This one goes way back, and instead of pin up or noir, I drew inspiration from the Ziegfeld girls. The story of Leonarda Cianciulli dates back to the early 1900's, and is filled with magic and folklore, so the drama and whimsy of the Follies seemed like the perfect style to use when depicting Leonarda. And of course, the lovely Art Nouveau style of New York's Evelyn hotel served as the perfect backdrop. This is the only set we've ever shot in black & white, and I can't say we have any plans to do it again, as I'm always contemplating the significance of color choices and the emotional impact color can have on us. So I enjoy that aspect when designing my characters. Nonetheless, shades of gray just seemed to fit the tone for this series.

NOT MY MOMMA'S SOAP

WF THOUGHTS (1/12/17). Today, I unwrapped a bar of soap. I can't remember the last time that I unwrapped a bar of soap. I have people for that. When I walk into the shower, the bar of soap is right there in the soap dish. Right where it belongs. There is a downside to my system. The downside is that I don't get to select the bar of soap. I'm stuck with the selection that has been made by Mrs. Soaplady. Thus, I never know the identity of the soap that I am applying to my delicate skin. Today, we had a little problem. I started the shower, got a good steam going while I undressed, and entered. Life is good! Well, life was good for about 10 seconds. That's when I realized that the soap dish was empty. I had to exit, dripping all over the floor, and go to the bathroom cabinet to get a bar of soap. What else can go wrong this year? As I was getting goose bumps, I found a bar of Ivory Soap. The find lifted my spirits, and brought back a flood of childhood memories. When I was a kid, I was unaware of any soap other than Ivory Soap. It was the only soap we used. It was a big, white bar. It got you clean, but it was harsh. It burned your skin a little bit. Most of all, it smelled like soap. It was an industrial smell. Good 'ol Ivory didn't smell like flowers or perfume. It smelled like soap. I liked that. I grabbed the bar of Ivory, still in the wrapper, and jumped back into the steamy shower. I was going to enjoy my "Ivory Flashback," and try to forget about the failure of the regular soap system. I unwrapped the bar and threw the wrapper out of the shower. I started scrubbing. In about 10 seconds, I knew that something was wrong. Something was wrong with the bar of soap. My first reaction was that I wasn't giving the soap a fair chance. Maybe I just needed to wash away the top layer to unleash that soap smell and harsh sensation. I kept scrubbing and scrubbing. As I scrubbed, I became angrier and angrier. This wasn't the Ivory Soap of my youth. It was an imposter. Is nothing sacred? In a fury, I shut the water off and jumped out of the shower. I grabbed the soap wrapper off the floor. There were terrible words right under the big Ivory name. The words said: "Aloe Scented." Those two words ruined Ivory Soap, and ruined my morning. Why can't soap just smell like soap? Why must modern America be so complicated? I'm trying to calm myself by making a cup of Lipton tea. I haven't had tea in years, but I've always trusted Lipton. It better taste like tea. I'll let you know.
