For Lourdes Sanchez, dry cleaning is personal. It’s etched in her very DNA. Her grandparents ran a distinguished dry-cleaning shop in Havana — La Primera de La Vibora — founded in 1928. It’s a business her grandfather loved so much; he was heartbroken to lose it after the Cuban Revolution, and died not long after. But that wasn’t the end of the family business — far from it. Living with his young family in the freedom of early 1970s South Florida, Lourdes’ father, Justo, a Swathmore-trained electrical engineer, met Cy Mishkin. Cy was about ready to give up his dry-cleaning business — @societycleaners on Southwest Eighth Street in Coral Gables, near the stretch of “Calle Ocho” then becoming known as Little Havana. Society Cleaners had been around since 1954, before Cuban emigres began arriving en masse. The fanciful neon of its scripted signage and swanky curves of its architecture offer vivid testimony to its midcentury origins. It was here that Justo Sanchez again took up the family calling. It’s a tradition that Lourdes carries on today. For the Sanchez family, it’s about the personal touches, like the rush tailoring job the other night for a customer with a wedding looming this weekend. Or the many brides Society serves — Lourdes proudly showed off some of the gowns in the back, next to her treasured, vintage Hoffman dry-cleaning press. “I love my business,” she declared. Her parents’ importuning to give it up, just like Cy Mishkin did so many years ago, have fallen on deaf ears. Because by saying she loves her business, what’s she’s really saying is she loves her customers. It’s no surprise, then, that Society Cleaners is such a class act. #retrologist
