream of consciousness. It was a simple formula, but it forced individuals to browse for hours or even days to find what they were searching for.
Sometimes though, people could not hold such patience. They would not wait for their new hero, a disciple preaching their values and morals to audiences around the globe. They would skip past one livestream discussing the economics of green villages in Switzerland to the next debating the potential existence between a minor character in two separate fandom universes. They could even perhaps land into a podcast like Sean’s.
“Most people just don’t understand the Soviet Union’s impact on architecture,” the measly, pale nerd innocently commented. A little shy in front of the camera, he was only able to relax a bit when discussing his favorite topics. Sean dressed in theme too, wearing a brutalist-like business casual outfit, a trait his small but dedicated fanbase adored.
“There were a lot of architects that really shaped this movement from all around the world,” Sean continued. “But today, we are just going to focus on those from the USSR.”
So what happened when one’s patience dried up? Well, everything was brought to a halt.
DragonHeart49: anyone else’s screen freeze? superduperloverboy: mine too <3bitsandmore: sean, I think ur glitching out
With the screen frozen, our impatient soul could now get to work. If one could not find the podcast they were looking for, then why not just create their own? Obviously, this did not mean constructing a podcast themselves, but rather alter the fabric of reality and completely realign another’s being to their preferred state. That was much easier.
Physical modifications were made first. A much larger body was necessary, something that demanded confidence and respect from others. Juicy pecs, rippling abs, sturdy legs. There was always something unreasonably fun in bloating the podcaster’s feet up a few sizes. An imposing frame to be craved by others, even when hidden underneath clothes, was priority. And speaking of clothes, those were quickly stripped down to less formal articles. Expensive branded tee, athletic shorts so small that boxer-briefs were visible, classic white Nike socks, all of it much more respectable than a button-up and tie.
This was not the impatient soul’s first time altering a podcaster to their liking, nor would it be their last. Physically at least, each of the end products were a little different. All alpha males, but just enough variation to not warrant any unnecessary rumors. This particular podcaster had his pre-American heritage redirected from France to India, the features in the screenshot tanning accordingly as a dark stubble acquainted itself along the sharper jawline. Of course, the bulge was accurately enlarged for geographical standards too.
Mentally however, all the podcasters could be considered copies. They each spoke of the same rhetoric, theories, and ideologies that our impatient soul wanted to hear. No matter how “backwards” or “hateful” their discussions were deemed as, nearly anything could be said by hulking bodies with undeniable charisma.
“These homos have no idea what they’re talking about!” Sanjay raged as the podcast restarted, his deep voice cocky and assertive. "Sure bro, I was just thinkin’ about a girl’s rack I saw earlier today but there's more to a girl than big tits. There's a tight pussy too!”
The chat section lit off with encouragement, their fates too having been altered.
MassiveFART69: you tell them fags bro! LOL XD crassmassschlongnator: we want to BREED THEM TOO!!!! <3TITSGALORE: JUST TALKIN ABOUT IT ALREADY GOT SANJAY GRABBIN HIMSELF AGAIN
Sanjay vacantly looked down, finding himself already subconsciously scratching at the thick bush within his shorts. He let out a hot protein fart followed by a laugh, his scratching slowly extending into groping his fat 8 inch babymaker.
“God, that was WET bros!” Sanjay applauded himself, his free massive hand swallowing the mic. “Anyway, I’ll catch you on the flip side dudes, gotta go hit the gym. Bros for life!”
There was a reason the traditional masculine movement was becoming stronger. Maybe it was because men were slowly aspiring to become the alphas’ equals, or because fags were beginning to submit to their nature. Or possibly, it could have been because each time a screen froze, reality was altered one click closer to traditional, normal masculinity.

It seems there is some confusion. I am in a doctoral program. I have taken four classes on sociology and seven on psychology. One of the courses I took was specifically on the overlap between sociology and pollution. My focus in that class was on India, which at the time was very close to overtaking China as most populous.

...As Ta-Nehisi Coates writes in Between the World and Me,
“You must always remember that the sociology, the history, the economics, the graphs, the charts, the regressions all land, with great violence, upon the body.”
...we need to understand that “Indigenous”—always capitalized—is an intrinsically political term, created in response to colonization.
In a place that has never known colonization, there’s no need for a concept like “Indigenous.” Before the Europeans came to Abya Yala, we were simply “people.”
Then the colonizers invaded, destroyed our traditional governance structures, killed our people, stole our lands. In this part of the world, they called us “Indians” to distinguish us from them, and they made laws to codify our inferiority. “Indian” became a social and legal reality.
But “Indian” was a colonial term specific to the Americas. In other places, colonizers used terms like “aboriginal” or “native,” along with a wide variety of (other) slurs.
The umbrella term “Indigenous peoples” was adopted by the nascent Indigenous peoples movement of the 1970s as an explicitly internationalist term to highlight the commonality of experience between disparate peoples around the world. It was also, in part, a radical act of self-naming meant to repudiate the othering implicit in received names like “Indian.”
That is, resistance to colonization was always part of the definition and the intent. This is part of why attempts at precise technical definitions like “the first people to live in a place” always fall short.
As Sámi scholar Troy Storfjell says,“Indigeneity is an analytic, not an identity. … Indigeneity describes a certain set of relationships to colonialism, anticolonialism, and specific lands and places.”
Put another way: the onset of colonization creates the categories of Indigenous people and colonizers (or “settlers”). The persistence of colonial structures maintains them.
That’s why it’s pretty much only fascists who say things like “Germans are the Indigenous people of Germany.” The term is nonsensical in that context, and using it that way only detracts from the intent—and therefore potency—of the word.
It’s also important to note that within Indigenous and Decolonization studies, “colonialism” refers to particular systems of domination that emerged after 1491.
... But “Indigenous” isn’t a badge you win for life; it’s a description of your relationship, as Storfjell says, “with specific lands and places.”
...What about Jews in North America? Remember, the form of colonialism still underway in North America is not primarily exploitation colonialism (like that practiced by the British in India), but settler colonialism. Under settler colonialism, foreign colonists (settlers) attempt to replace Indigenous people, taking control of the land and imposing their own cultural systems by killing, expelling, or forcibly assimilating the original inhabitants.
Under the racial apartheid laws of the antebellum US, Jews were legally defined as white and therefore allowed to own property in the form of enslaved Africans and stolen Native land (and they did both). They were settlers from the get-go.
What about those later Jewish immigrants who came to the US and Canada fleeing the pogroms of the Russian Empire? Certainly, they left Europe as refugees. But why, precisely, was this the Land of Opportunity for them? Why did their children and grandchildren largely Make It?
Because they weren’t Native or Black, of course. They were settlers. And like many generations of settlers before them, they faced persecution and marginalization … until they learned how to act like the Europeans who had arrived earlier.
None of this means that Jews don’t face antisemitism in North America, or anywhere else. What we’re talking about is a particular positionality in a colonialist system. Jews, Muslims, queer and trans people, disabled people—many, many types of people are marginalized and threatened by the oppressive power structures of colonial states. And many of those people still wield settler power, nevertheless.
...
There’s a reason that by and large, when Indigenous people look at what’s happened in Palestine since 1948, we know whose experience looks the most like ours. Hint: It’s not the Israeli Jews.
We too, have been told that our lands were empty when the settlers arrived (“A land without a people…”); subjected to forced removal; murdered by armies hand-in-hand with settler posses; slandered as uncivilized, backwards, intrinsically violent; told that the elimination of our villages, towns, and cities was an accident, regrettable, inevitable—then had them rebuilt, filled with settlers, and renamed in a foreign language. We’ve had our sacred sites destroyed; our cultures criminalized; our very existence labeled an obstacle to peace and security.
When we see an Israeli state friendly with settler colonial powers like the US, Canada, and South Africa, a state happy to massacre Indigenous Guatemalans to serve its own goals, there’s a reason we don’t feel like we’re looking at Indigenous governance.
It’s not what we created the word to mean.
...
We know whose experience looks the most like ours.
Remember what I said about how it’s the conditions of colonialism that create the categories of settler and Indigenous? Because “Indigenous” and “settler” are not identities or awards or punishments—they’re labels describing relationships within positionalities of power.

LIFE OF REVA (H.S)
chapter 2 || LIFE OF REVA MASTERLIST || main masterlist
read chapter one here.

Reva D'Souza
It was another evening and we had just finished our takeout dinner. Now, we were lounging in the living area. I was sitting near the balcony, on a barstool at the counter table. I kept the sliding door open, letting in the wind and sounds of traffic commotion. Harry was sprawled on the couch, busy on his phone, wearing his grey sweats and a black tee.
It had been a week and a half since I started staying in this flat. and I had noticed that Harry usually spent his evenings out. However, today, he decided to stay in. I usually stayed in, went for a short walk around the block or nearby streets, or talked to my family.
Our apartment was a 2 BHK on the second floor of a building that accommodated families and students. Upon entering, there was the living space. To the left of the entrance was a wall, with the kitchen on the other side seamlessly flowing into the living area. A large glass sliding door, in the front, led to the balcony, which provided the main source of natural light. Directly across from the balcony, at the end of the living area, were two rooms; Harry's on the left and mine on the right. The bathroom was located to the right of the entrance, just before my room.

I was pleased with my room; it was boxy yet not too sophisticated. There was a single bed in the corner by the door, a weary wardrobe, a study table, and a window where I had a small potted plant that I watered from time to time. I had yet to decorate my room and was searching for ideas. I brought some of my sketches to stick on the walls, but it was certain that I was not going to keep my room plain like vanilla.
The grey paint on the walls was peeling in some corners, but it was bearable. I was satisfied with the bathroom. It was big enough and had bright tiles; everything was at a strategic distance.
It wasn't congested at all, maybe because of the fewer chattels. Overall, it was worth the half rent I was paying.
We had been sitting here for 10 minutes. At first I thought about saying or asking something but my mind was blank. I kept trying to figure out what to say because the silence was starting to feel a bit awkward. However, when we both became engrossed in our screens, I didn't care.
Eventually, Harry decided to break the silence.
"So, when do your classes start?" Harry asked, looking up from his phone. His voice was soothingly deep, with a british accent.
I looked up from mine, meeting his gaze. "Next week," I cleared my throat as I had been silent for a while.
He nodded, getting busy on his phone again. I leaned forward on my chair placing my arms against the marble counter and continued scrolling on my phone.
"You nervous?"
Our eyes met again. I nodded, mentally slapping myself to use the words. "A little, it's my first time in college, so. .. "
"Understandable," He smiled sympathetically, "but don't worry, you'll be fine. I remember my first year of college was nerve-wracking too."
I gave him a small smile.
Oh god what should I say now? Should I ask him something about it? Why the hell am I like this?
"What's your major? I didn't ask you about it before."
We had already had a conversation about the university when we realized that we were both attending the same one. It was a brief exchange, neither of us asked about each other's majors or courses. We had a small introduction— the where's and the why's. I learned that Harry was from Holmes Chapel in Cheshire and had come to pursue his undergraduate studies with his friends. I shared that I was from India and that my parents, especially my father, had encouraged me to pursue higher education abroad.
"I'm doing a joint major in literature and sociology." I answered.
"Actually, I'm also doing sociology. so we have one subject in common." He said, a grin spreading across his face.
My eyebrows shot up. Oh now that's a great coincidence. He might help me with the subject.
"Oh! and what else are you taking?"
"I'm doing a triple major in psychology, sociology and music." He responded as he locked his phone and put his arms behind his head, focusing on me.
"Wow. I considered studying psychology too, but not to that level… you know, studying for the sake of grades and all the practical stuff..." I admitted, fiddling with my phone. "I just have a deep curiosity about human behaviour."
"Well, I have been interested in it for a long time, pretty intense."
"And what about music? You like to sing or–" He interrupted me before I could finish my question.
"I like singing," he nodded, a sly smile appearing on his lips.
I gave him an impressed look, curious to know more, but couldn't bring myself to ask further questions about it. Maybe it was simply a matter of mood.
"That's great! It's your final year, isn't it? What are you gonna do after that?" I found myself asking.
I have always been interested in knowing what people will be doing once they graduate and all those future plans.
"I'm not sure yet," he shifted, sitting straight. "Masters in psychology or music, maybe. Or maybe working in music therapy." He shrugged.
And I like such answers. I like when people are unsure and still figuring things out. It makes me feel relieved and reassured, less alone. It reminds me that they are humans. We are just humans ౨ৎ.
I hadn't really given much thought to my future beyond college, but whenever someone asked me I tried to appear as if I had some kind of plan.
"Literature, right? You must enjoy reading a lot, then?" He inquired, his fingers idly playing with his soft, messy curls.
Oh hell no. I mean I do read but that's not why I chose literature. To be honest, I'm not sure why I chose it. I read mostly for myself when I feel like it. I'm not the type to be engrossed in books and texts all the time. I prefer writing.
"Actually, I don't read that much." I said, pursing my lips, knowing it must be confusing to him. A lit major who doesn't read, well— that much. "I prefer writing. I either write poetry or just… whatever comes to my head."
He raised his eyebrows at my words. I had a feeling he might be judging me, but he didn't question it.
Instead, he asked, "You write?"
I gave him a simple nod of confirmation. I wanted to mention that I was currently working on a small project but I didn't want to disclose it to anyone until I was sure it was progressing.
"Could I maybe read some of your writing sometime?" He asked, almost eagerly. I blinked.
Nobody had ever asked to read something I'd written before, not even my close ones who were aware of my writing. Harry was a near-stranger, I wouldn't mind sharing it with him now that he had asked, but something held me back. I didn't want to be judged for what I wrote. People often make assumptions about our worth as writers, after reading a few pieces. They may not say it to our faces, but the facade of appreciation and praise still scars and bothers me just as much.
Oh gosh, it's always those people.
My mind was racing with a desire to scream 'YES, YES, YES', but the word 'no' was on the tip of my tongue, to keep my writing personal and hidden away.
"I'm I'm not sure," I muttered. "I'm not used to sharing my writing with anyone."
"Oh, no, I mean it's completely up to you. I was just curious." He smiled, favourably. I let out a breath.
Girl, you should apologize to him, at least, for being dismissive especially when he showed interest. He was curious and you said you're not sure? Really?
I could smell his probable disappointment, but I didn't bring myself to say anything. Instead, I felt an urge to confess my secret work in progress. Was I feeling this way because I refused to show him my work or—
"You know," he spoke, "I used to write poetry too, back in high school."
Woah!
"Really?"
"Yeah, I tried to, at least." he chuckled, looking down at himself and picking at the fabric of his t-shirt. "Nothing too great, mostly just teenage angst and emotions."
I chewed my lips, staring at his relaxed figure. I often found myself pouring my own emotions and thoughts into whatever I wrote. It was a way of expressing myself, especially because I couldn't verbalize my feelings.
"Looking back, some of my poetry was absolutely ridiculous," he admitted, slightly shaking his head.
He chuckled, gazing up at me, "I was a classic teenage drama queen."
"I know the feeling, I've written my fair share of corny stuff too." I couldn't suppress a titter as I said that. I leaned my chin on my hand.
"I think we all go through that phase, no?" The tiny smile never left his lips.
"Yeah, I suppose so." I concurred with a nod.
And the conversation died. I took another glance at him before averting my gaze down to my phone, seeing my reflection on the black screen. My hair, pulled into a ponytail, had somehow managed to look untidy and loose with strands of hair almost sticking out from the sides. I grimaced at my state. My hands quickly reached up to readjust it and make it somewhat presentable.
Great, I had been looking like this the entire time and it wasn't even a cute, loose ponytail.
A ring echoed in the silence, grabbing my attention— Harry's phone. He glanced at the caller before standing up and securing his door key in his pocket.
"I'm heading out," he informed me, walking to the door with his phone in his hand, still ringing. "I'll be back in about half an hour." He flashed me a quick smile before opening the door and stepping out.
"Aye, count to 20!" I heard him giggle into the phone as the door shut.
I exhaled a huff and pulled the elastic band off my hair, letting my mid-back length hair fall loose.
Time to oil my hair.

@morathicain @traumschwinge
Lol, there is an interesting shift when you look at old settlement structures like Çatalhöyük and the places close by (there's a reason why so many of them are in southern modern day Turkey and the Levant, but that's it's own chapter), and the places that often are named as the first cities, like Ur or Jericho (although the term "city" is a highly disputed one, especially in this context), and it includes a thing that Jericho is very famous for: the walls.
The earlier places weren't fortified, the later ones are and to cut it short: at some point people started to perfection defense systems. One of the easier ways to do that were grid systems, the Roman definitely weren't the first or the best at it, there are example for very succesful grid structures in early major settlements all over the world (see India or China), but the Romans used them for their military bases, which they spread very VERY quickly over every piece of conquered land. And even if they lost the areas again to us unwashed, smelly barbarians (not really, but you know, woot woot), the barbarians didn't erase them, but started to use them for themselves. You wouldn't believe how many modern day European cities still have a Roman fort grid system at their heart.
So these systems immensely shaped our ideas of accesibiity and efficiency, but also of course of grandeur and power (also it's own chapter, but any form of totalitarian architecture just LOOOOOVES their Imperium Romanum references!).
Friedrich Engels was one of the thinkers who tried to uproot this and he referred to a 19th century scientist, I should say "nerd" instead of scientist, because that's what he was, who proposed the "Mutterrecht" theory, aka, before we became militarised, humans were living happily and peacefully under matriarchy (this is simplified, both dudes wrote like 6000 pages on it).
They based this theory on newly found statues of fat happy ladies in Çatalhöyük f.ex. and in the 50s (40s?) some scientists picked that up and delivered the archeological artefacts to prove the theories.
The problem with that is, that those scientists were lying. They faked evidence for a good story (also its own chapter, archeological sciences are difficult and shouldn't immediately mixed up with sociology, something that's still very true today) and as much as it pains me, there never truly has been something in this world, that would count as a true matriarchy.
There were/are matrilineal societies and societies where there's some gender equality, but that's unfortunately about it. Doesn't change the fact that those findings hit BIG in the 60s (the archeologists weren't proven to be frauds until the noughties, I think) and via Engels (since men prefer to listen to men than to mean feminists) these theories reached many forward thinking young architects and planners, aka the old men in power of today.
So a lot of modern approaches, smart ones too, are based on very specific readings of ancient history. Fallible ones, but the effects are real.
I won't provide any sources since a lot of them are in German (the people digging in the… let's call them "disputed" areas, as not to call them "seriously fucked up by wars in the past decades if not centuries", are funnily enough Austrians and Brits sponored by Austrians) and you'll be able to buy the book in two years, unless my boss dies in the meantime, or he gets too consumed by the project that brings in money, or I get fired, but yeah, this has taught me once again how history is not a quaint little narrative that aligns neatly with what we wish it aligned with (aka modern ideals), but a complicated process with tons of different interpretations and hiccups.
