Study indicates lower rates of death from Alzheimer's Disease among Taxi and Ambulance Drivers
Study indicates lower rates of death from Alzheimer's Disease among Taxi and Ambulance Drivers @neosciencehub #Sciencenews #healthcare #AlzheimersDisease #neosciencehub #Dementia #featured
According to a recent study, occupations requiring a lot of spatial processing, like navigating to a hospital or figuring out a taxi route, may have a reduced death risk from Alzheimer’s disease. Mass General Brigham researchers looked into this possibility by assessing the likelihood of Alzheimer’s disease death across 443 professions using national data on the occupations of deceased…

The analysis found that although the proportion of medical students from the lowest socio-economic backgrounds had doubled since 2012, they made up only 5% of entrants in 2021.
In comparison, 75% of medical school entrants were from a higher socio-economic background. Socio-economic status was calculated by using the five-level National Statistics Socio-economic Classification (NS-SEC) groupings of parental occupation.
Applicants from independent schools across the UK were 1.5 times more likely to receive an offer from a medical school compared with students from non-selective state schools and, even after adjusting statistically for their exam grades, socio-economic status and other demographic factors, independent school applications were still more likely to receive an offer.

listen. listen. I need everyone who sees this post to know that the Swedish study that partially looked at crime rates among cis vs. trans people is being WILDLY misinterpreted and used with absolutely zero critical thinking to paint transgender woman as a violent “other.”
the study’s own author has come out and said “The individual […] who is making claims about trans criminality, specifically rape likelihood, is misrepresenting the study findings.”
having looked at both the study and the author’s comments myself, the only similarity between cis men and trans women is the conviction rate by population size, and this similarity is only seen when looking at trans women who had sex reassignment surgery before 1989, when fewer opportunities and resources were available to trans people in Sweden. The study also did not control for socio-economic status which is commonly understood as a MAJOR contributing factor in criminality.
Here’s another quote from the study’s author;
“The difference we observed between the 1989 to 2003 cohort and the control [1973 to 1988] group is that the trans cohort group accessed more mental health care, which is appropriate given the level of ongoing discrimination the group faces. What the data tells us is things are getting measurably better and the issues we found affecting the 1973 to 1988 cohort group likely reflects a time when trans health and physiological care was less effective and social stigma was far worse.”
I will not deny that trans people, both trans women and trans men, sometimes commit or are convicted of crimes. That would be unfactual of me. But I feel as though it’s basic common sense that being convicted of a crime does not automatically make someone a bad or violent or dangerous person — for example, shoplifting food that you otherwise couldn’t afford, or the case of trans woman Tara Wolf, where the judge themself admitted that Wolf was provoked but convicted her of assault anyways. It’s also worth noting that the woman who Wolf had an altercation with approached Wolf and others attempting to film them without consent and admitted to grabbing and kicking Wolf’s partner, highlighting again that there are many cases where a conviction is not a cut-and-dry good/evil situation.
If you believe that the results of this study — or that any one isolated incident — prove that trans women are inherently more violent and criminal than cis woman, I am here to tell you that is incorrect. Even if this paper that looks as though it proves this, which it does not in the eyes of its own author, that would still be insufficient evidence to draw such a broad and sweeping conclusion about an entire demographic group.
Painting any demographic as inherently dangerous and violent is an “othering” tactic that has been used against stigmatized groups and minorities (including radical feminists!) for centuries now. It is not progressive, even if you cite papers and statistics to “prove” it. If you’ve made it this far in the post maybe you should reconsider your stance on this.
Tumblr media
(obligatory inclusion: if you believe trans woman are men and trans men are women that is bioessentialist and also not progressive. just to round off the post and make sure we’re clear. limiting people’s choices and basing the way they are treated by society on a few body parts they are born with is inherently antifeminist. no I will not argue about this point.)

“What questions do you have from the readings that I can answer to help your success in this class? Working with data is new - ask about data. Working with viewable data is likely new - ask about viewable data and conclusions that can be drawn.” #writ318mu #week4 @npfannen
Reading through the notes for this week, I’ve been trying to note and organize the key characteristics to look for while gathering information on the audience. The key elements of analyzing your demographic are:
age
race
gender
socio-economic status
region/geography
After these were listed, you mentioned the point of them not always mattering. I was just wondering if there are any good ways to tell whether or not these characteristics are important in your data?
Happy Thursday!

For almost all injecting drug users (IDUs), the first site of injection is the arm. Years after injection, IDUs may shift to using other sites for intravenous (IV) access. Although injection to sites other than the arm is associated with higher risks, literature is limited regarding this behavior. We aimed to determine the prevalence and associated factors of using IV access points other than the arm among a national sample of IDUs in Iran. Data came from the National Drug Dependence Survey, 2007, which had enrolled 863 IDUs with at least one daily injection. Data on socio-demographics, pattern of drug use, and injection-related behaviors were entered into a logistic regression to determine predictors of injection to sites other than the arm. From all participants, 54.8% reported current injection sites in areas other than the arm. The other injection sites were the femoral venous sinus (17.0%), followed by the groin (14.5%) and neck (11.5%). Logistic regression revealed that living alone [odds ratio (OR) = 1.789, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.218–2.629], being Sunni (OR = 3.475, 95% CI = 1.775–6.801), having higher family income (OR = 1.002, 95% CI = 1.001–1.003), higher age at first drug use (OR = 1.039, 95% CI = 1.009–1.069), longer injection duration (OR = 1.071, 95% CI = 1.041–1.102), and more injection frequency (OR = 1.255, 95% CI = 1.072–1.471) were associated with higher likelihood of using injection sites other than the arm

Milestone Assignment 2: Methods
Analysis of Socio-Economic Indicators and Adjusted Net National Income per Capita
1. Description of the Sample
The dataset utilized in this analysis is derived from the World Bank, containing a range of socio-economic indicators for multiple countries. Initially, the dataset comprised 248 observations representing various nations. However, to ensure data quality and reliability, any observation with missing values in the selected variables was removed. Following this data-cleaning step, the final sample consisted of 153 observations.
The selection criteria focused on maintaining completeness across all chosen variables, thereby ensuring consistency in statistical analysis. The dataset primarily covers economic, social, and technological indicators, providing a holistic view of national development. While the dataset does not explicitly categorize countries by demographic features such as income groups or regions, it implicitly represents a broad spectrum of economic development levels through variables such as GDP growth, fertility rate, internet access, and foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows.
2. Description of Measures
For this study, the dependent variable is Adjusted Net National Income per Capita (Current US$) (x11_2013). This metric represents the national income adjusted for depreciation and net primary income, offering a refined measure of economic well-being.
The independent variables include a range of socio-economic indicators such as:
Economic indicators: GDP growth, GDP per capita growth, exports, imports, FDI inflows, household final consumption expenditure, private credit bureau coverage.
Demographic indicators: Fertility rate, life expectancy at birth, urban population percentage.
Health and Infrastructure indicators: Health expenditure, out-of-pocket health expenditure, improved sanitation and water facilities, mobile and broadband subscriptions.
Environmental indicators: Forest area percentage, food production index, adjusted savings from CO2 damage.
Social indicators: Proportion of women in parliament, female labor force participation.
To maintain the integrity of quantitative analysis, no variable was transformed into categorical form, nor were composite indices created. All variables remained in their original numerical scale to facilitate bivariate and regression analysis.
3. Description of Analyses
Statistical Methods & Purpose
The study employs a combination of bivariate analysis and Lasso regression:
Bivariate Analysis: This step involves examining the relationships between Adjusted Net National Income per Capita and the selected socio-economic indicators. Correlation coefficients and scatter plots are used to identify the strength and direction of relationships between variables.
Lasso Regression: Given the presence of multiple predictors, Lasso (Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator) regression is employed to handle potential multicollinearity and improve model interpretability. Lasso regression assists in feature selection by penalizing less relevant variables, leading to a more parsimonious model.
Train-Test Split
To ensure robustness in model evaluation, the dataset is split into:
Training Set (70%): Used for model training.
Test Set (30%): Used for model validation and performance evaluation.
Cross-Validation Approach
A k-fold cross-validation technique is used to fine-tune the Lasso regression model, preventing overfitting and ensuring that the model generalizes well to unseen data.
By implementing this methodological approach, the study aims to identify key socio-economic factors influencing national income levels, providing insights into the determinants of economic prosperity across countries.

I decided to work with the NESARC data. Because I’m interested to know how much wine is needed for a person to be considered as alcohol dependent.
Sure, an excess of wine consumption will promote the alcohol dependence, but how about people that leave in European countries. They drink wine almost every day and that doesn’t make them alcohol dependent. Therefore, I decided to explore the number or glasses of wine consumed, the type of wine and the familial ascendency.
Research has explored the relationship between wine consumption and alcohol dependence (AD), revealing various insights regarding consumption patterns, demographic influences, and health outcomes.
A significant study by Flensborg-Madsen et al. (2008) found that individuals who primarily consume wine have a lower risk of developing alcohol use disorders (AUD) compared to those who consume beer or distilled spirits. This study analyzed data from a diverse population and indicated that for both genders, drinking more than 35% of total alcohol intake as wine was associated with a notably reduced risk of AUD—0.8 for men and 2.0 for women—compared to higher risks associated with beer consumption [1].
Kerr et al. (2004) examined the influences of age, period, and cohort on beverage-specific alcohol consumption in the United States from 1979 to 2000. The study highlighted that increased educational attainment correlates with higher wine consumption and lower beer consumption among different cohorts. Notably, this research underscores how socio-demographic factors influence drinking behaviors, which may relate to varying risks for alcohol dependence across different age groups [2].
Rosoff et al. (2021) conducted a Mendelian randomization study involving over 780,000 participants to assess the causal effects of educational attainment on alcohol use behaviors, including AD risk. Their findings indicated that higher educational attainment was associated with increased wine consumption while reducing risky drinking behaviors like binge drinking. This suggests an indirect relationship where education may mitigate risks associated with alcohol dependence through altered consumption patterns [3].
The PURE Poland cohort study (2021) examined patterns of alcohol consumption among 2,021 adult participants from urban and rural areas in Poland. The study revealed that 54.6% of participants frequently consumed low-alcohol beverages like wine and beer, with significant differences in drinking behaviors based on gender and education level. Current drinkers showed higher odds of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases compared to abstainers, indicating potential health risks associated with alcohol consumption [4].
The reviewed literature indicates a complex relationship between wine consumption and alcohol dependence influenced by demographic factors such as age, gender, education, and beverage preference. While moderate wine consumption appears to be associated with lower risks of AUD compared to other alcoholic beverages, further research is needed to fully understand these dynamics across different populations. The findings suggest that promoting wine over other alcoholic beverages may be beneficial in reducing the incidence of alcohol-related disorders within specific demographic groups.

Diversity Drives Discovery: The Importance of Inclusion in Clinical Research
Tumblr media
In recent years, the importance of diversity and inclusion in clinical research has gained significant attention. As the medical field continues to advance, ensuring diversity in clinical trials has become critical for the discovery of more effective, equitable, and personalized healthcare solutions. Research that includes participants from various backgrounds, ethnicities, ages, genders, and health statuses leads to better understanding, broader applicability, and more accurate outcomes.
The Need for Diversity in Clinical Research
Historically, clinical trials have been dominated by a limited demographic, primarily consisting of white, middle-aged males. This lack of diversity has led to gaps in medical knowledge, especially concerning how different populations respond to treatments. For instance, certain medications may have different effects on women, the elderly, or individuals from specific racial or ethnic groups. Without a diverse representation in clinical research, these differences often go unnoticed, leading to suboptimal healthcare solutions for underrepresented populations.
The inclusion of diverse groups in clinical trials ensures that treatments are safer and more effective for everyone. By engaging a variety of participants, researchers can identify variations in how diseases manifest and how different treatments work across demographics. This improves not only the efficacy of drugs but also the safety profiles, leading to better patient outcomes.
Enhancing Clinical Trial Results
Incorporating diverse populations into clinical trials helps to produce more accurate and generalized findings. A study that only includes one specific group may not account for genetic, environmental, or socio-economic differences that affect health outcomes. For example, genetic differences among ethnic groups can influence how individuals metabolize medications, which may result in different side effects or therapeutic responses. Therefore, inclusive clinical research provides insights that are applicable to a wider range of people.
Moreover, as personalized medicine grows, it is vital to understand how treatments work across various genetic profiles. Including diverse participants ensures that discoveries made in clinical trials are not biased or limited to a particular demographic, providing a more comprehensive understanding of treatment effectiveness.
Addressing Health Disparities
Health disparities have long been a concern in global healthcare, with marginalized communities often receiving lower-quality care. By prioritizing diversity in clinical research, the healthcare industry can begin to address these disparities. Research involving diverse populations can uncover unique health risks faced by different groups and provide insights into better prevention and treatment strategies.
For example, certain racial groups may be at higher risk for specific conditions, such as diabetes or hypertension. Clinical trials that include participants from these groups can help identify better management strategies, leading to better care outcomes and a reduction in health inequities.
Building Trust in Medical Research
Another significant aspect of diversity in clinical research is building trust among underrepresented groups. Historically, certain populations have been skeptical of participating in medical research due to past unethical practices or cultural barriers. By ensuring that clinical trials are more inclusive and reflective of the general population, researchers can build trust and foster greater participation, leading to more reliable data and better overall results.
Conclusion
Inclusion in clinical research is not just a moral or ethical consideration; it is a scientific necessity. A diverse representation in clinical trials drives discovery, promotes equity, and ensures that medical advancements benefit everyone. By fostering inclusion, researchers can create a future where healthcare is personalized, effective, and accessible to all. It is time to prioritize diversity in clinical research to unlock breakthroughs that will change the future of medicine.
